Singapore's GDP grew at 5.2% year over year in the third quarter of 2017, surpassing the 5.0% expectation of economists. This was the strongest reading since the fourth quarter of 2013. The latest revised figures surpassed the initial reading of 4.6% issued by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

Singapore's economy grew 8.8% sequentially compared with 2.9% in the prior quarter. This was above the initial estimate of 6.3%.

What's Driving Growth?

Given that Singapore's economy is largely trade dependent, improvement in manufacturing sector significantly contributed to GDP growth. Moreover, trade and finance are expected to receive a significant boost from the global recovery. Global economic activity seems to be picking up as the International Monetary Fund estimates 3.6% and 3.7% growth in 2017 and 2018, respectively, compared with 3.2% in 2016.

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they’re in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn’t much different than the real thing.
Banking and managing money isn’t what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking.
That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. (MITK), a San Diego-based technology company, debuted its Mobile Photo Account Opening product at Finovate, a trade show where banking tech products are often unveiled. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. If you have your bank’s app, you can use your smartphone’s camera to take a photo of the front and back of your driver’s license, and presto, your new checking, savings or credit card account is open.

Best High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Meritage Corporation(MTH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jason Hall]

WhenMeritage Homes Corp(NYSE:MTH) last reported earnings to wrap up fiscal 2016, it left investors with reason to be concerned. The company finished the year with strong 15% home-closing revenue growth in the fourth quarter, 19% home-closing revenue growth for the full year, and a 15% jump in earnings per share for the year. Unfortunately, the homebuilder reported that its unit sales, and that its backlog of homes on order, were down from the year-ago period in the fourth quarter — not a positive metric considering the general strength of the new homes market and the company’s success in expanding and growing in recent years.

On April 20, 2017, marijuana enthusiasts will celebrate the national cannabis holiday known as “420.” And with over half of U.S. states having some form of marijuana legalization, there will be a lot of celebrating.

That’s why today, we want to share with Money Morning readers a brief U.S. marijuana history guide.

You see, the origin of cannabis use in the United States is unclear. According to Vice magazine, some believe Christopher Columbus brought cannabis with him to America in 1492.

financial trading: 8point3 Energy Partners LP(CAFD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Leading the charge are two yieldcos — NextEra Energy Partners (NYSE:NEP) and 8point3 Energy Partners (NASDAQ:CAFD) — and utility company AES Corporation (NYSE:AES). Here’s a look at why they’re good dividend stocks to own today.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Don’t look now, but the demise of the solar yieldco industry may have been overstated. In the past six months, NextEra Energy Partners (NYSE:NEP), NRG Yield (NYSE:NYLD), and Pattern Energy Group (NASDAQ:PEGI) have all outperformed the market, and even the maligned 8point3 Energy Partners (NASDAQ:CAFD) has come close.

  • [By Shanthi Rexaline]

Wells Fargo Securities downgraded shares of 8Point3 Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ: CAFD) and lowered its price target on Thursday, citing growth/strategic concerns given future sponsorship uncertainties.

  • [By Jim Swanson]

8Point3 Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ: CAFD), a joint venture formed by First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) and SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR), has significant “veiled risks” due to its high payout ratio, lack of debt controls and lack of growth, Axiom’s Gordon L. Johnson said in a report.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Axiom Capital Management’s Gordon Johnson made a startling comparison this week, saying that yieldco 8point3 Energy Partners (NASDAQ:CAFD) looks a lot like the now bankrupt SunEdison and the recently bailed-out SolarCity. If he’s right and the yieldco is built on unstable ground, it could justify the stock’s drop over the last few months and be a warning for investors.

  • [By Lisa Levin]

8Point3 Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ: CAFD) was down, falling around 9 percent to $12.05. 8point3 Energy reported Q1 earnings of $0.03 per share on revenue of $9.9 million. First Solar announced plans to review alternatives for the sale of interest in 8point3 Energy Partners. Wells Fargo downgraded 8point3 Energy from Outperform to Market Perform.

financial trading: Roper Technologies, Inc.(ROP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.

Roper Technologies Inc (NYSE: ROP) is projected to report its quarterly earnings at $1.46 per share on revenue of $895.87 million.

Perhaps the simplest way to think of ETE is as a company with diversified exposure to energy pipelines, which essentially collect tolls as their corporate users send oil and natural gas all across the country.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Invest In 2018: Suzuki Motor Corporation (SZKMY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Elon has plans for a Gigafactory 3 somewhere in the US unlike the Gigafactory in Europe. If Tesla can get just two Gigafactories built, it will have the batteries at least to produce vehicles at about the same scale as Suzuki (OTCPK:SZKMY) (Suzuki made about 3mm autos in 2015). In fact, Tesla hopes to have the Gigafactory running flat out by 2020, supplying 3X the number of batteries it needs unless it can ramp production into 2020 further. These batteries will be used on the Tesla Power Walls and other power containment devices it has in its pipeline, but it sure seems that Tesla can ramp its auto production past the 500k units per year in 2019 and 2020. At the very least, it will likely have the batteries to do so.

The move can extend lower toward the 50-61.8 percent Fibonacci area ( $18.98 – $17.34 ) as a double three but will remain supported as the stock is still looking for a move higher toward at least $31 to finish 3 waves correcting 2014 cycle. Finally, Reliable Testing Tells the True Ryzen Story

Source: AnandTech

First, let me try to clear up some of the confusion I’ve seen in comments about what I have or have not said about Advanced Micro Devices’ (NASDAQ:AMD) Ryzen. I’ve seen claims that I said that Ryzen wouldn’t be “competitive.”

Actually, since the reveal of Ryzen last August, I’ve been fairly circumspect about not making sweeping generalizations about Zen, now Ryzen, performance. Then I wrote:

Let me first say that I do agree that Summit Ridge is a significant technical accomplishment. Through the leadership of Mark Papermaster, AMD has finally managed to live up to a marketing promise for its products. At its 2015 Investor Day, Papermaster promised to deliver a 40% improvement in “instructions per cycle” (IPC), and Summit Ridge has delivered.

Still, reading between the lines, it’s been clear which names he has liked over the months and years. Lithium Americas (OTCQX:LACDF) and SQM (NYSE:SQM) are prime examples. Consider that LAC shares have more than doubled from an early July low of C$0.78 (it closed at C$1.70 on Sept. 15th) when rumblings suggested that SQM might not move forward on the LAC/SQM Cauchari-Olaroz project. Joe was among the first to squash those rumors, setting up what turned out to be a highly profitable buying opportunity. SQM is up 120% in the past 12 months (by comparison, the Global X Lithium ETF (LIT) is up 54%, and the S&P 500 Index is up 16%).

On Monday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting women’s health stock Juniper Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: JNP):

Juniper Pharmaceuticals shares have yet to break under a key support level at $5.00. But, waiting until that happens may be too late. After some continued testing of that floor, if-and-when the support should break, the ensuing selloff could materialize in a hurry. If you’re not it at the time it happens, you may not be able to get in at a decent price.

candlestick chart: J.M. Smucker Company (The)(SJM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

J.M. Smucker(SJM) is falling Monday, after Morgan Stanley’sMatthew Grainger and his team cut their rating on the stock, citing pricing pressures from Wal-Mart (WMT) and growing competition from private-labels.

    Getty Images

Grainger slash Smucker to Underweight from Equal Weight, and shaved $6 off his price target, to $126. He also cites what he calls “sustained” challenges in both its coffee and pet food business, as well as“below-average strategic optionality.”

At the same time, he also upgraded Pinnacle Foods (PF) to Overweight from Equal Weight, and raised his price target to $63 from $58, on its double-digit earnings growth and what he sees as superior execution.

Nonetheless, he sees many of the packaged food companies in his coverage, from Smucker to Pinnacle, as subject to pressure from Wal-Mart and off-brand rivals. From the note:

Walmart comprises ~22% of sales across our coverage, a figure that has increased in recent years even as the retailers total grocery sales have grown at an even faster 4% CAGR. With Food margins expected to expand meaningfully, we believe this only enhances Walmart’s negotiating leverage going forward. SJM, Dean Foods (DF), and General Mills (GIS) are most at risk in the current environment, in our view.

Recent scanner data points to a positive inflection in private label trends (share up ~30 bps L12W) across a range of center-store categories, a dynamic we believe could intensify in an increasingly competitive retail grocery landscape. Our analysis of recent trends points to the most meaningful underperformance vs. private label at GIS, SJM, ConAgra (CAG), and Campbell Soup (CPB), while only PF has outperformed in recent weeks.

Smucker is down 1.1% to $127.95 this morning, while Pinnacle is up 0.8% to %48.47.

Health savings accounts are poised for a major expansion by Republicans in Washington, D.C., and that could mean millions more customers and fees flowing to a handful of companies.

Investors are betting on it, bidding up shares of HSA provider HealthEquity (HQY) by about 35% since the November election. It’s one of the best performing stocks on Wall Street since Donald Trump won the White House.

Another big beneficiary might be Optum Bank, the industry leader, with more than 3 million of these accounts and about $7 billion in assets it manages for consumers. It’s owned by the nation’s largest health insurer, UnitedHealth Group.

For years, these companies and others have been lobbying lawmakers for changes that could become reality with a Republican-controlled Congress and Trump administration.

The GOP health law replacement plan introduced Monday in the House reflects the party’s broad consensus for giving more Americans access to HSAs, which allow people to put aside money tax-free for medical expenses.
