Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

While the economy’s natural — and recurring — cycles favor different kinds of stocks at different times, not every great trend is necessarily a cyclical one. Sometimes, a trend is rooted in a technological development that changes cultural norms. The advent of the smartphone, for example, has made constant connectivity to the world around part of how we live our daily lives.

These mega-trends present tremendous opportunities for investors too, provided they’re savvy enough to see them coming and play them the right way.

One such mega-trend newly underway right now is the proliferation of wearables… devices that meld clothing (often a wrist-worn device) and technology to perform a function that couldn’t be performed otherwise. Much of the same technology that made the smartphone possible are now ushering in wearables.

It’s not been a smooth beginning. however.

While the buzz was strong and expectations reached a peak two years ago when Fitbit Inc (NYSE:FIT) was all the rage and in the wake of its IPO, the company’s growth wasn’t to be sustained. The company is struggling to muster any growth now, and FIT shares have fallen to a tenth of their value seen in late-2015, when the euphoria was strongest.

Fitbit’s slowdown has been mirrored by other companies in the space. The wearables market only grew 3.1% in Q3 of 2016.

On the flipside, while the debacle of Fitbit — the wearable industry’s iconic company — has been a painful, it’s also been a learning experience. And, it’s not as if the slowdown is unfurling without the wearables market never reaching a respectable size. International Data Corporation estimates were 23 million ‘wearables’ delivered in the third quarter of last year alone.

Moreover, the fizzling of the market hasn’t turned into a reason to swear off wearables as an investment opportunity… quite the opposite, actually. It’s just now become considerably clearer what consumers want an

In a special episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer dedicated the entire show to the art and science of technical analysis, picking the best charts from his weekly “Off the Charts” segment and analyzing even closer.

Why study the charts at all? Cramer said it’s because charts are like the footprints at the scene of the crime, clues to what the big money managers are likely thinking. Additionally, charts have a remarkable self-fulfilling nature because so many professionals abide by them religiously.

While Cramer is still a firm believer in fundamental analysis, analyzing how a company is performing and how its sector fits into his larger world view, he said technical analysis can be a useful tool to confirm a trend or disprove a theory.

For example, if the Dow Jones Industrial Average hits a new high, then historically the Dow Transports index needs to also hit a high for the move to be sustainable. If the transports are heading higher, then the move is legitimate.

Ford Motor Company and My Position

I have been invested in Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) for some time now. I made my fist small investment in F three years ago, and mostly over the last two years I have increased my holding. As can be seen from previous articles I have written, I have been a bull of the company. At the current time I do not consider the stock a buy based upon an appreciation in the stock price, but I do think the stock is a good investment for the dividend. Ford trades at a very low PE ratio of 5.86, and I consider the stock to be low0risk at the current levels, which I will explain later on. The company offers a yield of close to 5%, and that is excluding the special dividend. I have included in the article more on the dividend and special dividend and how Ford has prudently chosen to compensate shareholders.

My Position

Unfortunately I have not always been correct on my bullish thesis. Being wrong has cost me some money over the last couple of years. The first area that hurt my bull thesis is the slow growth that the company has experienced in China. I expected the growth and profitability of the Chinese market to be much better that it has been for Ford. While there has been growth in China, it was not nearly as strong or as profitable as I anticipated. I also thought that the dividend payment would support the stock price from dropping to the levels that it has. There are a lot of yield-hungry investors, and I thought the price of the stock would be supported around the 4% yield range, which would put the stock price at $15 a share (not including the special dividend). Instead the yield currently sits at 4.9%.

SMMYY is a subsidiary of the Sumitomo Group. SMMYY is a major smelter and refiner of copper, nickel and gold in Japan, and has a 27.5% stake in the Ambatovy Nickel Project in Madagascar, along with Sherritt International and Korea Resources Corp. Feedstock for the refinery is nickel cobalt mixed sulphide from its Taganito and Coral Bay mines in the Philippines (noting the Philippines is a risky supply source at this time). Sumitomo supply Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) who supply Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA); however, this can change. Generally, I like the stock; however, at this time, valuation looks full, trading on a 2017 PE of 32.8, and 2018 PE of 14.8. Good to buy after a pullback if that occurs.

During the early stages of a new innovation, interdependent architectures and integrated companies best optimize performance and functionality. This trend has played out in computing and handsets, and we see the same trend playing out in EVs. We find Tesla and BYD1 , by far, the most vertically integrated players in EVs, with huge scale advantages. In addition, LG Chem, Panasonic (PCRFY), Samsung SDI, BYD, and CATL are clear scale leaders in batteries (CATL is not publicly traded. All but Samsung SDI and BYD are not covered by Bernstein.).

A Unilever vs. Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) showdown seems to be something out of an alternative, weird universe. But that’s exactly what has been happening in the Asia-Pacific region, where Unilever is now a major seller of air and water purification devices. The acquisitions of Qinyuan and Pureit water purifiers, as well as the acquisition of Sweden-based Blueair in 2016, reflects Unilever’s latest growth strategy of reducing exposure to low-growth brands in favor of greater investments in higher-growth products with strong social and environmental credentials.

Clean Technica reported on September 1 that “Sony is entering the EV battery manufacturing industry”. And “considering that electric vehicle batteries are going to be the main supply bottleneck for the upcoming auto market’s embrace of EVs, the entry of Sony into the field is very notable. Most of the other manufacturers (Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY), LG Chem (OTC:LGCLF), etc.) already have more or less all of their production capacity locked up for the coming years – meaning there’s not much left for the auto manufacturers that are running behind, thereby limiting potential EV sales for the firms in question. Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) entry into the field should open things up a bit more”. Certainly a good move by Sony and helpful for the EV companies that will find themselves in need of batteries, and limited availability, should EVs reach 10% by 2020.

As increasingly more marijuana growers entered the market and more states allowed residents to legally grow marijuana, cannabis prices dropped throughout 2016. Wholesale marijuana prices late in the year were roughly half the levels of 12 months earlier. Will this trend continue — and possibly hurt leading marijuana stocks including Aphria (NASDAQOTH:APHQF),Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQOTH:ACBFF), Medical Marijuana,Inc.(NASDAQOTH:MJNA), and even GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GWPH) in the process?

This rapid growth in legal pot has create quite the demand for marijuana stocks. The seven largest marijuana stocks by market cap have all put on a show over the past couple of years. Here are those seven “green giants” listed with their market caps as of March 17, 2017, along with their trailing one-year total returns.

    GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GWPH): $3.0 billion, up 64% Canopy Growth Corp. (NASDAQOTH:TWMJF): $904 million, up 259% Aphria (NASDAQOTH:APHQF) $440 million, up 381% Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQOTH:ACBFF): $482 million, up 299% AXIM Biotechnologies (NASDAQOTH:AXIM): $562 million, up 1,720% Corbus Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:CRBP): $450 million, up 431% Medical Marijuana (NASDAQOTH:MJNA): $221 million, up 254%

As you can see, these are some hefty valuations — and some exceptionally strong moves higher on the heels of marijuana’s expansion. With the exception of GW Pharmaceuticals, every one of the largest marijuana stocks has at least tripled in value over the trailing 12 months, with cannabinoid-based drug developer AXIM Biotechnologies skyrocketing more than 1,700%!

When investors think of cannabinoid or marijuana stocks, they either think of better known stocks likeGW Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ: GWPH)and Zynerba Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: ZYNE) that trade on bigger exchanges orCannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) that are stilllisted on the OTC. However, there are other more indirect ways to invest in growing cannabinoid or marijuana acceptance.

Look out Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS:CBIS), and step aside Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS:MJNA). There’s a new cannabis name on the scene…. Algae Dynamics Corp. (OTCMKTS:ADYNF). It may not be known (or named) like its marijuana peers, but give it time. This small cap company has a very big idea, and it’s going to sprout soon.

Yes, Algae Dynamics is an algae company. It’s not just an algae company though.

Algae Dynamics is the owner of the proprietary BioSilo ™ process. BioSilo is a way of growing algae quickly and effectively…. a mix of an open-pond system and a photobioreactor, which is a light-driven approach to growing algae. It can be viewed as a “best of both worlds” approach, lowering the typical cost of algae farming, while the modular design makes it easy to maintain.

The company could go a lot of directions with the technology, Most of the tens of thousands of species of algae are rather flexible in how they can be purposed, and what they can become. Algae Dynamics is first focused on the development of two kinds of products though…. Chlorella, and Omega-3.

Chlorella is a type of microalgae that can be processed into a consumable powder by drying it until it takes a powder form, similar to coffee. Chlorella is rich in minerals, prebiotics, vitamins, and other nutritional substances. It can be added to a baked goods and a number of other products, or taken as a supplement on its own. Chlorella is used in over 1,000 products in the food and beverage markets. Algae Dynamics estimates the global Chlorella market was $210.3 million in 2014 and is expected to reach $265.5 million in 2018.

Despite a market for Chlorella in North America, there are no commercial North American producers of it.

Due to its health benefits, Omega-3 oil can be added to a very wide range of products. Consumers are increasingly aware of these benefits too, leading to substantial growth in the industry; health supplements compr

A long term performance chart shows GW Pharmaceuticals PLC outperforming other marijuana stocks like Zynerba Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: ZYNE), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA), but shares are also once again falling off from all-time highs:

Recommendation #3 Worked Well – I also recommended that you “buy” any marijuana stocks you liked in late December and in anticipation of late December 2016 tax loss selling followed by a January effect increase in price-per-share or recovery. That is the topic of this article. I also had a few stock picks: (1) Cannabix Technologies (OTCPK:BLOZF) is up 10%, (2) Breathtec Biomed (OTCQB:BTHCF) is up 13%, (3) Bayport International (OTCPK:BAYP) is flat, though news might result in an increase by month end – this is a risky one, and (4) Medical Marijuana (OTCPK:MJNA) is up 6%.
