Top Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2018

It's one of the few constants in the financial markets…   Popular investment ideas are usually losers.   As we often preach, it pays to be a contrarian. Or as billionaire investor Warren Buffett has famously said, "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful."   Whatever phrase you choose… whenever the "crowd" is heavily betting one way, it's often a good time to take the other side of that bet.    We were reminded of this fact when we saw the Commitments of Traders ("COT") report on the U.S. Treasury market earlier this week…   If you're not familiar, the COT is a weekly government report that tracks the bets of different types of traders in different futures markets, including U.S. Treasurys.

PNC Financial Services (PNC) ended the week on a down note, despite better-than-expected first-quarter earnings.

PNC said it earned $1.96 per share on revenue that climbed6% to $3.88 billion. Analysts were looking for earnings per share of $1.83 on $3.8 billion of revenue.

A couple of analysts notes about the quarter are trickling in.

Evercore ISI’s John Pancari reitearted an Outperform rating and $139 price target:

We came away from 1Q17 results with greater confidence in our constructive view on the shares, particularly as balance sheet growth strengthens, NIM upside materializes, operative leverage improves, and credit remains contained.

Raymond James’s Michael Rose reiterated a Market Perform rating on the stock:

Excluding a positive valuation adjustment, recognition of deferred issuance costs related to the redemption of all REIT preferred securities on March 15, and fair value adjustments related to Visa Class B shares, operating EPS was also $1.96. Stronger than forecast revenue (both net interest income and fee revenue), a lower than forecast loan loss provision, and a lower than modeled tax rate more than offset higher noninterest expenses versus our model. Excluding losses on the sales of securities and the impact of mortgage servicing rights (MSR) hedging activity, we peg core EPS at $1.95.

PNC closed down 0.2% to $115.80 on Thursday.

Who is “the market” and how does it “want” to go down? Where’s the commandment that says stocks have to go lower? Who decides that today people who own stocks are by and large going to lose money? And why, of all things, does the market not want to go higher? Didn’t the CEO of the biggest bank, JPMorgan (JPM) , say things are great? Didn’t Wells Fargo (WFC) , after all of that scandal, still show some growth, a sign that it is putting the rough patch behind it? Didn’t Citigroup (C) have its best quarter in years? Wasn’t PNC Financial (PNC) even better, clear triumphs on every single line item? The word “perfect” comes to mind, as in Perfect National Corp. The market is treating Chipotle as if it is an Amazon, Tesla, Apple or Google, when in fact all they do is make burritos. With the money it would cost you to buy Chipotle today @ $14 billion dollars you could buy Wendy’s (WEN), Cheesecake Factory (CAKE), Papa John’s International (PZZA), and Dunkin’ Brands (DNKN). Chipotle would need to generate at least $24 in earnings per share in order to justify the current market cap — they are not even expected to generate half of that next year. Chipotle is expected to report Q1 on April 25 and the market, in my opinion, has already more than priced in good news.

Keurigs plight (actually, JABs) is worsening, with the K-cup market slowing to almost no growth now, and Keurig continuing to lose own brands share. Starbucks (SBUX) echoed the notion of a K-cup market slowdown at its seminar on Wednesday (and is guiding for its [consumer packaged goods, or CPG,] growth below recent trends), but it expects to increase its share of total CPG coffee to 20% from 15%. Come early February it will be a year since the closing of the Keurig deal for JAB Holdings. The pressure on JAB is more significant if we take into account the high leverage of the deal (JAB contributed one fourth of the $12Bn price tag). It is a tough predicament. On the one hand we argue that to make that deal work, they need to buy more (own) brands either from the retail channel (that can be extended to CPG: Dunkin (DNKN)? Panera (PNRA)?), or outright buy CPG brands (like the entire Kraft Heinz portfolio, and or Tata Groups Eight OClock brand). But can/how do they fund these deals? Maybe Mars and Warren Buffett (Mars is involved in office coffee with Starbucks), private equity, and or 3G can help? While this note is not about Positive-rated Mondelez, we have mentioned before a scenario where Kraft Heinz buys Mondelez and partly funds the deal by selling its own CPG coffee business (~$3Bn we say) to JAB as well as divests the Mondelez 20% plus stakes in Keurig (North America) and Jacobs Douwe Egberts (Western Europe), which together at this stage are worth ~$7-8Bn. But, yes, JAB will need deep-pocket partners and generous lenders. Net, JAB needs to do something soon.

Top Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2018: The Baltic Dry Index Soaring, and Double Crown Resources (DDCC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Despite the conclusions that may be drawn by the renewed weakness of the Baltic Dry Index, demand for commodities isn’t drying up. In fact, most commodities continue to see increased consumption… including the dry goods the Baltic Dry Index is supposed to measure shipping costs for. The Baltic Dry Index is rolling over again simply because as much as the world continues to up their need for materials such as iron ore, grains, and gravel, the market to deliver those goods remains saturated. That is, too many boats, trains and trucks are fighting for the existing level of business, pulling the value of the Baltic Dry Index and other shipping-cost measures lower. After all, the BDI is ultimately just a measure of the daily shipping rates for maritime vessels – it’s not actually a measure of materials consumption.

Not only does a falling Baltic Dry Index not work against young-and-hungry company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC), it may actually favor it.

Hypothetical question: What if there was a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt (goods normally delivered in drybulk vessels) yet still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers? There is. It’s called Translock2, or Translock Squared, and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods, and how users of those goods handle and distribute them.

The nearby picture is a Translock2 container. It should look familiair, in that it’s essentially an intermodal container in terms of size and shape, but mechanically serves as a delivery and dispensing platform for drybulk goods. When most investors think of potential competitive threats to drybulk shippers like Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK) or Euroseas Ltd. (NASDAQ:ESEA), Double Crown Resources Inc (OTCMKTS:DDCC) doesn’t come to mind. Indeed, DDCC doesn’t come to mind for many investors at all, as for all intents and purposes the company it is today didn’t exist until a few months ago. Age, however, has nothing to do with how disruptive it could prove to be for the likes of Euroseas or Star Bulk Carriers. Its underlying idea is brilliant, and it’s only a matter of time before it catches on within the commodity-transportation community.

What if there was a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt – normally delivered in drybulk vessels – but still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers (the big 20-foot boxes that fit on a truck and a train and on top of the deck of a boat)? There is. It’s called Translock2 (Translock Squared). It was designed by Double Crown Resources, and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods.

The nearby image is a Translock2 container. It should look familiar – it’s essentially an intermodal container in terms of size and shape, but mechanically is a delivery and dispensing platform for drybulk goods. The design allows commodities like sand or livestock feed to be moved with all the flexibility of intermodal transportation, but without any of the headache of aggregating and splitting up those goods to get them properly shipped to their final destination. With Translock2, drybulk purchases are packaged up by the seller at the supply source, and then delivered — just as ordered — all the way to the buyer’s site in the container. No material is lost en route, and no distributor or middleman needs to bother splitting up one large order into smaller ones.

Its development is worth noting, as it explicitly circumvents the need for drybulk ves

Despite the lackluster economic headlines and so-so pricing, commodities aren’t being used less and less. Indeed, most commodities continue to see growing consumption. It’s not only a scenario that works in favor of young-and-hungry company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC), but what makes Double Crown such a compelling opportunity is that it’s rather insensitive to commodity price fluctuation.

What’s the biggest risk and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt? Normally they’re delivered in drybulk vessels, which works, but is rather ineffective. At various points between a supplier and a customer, such goods have to be split up, re-routed, taken off a boat and put on a train (or vice versa). Not only do all the middlemen get expensive, mistakes and spillage cost money.

It’s not only a scenario that bodes well for an up-and-coming company Double Crown Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:DDCC).

What if there were a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt [which are normally delivered in drybulk vessels] but still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers… the big box containers that are just at home on the deck of a ship as they are on a flatbed truck as they are on a train car? There is. It’s called Translock2 (Translock Squared), and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods. Commodity companies now have an alternative way of shipping their product without constantly handling it – and losing some of it – en route to its final destination.

The nearby image is a Translock2 container. If it looks vaguely familiar to most, it’s essentially an intermodal container in terms of size and shape, but mechanically serves as delivery and dispensing platform for drybulk goods like rice, fertilizer, etc. The design allows commodities to be moved with all the flexibility of intermodal transportation, but without any of the headache of aggregating and splitting up those goods en route to their final destination. With Translock2, drybulk purchases are packaged up by the seller at the supply source, and then delivered — just as ordered — all the way to the buyer’s site in the container. No muss, no fuss, and no middleman. It cuts down on expenses, and lost material.

Its development worth noting, in that it explicitly circumvents the need for drybulk maritime vessels, and turns intermodal container ships into dry cargo vessels.

The recent unveiling of the Translock 2 containers won’t actually change the amount of drybulk material we as a species consume. But, it will offer dry goods suppliers an easier and often cheaper option to expensive and often difficult dry goods vessel shipping. Remember, the Baltic Dr

In fact, most commodities are still seeing increased consumption, including the dry goods the Baltic Dry Index is supposed to gauge transportation for. The Baltic Dry Index remains in a bit of a long-term funk because, as much as the world continues to increase their need for materials like iron ore, grain, and gravel, the world also still has too much capacity to deliver them. What happened

Downbeat holiday sales reports byKohl’s(NYSE:KSS) andMacy’s(NYSE:M) pushed the department store sector, and much of retail, in the red on Thursday. As of 11:38 a.m. EST, Kohl’s was down 19.5%, Macy’s was down 14.4%, and peers includingNordstrom(NYSE: JWN) andJ.C. Penney(NYSE: JCP) also tumbled, falling 9.8% and 6.7%, respectively.

So what

The news was not a big surprise as department store chains came into the quarter struggling, posting comparable sales declines as consumers increasingly take their business to e-commerce outlets likeAmazon.com.

Macy’s, considered the leader of the industry, came into the holiday season with seven straight quarterly comparable sales declines, and said that sales at established stores fell 2.1% in November and December. CEO Terry Lundgren summed up the quarter saying, “While our sales trend is consistent with the lower end of our guidance, we had anticipated sales would be stronger. We believe that our performance during the holiday season reflects the broader challenges facing much of the retail industry.” He noted that online sales were up by double digits, and said performance was strong in some areas like apparel, fine jewelry, and furniture. The company said full-year comparable sales would come in at the low end of its previously stated -2.5% to -3% range, and lowered its full-year earnings per share forecast to $2.95-$3.10 from $3.15-$3.40.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Buy For 2018

Companies hate to cut dividends. Knowing the backlash they’ll get from stockholders, many executives and board members consider it a desperate act of last resort. They will halt non-discretionary expenditures, reduce payroll and overhead, and even take on debt in order to maintain distributions.

And that’s exactly why dividend hikes send such a strong bullish signal. A company wouldn’t bump quarterly payouts to $0.60 per share from $0.50 unless it were fairly certain that incoming cash flows would be more than sufficient to cover the higher dividend, with room to spare. The last thing they want is to raise it today only to lower back down tomorrow. A dividend hike is a clear vote of confidence for future success.

The firm has downgraded SKT from “Buy” to “Hold,” and has lowered the company’s price target from $40 to $35. This price target suggests an 8% upside from the stock’s current price of $32.22.

Analyst Omotayo Okusanya commented: “We expect near-term headwinds for the mall and outlet mall segment as tenant sales growth appears to be slowing.”

“At SKT, development yields on two projects have also been reduced. Further, rising interest rates negatively impact our DDM-derived PT. Our lowered PT of $35 represents a 10% total return over the next-twelve-months (NTM); we are downgrading to Hold,” added the analyst.

Old National Bancorp (ONB) is a 181-year-old financial institution with 195 branches, mainly in the Midwest. The stock, which is still down by about one-third from its prerecession high, trades at just 13 times projected 2016 earnings and yields an attractive 3.4%. If interest rates ever rise, the bank should benefit from a widening spread between its cost of funds and the interest rates borrowers pay.

It’s a favorite of David Dreman, author of the classic 1980 book Contrarian Investment Strategy. His philosophy: “We believe that the markets are not perfectly efficient.” Some stocks, in other words, are judged by the market to be cheaper than their actual worth.

I’m proud to say I’m now a member of AARP, short for American Association of Retired Persons. For those unfamiliar with AARP, it is an interest-based, non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for the 50-plus population. AARP seeks to fulfill its mission through advocacy, information, and service. You may be wondering then, how and why did I join AARP at 35?

There Is No Age Restriction

For the longest time, I thought you could only join AARP if you were 50 and older, which seemed like a reasonable assumption. Everyone that I knew who talked about or received mail from AARP was 50 and older (e.g., my parents). However, several years ago, I stumbled on a deals forum where people in their twenties and thirties were debating whether joining AARP, to take advantage of the benefits, was worth it. Just like that, I started seeing the world in a whole new light.

Its been a long time since the S&P 500 has had a perfect week. By perfect, we mean five consecutive days stretching from Monday through Friday with the index setting a new record high each day. The last one was recorded in 1998, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst for S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Are we about to break that dry spell? Today, the S&P 500 closed at a fresh record high for the fourth consecutive day, something that hasnt happened since November 2014. Up 11 points, or 0.5%, the benchmark ended at 2,163, spurred on by better-than-expected earnings from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM).

Elsewhere, the DJIA added 134 points, or 0.7%, to 18,506.4, for its third record finish in a row. The Nasdaq, climbed 28 points, or 0.6%, to end at 5,034.06, reaching its highest level for 2016.

Investors shrugged off a surprise decision by the Bank of England to stand pat on interest rates. Meanwhile, J.P. Morgan delivered a strong second quarter earnings report, which lifted the shares 1.5% and pulled other big banks along for the ride. The Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) rose 0.9% to close at %23.56.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

The latest implied forward rate forecast from Kamakura Corporation shows projected 10-year U.S. Treasury yields differing -0.07% to 0.03% from last week while fixed rate mortgage yields varied by -0.01% to 0.08%. Mortgage yields, determined by the Monday through Wednesday weekly survey of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, lag Treasury movements simply because of the 3-day yield calculation used in the Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is projected to rise from 2.92% at Thursday’s close (down 0.06% from last week) to 3.374% (down 0.06% from last week) in one year. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield in ten years is forecast to reach 4.639%, 1 basis point lower than last week. The 15-year fixed rate mortgage rate is forecast to rise from the effective yield of 3.69% on Thursday (down 0.001% from last week) to 4.222% (down 0.006% from last week) in one year and 6.29% in 10 years, up 0.038% from last week. We explain the background for these calculations in the rest of this note, along with some mortgage servicing rights metrics. The forecast allows investors in exchange traded U.S. Treasury funds (TLT) (TBT), total return bond funds (BOND), municipal bonds (NUV) and exchange traded mortgage funds (REM) to assess likely total returns over the next 120 months. President Trump may not have accomplished his top priority of repealing Obamacare in his first 100 days, but he has certainly left his mark on the health reform law.

The Trump administration is not waiting around for Republicans in Congress, who continue to battle internally over legislation to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. The president and his officials have taken several steps that both undermine and strengthen the law.

These mixed messages have left insurers, providers and advocates increasingly jittery over Obamacare’s future. The uncertainty is prompting many insurers to consider withdrawing from the exchanges next year. Several have already pulled out, including Humana (HUM), whose exit is leaving roughly 40,000 people in Tennessee without any coverage option for next year, unless another carrier steps in.

Here’s what Trump has done to Obamacare in his first 100 days:

Issued an executive order to roll back Obamacare: Hours after he was sworn in as president, Trump signed an executive order aimed at weakening Obamacare as much as possible under the law. The order directed agencies to minimize the financial burden of the health law on individuals, insurers, states and others.
