Top 10 Value Stocks To Invest In 2018

DryShips (DRYS) finally filed a 6-K after the close on July 25th that provided an update on its equity issuance for the period July 17th to July 25th. This was a break from prior disclosure patterns of providing updates on Fridays after the close or Mondays before the open as discussed in my article titled “Changing Its Disclosure Patterns?” The update on DRYS’ equity issuance was disappointing since the shares issued and the equity raised fell short of my expectations and, judging by the 20% losses in the stock into the late afternoon on July 26th, the market’s also. The following table summarizes the issuance for the period ending July 25th.

DryShips Equity Issuance Analysis Shares O/S July 7th (millions) 5.10 Funding Gap July 14th (millions) $5.56 Dates of Issuance July 17th – July 25th Shares Issued (millions) 14.08 Avg Issuance Price $1.88 July 25th Close $0.96 Shares O/S July 25th (millions) 19.18 Est of Value of Equity Issued $26.49

A close read of the 6-K reveals that most of the 14 million share issuance occurred July 21st through July 25th due to the pendency of the 1 for 7 reverse stock split announced on July 18th with an Effective Date of July 21st. The stock issued during this three day trading period equaled a bit more than 15% of the more than 91 million shares traded. Although this falls within the range of prior issuance percentages, it was a bit surprising that DRYS did not take advantage of the heavy trading volumes and price spikes and drive issuance closer to 20% of the shares traded. This resulted in lower equity proceeds than anticipated.

Regeneron’s dropped 14% during the last three months, the result of a patent suit with Amgen(AMGN) over its anti-cholesterol drug Praluent, which a judge had set it wouldn’t be able to sell in the U.S.Then last night, there was finally good news: Ajudge ordered a stay, which would allow Regeneron to sell Praluent, and resulted in a 2% pop in its shares last night after the market close. But then Regeneron reported earnings, and while profits of $3.04 cents a share metthe Street consensus, Regeneron missed on sales and offered disappointing guidance. That caused Regeneron shares to sink 2.1% in pre-open trading.

what to invest in

All things considered, it’s pretty safe to say the market was underestimating Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM). Or, perhaps it would be more accurate to say investors overestimated the adverse impact hurricanes Harvey and Irma would have on the company’s operations. XOM stock edged even higher in the wake of Friday morning’s third quarter report, extending a rally that’s been building since early September.

Is this the move that will get — and keep — the XOM stock price over the hump? Maybe. In some regards it’s already over the hump, though we’ve seen this before, but to no avail. The good news is that the “what” that will keep Exxon Mobil shares on the bullish side of the fence is on the verge of happening.

what to invest in: Level 3 Communications, Inc.(LVLT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

A rumored merger with CenturyLink (CTL) sent Level 3 Communications (LVLT) soaring to the top of the S&P 500 today.

    Pixabay

Shares of Level 3 Communications climbed 11% to $51.87 today, even as the S&P 500 declined 0.3% to 2,133.04. CenturyLink didn’t perform too badly, either: It gained 9.7% to $31.

  • [By Benzinga News Desk]

On Thursday afternoon, Wall Street Journal reported that CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) was in advanced talks to merge with Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT). Back on July 13, Benzinga Pro reported Level 3 was reviewing strategic alternatives.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

After opening up 0.6% this morning, Level Three Communications (LVLT) jumped as much as 5.9% on reports that it was considering ways to increase shareholder value (nudge nudge, wink wink, know what I mean?). Citigroup’s Michael Rollins and Neth Wiedemann offer their take:

Online news source Benzinga recently tweeted that an industry source has told them Level 3 is “reviewing strategic alternatives to maximize holder value, including outright sale or large buyback”. Level 3 shares are up ~4% today after a ~3% move yesterday and shares are up ~10% over the past week. The company has not responded to the news, nor can we substantiate the speculation.

Level 3 remains our top-pick within our coverage group given its growth, financial flexibility, valuation, and strategic optionality.Level 3 currently trades around ~10x our 2016 OIBDA estimate and ~11x our 2016 discretionary FCF estimate, which we believe is too cheap given its growth profile and deep strategic asset-mix of metro and long-haul fiber.

We believe that Level 3′s extensive enterprise presence could be attractive for a cable player looking to move up-market and accelerate its investment from thesmall- to medium-sized businesses segment into the enterprise market. We also believe that Zayo Group Holdings (ZAYO) may be an attractive acquisition target for a cable company looking to accelerate an enterprise strategy. We also would not dismiss the possibility that Level 3 and Zayo could consider a merger scenario to become a larger competitor for the enterprise market against the incumbents AT&T (T) and Verizon Communications (VZ).

Shares of Level 3 have gained 3.7% to $56.39 at 1:20 p.m. today, while Zayo Group Holdings has risen 1% to $28.78, AT&T has advanced 0.5% to $42.61, and Verizon Communications is up 0.7% to $55.87.

    Alexion Pharmaceuticalsgained 9.5% to $139.18 today, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.1% to 2,269.00.

Morgan Stanley’sMatthew Harrison and team argue that the audit committees report is “lifting a cloud” over Alexion, but they still have their concerns:

Without significant fireworks mgt. has filed the 10-Q lifting a cloud around the details on the potential wrong doing and its impact. While the “pull-in” sales had less than a 1% impact and do not appear pervasive in use as evidenced by the limited amount outside of 4Q15, we do wonder how the increased scrutiny will impact the selling organization and the potential increased conservatism among personnel going forward. We look forward to 2017 guidance and updates to MG filing and 1210 enrollment at the 4Q16 call.

Alexion’s market capitalization rose to $31.2 billion today from $28.5 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $144 million on sales of $2.5 billion in 2015.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN), a drug maker focused on rare diseases, ended Thursday at the top of the list of the best performing stocks in the S&P 500 index.

The shares climbed almost 3.3%, or $3.78, to close at $118.35, compared to the S&P 500, which fell almost 16 points, or 0.7% to end at 2,328.95.

Its been a rough two years for Alexion. Since mid-2015, when the stock traded above $200, shares have tumbled on worries about the durability of its main drug Soliris, political furor over high drug prices, and the abrupt departure of two top executives amid an investigation into sales practices.

The shares are down more than 3% since the start of 2017.

Solaris sales will be a focus next week when Alexion reports first quarter financial results. Earlier today, Barclays reiterated an overweight rating on the stock and a $115 price target, but raised its 2018 and 2019 earnings estimates, arguing that rivals are unlikely to significantly challenge either Solaris or the experimental drug ALXN1210.

…we are increasingly comfortable with the Soliris outlook and now forecast 2021E sales at $4.8B vs. our previous $4.6B, which is +5% ahead of consensus. Weve raised 2017 and 2018 adjusted EPS estimates by $0.05 and $0.10 respectively. Our 5-year revenue CAGR increases by +70 bps to 14.7% while EPS growth has improved by +100 bps to 20.0%, near the top of the peer group.

Earlier this week, Credit Suisse analysts listed Alexion as one of three biotech stocks that will steal the spotlight during earnings season.

Growth-oriented investors should also check out Alexion Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ALXN(link is external)), which falls through the cracks between the massive well-established biotechs, and the small-cap biotechs that are still pre-revenue.

Alexion targets rare and severe diseases, and has built a broad platform of drugs to treat them. Sales growth has never been less than 37% at any point in the past eight years, and 20% to 25% growth appears locked in over coming years as well. Analysts at UBS, who see 30% upside to their $202 price target, believe that a healthy drug pipeline provides multiple catalysts this year in the form of clinical trial updates. They suggest that shares would be worth $230 in a buyout scenario.

The deal still needs approval from regulators, but there are fewer potential objections than the attempted tie-up between Aetna and Humana (NYSE: HUM), two insurers. While CVS does manage some drug-benefits plans for employers and insurers through its PBM, the merger wouldn’t create less competition in one particular segment of the industry like the insurance market.

Hot Gold Stocks For 2018: Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc.(DNKN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Keurigs plight (actually, JABs) is worsening, with the K-cup market slowing to almost no growth now, and Keurig continuing to lose own brands share. Starbucks (SBUX) echoed the notion of a K-cup market slowdown at its seminar on Wednesday (and is guiding for its [consumer packaged goods, or CPG,] growth below recent trends), but it expects to increase its share of total CPG coffee to 20% from 15%. Come early February it will be a year since the closing of the Keurig deal for JAB Holdings. The pressure on JAB is more significant if we take into account the high leverage of the deal (JAB contributed one fourth of the $12Bn price tag). It is a tough predicament. On the one hand we argue that to make that deal work, they need to buy more (own) brands either from the retail channel (that can be extended to CPG: Dunkin (DNKN)? Panera (PNRA)?), or outright buy CPG brands (like the entire Kraft Heinz portfolio, and or Tata Groups Eight OClock brand). But can/how do they fund these deals? Maybe Mars and Warren Buffett (Mars is involved in office coffee with Starbucks), private equity, and or 3G can help? While this note is not about Positive-rated Mondelez, we have mentioned before a scenario where Kraft Heinz buys Mondelez and partly funds the deal by selling its own CPG coffee business (~$3Bn we say) to JAB as well as divests the Mondelez 20% plus stakes in Keurig (North America) and Jacobs Douwe Egberts (Western Europe), which together at this stage are worth ~$7-8Bn. Dunkin’ Brands Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:DNKN) is currently testing a concept in 300 U.S. stores that may surprise many of its investors: a streamlined menu.

While McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) and Dunkin’ Brands’ (NASDAQ: DNKN) Dunkin’ Donuts both now sell premium espresso-based beverages along with other fancy coffee drinks, people don’t view those brands the way they see Starbucks. The Seattle-based coffee chain exists in its own world, where it can sell out of $10 cups of whisky-barrel-aged coffee while it opens more than a thousand Reserve stores selling pricier drinks than its normal, already expensive beverage lineup.

“Mors tua, vita mea” (literally “your death is my life) probably was the motto that gladiators, in the ancient Rome, recited before entering in the Coliseum and fighting for their life. Over and above its literal translation, this Latin expression means that what is a damage for one person is often an advantage for another. There can only be one winner in a competition; that is the reason why we can apply it to biotech companies like Merck (NYSE:MRK) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY), which are both fighting to gain the lead into immunotherapy market.

In this column, I will introduce these two companies, whose destinies are intertwined and, as Bristol-Myers Squibb is an undervalued stock with great upside potential, I will explain why it could be a good investment. Despite sales could be at risk in 2017, although is not a sure thing, I think it could be worth buying Bristol-Myers Squibb’s shares now.

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Watch For 2018: Spirit Airlines Inc.(SAVE)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Yesterday, shares of United Continental (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL) got pummeled after Delta Air Lines (DAL) offered disappointing guidance. Today, airline stocks are getting smacked again, this time after Credit Suisse Julie Yates and Parker Kim cut their ratings on American and United Continental, while stating a preference for airlines like Southwest Airlines (LUV) and Spirit Airlines (SAVE) that have low exposure to international air travel. They explain why:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

There were 67 times this happened, the first coming in June 2011 (airlines didnt guide to margins before that), and 66 of these instances came from Delta, United, andAmerican (the 67th wasSpirit Airlines (SAVE)). As we said earlier the most short term alpha, +5.3%, was generated over the subsequent four days by being long airlines into a guidance update where an airline would merely affirm a PRASM guide but raise the margin guide. This only happened four times and obviously was a result of airlines holding some semblance of price as costs declined.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Given YTD performance, everything looks cheap. But we remain selective. Ex-Spirit Airlines (SAVE), our entire coverage universe is down year-to-date, with most names also underperforming the S&P 500. Multiples have compressed, with diminishing differentiation between (for example) those with declining leverage (Delta) vs. those where leverage is on the rise (America). In a vacuum, a Buy could potentially be argued for any individual name. Based on estimated risk and upside potential, Delta and Southwest are our top two picks.

PVH (PVH) slipped to the bottom of the S&P 500 today as consumer discretionary stocks fell.

    Getty Images

Shares of PVH dropped 5.1% to $102.45 today, while the S&P 500 finished little changed at 2,191.95. The S&P 500 Consumer Discretionary Sector index fell 0.6%

PVH reported better-than-expected earnings on Nov. 30, but offered disappointing guidance. In a note released on Dec. 1, Wunderlich analyst Eric Bederkept the faith with the stock:

We are reiterating our Buy rating, $125 price target and FY18 EPS and raising our FY17 EPS to $6.75 (From $6.63) after PVH Corp. (PVH) once again handily beat conservative guidance for 3Q, driven by market share gains in the domestic wholesale business and strong international growth, and provided what we view as conservative guidance for 4Q. We believe the company has continued to make strides in driving solid upside despite material FX and related tourist traffic issues. Further, we believe PVH, with Tommy Hilfiger womens domestic business shifting to a licensed model, should drive further margin upside. We continue to view PVH as a key winner in the apparel segment and believe the company continues to have numerous levers to drive bottom line upside.

PVH’s market capitalization fell to $8.2 billion today, from $8.7 billion yesterday.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

PVH (PVH) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after its earnings topped the Street consensus.

    Getty Images

PVHgained 8.5% to $98.55, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.1% to 2,345.96. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) rose 0.8% to $41.21 as it bounced back from losses earlier this week.

Wunderlich’s Eric Beder claims there’s a “worldwide power grab at PVH.” He explains:

We are reiterating our Buy rating and $125 price target and raising our FY18 and FY19 EPS projections after PVH Corp. (PVH) handily registered top and bottom line upside for 4QFY17, driven by international upside at both Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. Despite continued FX-driven weakness, the international operations registered solid top and bottom line growth, as the company’s fashion brands continue to resonate and take market share. We believe that with strong international results remaining in force into 1Q, PVH is once again positioned to drive solid upside to guidance. Further, we believe the company has continued to take share in the domestic markets. We view PVH as one of the best positioned plays in our universe and reiterate our Buy rating on PVH.

PVH’s market capitalization rose to $7.8 billion today from $7.2 billion yesterday.

Cliches aside, Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) might not be the most popular name after its phony accounts scandal, but so what? Its still a quality business with a quality stock that yields 3.4%.

In the next two weeks, several major financial institutions report earnings. Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE: WFC), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM), and Citigroup Inc (NYSE: C) report before market open on April 13. According to consensus third-party analyst estimates, WFC is expected to report $0.96 earnings per share, or EPS, on revenue of $22.16 billion, JPM is expected to report $1.51 EPS on revenue of $24.57 billion, and C is expected to report $1.27 EPS on revenue of $17.97 billion. One area of focus when banks report is the impact of rising interest rates on these company’s net interest income—the difference between revenues generated by a bank’s assets and the expenses associated with paying its liabilities.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

I think that for the longest time we had a basic reluctance to pay more than tangible book value for almost any bank other than Action Alerts PLUS charity portfolio holding Wells Fargo (WFC) . Now, that’s the one bank we have a reluctance to do so–even though we are–and the rest are trading above book. Bank of America is now $3 above tangible book, after spending years in the wilderness. It’s almost as if the gating factor that had held these stocks back has vanished and investors want these stocks as growth stocks not value plays.

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

This jump primarily had to do with Berkshire’s stake in Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC), which rose 5.4% on Nov. 9 alone. This spike in the embattled bank’s shares added $1.7 billion to Buffett’s fortune in the span of 24 hours.
