Hot Biotech Stocks For 2018

What happened

Shares of Novavax, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX), a clinical-stage biotech developing vaccines, have risen about 10.7% as of 3:05 p.m. EDT on Thursday. A positive response to the company’s earnings pushed the stock up a couple days ago, but Thursday’s bump comes in response to recent insider share purchases.

So what

Earlier Thursday morning Novavax filed a couple forms the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission requires when insiders buy or sell shares. There are a million reasons for insiders to sell shares of the company they work for, but just one reason to buy. That’s why investors were thrilled to see the company’s CEO, StanleyErck, and CFO, Barclay “Buck” Phillips, broadcast their positive outlook with a combined purchase of 75,000 shares.

You should never blindly follow the trading activity of others, even if they’re running the company. As with the recent post-earnings bump, there just isn’t much here to get excited about.

daily stock market report: CVR Partners LP(UAN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

In trading on Tuesday, basic materials shares declined by 1.82 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included CVR Partners LP (NYSE: UAN), down 10 percent, and Resolute Forest Products Inc (NYSE: RFP), down 9 percent.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Enter CVR Partners LP (NYSE: UAN), the only company in the US to produce fertilizer from petroleum coke (petcoke). Petcoke is a byproduct of petroleum refining, and prices are usually set off coal prices, since these two products compete in the same niche. Thus the same dynamics that currently threaten the distributions of Rentech Nitrogen Partners and Terra Nitrogen Company play in CVR Partners’ favor.

Going forward I will be looking to add investments on my watchlist and trim other positions. It will be interesting to see how an overweight commodity portfolio will perform relative to the rest of the market.

Top 10 Casino Stocks To Watch For 2018

Late last year, Japan legalized casinos in the country, opening up a gaming industry that could generate as much as $30 billion a year in revenues and become the second-largest casino market in the world. As several players scout for licenses, Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) is ready to invest heavily in the region, committing to an initial investment of $10 billion. While this is a significant number, if Las Vegas Sands is able to capture a decent share in the market, it would make sense given the revenue potential of the market. Currently, Macau and Singapore are the largest value drivers of the company, together accounting for more than 80% of its valuation.

The company is heavily dependent on Macau for revenues, and regulation changes in the region have impacted it negatively. At its peak in 2013, Macau’s gaming market had reached a size of $45 billion. However, after stricter regulations imposed by Chinese regulators, revenues started slumping. In 2016, the total amount won by casinos in the region stood at nearly $28 billion. Japan is likely to emerge as a huge market for casinos, with annual revenue estimates ranging from $10 billion to $30 billion.

Second, Baidu swapped its 45% stake in online travel agency Qunar (NASDAQ:QUNR) for a 25% stake in its bigger rival Ctrip (NASDAQ:CTRP). That move effectively merged the two competitors and ended their margin-crushing price war. However, the move also temporarily reduced Baidu’s marketing revenues. CF Industries gained 6.9% to $28.96 today, while the S&P 500 fell 0.2% to 2,181.90. CF Industries has gained 21% in November.

Despite the rally, CF Industries is still down 29% this year, and as recently as Nov.3, Citigroup’s P.J. Juvekar and team were writing that the fertilizer company was “looking more like a 2008 story” after weaker-than-expected earnings. Donald Trump’s election victory, however, has jumpstarted CF Industries and prompted FBN technical analystJC OHara to list it among the top-50 stocks following Trump’s election, noting that “we want to own the stocks that were first to leave the gate…New Momentum should continue.” On Nov. 9, Barron’s Michael Kahn agreed, writing that “CF Industries does merit a look.”

Hot Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Medivation Inc.(MDVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Shares of Medivation Inc (NASDAQ: MDVN) got a boost, shooting up 24 percent to $46.35 amid word of a new report from Bloomberg, saying the company is working with bankers to defend itself against preliminary interest of a takeover. However, Reuters separately reported the company is working with JPMorgan to handle interest from other companies, but said Medivation has no interest in selling itself.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Macro considerations have continued to weigh on stocks whenever they’ve shown signs of life and consensus estimates for many of the large cap companies have been declining. With the sector’s underperformance, the delta in the average PEG ratio for biotech growth companies (excluding Medivation (MDVN)) compared to non-biotech growth companies is slightly wider than it’s been for most of the year. As such, we remain constructive on the sector. That said, while valuations are attractive on a relative basis, there remains some uncertainty for the group and we would not be surprised to see the volatility continue…

  • [By Scott Rubin]

Big gainers on the day included Intersil Corp (NASDAQ: ISIL), which jumped 20 percent on news of a buyout, and Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN), which added 20 percent on a deal with Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) related to its cancer drug. Cotiviti Holdings Inc (NYSE: COTV) lost around 9 percent in the wake of a mid-day sell-off and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO) fell 7 percent in the wake of a management shakeup.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Well, it looks like Medivation (MDVN) now has five suitors after reports that Amgen (AMGN) is joining Pfizer (PFE), Sanofi (SNY), AstraZeneca (AZN) and Novartis (NVS) in considering a bid. Maxim’s Jason Kolbert and Jason McCarthy offer their thoughts:

    Medivation reports tonight at 4:30pm…

We expect the focus to be on the recent proposals from Sanofi (SNY $38.75- NR); Pfizer (PFE $33.40 -NR), AstraZeneca (AZN $28.26-NR) and just today, Amgen (AMGN – $154.18 – NR)…

Medivation is returning to new highs as suitors line up to make acquisition bids. In this scenario what is the right discount rate for modeling purposes?

We believe our model for Xtandi revenues is good, therefore we review our risk rating and determine the following: 30% = $47 15% = $76 10% = $99

With Medivation’s board having now said No to anything less than $65 per share, it suggests to us that the stability and predictability of Xtandi’s revenues is greater than we thought, the risk is lower. Our intermediate risk rating is 15% or $76 fair value.

Shares of Medivation rose 0.3% to $59.22 today, while Pfizer gained 0.5% to $33.56, Sanofi fell 0.5% to $39.07, AstraZeneca dropped 0.6% to $39.07, Novartis declined 0.3% to $74.12, and Amgen ticked up 0.1% to $154.25.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Reports suggest that Gilead Sciences (GILD) and Celgene (CELG) have joined the bidding process forMedivation (MDVN), one that already includes (maybe) Amgen (AMGN), and of course Sanofi (SNY), which is trying to throw out Medivation’s board. Of the three biotech giants, Citigroup’s Robyn Karnauskas and team argue that Amgen is best positioned to win the battle. They explain why:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Last night, Bloomberg reported that Sanofi (SNY) had made a bid for Medivation (MDVN) but had been rebuffed, while noting that other companies–perhaps Gilead Sciences (GILD), Amgen (AMGN) or AstraZeneca (AZN)?–were also on the prowl. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey’s Peter Lawson explains why Medivation might be biotech’s most wanted:

Hot Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Corning Incorporated(GLW)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

3M Co (NYSE: MMM) agreed to sell substantially all of its communication markets division to Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) for $900 million.

Corning expects the deal adding $0.07 to $0.09 per share in FY19 earnings.

  • [By Steve Symington]

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) will release fourth-quarter 2016 results on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017. With shares up more than 44% over the past year, including a modest 4% climb since last quarter’s solid report in October, you can be sure the market will be listening closely to what the glass technologist says. What should investors watch for this time around?

  • [By Frank DiPietro]

When Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW) reported earnings in late January, it committed to continue to reward stockholders handsomely. Its stock price has appreciated nicely over the past 12 months (up roughly 50%) and now it has reiterated its plan to buy back its own shares over the next three years and continue to pay its shareholders a growing dividend. Total cost to the company is projected by management to be at least $12.5 billion through 2019, including annual dividend increases projected to be more than 10%.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate CORNING INC as a Buy with a ratings score of B. This is driven by a number of strengths, which we believe should have a greater impact than any weaknesses, and should give investors a better performance opportunity than most stocks we cover. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, expanding profit margins and notable return on equity. We feel its strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.

  • [By Craig Jones]

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) also had a high options volume in the first half of the session, said Jon Najarian. Almost 8,000 contracts of the December 32 calls were traded and Najarian jumped in. He's going to hold the position for a week.

  • [By Peter Graham]

Back on December 5th of 2013, we added Corning (GLW) to our list around $16 and change. The stock ended up moving to a high of just over $25 per share early last year for roughly a 50% gain. Well, the stock has since come off again trading all the way back down to under $16 per share back in August of last year, before finding its way back up above $18 just yesterday. The context here is two-fold. First, the valuation metrics for GLW are once again suggesting another undervalued opportunity for a Company that is the clear leader in specialty glass and ceramics.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018

On Wednesday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested small cap water and wastewater services stockPure Cycle Corporation (NASDAQ: PCYO) as a long/bullish trade:

Pure Cycle isn’t quite as straightforward.

The aim here is to step into a bigger budding uptrend after a minor pullback. You can see on the daily chart of PCYO that we’ve just been through such a pullback, but as has been the case more often than not of late, the bulls stepped in again before the bears did any real damage. It’s a two steps forward, one step back game.

To fully appreciate where this is all going, however, we have to take a step back and look at a weekly chart of Pure Cycle. It’s in this timeframe we can sense that the stock has mostly been in consolidation mode for the better part of the year, but is now breaking out of that funk (even without the market’s help).

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018: Vuzix Corporation(VUZI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

While the economy’s natural — and recurring — cycles favor different kinds of stocks at different times, not every great trend is necessarily a cyclical one. Sometimes, a trend is rooted in a technological development that changes cultural norms. The advent of the smartphone, for example, has made constant connectivity to the world around part of how we live our daily lives.

These mega-trends present tremendous opportunities for investors too, provided they’re savvy enough to see them coming and play them the right way.

One such mega-trend newly underway right now is the proliferation of wearables… devices that meld clothing (often a wrist-worn device) and technology to perform a function that couldn’t be performed otherwise. Much of the same technology that made the smartphone possible are now ushering in wearables.

It’s not been a smooth beginning. however.

While the buzz was strong and expectations reached a peak two years ago when Fitbit Inc (NYSE:FIT) was all the rage and in the wake of its IPO, the company’s growth wasn’t to be sustained. The company is struggling to muster any growth now, and FIT shares have fallen to a tenth of their value seen in late-2015, when the euphoria was strongest.

Fitbit’s slowdown has been mirrored by other companies in the space. The wearables market only grew 3.1% in Q3 of 2016.

On the flipside, while the debacle of Fitbit — the wearable industry’s iconic company — has been a painful, it’s also been a learning experience. And, it’s not as if the slowdown is unfurling without the wearables market never reaching a respectable size. International Data Corporation estimates were 23 million ‘wearables’ delivered in the third quarter of last year alone.

Moreover, the fizzling of the market hasn’t turned into a reason to swear off wearables as an investment opportunity… quite the opposite, actually. It’s just now become considerably clearer what consumers want an

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.

Thanksgiving is almost here but the exit of both Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation (NYSE: PPC) and Smithfield Foods (NYSE: SFD) to focus on their chicken or pork businesses (the latter was also acquired by the Chinese) leaves just two big Thanksgiving turkey stocks, Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL) and Seaboard Corporation (NYSEAMEX: SEB), for investors to consider. According to the American Far Bureau, a 16-pound turkey will (on average) come in at a total of $22.74 this year or roughly $1.42 per pound for a decrease of 2 cents per pound or a total of 30 cents per whole turkey, compared to 2015. The price drop may be a transition back to the norm as the significant bird flu outbreak last year hurt the nations supply of both turkey and eggs.

The other key benefit for Strategic is that it enjoys industry-leading earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) per available room. For 2012, Strategic generated $81 per room of EBITDA. Compare this to top comps LaSalle Hotel (NYSE: LHO) at $74 per room and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) at $71. The reason for this is that Strategic is much less reliant than its peers on rooms, with much greater exposure to food and beverages. Strategic earns 53% of its revenue from rooms, while its peers get around 66% of revenues from rooms.

Cobalt may not be a familiar metal to most investors, but its an increasingly important strategic mineral for the modern economy (Think high performance alloys andlithium batteries) with small cap mining stock Cobaltech Mining(OTCMKTS: BNCIF; CVE: CSK) focused on developing new sources in more stable locations.

Why Should Investors Care About Cobalt?

Most cobalt is obtained by reducing the cobalt by-products of nickel and copper mining and smelting. For that reason, the copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and Zambia yields most of the cobalt mined worldwide with the political situation in the Congo influencing the price of cobalt significantly as that (unstable) country is currently the major source for the metal.

Cobalts most importance use is in theproduction of high performance alloys that are suitable for turbine blades for gas turbines and jet aircraft engines. Cobalt-based alloys are also corrosion and wear-resistant, making them (along with titanium) useful in medical orthopedic implants and dental prosthetics as theydo not wear down over time.

best stock to invest in now: Terra Nitrogen Company L.P.(TNH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Robert Rapier] While the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.

Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.

For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its efforts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”

During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).

In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly more than $600 million — another illu

best stock to invest in now: Occidental Petroleum Corporation(OXY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We have seen several dividend cuts in the recent past, including Anadarko Petroleum cutting its dividend by 81%…and we expect more companies to follow suit. Chesapeake Energy (CHK), ConocoPhillips (COP), Encana,Marathon Oil and Noble Energy (NBL) are among energy companies that have also cut dividends in the past 12 months, but dividend requirements even after several cuts will consume ~26% of 2016 estimated cash flow at current dividend rates (15% excluding Occidental Petroleum (OXY)) for the large cap E&Ps we cover. We believe most of the companies with a dividend yield of more than 1.5% should consider cutting the dividend and find the following companies more likely than not to reduce dividends:Apache (2.5% yield),Devon Energy (4%),Encana (1.5%) andMarathon Oil (2.5%). We believe Canadian Natural Resource (CNQ) (3.0%) is likely to maintain its dividend while Occidental (4.5%) has the financial strength to maintain or even increase the dividend…
