Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch For 2018

It is no secret that I’ve been a long term fan of Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). But of late, that patience and faith in the model hasn’t worked out as investors have used the big banks as little more than proxies for whether or not they felt the Fed would raise rates. Indeed, BAC has soared and plummeted countless times over the past couple of years based upon Fed commentary or inaction on rates and that has made holding BAC a sometimes painful process. And after the stock traded in a very defined range for right at two years, BAC broke down out of the range and a complete meltdown ensued. However, there is hope; recent price action has me very excited about what’s to come.

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch For 2018: Sanofi(SNY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

The drug is currently in phase 1 of an extensive trial, after which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will pass the vaccine on to French pharmaceutical company Sanofi SA (NYSE ADR: SNY). Sanofi will carry out the vaccine’s phase 2 and phase 3 trials because “of the high risk and high costs involved in advanced vaccine development,” the Army wrote in an April 21 public letter on its website.

What happened with Alnylam Pharmaceuticals this quarter?
All of the biotech’s revenue comes from its partners. The upfront payments are often amortized over many years, so the jump in revenue is nothing to get excited about. The big news during the quarter was the decision to stop development of revusiran after a phase 3 trial in patients with ATTR amyloidosis showed more patients taking revusiran died than those taking placebo. APOLLO, a phase 3 trial testing patisiran in patients with polyneuropathy due to hereditary ATTR amyloidosis, is due to read out in the middle of this year, hopefully leading to a marketing application filed with the FDA by the end of the year. Data presented for its hemophilia and other bleeding disorders drug, fitusiran, were positive, leading partner Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) to exercise its right to co-develop and co-promote fitusiran with Alnylam in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. Sanofi already had commercial rights to the rest of the world. The duo plans to start a phase 3 program for fitusiran in early 2017. The Medicines Company (NASDAQ:MDCO) presented more positive data for their cholesterol-lowering drug inclisiran, which was called ALN-PCSsc before Alnylam out-licensed the drug. The Medicines Company is running a new phase 2 trial in patients with a genetic disease that causes extremely high levels of cholesterol, and plans to start a phase 3 program in the middle of this year.

    What management had to say

The APOLLO results, combined with starting phase 3 trials for fitusiran and inclisiran, puts Alnylam in a good position for years to come. CEO John Maraganore explained: “This potentially positions Alnylam to have a steady flow of phase 3 readouts, and if positive, commercial launches on essentially an annual basis going forward.”

Hopes were high for MannKind (MNKD) when its inhaled insulin Afrezza was approved by the FDA more than two years ago. At the time, Barron’s warned that it was time to dump MannKind’s shares, something that now seems prescient, as its shares have since tumbled 95%. No wonder, as the news since then has been far from good. MannKind found a partner in Sanofi (SNY), only to get dumped in early 2016, and has since been forced to sell property to raise cash. And now MannKind could be on the verge of being delisted from the Nasdaq due to its sub $1 stock price. What now? Piper Jaffray’sJoshua Schimmer and team see a reverse stock split in MannKind’s future:

The deal still needs approval from regulators, but there are fewer potential objections than the attempted tie-up between Aetna and Humana (NYSE: HUM), two insurers. While CVS does manage some drug-benefits plans for employers and insurers through its PBM, the merger wouldn’t create less competition in one particular segment of the industry like the insurance market.

The Wall Street Journal reported that government regulators are pushing back against Anthem’s (ANTM) purchase of Cigna (CI). California, however, seems to have few issues with the proposed combination of Aetna (AET) andHumana (HUM). Leerink’s Ana Gupte explains:

Humana (HUM) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after the Republican Congress put forward a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

    S. MARTIN/AFP/Getty Images

    Humana gained 2.4% to $217.76 today, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.3% to 2,368.38.

Why was Humana the best performing stock in the S&P 500? Beats the heck out of me, since what a final plan will look like is still up in the air. Strategas Research Partners’ Daniel Clifton and team explain:

Handwringing about what this bill achieves or not is at a fevered pitch this morning. Our guess is that the final legislation will look quite different than the original draft as was the case eight years ago when the Democrats released their ACA draft and spent the next 12 months fighting over the details. There is a wide chasm of views between conservative House Republicans and moderate Republican Senators. Support is going to be needed from each group to win passage. The most logical complaint is that this is one entitlement program being replaced with another. But how ironic would it be if the Tea Party, which came to fruition in response to the ACA, actually becomes the barrier to reforming the law. Supporters of the ACA and investors in healthcare service companies will be focused on the number of covered lives. There is no doubt that a reformed Medicaid system (to get costs down) and less generous tax credits will lead to fewer covered lives. How much of a difference will be open to interpretation as policymakers await the CBO score.

Humana’s market capitalization rose to $32.5 billion today from $31.8 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $614 million on sales of $54.4 billion in 2016.

Whirlpool CEO Jeff Fettig blamed the confidence-sapping U.S. election and the plunge in the value of the British pound for the companys disappointing third quarter earnings, and predicted that the appliance-makers woes would be short-lived.

Whirlpool shares fell as much as 13% on Tuesday after the company posted earnings per share of $3.66, versus expectations for $3.86, according to FactSet. The company lowered its full-year core EPS guidance to $14-$14.25 from $14.25-$14.75.

In a market like this, a perceived miss means youre gonna have a reaction, he said in an interview with Barrons after earnings were released. Its usually temporary. I suspect this will be as well. At this level were hugely undervalued.

The companys costs in the U.K. jumped because of the weakness of the currency there since Brexit, which made appliances they imported from other countries more expensive (about 85% of the appliances they sell in U.K. are imported). When Whirlpool adjusted by raising prices in Britain, customers initially balked, Fettig said. The currency drop and demand weakness caused earnings to fall by $40 million sapping about 40 cents per share from profits, he said.

The S&P 500 is celebrating 60 years of existence as an index. Launched on March 4, 1957, it consists of an assortment of stocks belonging to diverse sectors and is considered a bellwether for the U.S. economy.

Some Curious Facts About the S&P 500
The index is weighted by market capitalization, which is price multiplied by outstanding shares of the constituent stocks. In contrast, the Dow Industrials is weighted exclusively by price.
The eligibility criteria for a stock to be included in the S&P 500 Index include a market cap of $5.3 billion, U.S. headquarters, at least half a year since its IPO and four straight quarters of positive reported earnings.
The worst annual performance of the index was in 2008, when it lost 38.5 percent.
Priceline Group Inc (NASDAQ: PCLN) was the first $1000+ member of the S&P 500 Index, having scaled the barrier in 2013.

Even as we weigh in the merits of the broader gauge, let's look at some of the market innovations that can claim to be younger than the S&P 500 index itself.

I say “purposely” because in future conference calls, several analysts — especially Greg Badishkanian of Citigroup (NYSE:C) — tried to figure out what the organic growth rates are by doing some backwards math.

On Thursday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting small cap offshore oil and gas services stock PHI Inc (NASDAQ: PHIIK):

We’re a little bit late to the party here, but that’s ok – there’s still some meat left on the bone, so to speak. Were looking for the stock to continue on to the lower edge of a long-term (and bearish) trading range that should allow it to peel back to at least the lower $12’s. Best Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: FMC Corporation(FMC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

We also want to reiterate our bullish view on the agricultural commodities and the ag-related stocks (e.g., CF Industries Holdings (CF), Mosaic (MOS), Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (POT), FMC (FMC), AGCO, Deere). Following sharp multi-year declines, trends continue to improve.

investing in stock market

So, the bull market is now seven and a half years old, valuations are high, the Federal Reserve wants to raise interest rates and there are uncertainties about the election and growth ahead. Most investors have still been lining up to buy stocks on pullbacks. One day, maybe there will be another serious market correction, or even a bear market.

Investors frequently hear analysts on Wall Street talk about why certain stocks are heading higher. They hear “buy this stock” a lot, but they are often confused and on their own when it comes time to sell a stock. The worst-kept secret on Wall Street is that the analysts have many more Buy ratings than Sell ratings.

24/7 Wall St. reviews dozens of analyst research reports each morning. The goal is to find new investing and trading ideas for our readers.

Some analyst research reports cover stocks to buy, and some reports feature stocks to sell or to avoid. It is this latter category that can freak investors out.

Best China Stocks To Own For 2018

Intro – Tesla Already Winning In China, And It’s Just Starting

With a population of 1.2B and climbing (15% of the worlds total), GDP of $15T (2nd only to the US), and a growth rate of nearly 7%, its no secret China is tour de force in the global economy.

Over the last decade, rapidly growing GDP per capita has created a burgeoning middle class with more and more disposable income to spend. The development of this consumer market has already benefited many US consumer technology companies.

Much like Apple (AAPL) and other American luxury brands, Tesla has gained significant traction in China in a very short period of time. Since launching in the country in 2014, Tesla has been investing heavily in building a network of retail stores, service centers, and superchargers across China. This infrastructure expansion, coupled with Teslas exploding brand equity, has led to resounding success in the Chinese market thus far.

China is becoming an increasingly relevant piece of Teslas business by the quarter. In 2016, China generated over $1B in sales for the company, representing 15% of Teslas overall revenue. In Q1 2017, Tesla reported revenue of $504M in China, representing nearly 25% of overall revenue. Although 2017 numbers have been off to a hot start thanks to a buying frenzy before a tax-credit ended in Hong Kong, we see still expect Tesla will generate $2B in China revenue in 2017.

Best Value Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Investor Seth Klarman sold 93% of his stake in Innoviva (INVA) April 30, days after the company’s shareholders rejected an activist investor’s slate of board nominees that wanted to overhaul employee compensation.

Sarissa Capital, a Greenwich, Connecticut-based hedge fund focused on health care companies, purchased a 2.72% activist stake in Innoviva over the latter half of 2016. The fund’s leader, Alexander Denner, sharpened his activist skills at Carl Icahn’s Icahn Capital, and worked before that for Andreas Halvorsen’s Viking Global.

Seth Klarman is a legendary value investor who founded the Boston-based Baupost Group LLC.

Innoviva’s shares gained 29% for the year through March as Sarissa began to seek changes. The firm accused Innoviva of taking too much compensation for itself and losing focus on shareholders, allotting $14 million, or $1 million each employee per year. The total comes out to more than half of its $25 million per-year operating expenses.

What happened?

The seemingly endless string of acquisitions in the online travel industry (OTA) will soon be one deal longer. Priceline Group (NASDAQ:PCLN) announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire European peer Momondo Group for $550 million in cash.

Momondo Group, headquartered in the U.K. and Denmark, operates the momondo travel portal, which offers hotel booking, flights, and car rentals — similar to Priceline. It also runs the popular Cheapflights.com website.

In its press release trumpeting the acquisition, Priceline quoted its CEO Steve Hafner as saying, “Momondo and Cheapflights have built great products serving loyal users across Europe. We’re looking forward to learning from them and sharing best practices as our brands expand globally.”

The acquisition is subject to approval from the relevant regulators. Priceline expects it to close by the end of this year. Once Momondo Group is absorbed into Priceline, it will become a component of the company’s Kayak brand.

He recommended EOG Resources (EOG) as a favorite in that group.

  • [By Craig Jones]

The stock traded around 15 percent higher since the Presidential election and options traders are betting that it is going to jump additional 8 percent. Traders were buying the February 38 calls on Wednesday for approximately $0.80. Najarian decided to follow the trade and he bought a call spread in CSX. • [By Ben Levisohn]

A strange turn of events has sent shares of CSX (CSX)–and other railroads, including Union Pacific (UNP) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP)–soaring today. It all started when Hunter Harrison announced that he would leave Canadian Pacific ahead of schedule to team up with activist investor for the turnaround of another railway company. That company is thought to be CSX.

    Getty Images

That activist interest, more than anything CSX revealed in its earnings report on Tuesday, was enough to get Morgan Stanley’sRavi Shanker and team to upgrade its share to Equal Weight from Underweight. They explain:

The blue-sky potential is likely to continue with the news today that Mr. E. Hunter Harrison will retire from Canadian Pacific and with the WSJ reporting that he is close to teaming up with an activist investor to target CSX…In the near term, given the potential activist interest, the stock is not likely to trade on fundamentals until a resolution, which drives our upgrade from UW to EW. Our PT goes from $24 to $37 or ~18x our FY18e EPS above the peer group but close to the mid-point of the $56 bull scenario and $24 bear scenario amongst the outcomes outlined above.

Shares of CSX have jumped 18% to$43.55 at 11:35 a.m. today, whileCanadian Pacific Railway has climbed 4% to $151.01, and Union Pacific, which released better-than-expected earnings today, has gained 2.4% to $106.21.

The railroad business has been tough lately, and companies like CSX (NASDAQ:CSX) have had to deal with the ups and downs of the industrial economy and its impact on shipping volume. Coming into Wednesday’s first-quarter financial report, however, CSX investors were excited about the prospects for a resurgence in the railroad’s growth prospects.

CSX (CSX) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after railroad operator was upgraded by BMO Capital Markets following its big activist-inspired move last week.

    CSXgained 3.7% to $45.99 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% to 2,265.20.

BMO’sFadiChamoun andTarunJoshi explain why they upgraded CSX to Outperform from Market Perform:

We are upgrading CSX shares to Outperform from Market Perform and raising our target price to $55 from $38. We see upside to around $80 over the medium term. Our constructive thesis is predicated on Mantle Ridge LP being successful in its effort to install Hunter Harrison as CEO of CSX. We believe that the probability of this occurring is fairly high without going down the road of a bruising proxy battle.

CSX’s market capitalization rose to $43.1 billion today from $41.4 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $2 billion on sales of $11.1 billion in 2016.

best shares to invest in today: Lowe’s Companies Inc.(LOW)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Lowes(LOW) soared on Wednesday after reporting fourth-quarter earnings, making it the best performer in the S&P 500.

    Getty Images

Today the shares are lower, but RBC Capital Markets’Scot Ciccarelli writes that the quarter’s strength supports more gains ahead.

Ciccarelli and his team reiterated an Outperform rating on the stock and raised their price target $7, to $90, writing that the sales trends are positive and the macro backdrop, including a robust housing and construction sector, remains supportive for Lowe’s. They still preferHome Depot(HD), saying it provides more consistent execution, but are upbeat about Lowe’s ability to keep climbing.

Details from their note about Lowe’s upbeat same-store sales:

Lowes monthly comps were very healthy, up 4.7%, 6.3% and 4.2% (Nov-Jan), compared to Home Depots 6.0%, 8.0%, 5.1%. Both comp ticket (+4%) and transaction growth (+1.1%) contributed to the comp after stalling in recent quarters (2Q and 3Q traffic growth were sub-1%). Further, 2-year transaction comps (which we view as the run-rate) improved to ~4.7% in 4Q from 3Qs 3.0% and 2Qs 1.3%. Comps in all regions and nearly all product categories were positive, and the Pro continued to comp above company average. Big-ticket was also strong (+9%), driven by categories such as Appliances, Kitchen and Lawn & Garden.

Lowe’s is down down 0.9% to $80.70 in recent trading, although it’s up 13.5% since the start of the year.

CFRA’sEfraim Levy maintains his Buy rating on Lowe’s:

We increase our 12-month target by $8 to $91, based on 19.6X our FY 18 (Jan.) EPS estimate of $4.65 (up $0.03), near its 3-year average forward P/E and reflecting peer P/E analysis. We set FY 18′s estimate at $5.12. We see greater housing activity and higher values supporting remodeling and construction in FY 18, helping same-store sales to rise 3.5% (after a 4.2% increase in FY 17). LOW posts Jan-Q adjusted EPS of $0.86 vs. $0.59, above the $0.78 Capital IQ consensus estimate. Same-store sales growth of 5.1% in Q4 was more than double the consensus estimate.

Lowe’s market capitalization rose to $70.9 billion today from $64.7 billion yesterday.

Top Low Price Stocks For 2018

Black Friday conjures up dreams of scoring flat-screen TVs, video games, jewelry and winter clothing for super-low prices.

But after the gobble gobble, think about some vroom vroom.

The day after Thanksgiving is the best day to buy a used car, according to iSeeCars.com, which found 33.1% more deals that day than on the average day. No. 2 on the list was Veterans Day (32.5%), followed by Thanksgiving (30.6%), Columbus Day (30.5%) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (29.4%). The worst times to buy a used car are July 4 and Mothers Day, both with about 28% fewer deals.

The website, which aggregates used-car for-sale listings, studied data from 40 million-plus used-car sales from 2013 to 2015.

“What you’re seeing is dealers and car sellers taking advantage of people out shopping,” Phong Ly, CEO of iSeeCars.com, told the Free Press. “They want to buy something. They have a glut of inventory they need to move out. A lot of used cars are being traded in. They have to move those, too. Why not take advantage?”

Top Low Price Stocks For 2018: Nucor Corporation(NUE)

But U.S. Steel is getting killed, as are AK Steel (AKS), Steel Dynamics (STLD) and Nucor (NUE). Can we chalk it up to Paul Ryan’s comments that tax reform could take longer than health care reform, which also seems to be tanking the overall market?

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

No matter how much a commodity company like Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE:CLF) tries, its fate will almost exclusively be in the hands of commodity prices. In the case of this past quarter, Cliffs was dealt a tougher hand as iron ore prices declined again. That may be enough to get some investors to head for the hills, but there were also some very promising signs that the company is setting itself up for a better long-term future.

Top Low Price Stocks For 2018: Discover Financial Services(DFS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We get the bull case.American Express is a blue-chip Dow component with an iconic global brand. It generates >30% returns on tangible, but it is trading well below its historical multiple and has underperformed post the election. Costco is now in the rearview mirror, and the string of negative surprises that have weighed on the stock are now poised to abate and position the company to start surprising positively. With Capital One Financial (COF), Discover Financial Services (DFS), and Synchrony Financial (SYF) all trading near their historical peaks, some have concluded thatAmerican Express is headed back to its historical high above $90. While this thought process may sound logical, we believe it only works in a world where generalists are steering the ship, and view it as highly susceptible to unraveling when negative revisions hit. American Express is not the business it once was, it doesnt have the same earnings power, and, in our view, it doesnt deserve to trade near its historical valuation.

While a new year has been ushered in, it is clear PayPal’s philosophy has not changed. Last week, PayPal entered into another major agreement, this time with credit card issuerDiscover Financial Services (NYSE:DFS).

  • [By JACK HOUGH]

Like CVS, Discover has trounced the broad market over the long term but sold off recently. It’s down more than 15% this year. Costs rose early in the year in part due to one-time expenses related to anti-money-laundering efforts and other regulatory concerns. Analysts predict an offsetting decline in expenses next year. Don’t confuse Discover with a company that’s primarily in the business of running a credit-card network, like Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA). It’s basically a credit-card lender, like Capital One Financial (COF), that runs its own network to gain a competitive advantage.

By saving on network fees, Discover can offer attractive card rewards, including a popular cash-back program. Any card lender can offer cash back, of course, but being too aggressive risks hurting margins. Discover has grown its portfolio of credit-card loans much faster than big banks have in recent years. And it has done so with industry-leading returns on capital. Rising growth could be on the way. Early this year, Discover went on a marketing spree. Last quarter, it reported its best card growth since 2007. Historically, new-card growth and loan growth have been closely correlated. In a November note to investors, Morgan Stanley analyst Cheryl Pate predicted accelerating loan growth within six months. Meanwhile, defaults remain low. Shares sell for less than 10 times projected earnings for the next four quarters, down from 12 times at the end of last year. They could rise 20% on a combination of earnings growth and a valuation rebound. The dividend yield is 2%.
