Shares of auto-part makers like Delphi Automotive (DLPH), BorgWarner (BWA), and Tenneco (TEN) are getting killed today, ostensibly due to an article in Automotive News. Wells Fargo’s Richard Kwas and team think Tesla Motors (TSLA) and its Model 3 deserve at least some of the blame:

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Automotive News article seems to be weighing on supplier stocks with diesel/powertrain exposure. The article indicates that environmentalists could have more influence on long-term EU CO2 targets (expected next year), which could ultimately materially influence both diesel and gas engine penetration in Europe. Also, the article references recent German-based OEM plans to accelerate electrification offerings within their portfolios over the next 10-15 years. On the heels of the article, suppliers with substantial content on diesel and gas powertrains are underperforming the supplier group and the S&P 500 significantly today. In our view, there is little new content in the article. However, we believe the strong reception of Teslas Model 3 coupled with the relative outperformance of certain supplier stocks in the last half of Q1 is contributing to the harsh reaction for some names (BorgWarner andTenneco specifically)…We believe Outperform-ratedDelphi Automotive ($71.36),BorgWarner ($35.55), and Tenneco($46.94) all have mid-teens upside from current levels. We would add/build positions on the weakness.

If you are shopping for a mortgage, you have probably seen all sorts of offers and advertisements aimed at first-time home buyers and wondered if these are really as good as they sound. In some cases, “first-time” programs are little more than attention getting marketing messages from lenders, while in others they are actual assistance programs for people who may otherwise face challenges with qualifying for a home mortgage or finding a home loan at an affordable interest rate. With this in mind, it is important to understand the difference between mortgage lender marketing programs, actual loan programs, and financial assistance programs.

You can be a first-time home buyer more than once

First of all, even if you have previously owned a home, you (or your spouse) may still qualify as a first-time home buyer. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, first-time home buyer status is not limited to people who have never owned a home before (although that criteria obviously applies). For lending purposes, a first-time home buyer includes anyone who fits one or more of these conditions:

CFRA’s Efraim Levy still sees “risks” despite Signet’s defense of itself today:

We lower our 12-month target by $4 to $81, or 11X our FY 18 (Jan.) EPS of $7.35 (reduced $0.30). We apply a P/E below SIG’s 10-year forward average of 13.4X, to reflect challenges of negative same-store sales, offset by our favorable longer-term view of SIG’s market position. SIG today addressed recent headlines, but we still see risks, despite implied upside potential to our target. Posts adjusted Jan-Q EPS of $4.03 vs. $3.63, in line with Capital IQ consensus and January guidance. Same-store sales fell an in-line 4.5%, dragged down by the Sterling Jewelers division.

Signet Jewelers’ market capitalization rose to $4.9 billion today from $4.5 billion yesterday.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Biotech stocks are having a great day today–iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) has climbed 2.5% to $276.92–leading some to suggest that 2017 could be better for investors than 2016 was. Not Baird’s Brian Skorney and Michael Ulz, who “don’t think 2017 will be worse than 2016″ but “aren’t quite sure it will be much better.” They explain why:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Short story is, growth products are slowing and large net price increases are appearing increasingly unsustainable, even if the government doesn’t intervene. The innovation cycle appears to be in a waning period and, so far, large-caps with boatloads of cash seem to be hesitant to act. 2017 should have some excitement. We may finally see a successful registrational study in Alzheimer’s disease (Axovant Sciences’ (AXON) intepirdine or Merck’s (MRK) verubecestat), CAR T will finally get to plead its case, and we may find out once and for all if those ‘transformational’ PCSK9s are just that…

A steadily building pharma cash war chest is a big offsetting tailwind. As Princess Leia would say, “Help me M&A, you’re my only hope.”

Skorney’s namesVertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX),Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT), and Curis (CRIS) his top biotech picks for 2017, while Ulz chosesBioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN) andParatek Pharmaceuticals (PRTK).

Top executives at United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) took home outrageously high compensation last year, even though the parcel carrier missed many of its performance targets, like revenue growth and total shareholder returns.

In fact, UPS said in its March filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) its three-year performance missed targets for revenue growth, operating return on invested capital, and total shareholder returns.

Even worse, the world’s largest package delivery company also missed some of its financial targets for 2016. For example, UPS’s net income fell 29% last year after it struggled to handle the rising costs of e-commerce.

Yet UPS CEO David Abney earned a surprising 21% more in total compensation in 2016 than the prior year, according to the new SEC filings. Abney took in a whopping $13.7 million, including a salary of $1.1 million (a 6.3% increase), stock awards of $10.2 million (a 22% increase), and long-term awards valued at $860,000.

corporate stock: EPR Properties(EPR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate EPR PROPERTIES as a Buy with a ratings score of B. This is driven by a number of strengths, which we believe should have a greater impact than any weaknesses, and should give investors a better performance opportunity than most stocks we cover. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, increase in net income, good cash flow from operations, expanding profit margins and growth in earnings per share. Although the company may harbor some minor weaknesses, we feel they are unlikely to have a significant impact on results.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

EPR PROPERTIES has improved earnings per share by 11.8% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. But, we feel it is poised for EPS growth in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, EPR PROPERTIES reported lower earnings of $2.78 versus $3.13 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($2.91 versus $2.78).

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The company, on the basis of net income growth from the same quarter one year ago, has significantly outperformed against the S&P 500 and exceeded that of the Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) industry average. The net income increased by 17.5% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, going from $42.71 million to $50.20 million.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

EPR’s revenue growth has slightly outpaced the industry average of 6.1%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 9.7%. This growth in revenue appears to have trickled down to the company’s bottom line, improving the earnings per share.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Net operating cash flow has increased to $64.42 million or 19.61% when compared to the same quarter last year. The firm also exceeded the industry average cash flow growth rate of 9.39%.

The gross profit margin for EPR PROPERTIES is currently very high, coming in at 73.12%. Regardless of EPR’s high profit margin, it has managed to decrease from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, EPR’s net profit margin of 46.18% significantly outperformed against the industry.

Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) had a buyer who is a director and a 10% owner of the company adding to holdings. Fairholme Capital acuired another 281,900 shares of the troubled retailer at prices that ranged from $8.33 to $8.82. The total for the buy was set at $3 million. The stock closed last Friday at $9.05. The 52-week range is $5.50 to $19.12, and the consensus price objective is a stunning $4.00.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

This widely acknowledged fact is the biggest factor behind department stores’ recent troubles. Many department-store chains, including Macy’s (NYSE:M), Sears Holdings’ (NASDAQ:SHLD)Sears stores, and J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP) are closing numerous stores this year in an effort to slim down. In a few markets, these store closures may sufficiently rationalize the supply of retail space. But that’s the exception, not the rule.

Liquidity Services Inc. (NASDAQ: LQDT) was raised to Buy from Underperform, and the price target was raised up to $45 from $28.50, at Merrill Lynch.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Liquidity Service (LQDT) is an online auction marketplace for surplus and salvage assets. This stock closed up 14.9% at $34.44 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 1.60 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 402,622

    Volume % Change: 336%

From a technical perspective, LQDT skyrocketed higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $30.94 with strong upside volume. This move briefly saw shares of LQDT trend back above its 200-day moving average at $34.60, before it closed just below that level at $34.44. Shares of LQDT are now quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if LQDT manages to take out Monday’s intraday high of $35.21 and then once it clears some more near-term overhead resistance at $35.71 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LQDT as long as it’s trending above $32.67 or above $31.60 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 402,622 shares. If we get that breakout soon, then LQDT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $38 to $40.90.

The company said that it had $0.68 in earnings per share (EPS) and $233.5 million in revenue, versus consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters called for $0.56 in EPS and $227.61 million in revenue. Smith & Wesson’s (SWHC) stock has been under pressure ever since Donald Trump’s election victory–it appears that the perceived threat to take away guns did wonders for the gun manufacturer’s sales. Now, Smith & Wesson might also have to deal with competitive pressures that could “challenge” its market share, says Wunderlich’s Rommel Dionisio:

    Getty Images

Given the upcoming mid-January Shot Show, the firearms industrys most important annual trade show, several prominent competitors have already begun to unveil new products for 2017. The flurry of major new product introductions from leading players in the field into the two fastest growing categories of firearms, modern sporting rifles (MSRs) and compact/concealed carry handguns, appear meaningfully more competitive than usual, which could challenge Smith & Wessons (SWHC) market share, which had been rising impressively the past several years. Industry sales are also likely to slow, following unusually high growth in 2016. We maintain our price target of $26, derived using an EV/2016E EBITDA multiple of 6.0x.

Shares of Smith & Wesson have dropped 1.5% to $21.78 at 12:07 p.m. today.

Huntington’s problems may not end at the water’s surface, either. While it’s the principal contractor building the Ford-class carriers, Huntington will cooperate with peer shipbuilder General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) to build the new Columbia class of ballistic missile submarines, which will replace the current Ohio class (and up until recently, it was commonly called the “Ohio Replacement Class”).

  • [By Rich Smith]

As details about the Pentagon’s plan have emerged, it’s become clear that this will be a sizable program, amounting to perhaps $1 trillion in spending over 30 years — not just to upgrade the Minuteman missiles, but also to buy new B-21 stealth bombers from Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC)and have General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) and Huntington Ingalls (NYSE:HII) design an entirely new class of ballistic missile submarines (to be known as the “Columbia class.”)

The U.S. Army wants General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) to build it a super-tank — an improvement over the ubiquitous M1 Abrams main battle tank that is currently the mainstay of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps.

Signet Jewelers (SIG) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after the Washington Post broke the news of a class action arbitration suit against the company alleging discrimination against women at the company.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    Signet Jewelersdropped 13% to $63.59 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% to 2,363.64.

The Washington Post broke the news last night, which caused Signet’s stock to tumble more than 8% before it was halted. Signet’s stock continued to fall after it released a statement pointing out that the class action didn’t involve sexual harassment, just whether women were paid less than men or passed over for promotions, as if that should make us feel better. Then it concluded by noting that it had “thoroughly investigated the allegations and have concluded they are not substantiated by the facts and certainly do not reflect our culture.” Because self-investigating always works.

Signet Jewelers’ market capitalization fell to $4.4 billion today from $5.1 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $468 million on sales of $6.6 billion in 2016.

What happened

Shares ofRed Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc.(NASDAQ:RRGB) rose 28% in the March, according to data fromS&P Global Market Intelligence, on the heels of the restaurant chain’s encouraging fiscal fourth-quarter 2017 report in late February.

So what

That’s not to say Red Robin’s quarter looked jaw-droppingly good on the surface. Revenue climbed a modest 1.8% year over year, to $291.5 million, driven entirely by contributions from newer locations. Comparable-restaurant revenue — which includes those restaurants that have operated for at least five full quarters — declined 4.3%. On the bottom line, that translated to adjusted earnings per share of $0.35, down from $0.86 per share in the same year-ago period. By comparison, however, analysts were expecting adjusted earnings of just $0.29 per share on slightly higher revenue of $297 million.

Non-bank ATM operator Cardtronics (NASDAQ:CATM) slumped on Friday despite reporting fourth-quarter results that beat analyst estimates on all fronts. The culprit driving the decline may be the company’s 2017 guidance, which calls for a decline in adjusted EPS. At 2:30 p.m. EST, the stock was down about 10%.

Signet Jewelers (SIG) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after reporting better-than-expected earnings and offering a staunch defense of the company’s culture.

Signet Jewelersgained 8.7% to $70.02 today, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% to 2,364.87.

If you are like most people, when you hear the words estate planning, you probably think of writing a will, to explain who will get what you own when you die. The problem is, a will has little or nothing to do withyou. Its all about planning for someone else. In reality, estate planning is about much more than writing a will; its also about taking care ofyouwhile you are alive, should you become incapacitated and unable to make your own decisions.

When most investors think of diabetes stocks, names like Novo Nordisk A/S (ADR) (NYSE:NVO) and MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ:MNKD) come to mind. And well they should. Novo Nordisk is the biggest insulin company in the world, and while MannKind is relatively small, it’s a name that turns heads simply because it came up with an inhalable insulin that – after a slow start – is getting a little traction.

In both cases though, the paradigm is the same one that was first used decades ago. That is, if a person isn’t making their own insulin, then it must be introduced externally. What if instead a diabetic’s glucose levels could be controlled by turning on the cells in their body responsible for processing that sugar? That’s the approach Cell MedX Corp (OTCMKTS:CMXC) is taking, using a relatively new but very compelling science.

While chemical-based manufactured pharmaceuticals were largely the core of healthcare for well over the past century, it’s become clear that our bodies – right down to our cells – are also electrical in nature. Not only do they produce it, they need it to function properly. The FDA has even recently approved a therapeutic device that delivers mild electrical currents to and through an individual’s body as a means of treating pain. This “electromedicine” has also shown a certain degree of efficacy as a treatment for several illnesses, including cancer. Specifically, electrical currents have been demonstrated to force pleomorphic cancer microbes into hibernation, essentially making a cancerous cell a normal, healthy cell again. So, using an electrical current as a means of therapy for diabetics isn’t far-fetched at all. Indeed, it’s quite brilliant.

As for how Cell MedX is using the idea, it’s actually quite simple. The device is called an eBalance. At first glance it just looks like another ordinary tablet computer. A closer inspection of the e-Balance device, however, makes it clear that it’s not just another tablet. It’
