Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Own For 2018

During these busy times, it pays to stay on top of the latest profit opportunities, and today’s blog post is a great place to start.

After taking a close look at the latest data on institutional buying pressure and each company’s fundamental health, I decided to revise my Portfolio Grader recommendations for 113 big blue chips.

Chances are that you have at least one of these stocks in your portfolio, so you may want to give this list a skim and act accordingly.

This Week’s Ratings Changes:

A long term performance chart shows small caps Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation andLayne Christensen Company (NASDAQ: LAYN) underperforming, but possibly recovering while Orion Group Holdings (NYSE: ORN) had a clear reversal early last year:

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Own For 2018: Allstate Corporation (The)(ALL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Wells Fargo analysts see a number of upside catalysts for The Allstate Corporation (ALL), plus a positive trend for automobile insurers as a whole. As such, the analysts upgraded the insurance provider on Thursday.

The analysts upgraded ALL from “Market Perform” to “Outperform” and boosted its valuation range from $48-$52 to $58-$62. This new valuation range suggests a 16% to 24% upside to the stock’s Wednesday closing price of $50.11.

“We are upgrading the shares of Allstate to Outperform from Market Perform on the basis of several fundamental reasons unique to the company as well as several positive, emerging structural trends for auto insurers in general,” Wells Fargo analyst John Hall stated. “We do not believe that the market has yet paid for potential unit growth within Allstate’s branded standard book of auto insurance, something we envision occurring over the next 6-12 months.”

As for some of the positive personal auto insurance sector trends, Hall noted, “These would include shifting demographics toward a safer driving population mix (more old drivers and fewer young drivers), changing driving habits particularly among millennials, a safer U.S. personal auto fleet, rising car sales pointing to positive symbol shift as well as industry conditions encouraging market share consolidation.”

Wells Fargo boosted Allstate’s 2013 EPS estimates from $4.62 to $4.85 and 2014 EPS estimates from $4.85 to $5.20.

Allstate shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading on Thursday. The stock is up 24.74% year-to-date.

Credit Suisse reported on Thursday that it has raised its estimates on insurance company The Allstate Corporation (ALL).

The firm has raised its price target on ALL to $62. This price target suggests a 16% upside from the stock’s current price of $52.23. Analysts currently have an “Outperform” rating on ALL.

Credit Suisse has also boosted estimates on ALL as its management is increasing returns.

Allstate shares were up 32 cents, or 0.62%, during Thursday morning trading. The stock is up 30% YTD.

It is not often that a secondary stock offering sends a companys shares higher, but we are seeing that very phenomenon Friday morning. Chinese solar PV maker JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS) and stock image company Shutterstock Inc. (NASDAQ: SSTK) both priced secondary offerings this morning and shares in both companies have risen sharply.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

But the real news is the near vertical trajectory in share prices for the two stocks. This could be another manifestation of the markets hunger for some momentum plays, as we noted earlier this morning the bump to share prices for both JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS) and Shutterstock Inc. (NASDAQ: SSTK), both of which held secondary share sales this morning.

Some already had their autonomous car bets made with positions in both Tesla and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) surmising those will be the big winners. They have good company. Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research summed up his thesis for autonomous transportation and transportation in general going forward as Winners: Tesla, Nvidia; and Losers: Mobileye (NYSE:MBLY) and all traditional automakers. All traditional automakers? That’s basically every automaker on the planet besides Tesla and maybe Fisker and BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY), that’s a lot of losers. Trip is a talented analyst. I’ve followed him for many years (see his ranking on TipRanks here). Even for him, that’s a pretty bold statement. It got me thinking, is Tesla’s lead in the race for autonomous cars so great that the race is effectively over? I wanted to find out if I was using traditional methodologies too much, overthinking my picks and missing out on the bigger winner, Tesla.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Own For 2018: Weatherford International plc(WFT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Swanson]

Weatherford International Plc (NYSE: WFT) is forming the OneStim joint venture with Schlumberger Limited. (NYSE: SLB), which would focus on the unconventional completions market in North America. “We view the transaction as a rare win-win situation,” Deutsche Bank’s Mike Urban said in a report.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Weatherford International plc (NYSE: WFT) saw a share 18.9% gain to $5.14 on Wednesday, and the 55.9 million shares was right at 2 times normal trading volume. Weatherford has a consensus analyst price target of $7.43 and a 52-week trading range of $3.73 to $11.14. The company has a total market cap of $5 billion.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

When Weatherford International (WFT) announced that it had named Halliburton (HAL) CFO Mark McCollumits new CEO, its shares jumped as some observers contended itincreased the odds of an acquisition by the oil-services giant. It looks like they picked the wrong oil-services giant, however, as Weatherford and Schlumberger (SLB) announced a joint venture late Friday, one that has sent Weatherford’s shares soaring and earned it an upgrade from Wells Fargo analystsJudson Bailey andColeman Sullivan. They explain why:

    AP

We are upgrading WFT to Outperform from Market Perform as we like the hire of Mark McCollum as CEO and now the formation of the OneStim JV, which gives us greater confidence in improving operations and the de-levering of the balance sheet long-term. We view the JV announcement between WFT and SLB late Friday as a positive outcome for WFT as it provides an immediate cash infusion of $535 MM and a 30% stake in what will likely be a stronger #2 competitor to HAL in NAM pressure pumping/completion services. We value the OneStim JV today at approximately $4 Bn ($1.2 Bn to WFT) with the potential for value uplift to $6-7 Bn assuming SLB improves utilization for WFTs pressure pumping assets.

Shares of Weatherford International have risen 9% to $5.89, while Schlumberger has fallen more than 1% to $77 and Halliburton has fallen 1.3% to $49. TheVanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH) has declined 0.64%.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2018: Baker Hughes Incorporated(BHI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Brian Wu]

GE recently doubled down on its oil and gas business after merging it with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI) and took a majority 62.5% stake in the merged entity. The merged entity is now the second-largest oil services business and will help GE take full advantage of increased oil and gas production under the new administration.

  • [By Arie Goren]

The Oil and gas business represents a significant part of GE’s operations. Oil and gas segment revenues of $9.5 billion accounted for 10.5% of the company’s total revenues in the first nine months of 2016. In the same period in 2015, the segment’s revenues were much higher at $12.1 billion, 14.5% of GE’s total revenues for that period. In one of my previous articles about GE, I suggested that GE’s decision to combine its oil and gas business with one of the world’s leading oilfield services companies Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI)is a smart move. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil price has climbed 20% from the beginning of 2016 to $55.45 per barrel, and WTI crude oil price has increased 17.5% to $52.37 per barrel in the same period. As such, the U.S. rig count has started to recover, and oil and gas producers have begun to increase their capital spending. According to Baker Hughes, the average U.S. rig count for December 2016 increased by 54 from the prior month to 634 rigs. This development will benefit GE in the current quarter and much more after the merger with Baker Hughes.

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers visits FOX Business Network at FOX Studios on January 30, 2015 in New York City. (Photo by Rob Kim/Getty Images)

Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers wrote an op ed for the Washington Post on October 8 calling the Trump Administration’s tax plan "an atrocity." He also called Kevin Hassett, who is a highly distinguished economist and chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, some combination of "ignorant, disingenuous, dishonest." Several sentences later, Summers indirectly, but obviously called Hassett "absurd and dishonest."

On October 22, Summers wrote another article in the Washington Post giving Hassett "failing grades" and accusing Hassett, in his recent address to the Tax Policy Center and Tax Foundation, of impugning the integrity of two top economists, Len Burman and Gene Steuerle, who work at the Tax Policy Center. In his more recent column, Summers dismisses my own co-authored work on the potential impact of the Republican tax plan (discussed in a recent Wall Street Journal op ed with University of Calgary economist, Jack Mintz) on three grounds. Only one of these concerns is valid and even that is of dubious import.

Top 5 Energy Stocks To Own Right Now

Overview:

Chesapeake Energy is perhaps the greatest turn around story in the E&P sector in 2016. The company suffered tremendously during the first half of the year due to its massive debt load that was exacerbated by the fall in commodity prices early this year. Investors became concerned with Chesapeake’s prospects going forward and many were suspecting that the company was headed for bankruptcy. The shares tumbled to nearly $1/ share at the height of the crisis. Despite such concerns, Doug Lawler and his team were able to turn the ship around and recreate Chesapeake and the result: a run from nearly $1/ share to almost $9/ share. Much of the rise is due to higher commodity prices; however, there has been a great deal of internal value creation that shouldn’t go unnoticed. My team and I at BlackVault were watching CHK throughout the turnaround and decided to add to the shares with an average price of $4.45 and remain long for the longer term.

Never one to choose a straightforward company, Charles went withEnergy Transfer Equity (ETE) for the Best Stocks for 2016 contest. ETE is a complicated beast, a master limited partnership that’s made up of six other energy companies.

Perhaps the simplest way to think of ETE is as a company with diversified exposure to energy pipelines, which essentially collect tolls as their corporate users send oil and natural gas all across the country.

Energy Transfer is thick on the income front, with a dividend yield sitting at 8.7% currently.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Natural Gas(NG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By William Romov]

Over the last year, the number of short positions on gold stocks has fallen. One of these stocks is a Canadian gold mining company called NovaGold Resources Inc. (NYSE: NG). In the last 12 months, the volume of short bets on the stock declined 79%, to 522,400. This shows a shift in sentiment from bearish to bullish for gold.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of Canadian gold mining stocks, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) (NYSEMKT:NG) and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) are often the first names to come to mind. And well they should. Yamana Gold is a $2.5 billion giant, and NovaGold Resources seems to have been around forever.

Those two icons aren’t the only way to tap into Canada’s sizeable gold mining industry though. There’s a small, up-and-coming player called Taranis Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNREF, TSX:TRO) that could end up becoming another key fixture of the country’s mining landscape.

Taranis develops mineral deposits into mine-ready projects. Its primary project right now — and it’s enough to keep the company plenty busy for the next several years — is the Thor property located near Trout Lake, British Columbia. NI 43-101 resource reports (indicated and inferred)suggest Thor contains 6.9 million ounces of silver, 35,000 ounces gold, 57 million pounds of lead, 79.4 million pounds of zinc and 3.3 Million pounds of copper (roughly a 14 million ounce silver equivalent (“AgEq”) deposit*) laying in wait in a way that lends itself to the establishment of a low-cost, open pit mining operation. That’s roughly $300 million worth of marketable metals, and the estimates have been steadily getting bigger as Tanaris does more survey work.

And 2017 could be a real breakout year for Taranis, as a lot of the work that’s been done to date starts to mean something. It’s got big exploration plans for this year… this spring/summer to be exact.

The Phase 1 program was completed in September of last year, setting the stage for a more defined and much bigger Phase 2 definition-drilling within the next several weeks. This Phase 2 definition drilling slated for the middle of this year will drill down to between 6000 m and 10,000 m.

These so-called first generation target areas are generally well understood areas based on sound geological information includ

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: FMC Technologies, Inc.(FTI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

President-elect Donald Trump will try to implement his campaign promises of pro-growth policies, infrastructure spending and tax cuts, asserts Marvin Appel, technical expert and editor of Systems and Forecasts.

As good as this fiscal stimulus sounds on the surface, Trump may have difficulties implementing them. Even the always bullish Wall Street strategists don’t believe Trump will be able to spur much economic growth in 2017 as they are forecasting just a 4.3% rise in the S&P 500 Index.

This happens to be the lowest number since 2005. My expectation is similar to the consensus; a low single digit advance this year. As such, I believe a long-term covered call position, in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) — with a 7.8% profit potential — may be an appropriate strategy this year.

I believe a sound strategy would be to sell the January 2018 SPY calls with a $227 strike price and buy SPY. Assuming that you buy the SPY at $226.53 and collect $12.63 on the option, the premium will translate to 5.6%.

stock analysis software: Weatherford International plc(WFT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Last night, Weatherford International (WFT) reported a smaller than expected loss and announcing an alliance with Nabors Industries (NBR)–and the news was celebrated by the market.

    Getty Images

No wonder: Weatherford reported a loss of 32 cents a share, less than the 34 cent loss analysts had predicted, on sales of $1.41 billion. Weatherford also said that it would team up with Nabors Industries to offer “integrated drilling solutions,” something we can only imagine is a response to consolidation in the oil-services space.

Still, not everyone is thrilled with Weatherford’s numbers. Stephens analyst Matthew Marietta, for instance, claims that his “Underweight thesis [is] intact” despite teh better than expected earnings:

Weatherfordreported $1.41 bil. of 4Q revenue, in line with cons./us. However EBITDA/margin of $67 mil./4.8% were below cons. at $88 mil./6.2% and our $105 mil./7.4% estimates. Despite shutting down its less profitable pressure pumping business for ~1/2 of 4Q, EBITDA/margin underperformance was due to weaker than expected revs/margins in Int’l (excl. MENA/Asia) and Land Drilling, and 8% q/q NAM growth (large cap peers up 9%-15%). Op. EPS was slightly ahead of cons., but benefited from a $27 mil./11% q/q reduction inDepreciation & Amortization and adjustments for $245 mil. (or ~$0.27/sh) of net non-recurring items (>$1.6 bil. total in 2016). Though net debt improved ~$500 mil. q/q, it was largely achieved by diluting shareholders ~9% and ultimately increased total debt to $7.6 bil. We remain UW based on non-recurring charges hitting for 20th straight quarter, ongoing balance sheet concerns/shareholder dilution risk, North America underperformance, and near-term declines across various Int’l markets.

Shares of Weatherford International have jumped 12% to $5.81 at 12:12 p.m. today, while Nabors Industries has fallen 3% to $15.79.

Investors have really liked Merck(NYSE:MRK) stock over the last 12 months, with shares jumping around 30%. Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) has performed pretty well also, but not nearly at the level of Merck. The big drugmaker’s stock is up close to 15%.

But past performance doesn’t necessarily mean much for the future. Which of these stocks is the better buy now? Here’s how Pfizer and Merck compare.

The case for Pfizer

One of the top reasons for investors to like Pfizer is its dividend. Pfizer’s dividend yield currently stands at 3.81% — one of the highest of all big pharma stocks. The company increased its dividend in December by 7%, with CEO Ian Read stating that the dividend hike showed Pfizer’s commitment to the dividend as a “key component” of delivering value to shareholders.
