Few industries have packed the potent gains that pot has shown over the past year.

The majority of pot stocks have seen double- and triple-digit increases from their early-year valuations.

The phrase marijuana millionaire is becoming more and more common as people just like you turn small stakes into fortunes.

2017 has been great for pot investors, but 2018 is only going to get better.

Growing public sentiment in favor of continued marijuana legalization, heavy investment from the financial worlds biggest names and new legislation allowing for new markets here and abroad…

It’s a perfect storm for big money in 2018.

A Quick Look Back

2017 was a banner year for the pot industry.

Nevada went fully legal, and to date 29 states now have legalized pot in some form or another.

Medical marijuana and now recreational pot have been huge drivers for this years market success.

Looking at the North American Marijuana Index year-to-date performance, pot plays are up a whopping 57.25%.

Top Medical Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Advance Auto Parts Inc(AAP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lee Samaha]

The key issue to focus on is automotive group comparable sales, which can be seen in the chart below. I’ve also included the most directly applicable sales numbers for its peers,O’Reilly Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:ORLY), AutoZone, Inc (NYSE:AZO) and Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE:AAP). The disappointing sales performance of Advance Auto Parts is largely due to the effects of integrating a troublesome acquisition.

Riot Blockchain Inc (NASDAQ: RIOT) – The Jan. 2015 high of $15.72 is the only resistance it has.
General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) -The low of the move is a double bottom at $17.46 and  $17.50. That’s support.
Overstock.com Inc (NASDAQ: OSTK) – The February 2005 high was $58.24, which is the only relevant resistance up here. On weakness, keep an eye on the all-time closing high of $56.65 made on Monday.
Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE: AAP) – Is trying to fill the gap from earnings between $82.82 and $94.75.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) – It needs to clear Friday’s close of $315.05 and Monday’s high of $315.50 to find support.

Advance Auto Parts (AAP) surged to the top of the S&P 500 today after releasing better-than-expected third-quarter earnings.

Shares of Advance Auto Parts gained 15% to $164.33, while the S&P 500 rose 0.8% to 2,180.39.

Credit Suisse analyst Seth Sigman and team explain why shares of Advance Auto Parts are soaring:

Advance Auto Parts’ Q3 and strategic update was one of the better scenarios for this stock with better than expected comps, positive commentary on Q4, a roughly in line 2017 outlook, and a new sense of direction on how this new management team will narrow the margin gap with peers. Management guided to a 500 bps long-term margin improvement, which wasnt a surprise to investors, and other specifics were still limited. However, timed with Q3/4′s improvement, this should help instill some early confidence in this team. We are adjusting our 2016 and 2017 EPS modestly, to $7.30 (from $7.23) and to $7.65 (from $7.60) respectively.

Advance Auto Parts market capitalization rose to $12.1 billion today from $10.7 billion yesterday.

On Thursday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested small cap green energy stock American DG Energy (NYSEMKT: ADGE) as a long trade:

As for American DG Energy, today’s push above a technical ceiling at $0.34 is telling, though that clue is made more telling when you see the short-term moving average lines have given us key bullish crosses over the course of the past couple of months; the undertow is turning bullish. What you can’t see on the daily chart is that this is the first time in years we’ve seen higher lows logged for ADGE.

Hot Warren Buffett Stocks For 2018

Since 2014 Hershey (NYSE:HSY) has been struggling a lot with its foreign operations. This has been due to the facts that the general business environment has been rather weak in foreign countries where Hershey is operating, that a strong dollar has hurt the sales and especially that the Chinese market has proved to be much more difficult than expected.

One other thing that I am even more worried about is the way the current management at Hershey is using adjusted earnings in its earnings releases. I do not know about the rest of the investors, but at least for me, when management is constantly talking about adjusted earnings instead of actual earnings, it is a warning sign. I can fully understand one-time business costs, such as transactions costs related to a major acquisition. In that type of a situation it is perfectly fine to use adjusted earnings because they give more visibility about the true earnings power of a company. However, when a company starts to constantly categorize regular annual costs as one-time costs, like Hershey is doing with business realignment costs, you should be very worried. In the case of Hershey, I would consider the business realignment costs as regular costs as they have been there for several years. This is a bit like when Warren Buffett is recommending that investors walk away if management is constantly referring to EBIT figures.

Hot Warren Buffett Stocks For 2018: CarMax Inc(KMX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

CarMax, Inc (NYSE: KMX) reported better-than-expected earnings for its fourth quarter.

CarMax reported Q4 earnings of $0.81 per share on revenue of $4.05 billion. Analysts expected earnings of $0.79 per share on revenue of $3.93 billion.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The car-shopping experience is a much-hated process for many shoppers, and auto seller CarMax (NYSE:KMX) has aimed to change that for the better through a combination of broad vehicle selection and no-hassle sales methods. That approach has given many people positive views of the company, and coming into its fiscal fourth-quarter report on Thursday, CarMax investors had hoped that the approach would pay off in higher sales and profits. CarMax saw particular strength in its used-car market during the quarter, and that helped produce positive momentum that it hopes will persist into the coming fiscal year.

  • [By Chris Lange]

And CarMax Inc. (NYSE: KMX) is set to report its quarterly results first thing Friday. Analysts are looking for a profit of $0.94 per share and revenue of $4.25 billion. Shares closed most recently at $68.08, in a 52-week range of $47.50 to $69.92 and with a consensus analyst target of $69.13.

CarMax’s market capitalization rose to $12.6 billion today from $11.9 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $623 million on sales of $15.2 billion in fiscal 2016.

I have noticed that McDonalds (MCD) huge uptrend in the past months has made some investors skeptical about the prospects of an investment in the stock, based on concerns that the huge uptrend may be a result of excessive euphoria triggered by the re-franchising strategy and the bottom-line growth it generates. In this article, I am going to share some thoughts on McDonalds prospects and its current valuation.

Re-franchising Benefits

Lets start with the re-franchising strategy and its benefits. Investors have to be aware that McDonalds decision to turn its owned stores into franchised ones is part of a precise strategy. By selling its restaurants to franchisees, McDonald’s can generate significant cost savings with the double benefit of driving the bottom line and freeing up resources to invest in other growth projects, such as the expansion in underpenetrated emerging markets or investments in new areas such as digital and delivery. This strategy has been implemented for a while, so its nothing new. In three years, McDonald’s has increased the percentage of franchised restaurants from 81% to 91% and according to the management, franchised margins will be around 80% of the company’s total restaurant margin dollars going forward. The company is expected to maintain this strategic approach in the future, as the management has recently declared:

Investors can trade the U.S. Treasury 30-year bond like a stock using the 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) , which is an ETF backed by a basket of U.S. Treasury bonds with maturities of 20 years to 30 years. As a stock-type investment, it never matures, and interest income is converted to periodic dividend payments.

An ETF is a fund that tracks indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. ETFs basically let you trade an entire sector instead of having to pick and choose specific stocks to trade within a sector. ETFs are also a great way for you to hedge against rising interest rates. When it comes to equities, a good ETF to monitor is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE Arca: DIA). For bonds, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE Arca: TLT) is a good way to gauge the bullishness or bearishness of the overall bond market.

On Sunday, Boeing (BA) said it had signed several defense and commercial deals with Saudi Arabia. Trump was referenced in both deal announcements.

SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) is probably the most famous example of a company that’s suffered from animal cruelty allegations. Shares of the theme park operator, backed by Blackstone (BX) , have never recovered from the release of the 2013 documentary Blackfish, which argued that orca captivity is inhumane and dangerous to the human trainers of the orcas. SeaWorld announced in March that it would phase out its orca captivity, breeding and live shows. The company’s remaining whales, most of which were born in captivity, will live out their lives at the parks. The news sent SeaWorld shares soaring 9%, but continued attendance drops forced the company to slash its dividend and invest $175 million in new attractions.

Sanchez Energy’s stock has continued to run higher in 2017 and is up nearly 50% since the start of the year. Fueling that surge is the announcement that the company found an exceptional place to put its liquidity to work. In mid-January, the company unveiled a strategic partnership with a private equity giant, Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX), to acquire Anadarko Petroleum’s (NYSE:APC) Eagle Ford shale assets for $2.3 billion. Under the terms of the deal, Sanchez and Blackstone entered a 50-50 partnership to own the Anadarko assets, which consist of 155,000 net acres that currently produce 67,000 BOE/D and hold more than 4,000 drilling locations that are economic at current prices. Sanchez will finance its share of the deal with cash on hand, a new bank lending arrangement, and a preferred equity issuance to Blackstone’s credit arm.

NCR’s first-quarter results were solid and continued the company’s positive momentum. Sales were up 2% to $1.48 billion, and while that was only a small gain, it was larger than the 1% rise that most investors were expecting. On a GAAP basis, NCR lost money during the quarter, but after excluding impacts from the company’s transaction with Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX), adjusted earnings of $0.56 per share were up by nearly half from year-ago levels and were stronger than the $0.46 per share consensus forecast among those following the stock.

preferred stock: Medtronic plc(MDT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

US sequential acceleration returns to the prior curve and debunks the bear case. Sequential growth in US [transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR,] in 1Q17 was ~12%, more in line with the ~13.5% average growth rate seen in the five quarters leading up to 3Q16. It’s hard to pinpoint the drivers, but we see several dynamics, including: (i) underlying device utilization thus far in 1Q, (ii) faster ramp at new hospitals where one additional TAVR per center is worth $15mn (~65% of the US upside we saw this quarter), and (iii) less acute competitive pressure from Medtronic (MDT) on larger valve sizes. SURTAVI likely played a limited role but management did not rule it out. Guidance implies a more conservative q/q US growth of ~3% for the rest of the year vs the ~12% this quarter, but underlying strength in the quarter is a material shift in US growth and intermediate penetration. As we stated in our preview, we favored the risk reward into the quarter given achievable expectations and the >20 point lag vs Intuitive YTD and would expect significant recovery tomorrow. Momentum likely continues into 2Q17 as signs of improving intermediate risk penetration provide important offsets to increased competition from Boston in early-2018 before mitral takes hold.

Medtronic plc (NYSE: MDT) dropped about 2.6% Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $69.35 after closing Friday at $71.23. The 52-week high is $89.27. Volume of around 8.6 million was about 20% more than the daily average of around 6.2 million shares traded. The company’s stock was downgraded this morning at Morgan Stanley.

I’ve long thought that Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) would be a suitable buyer, as was the subject of unconfirmed rumors last month. However, I could also envision a defense contractor moving in simply because so much of the intellectual property could easily crossover to military applications. Or, even Google X for that matter.

Medical device makers will also be in the price-control crosshairs. If the government can mandate drug prices, the same can be expected for pacemakers, artificial joints and other devices. Companies such as Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) and previously mentioned pharma giant Johnson & Johnson will find themselves adjusting to a new paradigm.

What do you get when you combine a medical device company like Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT) and a mobile communication device like the iPhone from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)? You get a CardioComm Solutions Inc. (OTCMKTS:EKGGF, CVE:EKG), which can turn your smartphone into a high-powered, high-functioning heart-monitoring piece of hardware as potent as anything you’d have access to in the hospital.

Yes, there’s a market for the melding of what Apple and Medtronic — and several other players — do. The healthcare wearable market was worth $5.1 billion in 2015, and now that such technologies are being accepted, its revenues could reach $19 billion by 2020. Meanwhile, the heart-monitoring space happens to be a market worth more than $20 billion per year, and some say it will be worth $26.7 billion by 2020. CardioComm Solutions is nestled nicely between the two of them.

CardioComm Solutions is the name behind a brand of wellness products sold under the HeartCheck monikor. Those devices are small, handheld portable ECG (electrocardiogram) readers that put the power of a doctor’s or hospital’s heart-monitoring hardware in the hands of individuals who can use them just as effectively.

Its flagship products are the HeartCheck ECG Pen, for consumers (available without a prescription), and the HeartCheck ECG monitoring device (available only by prescription) that’s a higher-level technology. More are on the way too. The ECG ‘Card’ is a credit-card sized device that syncs up with — and is powered by — a smartphone in close proximity. Also on the way is the HeartCheck band, which is worn on the wrist. It does a lot that the Fitbit bands do, with the added benefit of being able to produce clinical-grade ECG readouts viewable not just by the user, but by a doctor, clinic, or call center if that user chooses to deliver them remotely using the company’s platform.

Bolstering the value proposition is the fact that all of its wares are — or will be

Gap (GPS) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after the parent company of Old Navy and Banana Republic experienced slowing traffic and offered disappointing guidance.

Gap plunged 17% to $25.61 today, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.2% to 2,181.90.

Deustche Bank’s Paul Trussell explains why Gap’s fourth quarter looks tough:

While 3Q results were in-line with expectations, the reiteration of FY16 EPS guidance of $1.87-$1.92 (vs. the Street at $2.02) was disappointing as it implies EPS of ~$0.35-$0.40 for 4Q, meaningfully below the Street at $0.50. Results for the upcoming quarter are being impacted by the following factors: 1) a deceleration in industry traffic trends November MTD (we are lowering our November comp forecast to -2% from +2%, and vs. October down -1%); 2) an uptick in marketing spending across all the companys brands during the holiday season (GPS does not expect immediate payback); 3) lapping bonus reversals from last year; and 4) pressure on rent and occupancy due to pre-opening costs associated with the companys Time Square flagship locations for Gap and Old Navy (scheduled to open in the 2H17).

When companies raise guidance, or at least when they lift the lower-end of their prior targets, investors usually cheer. But in the case of Lululemon Athletica Inc. Thanksgiving is almost here but the exit of both Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation (NYSE: PPC) and Smithfield Foods (NYSE: SFD) to focus on their chicken or pork businesses (the latter was also acquired by the Chinese) leaves just two big Thanksgiving turkey stocks, Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL) and Seaboard Corporation (NYSEAMEX: SEB), for investors to consider. According to the American Far Bureau, a 16-pound turkey will (on average) come in at a total of $22.74 this year or roughly $1.42 per pound for a decrease of 2 cents per pound or a total of 30 cents per whole turkey, compared to 2015. The price drop may be a transition back to the norm as the significant bird flu outbreak last year hurt the nations supply of both turkey and eggs.

With the new Nintendo Switch console being met with strong demand, the disclosure shouldn’t come as a shocker. It has a rich history of delivering value to shareholders and continues to hold a dominant technological edge over key competitors in crop protection products, seeds, and traits. While little has changed its promising pipeline and portfolio, the pending acquisition throws a wrench in anyone’s plans to start or add to a position. Uncertainty stemming from the merger provides several terrible reasons to buy Monsanto at this time.

Shares of fuel cell pioneer Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) tumbled in Wednesday trading, closing the day down 13.7%.

    So what

As we advised earlier today, Plug’s sell-off can be traced directly back to a downgrade to “sell” by Roth Capital earlier this morning. Roth had three main points to make in its downgrade. First, Plug Power reported “weak” earnings last quarter. Second, while that quarter didn’t include any sales from Plug’s widely touted alliance with Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), once those sales do begin to roll in later this year, Roth believes they will result in “poor quality of revenue, earnings, and gross margins” for Plug.
