When William Ackman’s Pershing Square took a stake in Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) many analysts noted that it would be difficult to follow the usual activist playbook “refranchising,” or selling the company stores to independent operators. Credit Suisse analysts Jason West and Jordy Winslow still feel that way:

Associated Press

Does franchising make sense for Chipotle?: After the Pershing 13D filing on 9/6, we wrote that we didn’t see a compelling opportunity around leverage and refranchising in the Chipotle turnaround story. Our subsequent analysis further supports this view. We see limited value accretion from franchising under most reasonable scenarios since: 1) Chipotle’s run-rate margins are too high relative to a ~5% royalty rate, and 2) valuation is too high to generate sufficiently accretive buybacks from proceeds/leverage. E.g., we calculate ~$5/sh. of EPS under a 95% franchised + 6x leverage scenario, well below our current 2017E of $10.49. In contrast, the potential earnings accretion from recovery in store volumes is immense (~$17/sh. on reasonable upside case). Each $100k improvement in Chipotle’s system Average Unit Volumes could add ~$1.50/share to ongoing EPS. We look forward to hearing Pershing’s plans to drive higher volumes at the Chipotle business, though our investor conversations suggest most remain skeptical around near-term sales turnaround under Pershing’s watch. Buffett sold a large portion of his stake in Munich Re (HAM:MUV2) in 2015 citing a terrible outlook for the reinsurance business. A year and a half later, it’s clear he would have made continued to profit on the stock if he had held it, but it is unclear how long that will last and whether his vision is still to come true.

The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B) held more than 10% of Munich Re, one of the world’s largest reinsurers with 50 billion euros in revenue, since 2010 and at one point held around 12% of the company. Munich Re’s stock in October 2010 started around $103.65 per share, but Buffett’s annual letter from that year showed that he paid roughly $150 per share for the entire 19,259,600-share holding with a total cost of $2.896 billion.

McDonald’s is bringing back its legendary Dollar Menu … sort of.

The fast food giant is rolling out a new menu that includes $1 items, but unlike the popular Dollar Menu that it tweaked out of existence years ago, this one includes more costly items as well.

The name speaks for itself. The new menu, which McDonald’s plans to roll out on January 4, is called the $1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu as a return to value offerings for its customers.

The fast food chain first introduced the Dollar Menu in the 1990s but started tweaking it to include higher priced items in 2013, when the company was suffering from a sales slump. It called that menu the Dollar Menu & More.

McDonald’s (MCD) profits have increased significantly this year, compared to last year, and its stock price has soared by about a third.

“We built this menu with variety and value firmly in mind,” said Chris Kempczinksi, president of McDonald’s USA, in a statement.

McDonald’s is introducing its $1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu in January 2018.

The new menu will offer $1 items like sausage burritos, McChicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers and soft drinks of any size.

topstockpicks: Shopify Inc.(SHOP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.MONEYSHOW.COM]

Shopify (SHOP) is especially designed for small and medium-sized businesses. It is based in Ottawa, Canada.

I like this stock recommendation because this is a young company that focuses on providing on-line marketing solutions at a reasonable price for small and mid-size companies.

  • [By Brian Stoffel]

There’s an interesting paradox happening right now surrounding Shopify (NYSE:SHOP). The company — which provides a platform for small and medium-sized businesses to establish an e-commerce presence — has been in the cross hairs of protestors, led by the group SumofUs.com, for providing a platform for the far-right news agency Breitbart. And yet, the stock has never been better, advancing over 60% this year in the face of the protests.

  • [By Brian Stoffel]

That’s why Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) is in such a sweet spot. The company provides a platform for small and medium-sized businesses to create an online presence and manage all of the logistics of e-commerce. Even largerplayers like Tesla, Budweiser, and Red Bull count themselves as Shopify customers.

While crude prices stumbled into 2016, they found their footing by mid-year and roared back to life, ending the year up about 42%. Those rising prices lifted most oil stocks. However, a handful of large-cap oil stocks rose above the crowd by outperforming crude’s rally. Those top-tier performers wereContinental Resources (NYSE:CLR), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD), and Cimarex Energy (NYSE:XEC):

U.S. producers hit their peak more than a year ago with production steadily coming down since then due to under-investment. However, the industry has recently started ramping activity back up in an attempt to push back against the natural production decline. For example, leading U.S. driller Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) reduced its rig count from 40 in early 2015 to five by the third quarter of 2016. As a result, Devon Energy’s third-quarter production from retained assets declined 6.9% year over year. However, Devon Energy has started adding back rigs now that oil prices have stabilized above $50 per barrel and it expected to end 2016 running 10 rigs, with plans to run 15 to 20 by the end of this year. These rigs should push its production up by a low- to mid-single-digitrate this year.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The failure of Russia and others to fulfill their obligations are coming at a time when U.S. shale production is starting to ramp back up. Shale producers such as Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD) and Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) have already released growth-focused budgets to capture the benefits of an improving oil market. In Pioneer Natural Resources’ case, it expects to spend $2.8 billion this year to operate 18 drilling rigs in the Permian Basin and restart its drilling program in the Eagle Ford. Those rigs should enable the company to drill enough wells to grow its production by 15% to 18% over last year’s average. Meanwhile, Devon Energy expects to spend between $2 billion to $2.3 billion on drilling this year, which should fuel 13% to 17% oil production growth by the fourth quarter versus last year’s final quarter.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch Right Now

There are countless investing rules, mantras and cliches out there ranging from extremely useful to downright dangerous.

One of the most widely accepted and potentially detrimental to your portfolio is, “Buy low, sell high.”

When taken literally, of course, to make a profit you must sell a stock for more than you paid for it. But the essence of buy low, sell high has become one of the costliest myths on Wall Street.

Investors have been trained to think that “undervalued” stocks have the most upside potential. The problem is that this approach often causes investors to overlook the market’s best-performing stocks in favor of the ones doing the worst. Since underperforming investments usually sport lower valuations, investors tend to think these stocks are the more attractive buys.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Watch Right Now: Panasonic Corporation (PCRFY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

A Unilever vs. Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) showdown seems to be something out of an alternative, weird universe. But that’s exactly what has been happening in the Asia-Pacific region, where Unilever is now a major seller of air and water purification devices. The acquisitions of Qinyuan and Pureit water purifiers, as well as the acquisition of Sweden-based Blueair in 2016, reflects Unilever’s latest growth strategy of reducing exposure to low-growth brands in favor of greater investments in higher-growth products with strong social and environmental credentials.

During the early stages of a new innovation, interdependent architectures and integrated companies best optimize performance and functionality. This trend has played out in computing and handsets, and we see the same trend playing out in EVs. We find Tesla and BYD1 , by far, the most vertically integrated players in EVs, with huge scale advantages. In addition, LG Chem, Panasonic (PCRFY), Samsung SDI, BYD, and CATL are clear scale leaders in batteries (CATL is not publicly traded. All but Samsung SDI and BYD are not covered by Bernstein.).

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Clean Technica reported on September 1 that “Sony is entering the EV battery manufacturing industry”. And “considering that electric vehicle batteries are going to be the main supply bottleneck for the upcoming auto market’s embrace of EVs, the entry of Sony into the field is very notable. Most of the other manufacturers (Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY), LG Chem (OTC:LGCLF), etc.) already have more or less all of their production capacity locked up for the coming years – meaning there’s not much left for the auto manufacturers that are running behind, thereby limiting potential EV sales for the firms in question. Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) entry into the field should open things up a bit more”. Certainly a good move by Sony and helpful for the EV companies that will find themselves in need of batteries, and limited availability, should EVs reach 10% by 2020.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: LinkedIn Corporation(LNKD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Andres Cardenal]

The most powerful investment ideas are the ones that can be easily explained and understood. LinkedIn(LNKD) is an undisputed market leader in remarkably promising areas such as professional networking and online employment opportunities, and this makes the company a top name to buy in 2016 and hold for years to come.

As of the third quarter of 2015, LinkedIn(LNKD) had 396 million registered members around the world, a big increase of 20% versus the same quarter the previous year, and 39,726 corporate solutions customers on the platform, a year-over-year increase of 31%. Individuals and corporations attract each other to LinkedIn in search of opportunities, and this creates a virtuous cycle driving sustainable growth over the long term.

Management is also translating the company’s massive opportunities into rapid revenue growth. Total sales grew 37% to $780 million last quarter, with the acquisition of online learning platform lynda.com representing $41 million of that. LinkedIn’s three growth engines are firing on all cylinders: Talent solutions for corporations grew 46%, while premium subscription sales increased 21%, and online advertising revenue jumped 28%.

LinkedIn(LNKD) is actively investing for growth, so profit margins are hard to predict in the short term. However, the company should be able to combine solid revenue growth and expanding profit margins in the years ahead.

Who is “the market” and how does it “want” to go down? Where’s the commandment that says stocks have to go lower? Who decides that today people who own stocks are by and large going to lose money? And why, of all things, does the market not want to go higher? Didn’t the CEO of the biggest bank, JPMorgan (JPM) , say things are great? Didn’t Wells Fargo (WFC) , after all of that scandal, still show some growth, a sign that it is putting the rough patch behind it? Didn’t Citigroup (C) have its best quarter in years? Wasn’t PNC Financial (PNC) even better, clear triumphs on every single line item? The word “perfect” comes to mind, as in Perfect National Corp. The U.S. Commerce Department backed Boeing in its challenge to Bombardier, recommending an enormous tariff on sales of Bombardier’s C Series jetliner, a major blow to the Canadian plane maker.

The initial ruling by the International Trade Commission, an arm of the Commerce Department, recommends a 219.63% tariff on the delivery of each airliner, according to a person briefed on the ITC’s findings.

Boeing (BA), America’s largest exporter and sole U.S. producer of commercial airliners, is suing Bombardier. At issue is whether Bombardier received financial backing from the Canadian government that allowed the plane maker to stay afloat and sell to Delta for what Boeing alleges were “absurdly low prices.”

“The U.S. values its relationships with Canada, but even our closest allies must play by the rules,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in a statement. “The subsidization of goods by foreign governments is something that the Trump Administration takes very seriously, and we will continue to evaluate and verify the accuracy of this preliminary determination.”

Top 10 Low Price Stocks To Buy Right Now: Pound/Rand(PX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The last twelve months haven’t been kind to Praxair (PX) and Air Products & Chemicals (APD), but UBS analyst John Roberts and team argue that’s about to change, as they upgrade their shares to Buy from Neutral arguing that their earnings can withstand a slowing global economy:

In our view, the two stocks are more alike than different. NTM P/Es are within ~0.5 pts of each other. Both stocks have declined ~20% from their historical highs the largest corrections in 20+ years aside from the financial crisis…

Industrial gas stocks have normally grown through changes in FX, oil & China demand within normal historical ranges. And investor concerns around China forAir Products & Chemicals may still prove much bigger than reality. Nevertheless, the combination of FX & oil sector impacts on Praxair, and FX & China issues for Air Products & Chemicals, have been much larger than previously seen. With oil already down, the dollar already appreciated, & China concerns already heightened we believe forward basis would appear to carry only normal risks (& lower if FX & oil are mean-reverting, which some theories support).

Normal high single digit EPS growth projected for both in 2017 vs 2016: Four large firms serve 70%+ of the global merchant gas market, and price normally contributes ~2% to growth. Customer older captive units being outsourced contributes another 2%. Secular drivers for oxygen include energy savings (i.e. O2 burns more efficiently than air), life sciences (healthcare & microbial processes) nitrogen secular drivers include increasing purity requirements (food freezing & semiconductors). Topline growth ~2x global GDP more normal, with EPS growth ~2x sales growth due to high fixed costs (key variable costs are inexpensive air & power).

Financial crisis demand drop was only a few %, in line with global GDP drop Most chemicals volumes dropped 10%+ (some 40%

Top 10 Low Price Stocks To Buy Right Now: Columbia Sportswear Company(COLM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Looking at recent historical deals, we arrive at a $18-$23 potential deal range. We analyzed transactions that have been announced over the past four years and involved companies catering to a higher income customer. These deals include Southern Tide (acquired by Oxford Industries (OXM)), Joe’s Jeans (acquired by Sequential Brands Group (SQBG)), prAna (acquired by Columbia Sportswear (COLM)), The Jones Group (acquired by Sycamore Partners [private] and Juicy Couture (acquired by Authentic Brands Group [private]). The average EV/EBITDA multiple of these transactions are 12.9x (in line with KATE’s 5-year historical average of 12.1x) and implies a potential deal range of $22-$23. When taking the average of recent (F13-16) deals implies an ~10.5x EV/EBITDA multiple. When applying the ~10.5x multiples to KATE’s trailing EBITDA, we arrive at an $18- $19 potential share price.

Top 10 Low Price Stocks To Buy Right Now: Eli Lilly and Company(LLY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY) saw its shares in free fall on Wednesday, not from the usual rhetoric of politicians or even the election, for that matter, but a late-stage trial failure. As 24/7 Wall St. has said time and again, clinical trials can make or break biotech and pharma companies. In this case Eli Lilly hit new 52-week lows, not seen since 2014 and this will not be a loss that Eli Lilly will easily forget. Effectively, the company announced results from its Phase 3 solanezumab trial in people with mild dementia due to Alzheimers disease (AD).

Bond prices were much lower early in the day, with yields up by nearly 10 basis points. But fixed income has rallied back (reducing the drop by half on the day). Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) , more weakness. Large pharma lower, led by Eli Lilly (LLY) . Old tech lags, with International Business Machines (IBM) , Intel (INTC) , Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Microsoft (MSFT) all lower. Media roughed up a bit (CBS (CBS) and Comcast (CMCSA) ). The Ugly
Gold down another $23 to $1,188 (SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD) down $2.25). Urban Outfitters (URBN) down $5. NOTE: There will be no “Takeaways” today!   Happy Thanksgiving. Position: Long GLD small, SDS large, JCP large; short SPY, CSCO, CAT small, IWM, TLT small.

  • [By Keith Speights]

With this rapidly growing market, there are plenty of opportunities for investors. Zoetis (NYSE:ZTS), Merck (NYSE:MRK), and Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) stand out as the top animal-health companies to buy in 2017. Here’s why.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

That’s why Cramer said he’d use today’s weakness to buy Merck (MRK) , Eli Lilly (LLY) , Pfizer (PFE) and Allergan (AGN) , an Action Alerts PLUS holding.

  • [By Johanna Bennett]

Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) and Biogen (BIIB) are far from the only two drug makers racing to deliver a new treatment for Alzheimers disease. But they are pretty much leading the pack.

The market for an effective therapy that actually slows the progression of the disease would likely generate billions of dollars in annual sales. It is quite literally the drug industrys version of the holy grail.

And according to Barclays analysts Geoff Meacham and Paul Choi, the next few weeks could prove to be one of the most fertile periods in Alzheimers disease research since 2008.

We think the most likely outcome for Lilly’s Phase 3 EXPEDITION 3 (E3) solanezumab trial is the primary cognition (ADAS-Cog14) endpoint is met (just achieving statistical significance with a p-value <0.05) and mixed results on the secondary endpoints including function (ADL), which we believe should be good enough to support a regulatory submission. While aducanumab has a marginally different mechanism of action, we nevertheless expect BIIB shares to trade in sympathy to Lilly.

Implications for Biogen and Merck: The E3 results are likely to result in volatility for Biogen (up 20-30%, down 10-15%) as Alzheimer’s drives both long-term growth and M&A value even though aducanumab works differently from solanezumab.

Aducanumab dose titration data is expected at the CTAD meeting (San Diego, Dec. 9). Merck’s Phase 2/3 EPOCH verubecestat (BACE) trial is scheduled to finish in June 2017 but unlike E3, PET scans/CSF tests for A were not an inclusion criteria. We think Merck shares could move 3% to 5% in either direction in sympathy to E3.

At $76.58, Lillys share price has fallen more than 9% over the past year, while Biogen has climbed more than 9% over the same span.

Top 10 Low Price Stocks To Buy Right Now: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: COG) is rated as a Hold with a new price target of $24. The EPS estimate has been cut from $0.60 to $0.47 for 2017, and the 2018 estimate has been increased from $0.70 to $1.19. Shares closed at $22.36 on Friday in a 52-week range of $19.77 to $25.74. The consensus 12-month price target is $28.72.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy For 2018

Sometimes I discuss stocks which sit out of my comfort zone, simply because they have a few characteristics which could be of interest to any kind of investor but don’t necessarily fit my portfolio. For example a blue chip stock which has features of positive capital gains combined with interesting dividend. In this case I am talking about Accenture (NYSE:ACN). A little bit more than a year ago, I covered this enormous IT consultant on Seeking Alpha.

I concluded that the firm is sometimes made fun of in the internet for its reputation to no surprise, but has excellent financial figures and a solid backlog. I thought based on current figures it would see another positive year in 2016 and the firm did not disappoint:

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy For 2018: Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc.(DNKN)

While theMacys Thanksgiving Day parade sponsored by Macy’s, Inc (NYSE:M) is the most well known corporate sponsoredThanksgiving parade,Dunkin Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:DNKN) and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) also sponsor parades in major USA cities that will help them grab some extra consumer attention and perhaps help the bottom line a bit.

Dunkin’ Brands Group (DNKN) has dropped 3.5% to $54.16 after getting cut to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs.

Morgan Stanley (MS) has risen 1.1% to $42.95 after getting upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank.

While McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) and Dunkin’ Brands’ (NASDAQ: DNKN) Dunkin’ Donuts both now sell premium espresso-based beverages along with other fancy coffee drinks, people don’t view those brands the way they see Starbucks. The Seattle-based coffee chain exists in its own world, where it can sell out of $10 cups of whisky-barrel-aged coffee while it opens more than a thousand Reserve stores selling pricier drinks than its normal, already expensive beverage lineup.

The market is treating Chipotle as if it is an Amazon, Tesla, Apple or Google, when in fact all they do is make burritos. With the money it would cost you to buy Chipotle today @ $14 billion dollars you could buy Wendy’s (WEN), Cheesecake Factory (CAKE), Papa John’s International (PZZA), and Dunkin’ Brands (DNKN). Chipotle would need to generate at least $24 in earnings per share in order to justify the current market cap — they are not even expected to generate half of that next year. Chipotle is expected to report Q1 on April 25 and the market, in my opinion, has already more than priced in good news.

We saw this pattern with 3M (MMM) , one of my favorite stocks, which got crushed, falling from $177 to $173 because of what the headline writers called a weak consumer-products division. Sure, you can pull a line and see an unexpected decline. But declines do not necessarily mean weakness, which, to me, connotes a failure to have the right product and flagging sales. If you go listen to the conference call, you discover that the weakness had to do with a particularly retailer’s troubles. Sure, you could argue, why do we trust this company? I come back and say, you trust them because CEO Inge Thulin has been money in the bank for years and there’s no reason not to trust him.

Who are the likely candidates for the next round of upgrades? Cramer said he’s betting that 3M (MMM) will be in the mix, along with Walmart (WMT) and especially Home Depot (HD) , which should have a strong spring planting season with good comparisons to last year. Investors might also see upgrades on Honeywell (HON) and Nike (NKE) , Cramer suggested.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy For 2018: Snap-On Incorporated(SNA)

    Snap-on (SNA)

Snap-on, which is more than 100 years old, provides hand and power tools for individuals and professionals, including auto-shop tools and auto diagnostic equipment.

  • [By John Divine]

Snap-on Incorporated (SNA) is my choice for the Best Stocks for 2016 competition. At a market cap of $10 billion, I doubt it will double over the next year, as some of the smaller companies in this competition might be able to.

That said, Snap-on, which manufactures and markets hand tools and diagnostic equipment, is a rock-solid company with an attractive valuation and impressive growth. It goes for 22 times earnings, pays a consistent and modest dividend, and has been around since 1920.

As cars get more tech-heavy and complicated, newer tools and better diagnostics will be needed — and that’s SNA’s bread ‘n’ butter.
