The vast majority of Americans are no fans of Russian president Vladimir Putin, but despite a well-oiled anti-Russia machine in Washington his approval level has nearly doubled, according to a Gallup poll released on Feb. 21. The results stand in a stark contrast to the views of many Republicans, led by Arizona Senator John McCain who was recently in Germany to criticize President Trump’s attempt at detente with the Kremlin. McCain, his colleague Lindsey Graham and a small handful of former Russia-based business owners have led a very public media effort against a Russia reset.

The retail sector has been a treacherous one over the past few years, due to heavy competition from e-tailers and cutthroat competition among brick-and-mortar players. Therefore, it’s easy for investors to step on landmines across the sector if they’re not careful. Today, we’ll examine two retail stocks that could cause you to lose a lot of money — Macy’s (NYSE:M) and Under Armour (NYSE:UAA) (NYSE:UA).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

    Under Armour’s class-C shares dropped 3.2% to $18.43, while the S&P 500. Under Armour’s (UAA) class-A shares fell 2% to $19.86.

Under Armour fired about 24 employees in its Connected Fitness unit, with most of them located in Copenhagen. That seems like a big drop for such a small act, but these days it seems like everyone except Barron’s is looking for a reasons to dump Under Armour’s shares.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Under Armour (UAA) have tumbled nearly 60% during the past 12 months as the once high-flying company slashed its expected growth rate. Under Armour is scheduled to report earnings tomorrow, however, and some investors are betting that the release will help turn things around for the company’s stock.

Jeff Schear/Getty Images for Under Armour

Don’t get your hopes up, write Canaccord Genuity analysts Camilo Lyon and Pallav Saini, who contend this won’t be the quarter Under Armour turns things around. They explain why:

The trifecta of headwinds that plagued UA last year (overexposure to sporting goods, overexposure to NA, and overexposure to performance apparel) has not abated, in our opinion. While UA is working to diversify its channel mix as evidenced by its recent entry into Kohl’s (KSS) (and forthcoming entry into DSW (DSW) and Famous Footwear later this year), our checks suggest the apparel segmentation efforts have fallen short of expectations. In addition, we are concerned about the lackluster trends in footwear (and Curry) as it is a key element to the growth story. Specifically, we believe the combination of a lack of newness/differentiation in the Curry 3 coupled with too many releases too soon at a higher price point ($140) resulted in tepid Q1 sales. The latest Curry 3Zero release at $120 appears to be doing modestly better. We highly regard the brand and its long-term growth prospects; however, the product and geographic diversification occurring now will take time to yield results. As such, we remain cautious on UA heading into its 1Q17 report on Thursday, April 27 BMO.

Shares of Under Armour have gained 1.3% to $19.78 at 3:06 p.m. today, while Kohl’s has climbed 1.4% to $39.92, and DSW has risen 1.3% to $21.14.

Top 10 Stocks To Own For 2018: Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Still, there are instances of limited appetite for diversified Europe ETFs, particularly those with significant U.K. exposure. The Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) hasn't added (or lost) any capital since June 20. That ETF devotes 31.4 percent of its weight to U.K. stocks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Perhaps the largest ETF dedicated to tracking French stocks should be getting more attention. In a year in which ETFs tracking the PIIGS economies are struggling, EWQ has been solid. The France ETF's 2.7 percent year-to-date gain is slightly ahead of the comparable Germany ETF and more than twice as good as the Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK).

  • [By Tom Aspray, Senior Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The US stock market is still leading with the Spyder Trust (SPY) up 18.6%, while the European markets (VGK) are now up close to 10% for the year, as they have gotten a nice boost in the past three weeks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Here is a dichotomy. Global small-caps are performing admirably. The WisdomTree Europe SmallCap Dividend Fund (NYSE: DFE) is an example of a Europe ETF that is defying some unfavorable trends. DFE is down 3.5 percent year-to-date. That sounds bad, but it is far better than what investors have been treated to with diversified, large-cap Europe ETFs. The Vanguard Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) and the iShares Europe ETF (NYSE: IEV) are down an average of 5.3 percent this year.

Top High Tech Stocks For 2018

Shares of the U.S.’ largest oil company Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) have been hard hit so far this year — losing 15% over the past 8 months. This month, a second-quarter earnings miss and worries about the effects of hurricane Harvey have driven the shares to trade near 52-week lows. However, don’t be fooled by the negative sentiment that’s brought XOM stock lower over the past year.

Mr. Market May Be Creating Opportunities in Retail

Mr. Market was at it again today (August 2, 2017) sending the retail industry down (-1.28%) in his pessimism while leaving the star pupil Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) unchanged. One historically profitable company that has been caught up in the mess is Big 5 Sporting Goods Corporation (BGFV), which fell 7.8% on the day and was even down 17.5% at one point.

This fall was despite the company posting Q2 FY17 same store sales growth of 0.8% and total sales growth of 1.0% which allowed diluted EPS to grow from $0.10 to $0.13 when compared to the same quarter last year. On the other hand, as stated in the Q2 FY17 conference call, the quarter did not live up to management’s expectations, SG&A expense as an percent of sales rose 0.5%, and management guided that Q3 same store sales growth would be negative in the low single digits. However, in my opinion the sell off was too much as the slide has now left BGFV, a company with not one earnings deficit in the past 10 years, trading at a 10.3x TTM earnings and yielding 5.9% based on a $0.15 quarterly dividend rate.

Top Small Cap Stocks To Watch Right Now

Last Friday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting small capdairy health food product stock Lifeway Foods, Inc (NASDAQ: LWAY):

We watched it peel back from a strong surge October and November, and though it broke below the 200-day moving average line (green) last week, the volume spike said there was a strong chance of a pivot out of a downtrend and back into an uptrend. Take a look at what’s happened in the meantime though, or more specifically, a look at what hasn’t happened. LWAY hasn’t managed to move back above the 200-day line, though it’s tested it several times.

Odds are good that frustrated investors are going to throw in the towel sooner or later (and probably sooner), creating a meltdown at a pace not unlike the one we saw in early November.

We remain positive (OW) on Allison Transmission Holdings (ALSN) & United Rentals. Our and consensus 2017Allison Transmission Holdings estimates have fallen by 2% vs. ~15% for the group, while the shares are down 10% since launch. Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Watch Right Now

Retirement investing is not what it used to be. In the old days, one could just invest in the safe stocks to buy, in blue chips, in a nice ladder of bonds, and do just fine.

Alas, the market has significantly changed. Much of this is due to the historically low interest rates weve had.

The problem with the Federal Reserves attempt to goose the economy is that it killed bond yields, forcing retired investors further out onto the risk curve, making it difficult to find safe stocks to buy. That has pushed stock prices far higher than they should be, if one subscribes (as I do) to the Peter Lynch theory that a stocks price should reflect its net income growth rate to be added to a list of stocks to buy.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

CORNING INC has experienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. We feel it is likely to report a decline in earnings in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, CORNING INC increased its bottom line by earning $1.73 versus $1.34 in the prior year. For the next year, the market is expecting a contraction of 20.2% in earnings ($1.38 versus $1.73).

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate CORNING INC as a Buy with a ratings score of B. This is driven by a number of strengths, which we believe should have a greater impact than any weaknesses, and should give investors a better performance opportunity than most stocks we cover. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, expanding profit margins and notable return on equity. We feel its strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The return on equity has improved slightly when compared to the same quarter one year prior. This can be construed as a modest strength in the organization. When compared to other companies in the Electronic Equipment, Instruments & Components industry and the overall market, CORNING INC’s return on equity is below that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

GLW, with its decline in revenue, underperformed when compared the industry average of 1.7%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues fell by 10.6%. Weakness in the company’s revenue seems to have hurt the bottom line, decreasing earnings per share.

  • [By Peter Graham]

Back on December 5th of 2013, we added Corning (GLW) to our list around $16 and change. The stock ended up moving to a high of just over $25 per share early last year for roughly a 50% gain. Well, the stock has since come off again trading all the way back down to under $16 per share back in August of last year, before finding its way back up above $18 just yesterday. The context here is two-fold. First, the valuation metrics for GLW are once again suggesting another undervalued opportunity for a Company that is the clear leader in specialty glass and ceramics.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Watch Right Now: Natural Gas(NG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By William Romov]

Over the last year, the number of short positions on gold stocks has fallen. One of these stocks is a Canadian gold mining company called NovaGold Resources Inc. (NYSE: NG). In the last 12 months, the volume of short bets on the stock declined 79%, to 522,400. This shows a shift in sentiment from bearish to bullish for gold.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of Canadian gold mining stocks, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) (NYSEMKT:NG) and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) are often the first names to come to mind. And well they should. Yamana Gold is a $2.5 billion giant, and NovaGold Resources seems to have been around forever.

Those two icons aren’t the only way to tap into Canada’s sizeable gold mining industry though. There’s a small, up-and-coming player called Taranis Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNREF, TSX:TRO) that could end up becoming another key fixture of the country’s mining landscape.

Taranis develops mineral deposits into mine-ready projects. Its primary project right now — and it’s enough to keep the company plenty busy for the next several years — is the Thor property located near Trout Lake, British Columbia. NI 43-101 resource reports (indicated and inferred)suggest Thor contains 6.9 million ounces of silver, 35,000 ounces gold, 57 million pounds of lead, 79.4 million pounds of zinc and 3.3 Million pounds of copper (roughly a 14 million ounce silver equivalent (“AgEq”) deposit*) laying in wait in a way that lends itself to the establishment of a low-cost, open pit mining operation. That’s roughly $300 million worth of marketable metals, and the estimates have been steadily getting bigger as Tanaris does more survey work.

And 2017 could be a real breakout year for Taranis, as a lot of the work that’s been done to date starts to mean something. It’s got big exploration plans for this year… this spring/summer to be exact.

The Phase 1 program was completed in September of last year, setting the stage for a more defined and much bigger Phase 2 definition-drilling within the next several weeks. This Phase 2 definition drilling slated for the middle of this year will drill down to between 6000 m and 10,000 m.

To understand Aflac (NYSE:AFL), the first thing you have to realize is that the company does much more than just offer supplemental insurance in the U.S. market. Aflac’s primary business is in Japan, where it serves a larger market and produces more of its revenue and profit than its domestic operations do. Coming into Tuesday’s fourth-quarter financial report, Aflac investors wanted to see continuing signs of solid growth in revenue and earnings, but the insurer didn’t produce the growth in operating earnings that it had hoped to achieve. Let’s look more closely at Aflac to see what its results say about the company going forward.

Aflac posts mixed results

Aflac’s fourth-quarter results showed the impact of the different conditions the insurer faces in its worldwide operations. Total revenue jumped 12% to $5.96 billion, which was nearly double the growth rate that most investors were expecting to see in Aflac’s top line. Net earnings, however, were up only 3% from year-ago levels. Using Aflac’s favored operating earnings measure and adjusting for currency impacts, the insurer’s bottom-line figure of $1.46 per share was $0.17 less than the consensus forecast among those following the stock.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc (NASDAQ:VRX) stock facing resistance.

Shares of specialty pharma company Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc (NYSE:VRX)are in a downtrend for more than two months now. Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc stock was down by almost 50% since its Q1 2017 earnings at the end of February. The stock had made a new 52-week low at $8.36 a week back. Since then the stock has been able to make a marginal recovery, gaining more than 10% this week. However, the stock is now facing resistance from its 20-day moving average. Valeant stock had been unable to break out above the resistance line in the past and had continued to slide downwards. The stock is again likely to face strong resistance from the 20-day moving average. The declining volumes over the week indicate that the stock will find it tough to make a bullish crossover, over the 20-day moving average.

investment trading: The NeutriSci International (NU)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Last week — to the day, in fact — Lexaria Bioscience Corp (OTCMKTS:LXRP) announced it was teaming up with neutraceutical company NeutriSci International Inc (CVE:NU) to create a new kind of health supplement that gave consumers the ability to tap into the benefits of hemp. We hailed it as the shape of things to come. What we didn’t know, however, was how quickly those things would take shape. Just this morning the company told LXRP shareholders it was already forging another such symbiotic relationship…. this one with Hempco Food and Fiber Inc (CVE:HEMP).

Simply put, Lexaria Bioscience is focused on improving the bioavailability of the healthy stuff found in food, supplements, vitamins, and yes, even in cannabis and hemp.

It’s not widely recognized, but the bulk of the vitamins, anti-oxidants, minerals, amino acids and all the other desirable components of the pills you take and foods you eat don’t actually get absorbed into your body. Sometimes as much as 96% of the ingredient in question isn’t extracted, and instead passes right through. Not only is it a waste of time and money, it’s a bit of a hassle to swallow a big capsule — or several capsules — for little to no benefit.

Lexaria Bioscience changes this. In short, Lexaria has developed and patented a proprietary technology that makes valuable molecules taste better and absorb better in the digestive tract. This platform could be applied to a variety of nutritional and health-oriented favorites, but Lexaria is starting with hemp as it’s the most underserved market and arguably the biggest growth opportunity. Hemp, and hemp oil to be exact, can provide a lot of various medical benefits like the reduction of nausea, control of seizures, anti-cancer activity, anti-inflammation effects, and more.

The future for Lexaria Bioscience is partnerships… licensing its science and know-how to companies with existing product lines and distribution networks that can easily inject hemp

  • [By Matthew Briar]

What do you get when you cross a science that drastically improves the absorption of cannabidiol (the healthy component of cannabis) with pterostilbene (an antioxidant) tablet? It’s not a joke in search of a punch line. It’s going to be the health supplement millions of consumers have been waiting for, brought to them by a joint venture between NeutriSci International Inc (CVE:NU) and Lexaria Bioscience Corp (OTCMKTS:LXRP). The two companies announced this morning they were entering a joint venture that would utilize Lexaria Bioscience’s proprietary infusion platform and tap into NeutriSci International’s existing distribution network to create and market a whole new supplement product line.

Lexaria has developed and patented a technology that makes valuable molecules taste better and absorb better in the digestive tract. This platform could be applied to a variety of nutritional and health-oriented favorites, but Lexaria is starting with hemp as it’s the most underserved market and arguably the biggest growth opportunity.

Just to be clear, hemp and marijuana are not the same thing. Hemp doesn’t have any tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) in it, which is the key driver of its psychoactive — the ‘high’ — response. Hemp, and hemp oil to be exact, does have cannabidiol in it though, and for those who’ve been following the saga of medical marijuana and cannabis, they’ll know cannabidiol can provide a lot of various medical benefits like the reduction of nausea, control of seizures, anti-cancer activity, anti-inflammation effects, and more.

NeutriSci International is Canadian corporation that specializes in the marketing, development and distribution of proprietary nutraceuticals. It’s got a rather wide array of products in its portfolio, but the one of immediate interest is its pterostilbene, as it fits best with the hemp-absorption technology Lexaria Bioscience brings to the table.

Pterostilbene (found in blueberries, by the way) is o

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

In the grand scheme of things it shouldn’t be surprising, though odds are good at least a few people are surprised at how quickly it happened. That is, health supplement and healthy-foods brand name NeutriSci International Inc (CVE:NU) and the developer of a cannabis-infusion technology — a means of packing more CBD into hemp oil — called Lexaria Bioscience Corp (OTCMKTS:LXRP) have finalized new supplement that is done testing and will soon be available for consumers. The tablet (a ‘melt’, technically) is a combination of pterostilbene and cannabidiol, offering a double-barreled benefit to the health-conscious.

The benefits of cannabidiol, found in hemp and marijuana, are relatively well understood by the market at this point. Cannabidiol can do a human body a lot of good, like the reduction of nausea, control of seizures, anti-cancer activity, anti-inflammation effects, and more. Pterostilbene is the lesser-known of the two components of the new tablet, but no less impressive and no less beneficial. Pterostilbene is known to combat high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and oxidative stress. Combining the two is a real one-two punch for the health-conscious.

That’s what made November’s news so exciting… NeutriSci International has an established name and marketing channel, while Lexaria Bioscience has the science that makes hemp oil far more functional. Indeed, to fully appreciate the upside for LXRP, one has to embrace Lexaria’s science and why it matters.

The bulk of the vitamins, anti-oxidants, minerals, amino acids and all the other desirable components of the pills you take and foods you eat don’t actually get absorbed into your body. Sometimes as much as 96% of the ingredient in question isn’t extracted, and instead passes right through. Not only is it a waste of time and money, it’s a bit of a hassle to swallow a big capsule — or several capsules — for little to no benefit.

Lexaria Bioscience changes this. In short,

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Indeed, it’s also garnered interest from business partners. In November, Lexaria Bioscience and NeutriSci International Inc (CVE:NU) jointly announced they were entering a joint venture that would utilize Lexaria Bioscience’s proprietary infusion platform and tap into NeutriSci International’s existing distribution network to create and market a whole new supplement product line. In January, the duo announced it had finalized new supplement that is done testing and will soon be available for consumers. Netflix is earning a fresh round of praise from Wall Street after it crushed expectations for subscriber growth in its latest quarter.

On Monday, the streaming giant said it added a stunning 5.2 million new subscribers in the second quarter, crushing its own expectations of 3.2 million new subscribers. Its stock promptly surged 10%, hitting an all-time high.

Wall Street analysts rushed to applaud the company’s push to deliver high-quality content, noting its ability to attract new users to the platform.

“We believe the rapidly growing content offering, led by originals that in aggregate garnered 91 Emmy nominations last week, drove the stronger new sign-ups,” wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne in a note to clients.

Best Heal Care Stocks To Watch Right Now: Ford Motor Company(F)

Advisors’ Opinion:

It’s incredibly easy to lose the context of earnings amid a hectic season — especially this week, which is filled with numerous earnings conference calls — and simply glance at the headlines and big-number figures. That’s a mistake that investors should be wary of making, especially in the case of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F), which is about to face a brutal year-over-year comparison. Here’s why.

BlackBerry’s (NSDQ:BBRY)turnaround has been moving at snail’s pace. In that context, BlackBerry’s deal with Ford (NYSE:F) to expand usage of its QNX software in the latter’s line of connected cars was welcome news. Many see BBRY’s focus on automotive technology as a potential profit center. Norwegian security firm, Promon, recently gave a demonstration of howTesla (NSDQ:TSLA) cars can be stolen by hackers through the company’s official android application, which many car owners use to interact with their vehicles. This was one of the latest unflattering events to take place for Tesla. But this very news can be good for Blackberry. Here’s why.

Volkswagen’s 2017 version of its e-Golf is a significant improvement over the previous model. Ford Motor Co.’s (NYSE: F) Focus EV competes directly with the VW e-Golf on price and range, but June sales of the VW EV were more than double that of the Focus EV. The good news for VW is that six-month sales of the e-Golf are up 30% year over year. The better news for Ford is that Focus sales are up 137% for the first half of this year. The less-good news is that both cars sold fewer copies in June than they did last year.

Best Heal Care Stocks To Watch Right Now: Flowers Foods, Inc.(FLO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Consumers across the nation know Flowers Foods (NYSE:FLO) from its Wonder bread, Tastykake snack cakes, and Nature’s Own bakery brands. Yet the truly novel thing about Flowers is how it has done such a good job of building up a national presence in an industry that is typically dominated by local competition. Coming into Monday’s fourth-quarter financial report, Flowers investors were hoping to see at least some growth in sales and earnings, but the bakery company wasn’t able to deliver the pace of expansion that most shareholders really want to see.
