Top Energy Stocks For 2018

Energy Recovery (ERII) has a lot of recovering stockholders getting over their past disappointments with missed deadlines. Well, here we go again:

Currently, all aspects of the second generation system are in manufacturing and we expect to take receipt of the final system in early September. We will spend the entirety of that month commissioning the unit and therefore expect to initiate full-scale, private testing in October, where we endeavor to execute a test in which we achieve the key performance indicators required under milestone one of the VorTeq licensing agreement. Assuming we are successful here, we would then proceed immediately into the milestone testing process. Our best estimate therefore is to achieve milestone one in the fourth quarter.

Of course, we have been here before. What makes this time better than any other is anyone’s guess. Plus finishing the design process of two products at the same time could really strain management resources. Still, there is now an approximate deadline to know the success or failure of the latest version of Vorteq. MTeq is in a similar situation. Management must have learned something from the past attempts as the language above is a little more careful.

Top 5 Energy Stocks For 2018

Last Friday, ourSmall Cap Network newsletter had this tosay about our featured stock Cenovus Energy (NYSE: CVE):

What’s interesting about what I’m seeing with CVE here is although the entire oil sector continues to drag on both the DOW and the S&P 500, shares of CVE have quietly been moving higher in recent days, and more importantly appear to be in the process of building a base

There’s definitely value in spotting stocks that are trading well within a sector that has not been trading well, because when an idea like that starts to take hold, and then the sector it’s in also starts to behave better, it’s usually a pretty lethal combination for that stock.

The volume in CVE has been increasing of late too, and again it’s coming at a time when nobody really cares all that much about energy stocks. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that every single sector out there is going to have its day in the sun at some point in the future.

Top 5 Energy Stocks For 2018: Foresight Energy LP(FELP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

FORESIGHT ENERGY LP has experienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. We feel it is likely to report a decline in earnings in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, FORESIGHT ENERGY LP increased its bottom line by earning $0.78 versus $0.08 in the prior year. For the next year, the market is expecting a contraction of 67.9% in earnings ($0.25 versus $0.78).

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The debt-to-equity ratio is very high at 18.59 and currently higher than the industry average, implying increased risk associated with the management of debt levels within the company. To add to this, FELP has a quick ratio of 0.56, this demonstrates the lack of ability of the company to cover short-term liquidity needs.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

After the recent distribution cut, Foresight’s distribution coverage is over 6.0x with much of the future cash flow dedicated to reducing leverage. It has over 80% of its coal sales priced for next year and its costs should improve as the low cost Hillsboro mine comes back into production early next year. It is also benefitting from cost synergies with the Murray operations. We believe Foresight’s new distribution level is sustainable. With its 15.5% yield, we feel FELP could be attractive to income seeking investors.

Rex Wayne Tillerson’s Public Financial Disclosure Report makes interesting reading. Filed on 31st December last year he will have to liquidate much of this portfolio if he is to take up his government role. Although the portfolio does not give exact size of holdings, its value is estimated to be worth maybe $400 million according to press reports. Most of that is related to his ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) holdings and pension.

It’s important to say from the very beginning that what I’m about to write are just highlights from the Global Investor’s peering through the document. I can’t be sure if Tillerson has managed this portfolio actively or not and I am speculating with some thoughts below, and be aware the list is not exhaustive, as there are many holdings of different sizes including many ADRs from foreign companies. The filing can be found here.

Apart from the ExxonMobil holdings, he has large investments in real estate, single equities, equity ETFs, equity mutual funds, bonds, government bond and money market funds. I’m going to talk about some of the more interesting equity positions, as I think they might provide some insight, from a very smart man who has been at the center of global energy for the last 25 years.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Halliburton Company(HAL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

Among the year-end numbers, there isn’t that much that pops out as extraordinary. Halliburton ended 2016 with a $6.69 per-share loss. Much of that loss, though, was the $7.4 billion in charges related to asset impairments, goodwill writedowns, and the $4.06 billion it had to charge for the termination of the merger with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI). So when looking at the company’s year-end results, do keep in mind that those are heavily skewed by one-time items that probably won’t have much of a material impact on the business in the coming year. Looking at operational income, we see that international markets held up rather well throughout the year, while the North American market suffered.

The Oil and gas business represents a significant part of GE’s operations. Oil and gas segment revenues of $9.5 billion accounted for 10.5% of the company’s total revenues in the first nine months of 2016. In the same period in 2015, the segment’s revenues were much higher at $12.1 billion, 14.5% of GE’s total revenues for that period. In one of my previous articles about GE, I suggested that GE’s decision to combine its oil and gas business with one of the world’s leading oilfield services companies Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI)is a smart move. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil price has climbed 20% from the beginning of 2016 to $55.45 per barrel, and WTI crude oil price has increased 17.5% to $52.37 per barrel in the same period. As such, the U.S. rig count has started to recover, and oil and gas producers have begun to increase their capital spending. According to Baker Hughes, the average U.S. rig count for December 2016 increased by 54 from the prior month to 634 rigs. This development will benefit GE in the current quarter and much more after the merger with Baker Hughes.

  • [By Brian Wu]

GE recently doubled down on its oil and gas business after merging it with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI) and took a majority 62.5% stake in the merged entity. The merged entity is now the second-largest oil services business and will help GE take full advantage of increased oil and gas production under the new administration.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: CGG(CGG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

First up is French oil service firm CGG Veritas (CGG)
. The Eurozone-based energy stock hasn’t exactly posted blockbuster performance in 2013, but investors who ignore CGG for the final stretch of the year could be making a big mistake. That’s because of a bullish technical pattern that’s emerging in shares right now.

CGG spent most of the last eight months looking anything but bullish. But an ascending triangle pattern is changing that. The pattern is formed by horizontal resistance to the upside at $26, and uptrending support to the below shares. Basically, as CGG bounces in between those two technical levels, it’s getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above $26. When that happens, traders have a buy signal.

The ascending triangle pattern in CGG Veritas isn’t exactly textbook. That’s because the setup is forming at the bottom of a downtrend, rather than in the middle of an uptrend – but it’s a mistake to get caught up on the textbook pictures of what trading patterns are supposed to look like. On a move through $26, the trading implications are just as actionable.

Matador has grown its reserves throughout the commodity cycle, as well as its production and cash flow. Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

Of course, Peabody Energy was fast approaching bankruptcy then, so missed out on that amazing run.

stock data

The word “growth” is the central word in the phrase Dividend Growth Investing, yet DGI often gets a bad rap as a stodgy method of saving for retirement. I think this misperception arises from the fact that some proponents of the strategy (who may be more focused on income than returns) require a certain minimum yield threshold for their investments. This, in turn, screens many of the higher growth companies from their radar, as higher growth companies generally have lower payout ratios than their slower growth counterparts.

As a result, many of the same old slow-growing blue chips like Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), Proctor & Gamble (NYSE:PG), and General Mills (NYSE:GIS) are widely held and discussed in the “Dividends” section of Seeking Alpha, while other higher growth opportunities are passed over. This is unfortunate, because there are several very high quality companies that are being disqualified simply because of a lower yield.

These lower yield, higher growth companies can be excellent investments for those with an extended time horizon, and even for retirees they can be a nice boost for a portfolio. For all the angst of wanting enough immediate income, a freshly minted retiree should realize that they are also likely looking at a 20 year time frame for their investments. As the ssa.gov life expectancy calculator shows, a male turning 62 years old in 2016 can expect to live an additional 21.6 years.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Income investors appreciate stocks that pay lucrative dividends, and recently, many companies have seen the value in treating shareholders well by boosting their regular payouts. Yet a few holdouts simply don’t show their appreciation for their investors through dividends. For whatever reason, rather than having no dividend at all, Joy Global (NYSE:JOY), Textron (NYSE:TXT), and Global Payments (NYSE:GPN) maintain the tiniest of quarterly payments. Let’s look more closely at these stocks to see why they do what they do with their dividends.

Best Performing Stocks To Watch Right Now: Occidental Petroleum Corporation(OXY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Occidental Petroleum Corp.s (NYSE: OXY) short interest increased to 17.60 million shares from the previous reading of 15.53 million. Shares closed most recently at $66.90, in a 52-week range of $58.24 to $78.48.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Early on Monday, analysts at Deutsche Bank lowered their price target on Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) to reflect a lower-than-expected valuation of an asset that the oil and gas exploration company is trying to sell.

Though the analysts lowered OXY’s price target from $114 to $109, they still maintain a “Buy” rating on the stock. The new price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $89.49.

Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Sankey said, “Bloomberg Finance LP reports that Oxy is seeking sale of 40% of Mideast operations for around $8bn, which would imply $20bn total value for the unit. However reportedly some suitors are valuing the asset at around $15bn. This is a relatively negative valuation against our previous view that Oxy would be seeking $25+bn for its MENA business. We are cutting our price target to $109/share to reflect this lower implied valuation.”

Occidental Petroleum shares were up 96 cents, or 1.07%, during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 16.81% year-to-date.

We have seen several dividend cuts in the recent past, including Anadarko Petroleum cutting its dividend by 81%…and we expect more companies to follow suit. Chesapeake Energy (CHK), ConocoPhillips (COP), Encana,Marathon Oil and Noble Energy (NBL) are among energy companies that have also cut dividends in the past 12 months, but dividend requirements even after several cuts will consume ~26% of 2016 estimated cash flow at current dividend rates (15% excluding Occidental Petroleum (OXY)) for the large cap E&Ps we cover. We believe most of the companies with a dividend yield of more than 1.5% should consider cutting the dividend and find the following companies more likely than not to reduce dividends:Apache (2.5% yield),Devon Energy (4%),Encana (1.5%) andMarathon Oil (2.5%). We believe Canadian Natural Resource (CNQ) (3.0%) is likely to maintain its dividend while Occidental (4.5%) has the financial strength to maintain or even increase the dividend…

Why oil’s plunge is freaking out the stock market The latest plunge in oil prices is putting a smile on the faces of millions of Americans. But should it?

Sure, the stunning crash in oil prices below $27 a barrel seems great for consumers because it’s driven gas at the pump to nearly $1 a gallon in some places. And the thinking is that it should help boost the U.S. economy, with people spending their gas savings.

But cheap oil is also causing mayhem in global stock markets. The financial headlines at the start of 2016 are downright scary. With that backdrop, any euphoria over low oil prices is questionable. Here’s why:

It’s rocking your retirement account: The Dow has plummeted 1,800 points so far this year and CNNMoney’s Fear & Greed Index is flashing “extreme fear.” You’re not going to be happy when you open your 401(k) statement. The freakout on Wall Street has been largely driven by the crash in oil. It’s caused energy profits to plunge and slammed stocks like Chevron (CVX) and ConocoPhillips (COP).
