The lower number of patient starts and rising competition has been a major worry for Gilead Sciences Inc. Most of the patients with serious Hep-C conditions have already been cured. It is estimated that more than 1 million Hep-C patients have been cured worldwide. And the entry of competitively priced drugs will further dent the growth of this segment. Gilead’s HCV drugs are facing tough competition from Merck (NYSE:MRK), AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY). For example, initially, the price difference between Merck’s treatment plan and Gilead’s plan was a whopping $40,000. The rising competition is also impacting the HCV segment’s margins.

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Watch Right Now: Skechers U.S.A., Inc.(SKX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Brian Withers] When the number one company in comfort-casual footwear,Skechers (NYSE:SKX) announced earnings last month, the headlines highlighted the first ever $1 billion quarter for the company. It seems investors weren’t impressed, though, as the stock continues to lag behind the market and has missed a nice run up over the past year.

  • [By Matt Hogan]

Skechers USA Inc (NYSE: SKX) is expected to report earnings on Thursday after the market closes. The footwear company has generally traded lower over the last eight quarters in the face of decelerating revenue growth. The stock had been gaining some momentum in the early part of the year until Susquehanna's Sam Poser downgraded the company to a negative rating on March 29th. Poser warned that domestic wholesale growth would fall short of investor expectations and the stock has since fallen 15 percent.

  • [By Timothy Green]

Shares of footwear company Skechers (NYSE:SKX) fell 18.6% in 2016, according to data provided byS&P Global Market Intelligence. A slowdown in growth and a string of mixed and negative earnings reports led investors to push down the stock.

Both the companys quarter and guidance were mixed, with higher-than-expected sales, but a downbeat bottom line. The shoe company said that it earned 4 cents a share on revenue that rose 5.8% year over year to $764.3 million. Analysts were expecting a dime per share in earnings on revenue of $726.2 million.

For the first quarter, the company said it expects to earn between 50 cents and 55 cents a share, below the 66 cents analysts were expecting. However its revenue estimate of $1.05 billion to $1.08 billion was above the $1.05 that analyst are modeling for.

Wedbushs Christopher Svezia reiterated Neutral rating and $25 price target on the stock, arguing that while hes encouraged by top-line trends, theyre coming at a cost. From his note:

Shares will likely trade higher (+9% after hours) given the improved revenue outlook and what may have been a low bar on expectations. However, sales growth is not translating into earnings and the inflection continues to move further out, increasing risk should growth not materialize. We are maintaining our NEUTRAL rating and $25 price target or 14x P/E, a 10% discount to historical averages until we see visibility toward an inflection in earnings growth.

Skechers is up 20% to $27.95 in recent afternoon trading.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now

I will get right to it. After describing the reasons behind its meteoric rise and the discussing why this name was one of my top blue chip top picks for 2017, it comes down to performance. Just this morning Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), as well as other large banks, are out with key earnings reports. This matters for the 2017 call and it matters for the share price which has skyrocketed in the last few months. It’s about the performance. Performance not just on the top and bottom lines but also in several key metrics that I follow closely for all major banks. The bank has come a long way from it facing extinction, and it took we the people to keep it alive. Today Bank of America is one of the largest banks in the United States by assets and yes, it has recovered from the Great Recession. Is it firing on all cylinders like it was pre-recession? No, unfortunately it is not, but it is getting there. Can you stick with the name? We need to examine the company’s most recent earnings and key metrics to make that determination.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now: Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.(WMT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Kumar Abhishek]

China has a growing middle class and affluent consumers who have strong aspirational demand for western luxury goods. Last year Chinese tourists spent $183 billionon shopping sprees abroad, a good deal of them for buying luxury goods. According to a report on Mintel.com, 58% of the Chinese consumers have boughtforeign goods from local online eCommerce sites. Alibaba has used this trend to build its TmallGlobal. In the just concluded Singles’ day sale, thousands of foreign brands including Walmart (NYSE:WMT) and Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) had participated. A retaliatory tax increase by China on foreign goods will impact the sale of foreign goods. The sale of foreign brands is expected to produce around $2 billion in incremental revenue by next year. A trade war between the US and China willsignificantly impact this revenue source.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now: Staples, Inc.(SPLS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Shares of Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) got a boost, shooting up 7 percent to $9.25 on chatter that the company is targeted for an acquisition. Sycamore Partners, a private equity giant, is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire the office supply retailer, Reuters reported. The deal could value Staples at more than $6 billion, a premium to Staples' valuation of $5.60 billion as of Wednesday's market close.

The company was set to merge with its last remaining rival, Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS), this year, but was denied by a federal judge on May 10 because of antitrust concerns.

Staples Inc(NASDAQ:SPLS) stock has been on a tear over the last few days amid rumors of a potential buyout.According toThe Wall Street Journal, the company is in talks with private-equity firms to sell itself after regulators blew up its planned merger withOffice Depot(NASDAQ:ODP)last year.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Staples (SPLS) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today on reports that the office-supplies retailer was considering selling itself.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Staples gained 9.8% to $9.51 today, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% to 2,360.16.

CFRA’s Efraim Levy doesn’t see a “natural buyer” for Staples but remain Buy rated anyway:

Shares are higher on an unconfirmed WSJ report that SPLS is looking at the possible sale of the company. Our fundamentally valued 12-month target of $11, applies a below historical average P/E of 12.1X our FY 18 EPS estimate, given office industry challenges. Our target has 11% upside, plus a 5.5% yield. We don’t see a natural buyer for a large physical store office supply presence, although an activist/private-equity buyer is a possibility. To make an acquisition worthwhile, a buyer would have to be more aggressive in cost cutting and use of cash flow than SPLS’s existing plan.

Staples’ market capitalization rose to $6.2 billion today from $5.7 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $459 million on sales of $18.2 billion in fiscal 2017.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now: Merck & Company, Inc.(MRK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By William Romov]

BioLine has partnerships with major pharmaceutical companies that help bring some of these drugs to launch once they gain some initial success in clinical trials. These partners include Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS) and Merck & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK).

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Merck & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK) dropped about 2.9% Monday to post a new 52-week low of $53.63 after closing at $55.02 on Friday. The 52-week high is $66.80. Volume was around 12.7 million, more than 25% above the daily average of about 10 million. The company’s chief competitor in a combo therapy for lung cancer reported a successful phase 3 trial.

  • [By The Ticker Tape]

LLY recently suffered a setback when approval for the company’s new arthritis drug, co-developed with Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ: INCY), faced delays from the FDA. LLY and INCY disagreed with the FDA’s findings in a company press release and are confident the drug will still be approved in the future. Despite the company’s confidence in the drug, LLY stock dropped about 5% in trading the day the news came out. Even with that drop, it’s still up a little over 11% on the year, outperforming the S&P 500 (SPX) and some of its pharma peers: Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MRK), Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ).

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Kudos to Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) and Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) for taking a leap forward in the war against diabetes. The two competitors-turned-partners for one joint venture recently announced the FDA and the European equivalent has accepted an application for permission to sell ertugliflozin and a couple of its derivatives. All the drugs/combos in question are part of the SGLT2 family, which essentially induce the kidneys to filter sugar out of the bloodstream for diabetics whose pancreas isn’t processing that sugar properly.

It’s an interesting approach, though not one without a potential downside. By forcing the kidneys to do something they weren’t meant to do, eventually, could pose new problems.

Cell MedX Corp (OTCMKTS:CMXC) is taking an entirely different approach to the treatment of diabetes. Rather than work around a failing pancreas as Merck and Pfizer have, Cell MedX is aiming to fix what’s broken for diabetics. That is, the company aims to restore a body’s cells that properly process sugar by turning them back “on” again using mild electrical currents.

As much as biologists and the healthcare industry know about the human body, new discoveries are being made all the time regarding our makeup. One of the more recent medical revelations was figuring out animals are not just a collection of chemicals and organic matter, but also electrical impulses. Yes, the human body creates electricity, but more than that, a body can benefit from mild electrical currents, as an electrical charge can put a damaged cell back into its natural, healthy state.

It may seem like a crazy idea at first, but know the FDA has already given the science of electromedicine the nod of approval as a treatment for chronic pain (called the Cefaly, if you’re curious), and some major companies are wading deeper into electromedicine waters.

AMD, along with other server-grade chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm (NSDQ:QCOM), Cavium (NSDQ:CAVM) and AMCC (NSDQ:AMCC), operates in the remaining minuscule 0.8% of the market. So, each of the aforementioned companies operate with a practically non-existent market share, compared to Intels shipments of course. This also means that these firms (AMD, Qualcomm etc.) have plenty of room to grow. This would be subject to good product releases of course, but at least this way, the law of large numbers isnt working against them.

In some regards, the election of Donald Trump and the looming implementation of his policies could be a bit confusing for owners of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), as well as for owners of Time Warner Inc (NYSE:TWX). But that doesn’t necessarily mean you should shy away from AT&T stock.

Why are things confusing? Two of Trump’s appointments to his transition team are both staunchly against restrictive regulations within the telecom industry, and are notably anti-net-neutrality.

recommended stocks to buy today: Medivation Inc.(MDVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Macro considerations have continued to weigh on stocks whenever they’ve shown signs of life and consensus estimates for many of the large cap companies have been declining. With the sector’s underperformance, the delta in the average PEG ratio for biotech growth companies (excluding Medivation (MDVN)) compared to non-biotech growth companies is slightly wider than it’s been for most of the year. As such, we remain constructive on the sector. That said, while valuations are attractive on a relative basis, there remains some uncertainty for the group and we would not be surprised to see the volatility continue…

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Last night, Bloomberg reported that Sanofi (SNY) had made a bid for Medivation (MDVN) but had been rebuffed, while noting that other companies–perhaps Gilead Sciences (GILD), Amgen (AMGN) or AstraZeneca (AZN)?–were also on the prowl. While December is typically a strong month for equities, most of the month’s gains have historically come prior to Christmas, while the last week of the year tends to be trendless with a slight positive bias. With just seven trading days left in the year, we wanted to highlight which stocks in the S&P 500 have historically seen the best and worst returns from the close on 12/21 through the end of December over the last ten years. The first table below lists the 14 stocks in the index that have seen a median gain of 2% or more during this period, and for each stock, we include the year where it saw its best and worst gains.

Topping the list of winning stocks to close out the year, shares of Viacom (NASDAQ:VIAB) have seen a median gain of 2.89% with positive returns 60% of the time. The stock had its best end-of-year gain in 2008 when it rallied 5.4% and its worst in 2009 when it fell 1.59%. The most notable name on the list of winners, however, is Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Over the last ten years, the stock has seen a median gain of 2.15% with positive returns 60% of the time. AAPL’s best end to a year was in 2009 (6.31%), while its worst was 2008 (-5.17%). In terms of sector representation, both the Consumer Discretionary and Materials sectors account for four of the fourteen stocks listed.

Chipotle Mexican Grill(NYSE:CMG) looks to be in recovery mode after a very rough year and a half. Things seem to be turning around, with traffic and sales picking back up as Chipotle continues to drive the message that its food is “as real as it gets.” One area that could help to amplify its growth is if Chipotle’s new digital strategy really starts to take off this year.

  • [By Asit Sharma]

The great southern writer Flannery O’Connor titled her final short story collectionEverything That Rises Must Converge. But the stock market teaches us that a related, opposing corollary is also often true: Every great stock that falls must converge — with the valuation of its peers, that is.

Take Chipotle Mexican Grill(CMG), which has witnessed its forward one-year price-to-earnings (PE) ratio shrink 35% from nearly 37 to 24 in the span of just 12 weeks, due to its much publicized E. coli and norovirus food contamination crises.

Chipotle’s valuation has converged with former parent McDonald’s Corporation’s forward P/E ratio of 23. It’s also converging with the average for the sleepy, large-cap, consumer-oriented stocks in the S&P 500 Consumer Staples sector, which collectively hold a one-year forward P/E of 20.

This valuation range is compelling because it reflects the market’s assumption that Chipotle will experience a dramatic curbing of growth next year. And from everything we know today, that certainly appears to be the case.

But this temporary convergence is the long-term investor’s opportunity. At the moment, there is no single competitor with Chipotle’s scale and product quality which can quickly step in and supplant the company from the niche it has dominated for several years. If Chipotle can fix its food supply issues, any lost market share is its own to regain.

And the Mexican-themed chain has already proven that it can expand aggressively. The 2016 store opening schedule (still unrevised, although I believe it will be dialed back slightly early this year) calls for an 11.5% expansion of Chipotle’s locations in a single year.

So if Chipotle regains consumer trust — and I believe this very capable management team will succeed in doing so — its stock has the significant possibility to rebound to a much higher multiple, in line with the company’s historic growth potential. This resurgence might not occur in 2016. But Foolish investors know that the best investments take time.

jim cramer stock picks: Paragon Offshore plc (PGNPQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Paragon Offshore’s (OTCPK:PGNPQ) former management’s audacious efforts to omit parts of the senior secured lenders by deeming them unimpaired and instead pay out the majority of the company’s cash to junior unsecured bondholders by presenting a set of entirely unrealistic business forecasts to the court. Fortunately, in case of Paragon Offshore, the bankruptcy judge recognized the framing and accordingly denied confirmation of the company’s plan of reorganization, effectively sending Paragon Offshore back to the drawing board. Consequently, management was ousted after the failure. I have covered the Paragon Offshore saga in a series of articles over the past few quarters, so interested investors might want to take a look at this highly fascinating and still evolving case study.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

With even brand new rigs struggling to find work, the jig was soon up for owners of old equipment, like Paragon Offshore (OTCPK:PGNPQ), which is currently undergoing its second debt restructuring in less than three years of independent existence. Likewise, drillers with a fondness for aggressive use of debt were soon in trouble, most notably, former high-flier Seadrill (SDRL) and its little brother North Atlantic Drilling (NADL), which will no doubt file for restructuring within months. As a consequence of the crisis, the OSD industry now has a number of participants without a large debt burden, either new entrants like Borr Drilling, or established competitors that have had debt reduced in a restructuring, such as Ocean Rig (ORIG), to be followed within this year by others, almost certainly including each of SDRL, NADL, and Pacific Drilling (PACD).

Look at Starbucks (SBUX). The pre-eminent purveyor of overprice coffee’s stock is soaring today…and I have don’t have much of an idea why.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

It’s not that Starbucks has actually been performing well this year. Before today, its stock had dropped 0.9% in 2017, well below the 6.9% total return in the S&P 500.

But flying it is, and along with Darden Restaurants (DRI) and McDonald’s (MCD), Starbucks find itself among the top 25 performers in the S&P 500 today. So let’s acknowledge industry strength today, because that appears to be a big part of what’s happening here. In fact, Canaccord Genuity’s Lynne Collier and Philip May, in a casual dining update, argued that trends across the industry are getting better:

Our restaurant checks for the first week of March suggest a second consecutive week of positive comps (LSD) for the casual diners. Once again, we believe the shift in the tax refund schedule is positively skewing results. While we project that the first week of the month was in positive territory, we are maintaining our March SSS estimate of -2.0% to 0.0% given inclement weather mid-month and an unfavorable Easter shift. While comps remain volatile m/m and it is difficult to discern underlying trends, we note that our March industry SSS estimate would represent an improvement vs. February, which was -3.4% according to Knapp Track.

And while Starbucks didn’t release any data, or get upgraded by an analyst, it was on the receiving end of a positive comment from Wells Fargo’s Bonnie Herzog:

We hosted an investor meeting atStarbucks’ HQ yesterday (3/16) with CFO Scott Maw and SVP-Store Development Andy Adams. Overall, we came away with greater conviction recent challenges are being appropriately addressed, and comps will reaccelerate in the back half of the year through higher ticket (premiumization and increased attach

It is rare to find an investment that is both relatively safe and offers tremendous upside potential.

What if I told you that there was a smaller Canadian version of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.B) that has both of these characteristics?

The company I’m talking about is Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. (OTCPK:FRFHF) It is a diversified insurance provider with a significant portfolio of common stock investments.

This post will examine the investment prospects of Fairfax in detail.

FFH – Business Overview

Fairfax (TSE:FFH) is a diversified insurance company with headquarters in Toronto, Canada. The present management has been in control of Fairfax since September of 1985.

Fairfax’s operations are divided into two segments: insurance and investment management.

Many of these wholly-owned subsidiaries are large in their own right, including Northbridge, Odyssey Re, Crum & Forster, Zenith National, and Brit Insurance (the newest addition to the Fairfax family).

The stock market finished in the red Wednesday, with very modest losses in most major benchmarks. Even the release of a broad outline of the Trump administration’s tax reform plan wasn’t enough to spur too much excitement among investors, as some worry that the plan’s focus on corporate taxes and balanced approach toward individual income tax reform might not resonate with the bulk of the American public. Moreover, bad news from some sectors of the market helped to dampen excitement from earlier in the week, and U.S. Steel (NYSE:X), Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX), and Dr Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE:DPS) were among the worst performers on the day. Hot Gold Stocks To Watch Right Now

General Motors has announced that it plans to stop selling Chevrolet brand cars in India at the end of 2017. The company currently runs two production facilities in the country. It will keep the Talegaon facility operational and use it to export vehicles to Mexico and South America, while selling the Halol facility to Chinese joint venture partner SAIC group. The move comes after GM’s efforts at expanding its market share in the country failed to make much traction.

India is expected to surpass Japan as the third biggest auto market in the next decade. India has an extremely low vehicle penetration rate, with only 32 vehicles per 1,000 people as of 2015. This means that there is considerable room for the auto market to grow and, according to Goldman Sachs, vehicle sales could double from 3 million last year by 2025. However, there are costs to capturing this growth that General Motors isn’t willing to take on.

The auto maker developed a $5 billion investment plan along with SAIC Motor. Under this plan, the company planned to manufacture around 2 million vehicles a year and sell them in Mexico, South America, China, and India. Top 10 Stocks To Own For 2018

Photographer: Scott Eells/Bloomberg

Netflix’s stock has performed well in the markets in recent months, particularly following its earnings announcement in January. One of the primary reasons for this was growth in international markets – as the company saw over 47% growth in international streaming revenues in 2016 – while the domestic business for the company has largely stabilized. Furthermore, the international business’ margins are improving, which should help boost the company’s overall profitability in 2017. As a result of these developments, as well as other factors, we have revised our price estimate for Netflix upwards to to $137. Below we explain the changes that we have made to our forecast model for the company.

Top 10 Stocks To Own For 2018: Charter Communications, Inc.(CHTR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Andrew Tonner]

As one of the group of companies associated with telecom magnate John Malone — who regularly uses complex, tax-efficient corporate transactions to unlock value for shareholders — Liberty Broadband serves as a holding company that controls a diverse set of media assets. The most important of these is Liberty Broadband’s ownership of 25% of Charter Communications’ (NASDAQ:CHTR) total voting power, which effectively makes Liberty Broadband a tracking stock for Charter Communications shares. As such, Liberty Broadband shares have largely mirrored the impressive rally in Charter Communications stock over the past year. Particularly given Charter’s upcoming launch of its own wireless service network, Soros’ investment in Liberty Broadband remains an interesting option as the cable and telecom industries continue to evolve.

  • [By Matt Hogan]

It has been widely reported that T-Mobile US Inc. (NASDAQ: TMUS) had been in merger talks with Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S), a competitor that is majority owned by Softbank. However, these talks are now on hold as Sprint is negotiating potential deals with two of the largest cable companies in the United States; Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) and Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR). These cable companies are under pressure having lost subscribers due to services like Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), which recently blew away its second quarter growth estimates.

  • [By Adam Levy]

It was just a little more than a year ago when Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) was the largest U.S. pay-TV provider. And it wasn’t even close. But after AT&T (NYSE:T) merged with DirecTV, it took over the top spot. Now, AT&T’s rival telecom company, Verizon (NYSE:VZ), is reportedly considering a megamerger of its own with Charter Communications (NASDAQ:CHTR). The move would put the combined company’s total video subscriber count very close to Comcast’s.

The potential merger points to a big hole in Comcast’s service offerings — its lack of wireless service. If customers can save money by bundling their TV, internet, and wireless bills together with its competitors, Comcast stands to lose customers. But Comcast’s management and investors shouldn’t lose sleep over the possibility that its two biggest competitors offer wireless service.
