Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch For 2018

It is no secret that I’ve been a long term fan of Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). But of late, that patience and faith in the model hasn’t worked out as investors have used the big banks as little more than proxies for whether or not they felt the Fed would raise rates. Indeed, BAC has soared and plummeted countless times over the past couple of years based upon Fed commentary or inaction on rates and that has made holding BAC a sometimes painful process. And after the stock traded in a very defined range for right at two years, BAC broke down out of the range and a complete meltdown ensued. However, there is hope; recent price action has me very excited about what’s to come.

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch For 2018: Sanofi(SNY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

The drug is currently in phase 1 of an extensive trial, after which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will pass the vaccine on to French pharmaceutical company Sanofi SA (NYSE ADR: SNY). Sanofi will carry out the vaccine’s phase 2 and phase 3 trials because “of the high risk and high costs involved in advanced vaccine development,” the Army wrote in an April 21 public letter on its website.

What happened with Alnylam Pharmaceuticals this quarter?
All of the biotech’s revenue comes from its partners. The upfront payments are often amortized over many years, so the jump in revenue is nothing to get excited about. The big news during the quarter was the decision to stop development of revusiran after a phase 3 trial in patients with ATTR amyloidosis showed more patients taking revusiran died than those taking placebo. APOLLO, a phase 3 trial testing patisiran in patients with polyneuropathy due to hereditary ATTR amyloidosis, is due to read out in the middle of this year, hopefully leading to a marketing application filed with the FDA by the end of the year. Data presented for its hemophilia and other bleeding disorders drug, fitusiran, were positive, leading partner Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) to exercise its right to co-develop and co-promote fitusiran with Alnylam in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. Sanofi already had commercial rights to the rest of the world. The duo plans to start a phase 3 program for fitusiran in early 2017. The Medicines Company (NASDAQ:MDCO) presented more positive data for their cholesterol-lowering drug inclisiran, which was called ALN-PCSsc before Alnylam out-licensed the drug. The Medicines Company is running a new phase 2 trial in patients with a genetic disease that causes extremely high levels of cholesterol, and plans to start a phase 3 program in the middle of this year.

    What management had to say

The APOLLO results, combined with starting phase 3 trials for fitusiran and inclisiran, puts Alnylam in a good position for years to come. CEO John Maraganore explained: “This potentially positions Alnylam to have a steady flow of phase 3 readouts, and if positive, commercial launches on essentially an annual basis going forward.”

Hopes were high for MannKind (MNKD) when its inhaled insulin Afrezza was approved by the FDA more than two years ago. At the time, Barron’s warned that it was time to dump MannKind’s shares, something that now seems prescient, as its shares have since tumbled 95%. No wonder, as the news since then has been far from good. MannKind found a partner in Sanofi (SNY), only to get dumped in early 2016, and has since been forced to sell property to raise cash. And now MannKind could be on the verge of being delisted from the Nasdaq due to its sub $1 stock price. What now? Piper Jaffray’sJoshua Schimmer and team see a reverse stock split in MannKind’s future:

The Company has generated over $20M in revenue for the trailing twelve months, and although the Company is expected to continue to lose money for the next few years, any strong clinical data that hits the tape could rocket shares of ONCE overnight, just like we’ve seen with so many others over the years.

Hot Casino Stocks To Watch For 2018

“Formula for success: rise early, work hard, strike oil” – J. Paul Getty

I must confess to feeling kind of lonely at times this year being one of a handful of observers of the casino space, (and at times, the only one,) standing firm on my undiminished faith that Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) valuations were dead wrong. Now, after the Macau Parisian has opened and LVS Q3 results knocked it out of the park I suddenly have lots of company. I’m bemused to see the bandwagon suddenly getting rather crowded.

There’s no room for gloat or vapid vainglory in my gene pool. I’ve had my share of missed calls – but the casino space is my home stamping grounds. But it is fair to point out that many prophets of doom since the 2015 junket crackdown ran for the exits or pooh-poohed my consistent call on SA that LVS was still worth $70 in my view. Others agreed with me but were less bullish on price. We’re not there yet to be certain. But as I have written before, if the trade holds steady at $60 or above, I feel the ramp-up to $70 or possibly higher by Q2 2017 will move into the speed lane.

Hot Casino Stocks To Watch For 2018: Canadian Pacific Railway Limited(CP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

A strange turn of events has sent shares of CSX (CSX)–and other railroads, including Union Pacific (UNP) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP)–soaring today. That company is thought to be CSX.

Today,Coherus BioSciences (CHRS) lost a patent case with AbbVie (ABBV) that would have allowed for a generic version of Humira. Citigroup’s Andrew Baum and Peter Verdult have the details:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

The Patent Trial and Appeal Boardjust announced that CHRSs IPR on the 166 Humira formulation patent was not instituted. We remind investors that Amgens IPR on the same 157 and 158 formulation patents were also not instituted. Any at risk launch on a formulation that potentially infringes 166, 157 or 158 would seem unlikely and carries a high risk thatAbbVie would attain a preliminary injunction. It is not clear whether either company could attempt launch with a formulation that does not infringe the patent estate. We note that Sandoz has uniquely not filed any IPR on any biosimilars. Sandoz has not announced the FDA has accepted their filing for their biosimilar adalimumab…We anticipate that the perceived historic relationship of the immunogenicity of Humira as it relates to dose stretching will form a key debate in the ongoing PTAB case…

Following the decision of the PTAB not to institute CHRS IPR on the 166 Humira formulation patent, we continue to anticipate that first likely launch of biosimilar adalimumab (Humira) in the US will be delayed until 2020, in line with our published forecasts and biosimilar model. We anticipate the open IPR hearings for the 135 dosing patent on Humira (filed by Boehringer and Coherus) to begin in Feb 2017 with the ruling in May. We rateAbbVie a Buy. We continue to prefer BUY rated Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY), Eli Lilly (LLY) among the US names.

Shares of AbbVie have climbed 5.6% to $59.18 at 3:05 p.m. today, while Coherus BioSciences has tumbled 11% to $25.18,Bristol-Myers Squibb has gained 3% to $52.56, andEli Lilly has risen 1.7% to $73.70.

Hot Low Price Stocks To Buy For 2018

Growth versus value investing is one of the major debates in the investment world.  Growth stocks seem to have outperformed their value counterparts over the past few years. But the winning streak of growth investing took a hit this year with value stocks regaining lost glory.

It is currently speculated that value investing will likely continue its winning run in the upcoming years. Hence, adding potential stocks to one’s portfolio might prove to be an ideal option in the current scenario.

Value vs. Growth Investing: Long-Drawn Debate

Value investors seek to invest in stocks that are believed to be trading at a discounted value. Investors look for favorable value ratios including low price-to-earnings (P/E) and price-to-book value (P/B) ratios to identify potential value stocks. While a significant number of these stocks are also expected to come with solid dividend payments, these stocks are also expected to moderate growth prospects.

Hot Low Price Stocks To Buy For 2018: Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Perhaps the largest ETF dedicated to tracking French stocks should be getting more attention. In a year in which ETFs tracking the PIIGS economies are struggling, EWQ has been solid. The France ETF's 2.7 percent year-to-date gain is slightly ahead of the comparable Germany ETF and more than twice as good as the Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK).

  • [By Tom Aspray, Senior Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The US stock market is still leading with the Spyder Trust (SPY) up 18.6%, while the European markets (VGK) are now up close to 10% for the year, as they have gotten a nice boost in the past three weeks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Still, there are instances of limited appetite for diversified Europe ETFs, particularly those with significant U.K. exposure. The Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) hasn't added (or lost) any capital since June 20. That ETF devotes 31.4 percent of its weight to U.K. stocks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Here is a dichotomy. Global small-caps are performing admirably. The WisdomTree Europe SmallCap Dividend Fund (NYSE: DFE) is an example of a Europe ETF that is defying some unfavorable trends. DFE is down 3.5 percent year-to-date. That sounds bad, but it is far better than what investors have been treated to with diversified, large-cap Europe ETFs. The Vanguard Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) and the iShares Europe ETF (NYSE: IEV) are down an average of 5.3 percent this year.

Hot Low Price Stocks To Buy For 2018: Culp, Inc.(CFI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our analysis around past CEO transitions shows that in the absence of an inherited bubble, or milked portfolio, both of which are factually absent here when looking at the numbers, balance sheet matters ((Danaher (DHR)) from Culp (CFI) to Joyce/3M (MMM) from Buckley to Thulin), and here incoming CEO Adamczyk has a bazooka at his disposal, a dramatic differentiator. With these resources, stepping away from the 10% EPS growth target would be unnecessarily conservative, and a major misstep early on, as we see plenty of smart ways to enhance long term growth while at the same time maintaining earnings visibility, the most important determinant of a premium multiple in this sector. Honeywell is our top pick.

good stocks to invest in today

As if there wasn’t already enough pressure.

Reviews for Samsung’s latest, greatest, and hopefully non-exploding Galaxy S8 are starting to hit the web, and there’s universal praise among the tech press. After years of shamelessly copying Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) designs (and getting sued for it), Samsung has truly come up with an innovative and unique design that looks nothing like anything out of Cupertino. Even a longtime Samsung critic like myself has to acknowledge that it’s a pretty great-looking phone, especially when it comes to the display and virtual lack of bezel.

In retrospect, given Apple’s decades-long obsession with rounded corners (dating back at least three decades), it’s kind of curious that the iPhone maker has never made a display with rounded corners, particularly since Apple controls the operating system, too. Apple even once scored a dubious design patent that was literally (only solid lines are covered by the patent, while dashed lines are for illustration) nothing more than a rectangle with rounded corners. Rounded corners are just one aspect that makes the Galaxy S8’s display look so polished and easy on the eyes, and this is becoming a trend among Android OEMs. (webOS had rounded corners, if you even remember what that is.)

good stocks to invest in today: ENERGY TRANSFER PARTNERS(ETP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Craig Jones]

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) has a too high yield, and Cramer thinks that it is a bargain. He added that the problem is in Energy Transfer Partners LP (NYSE: ETP), which is pulling the whole group down.

  • [By Money Morning News Team]

Energy Transfer Partners LP (NYSE: ETP) owns Dakota Access. Its stock has jumped 9% since the executive order was signed.

And these oil-friendly policies are coming to the rest of the industry.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Energy Transfer Partners LP (NYSE: ETP) posted a new 52-week low of $15.25 Wednesday, down about 3.6% after closing at $15.82 on Tuesday. The 52-week high is $26.73. Volume was about 12.5 million, nearly 50% above the daily average of around 7.2 million. The energy transportation firm had no specific news.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

That includes pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), which already operates a pipeline transporting natural gas from Texas into Mexico, and master limited partnerships (MLPs) Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (NYSE: ETP) and TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP), the company that has (so far) failed to get U.S. approval for its Keystone Pipeline expansion from Canada’s oil sands across the U.S. border.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Double digit distribution secure, market underappreciates ETE support. We believe ETP has outlined a clear path to funding needed through YE16, after which ETP should start to realize the benefit of the ~$10bn of projects under construction. The ~$2.2bn drop down to SUN announced at the recent Analyst Day pre-funds nearly 70% of planned 2016 equity needs, with the potential for non-core asset sales and/or IDR waivers on future equity issuance to cover the balance. ETE’s growth depends upon a strong ETP, and we believe ETE will do what it takes to defend ETP.

Clues point to a link between a hacking group connected to North Koreaand the ransomware attacks that have crippled computer systems worldwide, according to two cyber-security firms.

Experts at the global cyber-security firm Symantec found that earlier versions of the ransomware known as WannaCry were found on computers that also bore evidence of the cyber tools used against Sony Pictures Entertainment, as well as banks in Poland and Bangladesh’s central bank attacks that all were linked to North Korea.

Also, a researcher at Googlesingled out an identical code used both in the ransomwareand used by the Lazarus Group, a team of hackers tied to North Korea, noted Symantec.

Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

Top 10 Medical Stocks For 2018: Applied Optoelectronics, Inc.(AAOI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market mounted a last-minute rally to keep its string of winning days alive, as all three major market benchmarks recovered from losses during most of the day to close higher. The performance again showed the complete confidence that investors seem to have in the market’s longer-term future, despite the fact that some believe that stocks have generally risen too quickly and have been hoping for a pullback. Enough investors seem to be waiting for an opportunity to buy that losses have generally been muted and short-lived. Moreover, some good news sent many individual stocks higher, and Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN), RH (NYSE:RH), and Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) were among the top performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

HON is our top pick and a core EE/MI holding. While fundamentals are not best-in-class, we see HON as the best Energy play within the group with overall profit growth continuing to stand out next year, driven by high business quality and ongoing execution around cost and margins. And with ’17 the "inflection" year for revenues and Elster accretion, coupled with plenty of balance sheet optionality, we believe the stock deserves to trade at a premium versus an average discount across a range of metrics, including an adjustment for pension.
