Despite many of its services being blocked in China, Google has chosen Beijing as the location for its first artificial research center in Asia.

“The science of AI has no borders, neither do its benefits,” Fei-Fei Li, chief scientist at Google’s AI business, said in a blog post Wednesday announcing the new center.

But China’s internet borders are fortified by the so-called Great Firewall, and most of Google’s biggest products — its search engine, YouTube and Gmail — have been blocked by the country’s vast censorship apparatus for years.

Google effectively left China in 2010. But the country’s 730 million internet users make it too large a market to ignore — and Google has made no secret of its desire to find ways to rebuild its presence in the country.

Google’s artificial intelligence unit DeepMind even teamed up with Chinese authorities to hold a five-day festival in the country earlier this year. The event focused on a human-versus-computer showdown in the ancient game of Go.

Many talented authors have posted about publicly listed equities trading at or near asset value with significant tax attributes, namely Net Operating Losses (NOLs), and the inherent asymmetry when an activist or new management makes a break from money losing operations to pursue transformative acquisitions. Several of the activists or lead investors, such as Becker Drapkin (EMKR, CNSI, SDOI) or Sam Zell’s Equity Group Investments (PARR and RELY), have long track records of successfully repurposing tax attribute rich companies via creative financing and transformative acquisitions. There are also some newer entrants into the space, such as KKR (OTCQB:WMIH) and Carlson Capital (OTCQB:SWKH).

Back in 2009, Charles Schwab (NYSE:SCHW) fired the first shot in the battle of the brokerage companies when it introduced commission-free ETFs to investors. The move ignited a movement among brokers to come up with ETF partnerships, some offering their own funds, while others made deals with existing ETF providers to offer their funds at no commission.

This week the iconic discount brokerage executive sold 600,000 shares at prices between $32.50 and $33.75. The total for the trade came to a whopping $20 million. As we have noted in the past, Schwab is past 80 years old and clearly much of his selling over the years has been for estate planning purposes. The shares traded Friday at $35.25, so a fair amount left on the table.

Bank of America’s (NYSE:BAC) shares suddenly dropped last week, slumping ~6 percent on Tuesday as investors rushed to sell financials and take profits in stocks that have soared since the U.S. election. Republicans also don’t appear to be able to score legislative victories as easily as investors thought, which raises concerns over the sustainability of the Trump rally.

Let’s first agree that Bank of America has been a very good investment already in the last several months, but especially over the last year. Believe it or not, but an investment in Bank of America has returned ~70 percent since March 28, 2016, outperforming other financial stocks as well as major stock market indices by a wide margin.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now

2017 was said to be the year of the buyout, and so far, it appears that the M&A prediction is coming true. Last year’s market saw several industries struggling and left some solid companies beaten down. That put them in a vulnerable position as some of their more stable competitors looked for ways to profit from the challenging environment.

Not only have market conditions made buyouts look much more enticing, but the Donald Trump administration’s promises to lower corporate taxes and reduce regulations have also given some companies more incentive to look for takeover targets.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As badly as short sellers want to hate on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), betting against the multiyear rally in this $12.7 billion beverage stock has been about as wise as eating from a box with a skull and crossbones on it. And as a bull market continues to lift all ships, Green Mountain’s ship is going to keep floating above the others.

Green Mountain owns Keurig, the brand of beverage brewers that use self-contained K-Cups to make coffee, teas, and other drinks. While Keurig’s “fad” status has certainly helped tip the deck against GMCR, the fact remains that the firm has done most of the hard work in getting Keurig machines accepted by consumers. With brewers essentially ubiquitous at this point, the firm is able to make money on its cash cow: the K-Cups.

Keurig’s individual-serving cups have big margins and a big installed base. With huge convenience and the relatively large sunk cost that consumers have put into their Keurig machines, it’s a sticky business with big switching costs. Consumers who buy a Keurig are much less likely to spend the money on a competing brand of proprietary coffee pods.

I’ve said before that GMCR is far from cheap right now. But its momentum trajectory is showing few signs of fizzling out, especially as direct competitors such as Starbucks (SBUX) continue to sell K-Cups of their own. Don’t bet against GMCR in September – buy this Rocket Stock instead.

  • [By David Sterman]

But for short sellers in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR), there's another outcome: They've been badly burned as shares have surged, but they insist they've been right all along, and it's only a matter of time before the stock crashes and burns.

  • [By Canadian Value]

So Im going to stick my next out and share my views on four battleground stocks that are among my favorite shorts: World Acceptance (WRLD), Green Mountain (GMCR), Herbalife (HLF), and InterOil (IOC). And next week at the Value Investing Congress I will present another short, my largest.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.
