Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018

The British are leaving, the British are leaving…and that was enough to sink stocks this week.

Getty Images

The S&P 500 dropped 0.7% this week after declining 0.3% to 2,153.74 today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.4% this week after slipping 28.01 points, or 0.2%, to 18,240.49 today. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4% this week after dropping 0.3% to5,292.40 today.

What did the British do? First, Prime Minister Theresa May said that the U.K. will invoke Article 50 to leave the European Union by March 2017. Citigroup’s Christian Schulz and team consider the impact of what’s being called a “hard Brexit”:

Just as UK economic sentiment is recovering from the initial shock of the vote to leave the EU, the tone and announcements at the Conservative Party conference (CPC) risk shaking that resilience again. The clear message from the new PM has been about the priority of national identity considerations and containing immigration, plus more economic intervention. Theresa Mays commitment to trigger the exit process by invoking Article 50 TEU dashes any hopes that the Brexit process would be delayed or even overturned by parliament or the UKs nations. The additional commitment to insist on new immigration controls and the explicit ruling out of the Norwegian and Swiss models of EU relations raise the risk that the UK could exit the Single Market and all other relations with the EU abruptly in spring 2019. Customs Union exit should not come as a surprise but completes the set of disruptive policies, as does the commitment to crack down on perceived corporate misbehavior. The only hope, as far as we can see, is that the potentially large economic and political damage of such an outcome will force the UK and the EU to avoid it or that they will at least draw out the process by agreeing to a bridge model with some Single Market access to follow the Article 50 TEU period. However, with the risk of hard Brexit now firmly on the map, preparations for the worst case will have to intensify on both sides of the English Channel, and the economic consequences are likely to be felt more on its northern shore.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2018: Staples, Inc.(SPLS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Shares of Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) got a boost, shooting up 7 percent to $9.25 on chatter that the company is targeted for an acquisition. Sycamore Partners, a private equity giant, is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire the office supply retailer, Reuters reported. The deal could value Staples at more than $6 billion, a premium to Staples' valuation of $5.60 billion as of Wednesday's market close.

The company was set to merge with its last remaining rival, Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS), this year, but was denied by a federal judge on May 10 because of antitrust concerns.

Staples (SPLS) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today on reports that the office-supplies retailer was considering selling itself.

Staples gained 9.8% to $9.51 today, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% to 2,360.16.

CFRA’s Efraim Levy doesn’t see a “natural buyer” for Staples but remain Buy rated anyway:

Shares are higher on an unconfirmed WSJ report that SPLS is looking at the possible sale of the company. Our fundamentally valued 12-month target of $11, applies a below historical average P/E of 12.1X our FY 18 EPS estimate, given office industry challenges. Our target has 11% upside, plus a 5.5% yield. We don’t see a natural buyer for a large physical store office supply presence, although an activist/private-equity buyer is a possibility. To make an acquisition worthwhile, a buyer would have to be more aggressive in cost cutting and use of cash flow than SPLS’s existing plan.

Staples’ market capitalization rose to $6.2 billion today from $5.7 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $459 million on sales of $18.2 billion in fiscal 2017.

Staples said it would earn from 15 cents to 18 cents in the first quarter of 2017, while analysts had been predicting 17 cents. MKM Partners Megan McGrath liked the quarter, although shes still on the sidelines with regard to the stock:

Lennarreported an earnings beat yesterday, meeting or beating almost all key metric estimates. The stock traded flat vs. a flat S&P 500. Although in-line with our estimates, we believe that the gross margin guidance (down 50-100 bps next year) may have disappointed some investors. Homebuilding guidance was generally in-line with our estimates while guidance for the company’s ancillary businesses was better than our forecast. As a result, we are raising our FY17 EPS estimate to $4.13 from $4.01 and we are now more in-line with consensus. We maintain our Neutral ratingon the company given medium and longer-term concerns over rising mortgage rates and uncertainty over policy issues that could impact major financial decisions for potential buyers next year.

Lennar is down 1.2% at recent check, and has lost 12% this year.

We initiated Lennar (NYSE:LEN) in October, and thus wrote up our comments in our prior shareholder letter, but due to the shift in our letter cadence, we are republishing our thoughts from our initial purchase.

Marty Whitman said in October 1996: “Given Third Avenue’s investment criteria, it is more accurate to view the situation as the industry selecting the Fund, rather than Third Avenue choosing the industries in which to invest’ We think this quote superbly describes the opportunity the Value Fund saw in establishing a position in Lennar Corporation common in the quarter, as the shares sold off somewhat inexplicably from nearly $50 per share at their recent peak and allowed us to establish a position at just over $41.

We have followed Lennar for years as the Real Estate team reviewed the position at our weekly research meetings, and think the investment case has only improved on a fundamental level despite the widening valuation discount in the shares. Lennar meets every tenant of our investment philosophy.

The balance sheet is strong and improving. Homebuilding net debt to total capital has fallen to 33% as of FY4Q16. Much of this improvement is the result of management’s soft pivot land strategy, which is reducing the duration of its owned land bank and converting its undervalued balance sheet assets into cash.

From a compounding point of view, Lennar continues to build value through developing its land bank into saleable housing units, and by monetizing further transaction values through its mortgage origination and title insurance offerings to its home buyers. Notably, we are pleased and supportive of Lennar’s offer to acquire WCIC Communities (WCIC), a top holding of the Third Avenue Small-Cap Value Fund, as Miami-based Lennar knows WCIC’s 100% based Florida assets intimately. Lennar not only sees compelling opportunities to monetize WCIC’s over 14,000 homesites, but also synergy opportunities from management and supplier over

  • [By Rich Smith]

Shares of fuel cell pioneer Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) tumbled in Wednesday trading, closing the day down 13.7%.

    So what

As we advised earlier today, Plug’s sell-off can be traced directly back to a downgrade to “sell” by Roth Capital earlier this morning. Roth had three main points to make in its downgrade. First, Plug Power reported “weak” earnings last quarter. Second, while that quarter didn’t include any sales from Plug’s widely touted alliance with Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), once those sales do begin to roll in later this year, Roth believes they will result in “poor quality of revenue, earnings, and gross margins” for Plug.

  • [By Kumar Abhishek]

Shares of Plug Power Inc(NASDAQ:PLUG) have gained more than 65% since its earnings release on 9th March. Plug Power Inc’s share price plunged more than 10% on 9th March following a disappointing earnings announcement. For FY2016, Plug Power Inc had posted a net loss of $57.3 million on revenues of $85 million. However, the stock has made a smart comeback since then. Plug Power technical analysis charts show that the stock has breezed past its 50-day and 100-day simple moving averages (SMA) and is currently approaching the 200-day SMA resistance line.

Hot Performing Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Aurora Cannabis Inc. (ACBFF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

This article is for those who are hopeful of the long-term view and want to get in ahead of time. This article will compare the three front-runners of the Canadian cannabis industry, Canopy Growth Corp. (OTCPK:TWMJF), Aphria (NYSE:APH), and Aurora (OTCQX:ACBFF). Although these companies will soon have to prove themselves in a new environment, there is plenty to study right now. We will be comparing revenue growth, production capacity, valuations, and then making financial projections. The result will be a recommendation of Aurora followed by Canopy. Again this article is meant to compare competitors. The industry has the potential to be a 22.6B industry but the thesis for investing in Canadian cannabis is a separate topic and I encourage you to consider the risks.

As increasingly more marijuana growers entered the market and more states allowed residents to legally grow marijuana, cannabis prices dropped throughout 2016. Wholesale marijuana prices late in the year were roughly half the levels of 12 months earlier. Will this trend continue — and possibly hurt leading marijuana stocks including Aphria (NASDAQOTH:APHQF),Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQOTH:ACBFF), Medical Marijuana,Inc.(NASDAQOTH:MJNA), and even GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GWPH) in the process?

  • [By Sean Williams]

This rapid growth in legal pot has create quite the demand for marijuana stocks. The seven largest marijuana stocks by market cap have all put on a show over the past couple of years. Here are those seven “green giants” listed with their market caps as of March 17, 2017, along with their trailing one-year total returns.

    GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GWPH): $3.0 billion, up 64% Canopy Growth Corp. (NASDAQOTH:TWMJF): $904 million, up 259% Aphria (NASDAQOTH:APHQF) $440 million, up 381% Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQOTH:ACBFF): $482 million, up 299% AXIM Biotechnologies (NASDAQOTH:AXIM): $562 million, up 1,720% Corbus Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:CRBP): $450 million, up 431% Medical Marijuana (NASDAQOTH:MJNA): $221 million, up 254%

As you can see, these are some hefty valuations — and some exceptionally strong moves higher on the heels of marijuana’s expansion. With the exception of GW Pharmaceuticals, every one of the largest marijuana stocks has at least tripled in value over the trailing 12 months, with cannabinoid-based drug developer AXIM Biotechnologies skyrocketing more than 1,700%!

There are lots of stories like that out there these days. People were perplexed about the Illinois Tool Works (ITW) and Cummins Engine (CMI) and Caterpillar (CAT) quarters, but they turned out to be classic buying opportunities after years of being sell opportunities if the stocks had run. I can’t explain to you how amazing that is. Here are three stocks that have spent months and months in purgatory when they have missed or guided down or slashed forecasts. Now they are up gigantically.

Most of the hardware required for autonomous vehicles already exists. Tiny cameras, radar systems, GPS modules, and computer processors are all off-the-shelf technology. Currently available LiDAR (laser sensor) systems are still expensive, but lower-cost systems that will be practical for mass-market vehicles are in development. Chipmakers, includingNVIDIA(NASDAQ:NVDA) andIntel(NASDAQ:INTC), are working on specialized processors for autonomous vehicles — a potentially huge market for both.

While AMD shares settled down the following day, with a modest uptick of 1 cent a share, the calm didn’t last too long. Goldman Sachs analyst Toshiya Hari initiated coverage of AMD with a sell rating. What’s more, the analyst cited competition from Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA)and assigned the stock a $11 target price, implying a downside of 22% from its previous closing price of $14.17. AMD stock crashed to close the day way lower, falling by more than 6.3% in just that trading session alone. AMD stock has been one of the tech multibaggers in the last year, and so, it’s not surprising to see such sharp corrections. The question is, has AMD stock bottomed out yet?

Is a bottom in sight for Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) stock?

The sell-off inalternative energy technology company Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) doesn’t seem to stop after its Q3 earnings release last week. Plug Power stock dropped another 5.8% yesterday and has lost more than 25% of its value after the earnings announcement. The Latham, New York-based company delivered a non-GAAP earnings loss of 4 cents, which was in-line with the analyst estimates on revenue of $61.43 million, bettering the expectations by $5.64 million. The revised full-year adjusted gross margin falling below the company’s previous guidance of 8% to 12% also had not gone down well with the investors partially contributing to the sell-off. Now, if one take’s a look at the PLUG stock technical chart, they would be rather disappointed as the downtrend is likely to continue for some time now going by the technical set up.

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Own Right Now: Matador Resources Company(MTDR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

The other producing lithium miners, and soon to be producers. I have discussed these previously in detail here, here and here. Needless to say, the top 3 producers are non-pure plays (SQM (NYSE:SQM), Albemarle (NYSE:ALB), and FMC Corp. (NYSE:FMC)). The top pure play currently producing miners are Orocobre (ASX:ORE) (OTCPK:OROCF), Tianqi Lithium (SHE:002466), Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium, Galaxy Resources, Mineral Resources [ASX:MIN] (OTC:MALRF), and Neometals [ASX:NMT] (OTC:RRSSF). The near-term producers include Altura Mining [ASX:AJM] (OTCPK:ALTAF), Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) (OTC:PILBF), Kidman Resources (ASX:KDR), Critical Elements, Nemaska Lithium (OTCQX:NMKEF) [TSX:NMX], Lithium Americas (OTCQX:LACDF) [TSX:LAC], Lithium X (OTCQX:LIXXF) (TSXV:LIX), Neo Lithium, and Bacanora Minerals (OTC:BCRMF) [TSXV:BCN], Advantage Lithium (OTCQB:AVLIF) [AAL], European Metals (OTCPK:MNTCF, ASX:EMH, AIM:EMH) and Pure Energy (OTCQB:PEMIF) [PE].

Still, reading between the lines, it’s been clear which names he has liked over the months and years. Lithium Americas (OTCQX:LACDF) and SQM (NYSE:SQM) are prime examples. Consider that LAC shares have more than doubled from an early July low of C$0.78 (it closed at C$1.70 on Sept. 15th) when rumblings suggested that SQM might not move forward on the LAC/SQM Cauchari-Olaroz project. Joe was among the first to squash those rumors, setting up what turned out to be a highly profitable buying opportunity. SQM is up 120% in the past 12 months (by comparison, the Global X Lithium ETF (LIT) is up 54%, and the S&P 500 Index is up 16%).

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Own Right Now: Sanofi(SNY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Hopes were high for MannKind (MNKD) when its inhaled insulin Afrezza was approved by the FDA more than two years ago. At the time, Barron’s warned that it was time to dump MannKind’s shares, something that now seems prescient, as its shares have since tumbled 95%. No wonder, as the news since then has been far from good. MannKind found a partner in Sanofi (SNY), only to get dumped in early 2016, and has since been forced to sell property to raise cash. And now MannKind could be on the verge of being delisted from the Nasdaq due to its sub $1 stock price. What now? Piper Jaffray’sJoshua Schimmer and team see a reverse stock split in MannKind’s future:

  • [By Stephen Mack]

JNJ has recently made substantial investments in its pharmaceuticals pipeline. Most notably, in January the company beat Sanofi SA (NYSE: SNY) to buy a stake in Swiss drug company Actelion. The pairing is a perfect match, as it bulks up Johnson & Johnson’s pipeline, and gives Actelion the reach of a global powerhouse.

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

The drug is currently in phase 1 of an extensive trial, after which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will pass the vaccine on to French pharmaceutical company Sanofi SA (NYSE ADR: SNY). Sanofi will carry out the vaccine’s phase 2 and phase 3 trials because “of the high risk and high costs involved in advanced vaccine development,” the Army wrote in an April 21 public letter on its website.

MannKind has just one Food and Drug Administration-approved therapy, an inhalable type 1 and type 2 diabetes drug known as Afrezza. On paper Afrezza looked like a winner. It was fast-acting, it metabolized through the body more quickly than traditional insulin, and it was exceptionally convenient since there were no needles involved. The company also wound up licensing the drug out to Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) in 2014, netting much needed upfront capital and help on the expenses front.

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Own Right Now: Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc.(ALNY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Yesterday, after markets closed, it was announced that US Federal District Court Judge Sue Robinson ruled to issue a permanent injunction against Praluent, the PCSK9 mAb for hypercholesterolemia from partners Regeneron and Sanofi, due to infringement of patents from Amgen. The court has imposed a 30-day suspension (stay) on the injunction to allow for settlement or appeal of the District Court decision. Sanofi and Regeneron have announced their intent to appeal the ruling to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC). The injunction decision is consistent with our counter-consensus published views communicated on 25 January 2016 (“Downgrade to Sell on evidence of likely infringement of Amgen’s PCSK9 patents”) and subsequently. Based on consultation with expert legal counsel, we now put >75% probability Amgen will prevail on appeal and/or Praluent is ultimately removed from the US market, and/or Amgen achieves a settlement substantially in its favor. We currently model $3.3 bn in non-risk-adjusted 2022E US revenues for Praluent, while consensus models $1.2 bn in 2022E US revenues. We reiterate our view from 25 January 2016 to preferentially own Amgen, The Medicines Company (MDCO) (Buy), and Alnylam (ALNY) (Buy) over Regeneron for exposure to PCSK9 inhibitor market dynamics as outcomes trials approach.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matt Hogan]

AbbVie has distributed a significant amount of its earnings in the form of dividends (~60 percent) since the company spun off from Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) in 2013. The company appears to be trading at a 10 percent discount to fair value when applying similar assumptions in the 5-year dividend discount model as shown below.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Finally, and as the icing on the cake, Wall Street uncovered via a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) sold 44 million shares of Mylan stock at $41.60, reducing its remaining position in the company to 25.75 million shares, or about 4.8% of its outstanding shares. Considering all the issues Mylan has had recently, the fact that Abbott substantially pared its large holding in the company is a bit worrisome.

On Wednesday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting small cap trust stock Cross Timbers Royalty Trust (NYSE: CRT):

On the close-up detailed chart of Cross Timber Royalty we can see how well-developed the downtrend is, but what’s so eye-catching is the way the selling volume is starting to build on the way down. The recent bearish crosses of all the key moving average lines were indeed telling of trouble.

Long one of the lowest rated of all U.S. industries, the country’s airlines have made something of a comeback over the past four years. In 2013 airlines scored just ahead of internet services providers (ISPs) and cable TV providers at the bottom of the rankings maintained by the American Customer Satisfaction Index. Airlines’ scores improved by 4.3% in 2016 and now rank ahead of five services, including ISPs and cable guys (still at the bottom), municipal utilities, fixed-line phone services and wireless phone service.

The average cost of a round-trip flight last year was $370. And while cost is a significant factor in which airline a consumer selects, other factors delays, canceled flights, comfort are also important to consumers.

The best airline, overall, was Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE: ALK). Other category winners were Spirit Airlines Co. (NASDAQ: SAVE), which was ranked cheapest; Alaska rated most reliable; JetBlue Airways Inc. (NASDAQ: JBLU) was most comfortable; best for pets was Alaska; and the airline receiving the fewest complaints was Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV).

A long term performance chart shows shares of FuelCell Energy along withsmall cap alternative energy or fuel cell stocks like Ballard Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ: BLDP), Hydrogenics Corporation (NASDAQ: HYGS) and Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ: PLUG) all peaking in 2014 with some signs of stabilization early last yearalong withsome increase this year:

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

In case of QCOM stock, the shorter term 50-day simple moving average (SMA) is all set to break above its long-term 200-day SMA, separated by just a few cents, which are also the most commonly used moving averages for ‘golden cross’. Investors should also note that this is the first time in almost 18 months this bullish crossover is set to occur. And, the last time Qualcomm stock made ‘golden cross’, it set out on a rally. However, a word of caution for investors, the current Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 76.17, which is well above the commonly used overbought threshold of 70, suggests that the stock is in overbought territory, hinting that the upside could be limited. Though the Bollinger Bands indicator is not flashing an overbought signal and generally the combination of these two indicators is considered as a strong signal.

Second, while that quarter didn’t include any sales from Plug’s widely touted alliance with Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), once those sales do begin to roll in later this year, Roth believes they will result in “poor quality of revenue, earnings, and gross margins” for Plug.

best stocks of today: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

After a series of setbacks in its attempts to build new oil pipelines, Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) completed a transformation transaction to acquire U.S. natural gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group for $13 billion, which includes the assumption of debt. The key to that deal was that it increased the combined company’s near-term project pipeline to 23 billion Canadian dollars, which supports TransCanada’s ability to increase its dividend by 8% to 10% annually through 2020. After completing that deal, TransCanada made a bid to acquire all of the outstanding units that it did not own of affiliated MLP Columbia Pipeline Partners (NYSE:CPPL) in a transaction valued at $915 million. These acquisitions solidified TransCanada’s natural gas pipeline growth ambitions, enabling it to diversify away from oil pipelines.

Energy infrastructure companies ONEOK (NYSE:OKE) and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) are both emerging from the energy market downturn as stronger entities. Each made smart acquisitions, with TransCanada buying U.S. gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group, while ONEOK is in the process of gobbling up its MLP,ONEOK Partners (NYSE:OKS). While these deals enhanced the growth profiles of both companies, TransCanada still stands out as the better buy for long-term income investors. Here’s why.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

In a number of articles recently, following the US recent revival and potential approval of the previously blocked Keystone XL pipeline, a number of estimates have been provided suggesting a pending boom for the US steel industry is on the horizon (and US steel stocks have reacted in kind). In fact, this optimism, we believe, peaked today when a report from one of our competitors was published claiming that, the keystone XL pipeline could increase line pipe demand by 14.7% for 2 years. The problem here, we believe, rests with the facts that: (a) TransCanada (TRP) has already taken, and paid for, the steel to build the Keystone XL pipeline (the steel currently sits in storage facilities in both Regina, Canada and Arkansas, United States), (b) neither US Steel (X; SELL), AK Steel, Steel Dynamics, or Nucor have the ability to make the specialized steel required for the miles of pipe associated with this project, to include both the thickness and pressure requirements, according to this article from Reuters, and (c) assuming some of the pipe does need replacement, this would likely come from international steel makers who are capable of producing the specialized steel (again, as highlighted in this Reuters article).

Energy stocks were driven by a hefty dose of M&A during the third quarter. And that will drive returns for TransCanada Corporation (TRP) during the next one.

Top High Tech Stocks To Invest In 2018

As we bid farewell to 2016, a few companies are already gearing up to kick off the new year, which we expect to be much stronger for IPOs. Four companies filed in the past week including APM provider AppDynamics (Private:APDYN), metallurgical coal miner Ramaco (METC), immunotherapy developer Jounce Therapeutics (JNCE) and Swiss biopharmaceutical company ObsEva (OBSV).

Although the IPO market had slow activity this year, with the fewest IPOs since 2009 (105) and the lowest proceeds since 2003 ($18.8 billion), the companies that did go public enjoyed strong returns. In 2016, the average IPO was up 26% and 70% of deals closed the year above their offer price.

AppDynamics, an application performance monitoring (APM) provider, filed for an IPO on Tuesday that we estimate could raise more than $150 million. It is set up to be the first unicorn to launch in 2017, breaking the ice for more venture capital-backed tech companies. This past year saw just 15 VC-backed tech IPOs. We expect more tech companies will soon join AppDynamics in filing once year-end results come in.

Shares of Jack Ma led Chinese eCommerce giant AlibabaGroup Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) have had a stellaryear with more than 110% gains in the year-to-date. The shareholders are a happy lot with the kind of run BABA stock has had this year coupled with the spectacular earnings performancesof theAsian online retail behemoth. We have been bullish about Alibaba stock for some time and we still consider it to be a good long-term buy. However, Alibaba stock has failed to take off even after the strong singles day sales which jumped to $25.3 billion much higher than Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. Of late BABA stock has come under pressure, losing momentum after the initial uptick post-earnings. If the Alibaba stock technical chartis something to go by,BABA stock could be under more pressure in the immediate near-term. Here is why.
BABA stock chart

In the last trading session, Alibaba stock saw a bearishcrossover with its Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator, which is a popular momentum indicator used by technical traders. The MACD line fell below the signal line to form a bearish crossover, which implies that the downward pressure couldcontinue for the next few sessions. Alibaba stock has its next support level at its 20-day simple moving average (SMA), just a few cents away from the last close at 180.95. A breach of this support level could mean the downtrend could continue further. However, even in the case of the breach of support level at the 20-day SMA, one could expect the stock to bounce back from the 50-day SMA which has acted as a very strong support level for the whole of 2017.BABA Technical chart

Can QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) still move higher after the recent pop?

Smartphone chip giant QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) stock is having its best run this year since the sell-off due to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other lawsuits at the beginning of the year. Qualcomm stock is almost 30% up in November. The take overbid by another semiconductor company Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has been the main driving force behind the reversal of fortunes for QCOM stock rather than a change in the fundamental story of the San Diego, California based company. Qualcomm board has rejected the $70 per share acquisition offer saying the bid is too low setting up for a proxy fight. The higher than usual volumes have been also vital for the stock’sustained uptrend. However, the upward surge in QCOM stock is beginning to cool off with the share price being almost flat over the past few days. The question now is, Can Qualcomm stock still climb higher from here? The answer to this could be partly found in the QCOM stock technical chart.Qualcomm (QCOM) stock technical chart

If one takes a look at the chart above, we could see that Qualcomm stock is set forbullish breakout pattern called the ‘golden cross’. Investopedia defines this crossover as “a bullish breakout pattern formed from a crossover involving a security’s short-term moving average (such as the 15-day moving average) breaking above its long-term moving average (such as 50-day moving average) or resistance level. As long-term indicators carry more weight, the golden cross indicates a bull market on the horizon and is reinforced by high trading volumes.”

Now, if one take’s a look at the PLUG stock technical chart, they would be rather disappointed as the downtrend is likely to continue for some time now going by the technical set up.PLUG Technicalchart

As one can see in the chart above, Plug Power stock made a bearish crossover with its 100-day SMA in the last trading session. The stock lost a crucial support level at the 100-day SMA which has acted as a strong support level over the past few months. Earlier on Monday, PLUG stock had made a bearish MACD crossover, as the MACD line fell below the ‘0’ line. With a string of bearish crossovers, the downhill run of Plug Power stock is likely to continue. A bottom may be still some distance away as the stock is not in the oversold zone as per both popular momentum indicatorsRelative Strength Index (RSI) and Bollinger Bands. Only the Bollinger Bands indicator is flashing an oversold signal as the share price breached the lower Bollinger band yesterday. However, the current RSI reading is at 37.58, well above the general oversold threshold measure of 30. So, PLUG stock is yet to bottom out.

Gap plunged 17% to $25.61 today, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.2% to 2,181.90.

Deustche Bank’s Paul Trussell explains why Gap’s fourth quarter looks tough:

While 3Q results were in-line with expectations, the reiteration of FY16 EPS guidance of $1.87-$1.92 (vs. the Street at $2.02) was disappointing as it implies EPS of ~$0.35-$0.40 for 4Q, meaningfully below the Street at $0.50. Results for the upcoming quarter are being impacted by the following factors: 1) a deceleration in industry traffic trends November MTD (we are lowering our November comp forecast to -2% from +2%, and vs. October down -1%); 2) an uptick in marketing spending across all the companys brands during the holiday season (GPS does not expect immediate payback); 3) lapping bonus reversals from last year; and 4) pressure on rent and occupancy due to pre-opening costs associated with the companys Time Square flagship locations for Gap and Old Navy (scheduled to open in the 2H17).

BeforeBayer(NASDAQOTH: BAYRY)arrived onto the scene, I viewedMonsanto(NYSE: MON)as an intriguing growth stock. It has a rich history of delivering value to shareholders and continues to hold a dominant technological edge over key competitors in crop protection products, seeds, and traits. While little has changed its promising pipeline and portfolio, the pending acquisition throws a wrench in anyone’s plans to start or add to a position. Uncertainty stemming from the merger provides several terrible reasons to buy Monsanto at this time.
