Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In 2018

Written by Bob Ciura on April 15th, 2017, for Sure Dividend.

Retail is a difficult industry. When trends shift, companies that were on top of the heap one day, can soon find themselves on the way out.

There are only two retail stocks – Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT) – that are on the list of Dividend Aristocrats, a group of stocks with dividend increases for 25+ consecutive years. Click here for the full list of Dividend Aristocrats.

L Brands (NYSE:LB) has not raised its dividend quite that long, as it kept its dividend steady from 2005 to 2010. But in the years since, L Brands turned its dividend growth into high gear. The stock now has a hefty 5% dividend yield. And L Brands has paid 169 quarterly dividends in a row, going back more than 40 years.

Fears of the death of the American mall have punished L Brands, but the negativity is overdone. L Brands is an attractive investment because the stock is cheap, and there is plenty of growth opportunity for the company going forward.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Charles Mizrahi, President and CEO, Hampton Investors, Inc.]

Parker Hannifin (PH) generates strong revenue from its aerospace division, while its primary industrial segment is lagging.

Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In 2018: Sirius XM Radio Inc.(SIRI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) is a company that thrives on of new car sales. If you have had satellite radio and are not solely reliant on what you get for music in streaming or your library, then chances are pretty good that you won’t want to go back to just having old-fashioned FM/AM radio.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

There are a lot of people betting against Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI)these days, even as the stock is hitting 10-year highs. There were 280.1 million shares of Sirius XM sold short at the end of 2016, just below the late-November peak of 285.1 million shares but nearly double the short interest that we were seeing a year ago.

  • [By Peter Graham]

A long term performance chart shows Pandora Mediapeaking in 2014 before heading back to where it started while other streaming media stocks such as large cap satellite radio stockSirius XM Radio Inc (NASDAQ: SIRI) has performed better and InternetTV stock Netflix, Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) has been a homerun:

But before we get to the stock pick, here’s a list of the 10 top-performing Warren Buffett stocks so far this year…

    Company YTD Gains
    Moody’s Corp. (NYSE: MCO) 34.25%
    Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) 30.24%
    Verisign Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN) 29.88%
Restaurant Brands Inc. (NYSE: QSR) 29.16%
WABCO Holdings Inc. (NYSE: WBC) 28.97%
    Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) 26.20%
Liberty Sirius XM Group Class C (Nasdaq: LSXMK) 24.54%
    MasterCard Inc. (NYSE: MA) 24.35%
Liberty Sirius XM Group Class A (Nasdaq: LSXMA) 22.89%
Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: SIRI) 22.81%

Again, we don’t recommend all of the stocks above for retail investors. After all, Warren Buffett is one of the most wealthy and legendary investors in history. He has a completely different set of goals from us.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

The long saga regarding Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) has finally come to a head. Well, maybe. Rather than KKR & Co. L.P. (NYSE: KKR) investing $150 million, Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) will be investing up to $480 million in the streaming music rival. With its ticketing unit sale taking place as well, it might seem that Pandora is getting a great deal and helping to bolster its books.

Priceline Group (NASDAQ:PCLN) was a top contributor during the first quarter as they continue to execute their strategy of connecting the supply of heavily fragmented, independent hospitality providers—primarily in international markets—with demand from the Company’s rapidly expanding user base. While we recognize that the online travel agency (OTA) market in the U.S. has matured, there remains a sizable addressable international market in which Priceline continues to aggressively reinvest, primarily, in organic growth opportunities. From a supply perspective, Priceline Group’s Booking.com site has amassed listings on over 500,000 “alternative” properties—all of which are available for online booking-in addition to well over 600,000 conventional hospitality properties. We believe the value proposition of renting a private residence (i.e., alternative property) is still substantially different from traditional hospitality services, and represents an incremental revenue opportunity for Booking.com. Last, while the multiple on the stock has expanded over the past few quarters, we continue to view Priceline’s valuation as one of the more attractive multiples in our universe, relative to the Company’s exceptional growth, and cash-rich balance sheet.

Thanksgiving is almost here but the exit of both Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation (NYSE: PPC) and Smithfield Foods (NYSE: SFD) to focus on their chicken or pork businesses (the latter was also acquired by the Chinese) leaves just two big Thanksgiving turkey stocks, Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL) and Seaboard Corporation (NYSEAMEX: SEB), for investors to consider. According to the American Far Bureau, a 16-pound turkey will (on average) come in at a total of $22.74 this year or roughly $1.42 per pound for a decrease of 2 cents per pound or a total of 30 cents per whole turkey, compared to 2015. The price drop may be a transition back to the norm as the significant bird flu outbreak last year hurt the nations supply of both turkey and eggs.

Top 5 Cheap Stocks To Own For 2018

The market has been moving higher, and at this point you want to find a strong name to invest in if you have cash on the sidelines. I published an idea on Monday morning that suggested putting that cash to work in TNA as things looked good for growth, but maybe you want to take some of that leverage off the table here and book that gain. That is fine, but you need to be long in this market.

So I set up a quick screen to find some strong stocks that are up big over the last three months. Lets take a look at a few of the 37 stocks that hit my screen of strong performers.

I Hate Waste

When I was growing up my mother drove an idea in my head. She would tell me that to waste is a sin, so we were recycling long before it became fashionable. I had to bring home my lunch bag so we didnt have to use a new one. When I had packed lunches in the office, I would bring home the bags that held my sandwich or chips extending my cheapness to new levels. At the very least I could rest easy knowing that I was not wasting.

Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Buy Right Now

Everything has gone up. The "Trump Bump" has turned into a frenzy…   Nothing is cheap anymore… right?   My friend, you are not looking hard enough…   Something cheap (and hated) is always out there! Sometimes you just have to look past the headlines to find it…   For example, did you know there is an asset out there – that trades in the U.S. – that is currently trading for 50% less than it traded for 40 years ago in 1977?   It's true. Take a look…
Not only is it down from 1977 prices… It has fallen more than 40% since late 2015!   When an asset is in freefall like this, investors give up on it. Speculators stop buying it. And when it gets really bad, people start betting it will keep falling. And that's when I get interested.

Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Buy Right Now: Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc.(WEN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Upgrades had a big impact on stocks today. Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is estimated to report its quarterly earnings at $0.14 per share on revenue of $663.74 million.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

KeyBanc analysts upgraded fast food restaurant operator The Wendy’s Co (WEN) on Friday, noting that the company has a number of positive developments that could provide a floor for the stock.

The analysts upgraded WEN from “Underweight” to “Hold.”

KeyBanc analyst Christopher O’Cull said, “We are raising our rating for The Wendy’s Company to HOLD as we believe: 1) Wendy’s SRS performance will diverge from the industry for the foreseeable future as new products are supported by more effective use of marketing dollars; 2) better menu and promotional management will lead to improved franchisee profitability (a focus of the new CFO Todd Penegor); and 3) the opportunity to extend the re-franchising program will provide a floor on the stock.”

Wendy’s shares were up 7 cents, or 0.81%, during pre-market trading on Friday. The stock is up 57.01% year-to-date.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Argus Research upgraded fast food restaurant operator The Wendy’s Co (WEN) on Thursday, noting that the company’s store remodeling and new menus should help drive higher sales.

The analysts upgraded WEN from “Hold” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $10. This price target suggests a 21% upside to the stock’s Wednesday closing price of $8.25.

Wendy’s shares were up 24 cents, or 2.91%, during early morning trading on Thursday. The stock is up 54.19% year-to-date.

  • [By Jim Jubak, Senior Markets Editor, MoneyShow.com]

It’s hard for any company to raise prices in the current non-inflationary environment. But it’s especially hard right now for operators of fast food restaurants, given the intense price competition in a very crowded marketplace. McDonald’s sales growth in recent quarters has been driven by the success of its Dollar Menu, so raising prices in that segment are a big deal for the company. In addition, pushback from franchisees who say they can’t afford to refurbish their stores, given higher charges from McDonald’s hits at one of McDonald’s key advantages in its market—it’s ability to refresh stores more frequently than competitors. A McDonald’s refresh at $600,000 on average, according to the company, costs substantially more than a remodel at Burger King (BKW) at $300,000 or Wendy’s (WEN) at $375,000 for the least expensive version. McDonald’s restaurants average $2.5 million in annual sales.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

And that’s despite Burger King and Wendy’s (NASDAQ:WEN) posting higher quarterly comps for years. The restaurant industry itself may be experiencing a slowdown, and fast food is falling with it after having been one of the few areas notching consistent gains, but it means McDonald’s growth was merely an aberration.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Kohls Corp. (NYSE: KSS) has faced an incredibly tough year so far, with its stock down nearly 25%, not to mention its facing the onslaught of e-commerce from sites like Amazon. Faced with the problem of adapt or die, Kohls is taking steps to change its format, but is it too late?

The next market worry is retail, with shares of Macy’s (M) falling over 14%, Kohl’s (KSS) down 19% and L Brands (LB) sinking more than 7%.

Cramer said the good news is that money is not leaving the stock market, it’s simply moving from the new winners back to the old winners, stocks like Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL) , two Action Alerts PLUS holdings.

It was a rough 2016 holiday season for brick-and-mortar retailers. Department store shares got thumped last week after Macy’s (NYSE:M) and Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS) both lowered their full-year earnings guidance and said their comparable-stores sales dropped. Those two stocks fell by double digits.

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

2017 Retail Death No. 2: Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS): Kohl’s slashed its full-year forecast of earnings per share to $3.60-$3.65 just yesterday (Jan. 5) – down from $3.80-$4.00 roughly two months ago in November 2016. Its reason for doing so was comparable holiday sales, which fell 2.7% in 2016 from fourth-quarter 2015.

By now, we all know retailers are facing a tough time. More and more, people are choosing to shop online, putting sales under pressure and leaving many with too many stores. Some department stores have begun to acknowledge the problems–but will they be able to adjust quickly enough in a rapidly changing landscape? Credit Suisse analyst Christian Bussand team believe this process is “well under way” but that didn’t stop them from downgrading Kohl’s (KSS) and J.C. Penney (JCP), even as they upgraded Nordstrom (JWN) and Burlington Stores(BURL). They explain why:

SpaceX made another huge step toward becoming the space industry’s king of reusable hardware.

On Friday it launched a used spacecraft (the Dragon) on top of a partially used rocket (the Falcon 9) for the first time ever.

Liftoff occurred just before 10:40 a.m. ET at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, and everything went off without a hitch. The first-stage Falcon 9 booster used in Friday’s launch was safely recovered once again, so it could potentially be used in a third mission.

The fact that SpaceX can re-fly large portions of its hardware is a big deal. Not long ago, many in the space industry didn’t think it could be done. It’s a stunning feat because it allows SpaceX to cheapen the price of a single launch.

The mission is part of SpaceX’s ongoing partnership with NASA to complete unmanned trips to the International Space Station.

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft will dock at the station on Sunday. On board is more than 4,800 pounds of cargo, including science experiments and supplies for the crew.

Top Cheap Stocks To Own For 2018

A few years ago, Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) introduced a new class of cheaper “basic economy” fares to help it compete with ultra-low cost carriers on certain routes. Last year, American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) and United Continental (NYSE:UAL) confirmed that they would introduce their own basic economy fares to stay competitive.

Earlier this week, American and United began selling these basic economy tickets — but only for a handful of routes. This will allow them to see how customers react before rolling out basic economy more broadly.

The idea behind Basic Economy

Delta Air Lines launched basic economy fares to solve a particular problem. Delta was matching low fares offered by various budget carriers. Customers buying those cheap fares, typically far in advance, would get to select the best economy-class seats on the flight. Meanwhile, business travelers who booked just a week or two before the flight and paid much higher fares would often end up stuck in the middle seats.

Here are just a few of the big-headline IP theft cases from 2015 – the year they hit an all-time high…

On May 7, 2015, Xiawen Huang, a dual U.S.-China citizen, was arrested in North Carolina for stealing IP from two energy firms for which he once worked and later setting up a competing company in China using Chinese government funds and the stolen IP. He pled guilty in October of that year and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. On May 19, 2015, former U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration announced the arrest of a Chinese professor and the indictment of five other Chinese citizens in what turned out to be a decade-long scheme to steal microelectronics designs from American companies on behalf of the Chinese government. The men’s cases are still pending, but they remain under house arrest. On Dec. 7, 2015, the FBI arrested a former software engineer for International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) in China for allegedly stealing proprietary source code from his one-time employer in the United States on behalf of Beijing’s government, according to Reuters on Dec. 8, 2015. He plead guilty in May of this year, with an added charge of “economic espionage,” and is due to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas in White Plains, NY, tomorrow (Oct. 13, 2017).

These few cases, and the hundreds of them since (Bloomberg reported today that the FBI can’t release exact figures insofar as case amount, only that they’re indeed “in the hundreds”), gives Lighthizer plenty to work with in regards to President Trump’s executive order probe.

Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Watch For 2018

One stock not participating in the Trump rally since November’s election is Nike (NYSE:NKE). Wall Street investors are re-evaluating the company’s long-term future, if tariffs on Nike’s overseas production become reality in 2017. While a far-fetched notion a year or two ago, Trump has promised to “punish” companies that import goods into America, rightly or wrongly.

Nike stock was already coming off its most overvalued price point ever in 2015. Now it may have to deal with a whole new set of rules for manufacturing costs, supply chain movements, and public/consumer perception of its brand’s worth.

Is “Made in America” fever on the verge of becoming the front burner political issue of 2017? If so, Nike’s brand may see serious backlash by consumers. Just ended in December, Georgetown students highlighted the poor working conditions of Nike’s Vietnam factories with a campus sit-in.

Nike import business model

Considering Nike’s fortune has been built on an import business model, using ultra-cheap foreign labor in Asia to manufacture shoes and apparel, investors have plenty to worry about. The definition of a business profit is selling a good or service for more than it costs to produce. Nike’s success is largely a function of making goods in Asia for a cut rate, then shipping product to America (and elsewhere in the world) to be sold to dramatically richer consumers. Slick marketing, including the use of sports idols to hock its brand name to children, applying the U.S. and international tax codes to full advantage, and riding free trade to America from Asian production facilities have been the recipe for oversized business profits for four decades at Nike.

Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Watch For 2018: International Business Machines Corporation(IBM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jack Foley]

The core issue for Intel is whether it can replace its PC derived income growth with growth from its Data centersegment. Many tech companies like Intel are in a transition at present, but Intel’s advantage here is that at least it is reporting top line growth unlike other tech companies such as International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM). Intel, in my opinion, will continue to grow meaningfully in telecom and the Cloud segments, but its most recent guidance probably points to declines in the Client Computing Group (CCG)next quarter. Weak PC demand is the cause for this. Furthermore, weak server demand is another issue in the Data center segment that has brought down expected growth rates in this segment to single figures for 2016. Nevertheless, Cloud sales to service providers are much more robust and grew by 32%, which resulted in the Data center divisiongrowing10% year-over-year with $4.5 billion in revenue for the last quarter.

IBM dropped, while the S&P 500 declined 0.2% to 2,338.17.

Barclays analysts Mark Moskowitz and Daniel Gaide contend that IBM’s earnings “suggest [a] turnaround might be elusive.” They explain why:

The major Y/Y deterioration in gross margin, and IBMs dependence on discrete items to pad EPS, stand to frustrate investors. We highlighted last week that the stocks rally could come to an end as it is time to show progress on the turnaround. 1Q results did not deliver much progress and could signal that investors might have given IBM too much credit to deliver on its ambitious turnaround built around the cloud and cognitive. We recommend investors stay on the sideline.

Energy investors are making a big mistake…   They're "bottom fishing" in the major oil and gas stocks… trying to catch the bottom.   This, of course, is a bad idea. Energy stocks have been crashing this year. But expectations are still high.   History tells us this kind of bottom fishing won't end well. The smart move is to wait for a better entry point before getting in.   Let me explain…   Bottom fishing can be hard to avoid… Instead of buying what's going up – what's in an uptrend – investors have a habit of buying what's falling.   It seems like a smart move…   You're buying what's cheap. You're buying what no one else wants. And heck, if you get lucky, you've got a remarkable success story to brag about.   But those success stories are rare… And trying to catch one can be costly.

Shares of General Electric have dropped 3.8% so far this year, with everything from its accounting to weaker margins being blamed for its weakness. Barclays’ Scott Davis and team, however, spoke with a source they call the “smartest man in the room,” who just so happens to be “nibbling” on General Electric now. With this backdrop, our top picks are Honeywell, Ingersoll-Rand, and Danaher, with a positive bias on Neutral-rated United Technologies, while we are most negative onGeneral Electric and Rockwell Automation (ROK), with a negative bias on N-rated $51.92 Emerson Electric (EMR)…

Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Buy For 2018: Kohl’s Corporation(KSS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Kohl’s (KSS) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after offering earnings guidance that was well below analyst forecasts.

    Getty Images

    Kohl’sdropped 19% to $42.01 today, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.1% to 2,269.00.

RBC’s Brian Tunick and Bilun Boyner worry that the bear case gas been revived:

Kohl’s reported Holiday comps of -2%, below our model for -0.5%, as sales remained volatile through the quarter. Similar to early commentary by peers, stronger sales for Black Friday and the week before Christmas were offset by softness in early November and December. In line with Q3, the strongest categories were men’s, home, and footwear while accessories was most challenging.

In addition to the sales downside,Kohl’s lowered its EPS guidance to $3.603.65 (from $3.804.00) to reflect lower than expected gross margins (we estimate were down 5060bps versus our prior model for up 40bp), which was mainly due to mix, timing of sales, and promotional environment as the company worked to exit the year with clean inventory positions (planning to end the year with inventories down mid-to-high SD)…

AlthoughKohl’s still has a reasonable 1H’17 opportunity with easy gross margin compares, Under Armour (UA) launch, and potential for a new CFO, we believe disappointing Holiday sales and the guidance cut removed most of the market’s excitement around a return to momentum, reviving the secular bear case around department stores and Kohl’s. Maintaining Underperform and lowering price target to $42.

Kohl’s market capitalization fell to $7.7 billion today from $9.2 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $673 million on sales of $19 billion in 2016.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The trifecta of headwinds that plagued UA last year (overexposure to sporting goods, overexposure to NA, and overexposure to performance apparel) has not abated, in our opinion. While UA is working to diversify its channel mix as evidenced by its recent entry into Kohl’s (KSS) (and forthcoming entry into DSW (DSW) and Famous Footwear later this year), our checks suggest the apparel segmentation efforts have fallen short of expectations. In addition, we are concerned about the lackluster trends in footwear (and Curry) as it is a key element to the growth story. Specifically, we believe the combination of a lack of newness/differentiation in the Curry 3 coupled with too many releases too soon at a higher price point ($140) resulted in tepid Q1 sales. The latest Curry 3Zero release at $120 appears to be doing modestly better. We highly regard the brand and its long-term growth prospects; however, the product and geographic diversification occurring now will take time to yield results. As such, we remain cautious on UA heading into its 1Q17 report on Thursday, April 27 BMO.

Kohls Corp. (NYSE: KSS) has faced an incredibly tough year so far, with its stock down nearly 25%, not to mention its facing the onslaught of e-commerce from sites like Amazon. Faced with the problem of adapt or die, Kohls is taking steps to change its format, but is it too late?

    The Bad

Bonds behaved poorly. The 10 year and long bond rose by between 3-4 basis points in yield. I bought a trading position in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond ETF (TLT) in front of a possible yearend pension rebalance. Big pharma stinks up the joint, again. Spec biotech is weakening again (Portola Pharmaceuticals PTLA, ACADIA Pharmaceuticals ACAD, etc.) Retail cant get out of its way. I am long JC Penney (JCP) and have trading positions in Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) . (Nike (NKE) , Nordstrom (JWN) , Lowe’s (LOW) are downside features).

7 Dividend Growth Stocks Worth Owning

Do you invest in dividend growth stocks? If you don’t, you ought to consider doing so. These dividend stocks to buy could be your ticket to a better retirement.

Many dividend investors get caught up focusing on yield when the growth is what’s truly important. By utilizing the power of compound interest, investors can achieve higher returns by merely owning the stocks of companies who regularly hike their dividends.

A Canadian finance site, Hardbacon, provides an excellent example why investing in dividend growth stocks is a sound idea:

“If you invest in a stock which pays $1 in dividends a year and costs $25, it means it yields 4% at the time you buy it (dividend yield on cost),” wrote Sam Kovacs. “If the company increases its dividend 10 cents every year, in 10 years those same stocks which you bought for $25 will be paying out $2 in dividends, an outstanding 8% yield on cost.”

That’s the power of income-growth stocks. Here are seven dividend stocks to buy that are worth owning. If that’s not enough to get your mouth salivating, each has hiked its dividends in 2017 by 20% or more!

If I told you that I could sell you a dividend growth stock that’s increased its annual payout for 14 consecutive years, is yielding more than 2%, and raised its 2017 dividend by 21.4%, you’d want to know more.

But slap this description on Minneapolis-based Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) and you’re likely to turn very skeptical. After all, Best Buy is supposed to be getting slaughtered in the electronics arena by Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN).

Not so fast.

Take a quick look at Best Buy’s stock chart and you’ll see that it’s currently trading within 3% of its all-time high of $69.39. In 2017, it gained 64% on the year and that’s after a 45% gain in 2016.

During the critical holiday shopping season, Best Buy held its own against Amazon according to industry analysis.

I’ve been a fan of CEO Hubert Joly all the way back to 2013 when the former hospitality executive implemented his turnaround plan for the electronics retailer.

Don’t be fooled by the company’s so-called weak Q3 2017 results. Same-store sales grew 4.4% and it earned 78 cents a share despite lowering prices to match Amazon, etc.

Best Buy could easily hit $100 in 2018.

The U.S. economy is unbelievably healthy right now and nobody benefits more from this than Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:MTN), North America’s largest operator of ski resorts.

Its stock hasn’t had a down year since 2011 and although it’s down in early 2018 trading, all the signs point to another stellar year on the slopes.

“We have continued to drive significant growth in our destination markets which represent approximately 60% of our increase in pass units,” CEO Rob Katz said recently. “We continue to see strength across all geographies, with particularly strong performance in Northern California, the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast and continued solid growth in Colorado and British Columbia.“

The sale of season passes as of the beginning of December were up 14% in units and 20% in dollars over last year; they’re not headed downhill anytime soon.

Acquisitions drive Vail Resort’s growth — Whistler Blackcomb being its most significant to date — and it’s not about to stop looking for resorts to buy that cater to both the affluent destination visitor as well as the local season-pass skier.

We might be aging but not quickly enough to slow Vail Resorts over the next decade. MTN might be the best dividend growth stock of the bunch.

Higher energy prices to a limited extent drive stocks like Oneok, Inc. (NYSE:OKE), one of the biggest midstream service providers in the U.S.

As most of the Northeast fight a brutal winter storm early in 2018, natural gas prices have spiked to unprecedented levels; a problem made worse by the fact there’s a shortage of pipelines shipping natural gas to cities like New York and Boston.

Oneok can’t help with the Northeast as its pipelines and processing facilities are primarily west of the Mississippi River. However, it can help with the processing and shipping of natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) in the regions it serves.

On January 4 it announced that it’s building $1.4 billion pipeline to transport NGLs from the Rocky Mountains to its Mid-Continent NGL facilities providing the middle part of the country with a more significant energy supply.

In 2017, OKE stock was relatively flat, down 2% on the year, significantly lower than the S&P 500, which was up 22%.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that Oneok upped its annual dividend this past year by 21.1% to $2.98, providing a juicy 5.3% yield — double the 10-year U.S. Treasury.

As energy stocks go, Oneok’s a keeper.

This mostly unheralded stock is currently trading within 5% of its all-time high of $80.47. In 2017, it was up 39%, which followed an 85% gain in 2016. Over the past decade, it’s achieved an annualized total return of 12%, 300 basis points better than the S&P 500.

Currently yielding 1.9% after all of these gains, Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corp. (NYSE:AGM), better known as Farmer Mac, continues to be the agricultural industry’s best friend providing credit to agricultural lenders and businesses across the U.S.

With the need for food production likely to remain high indefinitely combined with a rigorous underwriting process, an investment in Farmer Mac is as reliable as they come.

In 2017, Farmer Mac upped the annual dividend by 38.5% to $1.44 a share. That’s money in the bank. Five years ago, AGM stock paid an annual dividend of just $0.48. In 2016, the company initiated a 30% payout target of core earnings which should keep the dividend growing at double digits on an annual basis.

If you like a little capital appreciation with your dividend growth stocks, AGM is for you.

Can you guess the last time UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:UNH) stock lost money on an annual basis? Try the Reagan era. I’m just kidding. It was 2008. Since then it’s rattled off nine consecutive years of gains.

UNH operates two business segments: Health Benefits, which provides healthcare insurance to millions of Americans and Optum, its provider of healthcare services. Together, they play a big part in the wellness of America.

In December, UNH announced that it was buying the Davita Medical Group for $4.9 billion from Davita Inc (NYSE:DVA). Davita wants to focus on its dialysis business, so Optum was a natural home for the company’s nearly 300 clinics and six outpatient surgical centers.

When you’ve got a market cap of nearly $220 billion like UnitedHealth, a $4.9 billion acquisition is coffee money — but it provides additional growth for Optum, so it’s a win/win.

Bottom line: UNH stock isn’t a big yielder at 1.3%, but it’s track record of growing its stock price should be enough for most investors.

Of all 31 stocks on my list, Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE:ITW) has the fifth-longest streak for the consecutive number of years raising its annual dividend at 43. In 2017, it raised its dividend by 20.0% to $3.12 per share. Since 2012, it’s grown its annual dividend by 15% on a compounded basis with the last two years seeing increases above that average.

Yes, it only yields 1.9%, but the dividend yield isn’t nearly as important as the dividend growth because a growing dividend typically is the result of growing earnings.

Usually, I’m not a fan of share repurchases, but ITW does a good job keeping track of how it’s doing on its buybacks. Over the past five years it’s repurchased $11.4 billion of its shares reducing the share count by 28%, but more importantly, earning a 24% internal rate of return on those purchases.

Even better, over half the $11.4 billion was used to buy shares in 2013 and 2014 at prices of $85 or less — it currently trades at $166.

Over the past five years, the industrial conglomerate’s been on a transformation to building a business that’s growing its margins and organic revenues while responsibly allocating capital.

Frankly, Illinois Tool Works is what General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) ought to aspire to.

Who doesn’t love the Cheesecake Factory Inc (NASDAQ:CAKE)?

Seriously, anyone who doesn’t enjoy a meal at the restaurant chain best known for its variety of cheesecake desserts every now and again, really has a hard time letting loose.

Sure, it’s not gourmet, but when you’ve managed to increase your dividend by 20.8% in a single year and your stock is currently yielding 2.3%, the cheesecake isn’t the only thing worth trying at the California company.

The Cheesecake Factory might be old news in the U.S., but here in Canada where I live, the first location just opened this past November in Toronto at Yorkdale Mall, Canada’s most productive mall regarding sales per square foot.

Lineups were snaking through the mall of people trying to get their fill. Canada could easily use another 19 or 20. It will do very well here despite the fact Canadians have a hard time getting excited about cookie-cutter restaurant chains.

Cheesecake Factory’s financials might not be as strong as past years but its growth drivers — Canada, getting its cheesecake and other desserts into the grocery stores and investments in North Italia and Flower Child restaurants — suggest it’s got plenty to push the stock higher in the coming years.

As of this writing, Will Ashworth did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Top Cheap Stocks To Invest In 2018

Year-end gasoline prices will be at their highest level since 2014, according to the AAA. This will be the case despite a modest drop in prices from current levels.

Today, the average price of a gallon of regular nationwide is $2.51. The same day last year, the price was 38 cents lower. Much of this has to do with the price of crude, which was $52 a barrel a year ago and has traded above $57 for over a week. Over the course of the year, gas prices peaked September 11 at $2.67 and hit a low for the year at $2.23 on July 5.

Commenting on the trend, Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson, said:

Despite a forecasted 5 to 20 cents decrease in coming weeks, motorists will see higher than expected December gas prices – especially compared to year-end prices from 2015 and 2016. Driving factors for cheaper gas prices this winter include colder temperatures, the threat of inclement weather and online shopping.

Prices continue to fluctuate significantly across the nation by state. Prices in states close to the refineries south of Houston on the Gulf Coast have stayed low, with temporary blips during hurricanes. The average price in Alabama for the year has been $2.14. The price in Louisiana has been $2.18. In Mississippi, it has averaged $2.15 and in Texas $2.19.

The market is treating Chipotle as if it is an Amazon, Tesla, Apple or Google, when in fact all they do is make burritos. With the money it would cost you to buy Chipotle today @ $14 billion dollars you could buy Wendy’s (WEN), Cheesecake Factory (CAKE), Papa John’s International (PZZA), and Dunkin’ Brands (DNKN). Chipotle would need to generate at least $24 in earnings per share in order to justify the current market cap — they are not even expected to generate half of that next year. Chipotle is expected to report Q1 on April 25 and the market, in my opinion, has already more than priced in good news.

Pent Up Demand Pushing Cyclical Stocks

We are coming out of a lengthy period of decreased spending in the wake of 2008-09, which has built pent up demand for automobiles, housing and capital expenditures. The average age of vehicles on the road has reached a record high of 11.4 years. Demand for new houses fell off dramatically since the Great Recession. The average U.S. home was built in 1974 and continues to age.
As people have chosen to fix rather than replace their vehicles and homes, we’ve seen the replacement-type industries do very well. Auto Retail’s second quarter sales and earnings per share were up 14.7% and 18.6%, respectively. Home improvement retail grew sales nearly 10% with earnings up 20% from second quarter 2012.
Adding to the pent up demand for housing is the number of young people living with their parents rather than buying or renting on their own. According to real-estate marketplace Trulia, the number of “missing households” (Americans who would currently be owning or renting a home if pre-recession economic trends had continued) was up to 2.4 million in March. More than half of these missing households are 18 to 34-year-olds.
This pent up demand extends beyond just the immediate products being bought by consumers. Businesses have held off replacing durable goods since the recession.
