Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Watch For 2018: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

The contract awards are for the jack-ups West Elara and West Linus with ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS (COP) for work in the Greater Ekofisk area. The total additional backlog for the new contract awards is estimated to be about $1.4 billion, excluding performance bonuses.

Spun off from energy producer ConocoPhillips (COP) a few years back, PSX has quickly become one of the downstream industrys biggest players. Refiners earn profits based on the difference between feed stock costs (Think oil and natural gas prices) and the price for refined products such as gasoline, jet fuel and heating oil. Those inputs remain low, and Phillips 66 is minting cash as a result.

  • [By Chris Dier-Scalise]

Among the brands being sold were Alcoa Corporation (NYSE: AA) and Ford Motor Company(NYSE: F), which both paid out dividends in December. The financial and oil sectors also experienced a sell-off to finish 2016. Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE: WFC) and Citigroup Inc (NYSE: C) were net sold as each reached new year-to-date highs and investors unloaded ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) and Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) as their prices normalized with the rise in the price of oil.

Things have improved handily from a year ago in the energy sector. Still, even with a pro-energy White House, things are far from perfect in the oil and gas sector. Now ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) is delivering great news to its shareholders.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Watch For 2018: Nu Skin Enterprises Inc.(NUS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Craig Jones]

Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: NUS) is trading sharply higher on Friday, but options traders are buying puts in the name, said Jon Najarian. Traders were buying the June 50 puts and they paid around 6 percent for them, so they don't see much upside in Nu Skin Enterprises, explained Najarian. He followed the trade and he is planning to hold the position for a month.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Citigroup’s Beth Kite calls Nu Skin Enterprises’ (NUS) earnings and guidance “awfully disappointing.” She explains why:

“Frustrating” Describes 4Q15 & 2016 Guidance:Nu Skin (i) reported 4Q15 EPS of $0.62, 11 cents below consensus and us, and (ii) lowered 2016 EPS guidance, from $3.25-$3.40 to $2.40-$2.60.Nu Skin had three LTO’s in 4Q152 succeeded and 1 failed. The failure had far less to do with the product than with the sales strategy…

Is Guidance Too Conservative or Is It Really This Bad? We get that Me failed to sell well in South Korea with the 12-month cartridge commitment. But given the strength in reps globally, the strength of Youth from its two LTOs in 2H15, and good results from Me when sold in Japan without the 12-month commitment, we wonder if guidance is aggressive to the downside. Indeed, the word “conservative” was said a lot by mgmt on the brief earnings call when describing guidance revisions.

Maintaining Buy: While we now have less confidence in mgmt, from an external perspective, to forecast its results accurately, and from an internal perspective, to course correct quicklyi.e., why didn’t they drop the 12-month plan for Me in South Korea when it so obviously wasn’t workingwe are still confident in Youth & Me. The rep growth in South Asia/Pacific from Youth in 3Q led to better 4Q sales than we’d expected, Youth’s Americas LTO in 4Q drove lc sales up 26% YoY, and Me not only sold through in Japan in 4Q but also drove reps higher. We imagine that investors may have little patience or confidence in Nu Skin for a while, understandably. But the bar seems set fairly low now, so we are cautiously optimistic that Nu Skin can dig itself out of this hole as we go through 2016 and Me & Youth roll out more fully.

Shares of Nu Skin have tumbled 13% to $27.31 at 2:11 p.m. today.

  • [By Scott Rubin]

Stock gainers included Mercadolibre Inc (NASDAQ: MELI), up almost 14 percent, and Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: NUS), which added 12 percent. The positive gains in both stocks were due to strong earnings reports. Shares of Liberty Interactive Group (NASDAQ: QVCA) plunged almost 22 percent on Friday due to disappointing sales growth in its fiscal second quarter. Pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (NYSE: BMY) lost 16 percent after a disappointing study involving its Opdivo drug.

Nu Skin Enterprises (NUS) is a direct selling company, which develops and distributes personal care products and nutritional supplements that are sold under the Nu Skin and Pharmanex brands. This stock closed up 5.4% at $92.96 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 2 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 900,802

    Volume % Change: 85%

From a technical perspective, NUS ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $85 with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of NUS into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $88.20 to $89.69. This move also pushed shares of NUS above the upper-end of its recent range that saw the stock trend between $82 to just above $89.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NUS as long as it’s trending above support at $85 and then once it sustains a move or close above Monday’s high of $93.33 with volume that this near or above 900,802 shares. If we get that move soon, then NUS will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $100 to $105.

Best Safest Stocks To Buy Right Now: Facebook, Inc.(FB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Virendra Singh Chauhan]

Facebook stock hits freshall-time high! Well, that’s a phrase investors have been repeatedly hearing in recent times. Shares of the Menlo Park, California-basedsocial networking giant, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), have gained over 21% in the year to date. And, the bullish run is far from over. Apart from the rapidly growing Instagram and strong mobile ad revenue growth, whichwill help sustain Facebook’s near-term growth, the social networking giant has many more growth drivers waiting under its wings. If you thought the rally in FB stock was over, think again. Here are 3 reasons why Facebook stock will continue to move higher.

  • [By Daniel Sparks]

The change sheds light on the growing cost of Silicon Valley-based talent for tech companies in the Bay Area. Stock-based compensation at companies such as Alphabet and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) have grown consistently in recent years, so much so that the two companies have recently announced share repurchase programs seeming to simply aim at offsetting the dilutive impacts of expected stock-based compensation.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Investors have questioned the relevance of the company’s Snapchat app in a market dominated by messaging services such as Facebook’s (FB) WhatsApp and the business-focused Slack Technologies. Wall Street has also raised questions about its ability to monetize the billions of messages it handles each day.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

Shares of Menlo Park, California-basedFacebook Inc.(NASDAQ:FB)are on a roll in 2017, gaining more than 21% YTD after a lackluster 2016. FB stock is trading near its all-time high of $139.68. FB stock has been driven by multiple factors. At large, the strong bullish rally has been on account of strong revenue growth and higher profits which Facebook registered in 2016.Facebook Inc hadreported 54% growth in revenue for 2016. However, in its Q4 earnings call, the management warned investors that the social media giant could face strong headwinds on the growth front as “ad load” had saturated. But if you go by some latest research, the Menlo Park company is set to increase its grip on the digital ad market. With FB stock near its all-time highs, the question is whether it will continue to move higheror not? Here is another reason why FB stock is a buy, even near its all-time high.

  • [By Virendra Singh Chauhan]

As we had noted in our post-Snap IPO coverage, Wall street isn’t too optimistic on the Snapstory. And, well, the negative Wall Street commentary hasn’t stopped, nor has the tone changed. The most optimistic commentary came from FBN securities analystShelby Seyrafi, who believes that a possible Snapchat acquisition by Facebook provides a floor for Snap stock price. However, we don’t align with that thinking, especially not when Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is going all guns blazing in its war against Snapchat. Yes, it looks like Facebook has a new purpose: to take down Snapchat. This is clear from Facebook’s recent moves, where the company has launched features across its suite of apps, which till a few months ago, were the talking points for Snapchat users.

But Amazon’s ultimate end-goal would likely be turning stores into “centralized distribution centers for groceries” but “we err on the futuristic side given Bezos thinks big.”

    Company Commentary
Kroger Co (NYSE: KR) may be best positioned to counter Amazon’s threat given its own data analytics capabilities. SYSCO Corporation (NYSE: SYY) and US Foods Holding Corp (NYSE: USFD) are likely safe as Amazon won’t move into the foodservice distribution space which is very different from serving individual customers.

Nvidia corporation stock shook off the bad performance from the last week, with a nearly 3% gain in the first trading session of this week. If you are wondering whether or not NVIDIA stock has turned the corner, a recent tweet from NVIDIA bear Andrew Left offers some answers. In late December, Citron’s Andrew Left issued a bearish NVDA call, calling a $90 bottom on the stock. Well, the famed short seller of Valeant (NYSE:VRX) fame, recently disclosed that he had covered its short position on NVIDIA. Given that Citron had originally called for a $90 price target, it appears likely that Citron thinks NVDA stock has bottomed out $10 above its original target.

Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Buy For 2018: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Energy infrastructure companies ONEOK (NYSE:OKE) and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) are both emerging from the energy market downturn as stronger entities. Each made smart acquisitions, with TransCanada buying U.S. gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group, while ONEOK is in the process of gobbling up its MLP,ONEOK Partners (NYSE:OKS). While these deals enhanced the growth profiles of both companies, TransCanada still stands out as the better buy for long-term income investors. Here’s why.

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

Energy stocks were driven by a hefty dose of M&A during the third quarter. And that will drive returns for TransCanada Corporation (TRP) during the next one.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

After a series of setbacks in its attempts to build new oil pipelines, Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) completed a transformation transaction to acquire U.S. natural gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group for $13 billion, which includes the assumption of debt. The key to that deal was that it increased the combined company’s near-term project pipeline to 23 billion Canadian dollars, which supports TransCanada’s ability to increase its dividend by 8% to 10% annually through 2020. After completing that deal, TransCanada made a bid to acquire all of the outstanding units that it did not own of affiliated MLP Columbia Pipeline Partners (NYSE:CPPL) in a transaction valued at $915 million. These acquisitions solidified TransCanada’s natural gas pipeline growth ambitions, enabling it to diversify away from oil pipelines.

In a number of articles recently, following the US recent revival and potential approval of the previously blocked Keystone XL pipeline, a number of estimates have been provided suggesting a pending boom for the US steel industry is on the horizon (and US steel stocks have reacted in kind). In fact, this optimism, we believe, peaked today when a report from one of our competitors was published claiming that, the keystone XL pipeline could increase line pipe demand by 14.7% for 2 years. The problem here, we believe, rests with the facts that: (a) TransCanada (TRP) has already taken, and paid for, the steel to build the Keystone XL pipeline (the steel currently sits in storage facilities in both Regina, Canada and Arkansas, United States), (b) neither US Steel (X; SELL), AK Steel, Steel Dynamics, or Nucor have the ability to make the specialized steel required for the miles of pipe associated with this project, to include both the thickness and pressure requirements, according to this article from Reuters, and (c) assuming some of the pipe does need replacement, this would likely come from international steel makers who are capable of producing the specialized steel (again, as highlighted in this Reuters article).

That includes pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), which already operates a pipeline transporting natural gas from Texas into Mexico, and master limited partnerships (MLPs) Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (NYSE: ETP) and TransCanada Corp. Top Canadian Stocks For 2018: 3M Company(MMM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Time To Favor Optionality: Most macro data are similar to, or better than, when the merger was announced. As a result, the same returns have been obtainable, with significantly less stress, simply through owning 3M (MMM) or a basket of chemical companies that approximate the Dow-DuPont portfolio. Relative to the chemical sector, performance has been average, leverage appears reasonable but near-term FCF less-than compelling partly due to new capacity ramping. With the merger likely to close in the near-term (90% chance, in our view), we believe Dow-DuPont will have an opportunity to show how scale creates optionality. The overhaul at Celanese (CE) over the past few years shows the way.

The Dow lost its grip on the 20,000 mark in the wake of concerns about economic growth and new U.S. immigration policy, and some believe that the broader geopolitical climate could have a negative impact on global commerce that in turn could start affecting multinational corporations’ business prospects. In addition, bad news from some individual companies weighed on the markets, and Transocean (NYSE:RIG), Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD), and New Gold (NYSEMKT:NGD) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

I ran a screen to identify the best-performing stocks from the S&P 500 in January. The top three performers during the month were Alcoa (NYSE:AA), CSX (NASDAQ:CSX), and NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG). Let’s see why they were the big standouts and whether they can keep it going.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

NRG Energy (NRG) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today.

    NRG Energygained 4.5% to $12.85 today, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.2% to 2,262.53.

In a note released on Dec. 15, Morgan Stanley’sStephen Byrd and team summarized the reasoning behind their overweight rating on NRG:

NRG Energy (NRG, Overweight, $21 PT) FCF/Equity yield of ~35% and balanced upside from diversified market exposure, higher PJM capacity prices, fleet optimization, and debt reduction. NRG’s generation plus retail matching strategy is an underappreciated source of value, and provides stable cash flow despite current depressed power prices in Texas.

NRG Energy’s market capitalization rose to $4.1 billion today from $3.8 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $6.4 billion on sales of $15 billion in 2015.

NRG Energy was the Biggest Loser on Nov. 10, and the Hot Stock on Nov. 4.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The gain is particularly striking considering the fact that Endo International dropped 73% in 2016, making it the worst performer in the S&P 500. Endo has been hit hard by concerns over drug pricing that has plagued the entire specialty pharmaceutical sector since Valeant Pharmaceuticals International’s (VRX) pricing strategy came to light last year.

Shares of specialty pharma company Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc(NYSE:VRX)have tanked more than 20% in last two trading sessions, breaching the support from the 50 day SMA, after the Laval,Quebec-based company reported its Q4 and FY 2016 earnings on Tuesday, before the market opened. While the earnings itself were better than expected, the guidance for FY 2017 didn’t go down well with investors and wall street, earning the company multiple price target cuts. Valeant reported an adjusted profit of $1.26 a share against analysts’ estimateof $1.21. This was Valeant’s first beat in a long time. Even on the revenue front, the company reported better than expected results. Initially, the stock gained on the report of an earnings beat. However, once the guidance figures came in, the stock tanked. In our earnings preview of Valeant, we had said that the adjusted EBITDA guidance for 2017 will be the key driver of VRX stock after the earnings.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: Plains All American Pipeline L.P.(PAA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dustin Parrett]

We think Plains All American Pipeline L.P. (NYSE: PAA) is one of the best oil stocks to buy this year. In fact, we see a scenario where PAA stock could jump 20% in 2017.

  • [By Dustin Parrett]

Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE: PAA) controls 4 million barrels of crude oil and natural gas a day.

And with higher oil prices and fewer restrictions leading to more drilling, PAA’s pipelines will be in demand in 2017.

One of the largest projects is the Saddlehorn Pipeline, which Magellan is building with Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA) and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC). Both Plains All American Pipeline and Magellan own 40% of the project, which puts their total investment at $230 million apiece. They expect the project to be fully operational early next year, which is noteworthy given its robust first-year economics. Magellan estimates that it will earn eight times EBITDA on the capital deployed, or roughly $28.8 million in annual EBITDA apiece for Magellan and Plains All American Pipeline on their investment.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: Nu Skin Enterprises Inc.(NUS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Shares of Nu Skin have tumbled 13% to $27.31 at 2:11 p.m. today.

The Canadian beer market, much like the American beer market, is seeing a growth in craft products at the expense of established players. And one of the biggest established beer makers in Canada is Molson Coors Brewing Co (NYSE: TAP), Bereneberg’s Javier Gonzalez Lastra and Matt Reid commented in an initiation note.

Molson is the second biggest beer company in Canada, with a 30-percent market share, but the company’s two key brands, Coors Light and Molson Canadian, account for half of the company’s total sales within the “structurally challenged category of premium light,” the analysts wrote. As a whole, 75 percent of the company’s profits are coming from challenged categories, including economy beer.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy For 2018: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Here’s why.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Energy stocks were driven by a hefty dose of M&A during the third quarter. And that will drive returns for TransCanada Corporation (TRP) during the next one.

That includes pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), which already operates a pipeline transporting natural gas from Texas into Mexico, and master limited partnerships (MLPs) Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (NYSE: ETP) and TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP), the company that has (so far) failed to get U.S. approval for its Keystone Pipeline expansion from Canada’s oil sands across the U.S. border.

Last week Renewable Energy & Power, Inc. (OTC PINK : RBNW ), a diversified corporation with markets in energy-saving technologies of LED lighting, solar and wind energy, announced a large San Francisco Bay Area electronic assembly corporation has approved the installation of 1,275 LED lights for their entire main campus.

This is the third such announcement in as many months by the Las Vegas based company. It got me thinking about what the company does and how LED lighting can impact a business’ bottom line as much as it contributes to reducing emissions and the effects of global warming. But what about LED lights in RBNW’s backyard? How much of the Vegas Strip is LED? Well, it turns out, quite a bit.

Over a year ago three of Nevadas largest casino companies MGM Resorts, Wynn, and Las Vegas Sands announced plans to source renewable energy for their hotels, a move driven both by increasing demand for responsible energy use from the companies that rent their conference halls, and a surplus of cheap power from solar farms in Nevada and California. MGM Resorts had already implemented an ambitious energy conservation effort by replacing 1.3 million light bulbs in its properties with LEDs.

Top 10 Casino Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Staffing 360 Solutions, Inc.(STAF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

You may have to read between the lines, but the clues are there. Like a recent article written for CIO Magazine explains, “approximately 32 percent of IT organizations are willing to offer a 10 percent to 15 percent salary increase to currently employed IT professionals in an effort to attract elite talent.” And in September, shares of TeamLease Services surged on reports that it had acquired a Bangalore-based IT staffing firm. In October, North Carolina-based BlueLine Associates acquired the technology arm of staffing firm BlueStaff just to get deeper into the IT staffing industry.

They’re all microcosms of the same idea… information technology staffing is a huge growth opportunity as the world becomes increasingly digital, and the companies in the industry are in a very sweet spot. If they’ aren’t buyout targets, they’re at least well-positioned for big-time growth.

On the other hand, just because an investor spots a trend/opportunity doesn’t mean it’s easy to invest in. How does one make an “IT staffing trade?”

As it turns out, such a trade isn’t quite as out of reach as it may seem. Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STAF) is an easy, simple and great way to plug into the trend.

Staffing 360 Solutions isn’t a well-known name…. yet. The company as it it is today has only been around for a couple of years now, and it’s only been listed on the NASDAQ exchange for roughly a year. It takes time for a young company to be seasoned and established. But, what a company the market will find once the masses start realizing what STAFis, and what it’s doing.

The definition of a roll-up isn’t one set in stone, though the broad brush strokes paint a clear enough picture. Investopedia describes a roll-up as a merger that occurs when investors – often private equity firms – buy up companies in the same market and meld them together, squeezing some synergies out in the process. Roll-ups combine multiple small companies into some

  • [By Peter Graham]

Small cap staffing stock Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: STAF), which is in the midst of a global buy-and-build strategy through the acquisition of domestic and international staffing organizations with operations in the US and UK, hasannounced thatthe Company and its board of directors have rejected a recent buyout proposal for $1.10 per share by the Jackson Investment Group. The proposal by Jackson Investment Group was received by the Company on Thursday, March 23, 2017 and delivered to the Board on Friday, March 24, 2017.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

It’s almost time for the annual Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STAF) shareholder pow-wow. That is to say, the company’s annual shareholder meeting is scheduled for January 26th of the coming year, in New York City. Though nothing too dramatic is on the voting docket, a handful of items will be decided on by STAF owners.

Staffing 360 Solutions is a fast-growing staffing firm. Its focal point is IT staffing. This small company is smartly and cost-effectively acquiring its way into a size and scale by converting a fragmented and less-effective and less profitable group of similar staffing agencies into a cohesive, more profitable singular unit.

It’s paying off too – the proof has been in the rising revenue tally over the course of the past couple of years… a rise that’s been outpaced by the broad improvement of EBITDA and income (which is the point of a scale-up).

The specific numbers: . All told, Staffing 360 Solutions generated $47.8 million worth of revenue last quarter, turned $8.5 million of it into a gross profit, and turned $1.8 million of that into an EBITDA profit. Those were, respectively, improvements of 33%, 34%, and 184% compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Net income improved too. The net loss of $1.3 million was 27% smaller than the net loss of $1.7 million booked in Q1 of fiscal 2016. Profitability – real profitability – is within reach. STAF simply has to stay on the trajectory it’s on. A couple more acquisitions and a little more organic growth could do the trick.

Late next month, shareholders will have a chance to voice their thoughts on where the company should be going… metaphorically and literally. One of the matter being put to a vote is a change of domicile, from Nevada to Delaware; Delaware generally offers a more business-friendly set of operating and tax rules. Another more important matter to be voted on at the meeting is the authorization of more STAF shares, which have been used in lie

  • [By Matthew Briar]

How does the old saying go? Numbers don’t lie? If that’s the case (and it IS true – numbers don’t lie), then Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STAF) remains in the right spot at the right time, and STAF shareholders have much to look forward to.

Staffing 360 Solutions is a young and enterprising IT staffing firm that, for the record, is getting real big, real fast, by smartly and cost-effectively acquiring its way into a size and scale by converting a fragmented and less-effective (and less profitable) group of information-technology similar staffing agencies into a cohesive, more profitable singular unit.

And a recent batch of data confirms that the company is barking up the right tree, so to speak.

The latest round of numbers that bolster the bullish case for STAF are supplied by industry-research group Staffing Industry Analysts. Per the groups monthly Pulse Survey, in January, demand for IT staffing grew 11% on a year-over-year basis, improving on the 5% growth rate this sliver of the temporary-staffing industry saw in January of 2016. That’s the second-best growth pace among several the SIA monitors. Only demand for allied health workers was stronger.

Of course, the news comes as no real surprise to regular followers of Staffing 360 Solutions, who have seen the company grow into a powerhouse, producing $47.1 million in revenue as of the most recent quarter. That was up 14% on a year-over-year basis, and half of that growth was organic (the other half came from smart acquisitions). Shareholders have seen the company grow from essentially nothing three years ago to what will eventually be a company driving $300 million in annual revenue.

It’s not as if Staffing Industry Analysts are the only group out there saying the IT staffing arena is a red-hot opportunity. Technology research outfit recently opined that by the end of 2017, two-thirds of the CEOs of Global 2000 companies will have digital transformation at the ce

I will get right to it. After describing the reasons behind its meteoric rise and the discussing why this name was one of my top blue chip top picks for 2017, it comes down to performance. Just this morning Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), as well as other large banks, are out with key earnings reports. This matters for the 2017 call and it matters for the share price which has skyrocketed in the last few months. It’s about the performance. Performance not just on the top and bottom lines but also in several key metrics that I follow closely for all major banks. The bank has come a long way from it facing extinction, and it took we the people to keep it alive. Today Bank of America is one of the largest banks in the United States by assets and yes, it has recovered from the Great Recession. Is it firing on all cylinders like it was pre-recession? No, unfortunately it is not, but it is getting there. Can you stick with the name? We need to examine the company’s most recent earnings and key metrics to make that determination.

China has a growing middle class and affluent consumers who have strong aspirational demand for western luxury goods. Last year Chinese tourists spent $183 billionon shopping sprees abroad, a good deal of them for buying luxury goods. According to a report on Mintel.com, 58% of the Chinese consumers have boughtforeign goods from local online eCommerce sites. Alibaba has used this trend to build its TmallGlobal. In the just concluded Singles’ day sale, thousands of foreign brands including Walmart (NYSE:WMT) and Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) had participated. A retaliatory tax increase by China on foreign goods will impact the sale of foreign goods. The sale of foreign brands is expected to produce around $2 billion in incremental revenue by next year. Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Staples gained 9.8% to $9.51 today, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% to 2,360.16.

CFRA’s Efraim Levy doesn’t see a “natural buyer” for Staples but remain Buy rated anyway:

Shares are higher on an unconfirmed WSJ report that SPLS is looking at the possible sale of the company. Our fundamentally valued 12-month target of $11, applies a below historical average P/E of 12.1X our FY 18 EPS estimate, given office industry challenges. Our target has 11% upside, plus a 5.5% yield. We don’t see a natural buyer for a large physical store office supply presence, although an activist/private-equity buyer is a possibility. To make an acquisition worthwhile, a buyer would have to be more aggressive in cost cutting and use of cash flow than SPLS’s existing plan.

Staples’ market capitalization rose to $6.2 billion today from $5.7 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $459 million on sales of $18.2 billion in fiscal 2017.

LLY recently suffered a setback when approval for the company’s new arthritis drug, co-developed with Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ: INCY), faced delays from the FDA. LLY and INCY disagreed with the FDA’s findings in a company press release and are confident the drug will still be approved in the future. Despite the company’s confidence in the drug, LLY stock dropped about 5% in trading the day the news came out. Even with that drop, it’s still up a little over 11% on the year, outperforming the S&P 500 (SPX) and some of its pharma peers: Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MRK), Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ).

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Kudos to Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) and Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) for taking a leap forward in the war against diabetes. The two competitors-turned-partners for one joint venture recently announced the FDA and the European equivalent has accepted an application for permission to sell ertugliflozin and a couple of its derivatives. All the drugs/combos in question are part of the SGLT2 family, which essentially induce the kidneys to filter sugar out of the bloodstream for diabetics whose pancreas isn’t processing that sugar properly.

It’s an interesting approach, though not one without a potential downside. By forcing the kidneys to do something they weren’t meant to do, eventually, could pose new problems.

Cell MedX Corp (OTCMKTS:CMXC) is taking an entirely different approach to the treatment of diabetes. Rather than work around a failing pancreas as Merck and Pfizer have, Cell MedX is aiming to fix what’s broken for diabetics. That is, the company aims to restore a body’s cells that properly process sugar by turning them back “on” again using mild electrical currents.

As much as biologists and the healthcare industry know about the human body, new discoveries are being made all the time regarding our makeup. One of the more recent medical revelations was figuring out animals are not just a collection of chemicals and organic matter, but also electrical impulses. Yes, the human body creates electricity, but more than that, a body can benefit from mild electrical currents, as an electrical charge can put a damaged cell back into its natural, healthy state.

It may seem like a crazy idea at first, but know the FDA has already given the science of electromedicine the nod of approval as a treatment for chronic pain (called the Cefaly, if you’re curious), and some major companies are wading deeper into electromedicine waters.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now: Applied Micro Circuits Corporation(AMCC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Piyush Arora]

AMD, along with other server-grade chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm (NSDQ:QCOM), Cavium (NSDQ:CAVM) and AMCC (NSDQ:AMCC), operates in the remaining minuscule 0.8% of the market. So, each of the aforementioned companies operate with a practically non-existent market share, compared to Intels shipments of course. This also means that these firms (AMD, Qualcomm etc.) have plenty of room to grow. This would be subject to good product releases of course, but at least this way, the law of large numbers isnt working against them.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks For 2018

Think about the games of chess versus checkers.  The checkers player approaches the game in a very straightforward way.  All of the pieces look the same and they all have the same abilities.  It is like the socialist version of chess.  Your arsenal in a chess game is far more diverse, and that advantages those who think more flexibly and think several moves ahead, even when they are making a move right now.

As an investor, you have a choice.  You can approach and execute your strategy like a checkers player or more like a chess player.  That means considering not only the investment environment that exists in the moment, but also having the perspective to realize that a variety of possible changes to that environment will occur in the future.  Here are a few key ones as I see it:

Top 10 High Tech Stocks For 2018: Toro Company (The)(TTC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

In his “Homework” segment, Cramer followed up on a few stocks that had stumped him during earlier shows. He said that he’s taking a pass on Toro (TTC) , a stock that’s just off its highs and trades at a premium to rival Deere & Company (DE) .

  • [By Mitchell Clark]

The Toro Company (NYSE:TTC) is one of my favorite small-caps for medium- to long-term investors. Selling specialized equipment for turf management and other industries, Toro is a proven winner that has provided very consistent growth in sales and earnings over the years.

It’s not the fastest growing small-cap business, but it pays a decent dividend and has a loyal customer base in the golf course and contractor markets.

Toro is now offering sprinkler refit equipment for water-starved jurisdictions like California. This company’s share price performance has been exemplary.
