Hot Bank Stocks To Invest In 2018

Far-right firebrand Marine Le Pen and centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron, set to face off in a May 7 French election with major implications for the future of Europe, have very different views on the economy.

Macron, a former banker who served as economy minister, is socially liberal. He has argued that France’s economy can become more competitive if it embraces globalization and doubles down on free trade. Macron is a keen supporter of the euro and the EU.

Le Pen, meanwhile, represents a radical departure from the status quo in France. She advocates a strident brand of economic nationalism that would mean new trade barriers and the country’s exit from the eurozone.

Marine Le Pen

Le Pen has proposed dropping the euro and switching to a “nouveau franc” of a lower value to help make French exports more competitive. Existing national debt would be converted to the new currency — a move likely to be considered a default.

Hot Clean Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018

Alright, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the second annual edition of Nick’s Picks. I recently published the results of Nick’s Picks 2016 in this article and was quite pleased to see that my selections outperformed the S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) on the year by a fairly significant margin. I hope that will be the case again in 2017, though I admit I’m having a harder time spotting deep value in today’s market than I did last year. Last year, I created a theoretical portfolio with a starting value of $100,001.05 comprised of 24 individual stock selections. At the end of the year, that portfolio was worth $116,499.16, hence to start 2017, I’ve created another portfolio using the $116,499.16 figure so that I’ll be tracking returns on an annual basis as well as on a compounded annual basis moving forward into future years of Nick’s Picks. In this piece, I will unveil the entire Nick’s Picks 2017 portfolio and discuss my decision-making processes generally. I will analyze all of the picks in more detail over the coming days, but I wanted to get my picks out as close to the start of the year as possible so it didn’t look like I was trying to cherry-pick a few percentage points here and there by using the first couple of trading days in 2017 to my advantage.

Samuel Eto’o Fils, called Samuel Eto’o, who turned 35 this year, currently plays as a striker for Antalyaspor, a soccer club in Turkey. Eto’o’s Spanish connection came early in his career when he joined Real Madrid’s youth academy as a teen. He eventually signed on with FC Barcelona in the summer of 2004. Wells Fargo (WFC) is lower Monday, after the board of directors released the results of its internal investigation of the firms sales practices scandal.

The company is clawing back some $75 million in pay from former Chief Executive JohnStumpfand former retailbankleaderCarrie Tolstedt, which the bank, in its 113-page report, holds largely responsible for the problems.

The Wall Street Journal has more details on Wells Fargos conclusions:

The boards results cap a six-monthindependent investigation that has not only rocked the countrys third-largest bank by assets but also the broader banking industry, with dozens of firms examining their own sales practices at the behest of regulators.

Many directors on the San Francisco banks board now face their own scrutiny. Last week, proxy advisory firmInstitutional Shareholder Services Inc. suggested Wells Fargo investorsvote against 12 of the banks 15 directorsat the firms annual meeting April 25.The bank also continues to face federal and state investigations about its sales practices.

A couple of analysts are weighing in on the stock today. Evercore ISIs John Pancari reiterated an Outperform rating and $64 price target on the stock:

We reiterate our constructive thesis onWFCfrom a long term perspective as we expect abating headline risk (in part due to the conclusion of this investigation), still-intact above-peer ROE (despite our modeled expectation for a $0.25 per share go-fwd annual impact from the sales practice issue), and solid competitive position to drive a return of the stock’s premium valuation over time. While we acknowledge concerns around a potential CCAR failure (quantitative and/or qualitative), the broader fundamental impact could prove quite manageable asWFCmay still be permitted to deploy capital at the prior year (2016) level – just not increase deployment, while the related operational costs have

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2018

If you're like most investors, you've been led to believe that it's impossible to earn large amounts of investment income without taking big risks.   This idea – which you'll hear from many financial advisors and brokers – is simply wrong.   It is possible to earn double-digit annual yields on your money – safely – by selling options.   So why doesn't everyone use this strategy to earn consistent income streams? Below, you'll find the five common objections I've heard from readers or that I've found on the Internet… and my responses to them.   REASON NO. 1: Option-selling strategies like covered calls are too risky. You'll earn 5% in premiums, but if the stock falls 25%, you're still down big!   This objection is 100% valid. The way most people approach covered calls is risky. (If you're unfamiliar with covered calls, I encourage you to read this essay.) These folks buy risky stocks because risky, volatile stocks typically offer larger cash premiums than safe, stable blue chips. But most people end up losing on risky covered-call positions because their stocks fall in value.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2018: Skechers U.S.A., Inc.(SKX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matt Hogan]

Skechers USA Inc (NYSE: SKX) is expected to report earnings on Thursday after the market closes. The footwear company has generally traded lower over the last eight quarters in the face of decelerating revenue growth. The stock had been gaining some momentum in the early part of the year until Susquehanna's Sam Poser downgraded the company to a negative rating on March 29th. Poser warned that domestic wholesale growth would fall short of investor expectations and the stock has since fallen 15 percent.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Skechers (SKX) is higher on Friday following its fourth-quarter earnings report.

    Getty Images

Both the companys quarter and guidance were mixed, with higher-than-expected sales, but a downbeat bottom line. The shoe company said that it earned 4 cents a share on revenue that rose 5.8% year over year to $764.3 million. Analysts were expecting a dime per share in earnings on revenue of $726.2 million.

For the first quarter, the company said it expects to earn between 50 cents and 55 cents a share, below the 66 cents analysts were expecting. However its revenue estimate of $1.05 billion to $1.08 billion was above the $1.05 that analyst are modeling for.

Wedbushs Christopher Svezia reiterated Neutral rating and $25 price target on the stock, arguing that while hes encouraged by top-line trends, theyre coming at a cost. From his note:

Shares will likely trade higher (+9% after hours) given the improved revenue outlook and what may have been a low bar on expectations. However, sales growth is not translating into earnings and the inflection continues to move further out, increasing risk should growth not materialize. We are maintaining our NEUTRAL rating and $25 price target or 14x P/E, a 10% discount to historical averages until we see visibility toward an inflection in earnings growth.

Skechers is up 20% to $27.95 in recent afternoon trading.

investing in stock market

So, the bull market is now seven and a half years old, valuations are high, the Federal Reserve wants to raise interest rates and there are uncertainties about the election and growth ahead. Most investors have still been lining up to buy stocks on pullbacks. One day, maybe there will be another serious market correction, or even a bear market.

Investors frequently hear analysts on Wall Street talk about why certain stocks are heading higher. They hear “buy this stock” a lot, but they are often confused and on their own when it comes time to sell a stock. The worst-kept secret on Wall Street is that the analysts have many more Buy ratings than Sell ratings.

24/7 Wall St. reviews dozens of analyst research reports each morning. The goal is to find new investing and trading ideas for our readers.

Some analyst research reports cover stocks to buy, and some reports feature stocks to sell or to avoid. It is this latter category that can freak investors out.

Pessimism, meanwhile, appears to be on the rise.

According to a report by the financial analytics company S3 Partners, short interest in Ralph Lauren has risen since the start of the year, hitting historical levels. And while that short position is expected to keep expanding, bearish sentiments could turn on a dime.

Ihor Dusaniwsky at S3 Partners writes:

RL short interest levels, already at historical highs today, should continue to grow if the recent trend continues, but having made almost 23% in 2016 and 14% in 2017, short sellers may be quick to cover their positions and lock in profits if RLs stock price turns against them.

Short interest in Ralph Lauren fell in 2016 as the stock price fella nd shorts covered positions, netting a return of 22.6%. So far this year, however, the short position as increased $226 million, or 38% to $815 million as of this morning, according to the S3 report.

Its a profitable day for those short sellers. Todays 11% decline Ralph Laurens stock price on an $815 million short position has added $90 million to the short sellers collective bottom line.

Ralph Lauren is down 11.5% in recent market actions to $77.26 a after earlier falling as low as $76.86 a share. Thats the lowest price for the stock since 2010.

Urban Outfitters (URBN) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after Standard & Poor’s said late Friday that it would be getting bumped out of the S&P 500 in to the mid-cap S&P 400 on March 20.

Urban Outfittersdropped 3.8% to $24.21, while the S&P 500 finished little changed at 2,373.47.

MKM’s Roxanne Meyersees downside risk to same-store sales at Urban Outfitters’ Anthropologie stores:

Anthropologie: uptick in clearance depth vs. LY; we see comp (and margin) risk vs. positioning Anthro as potentially performing in line with the -2.9% comp achieved in 4Q. In-store apparel inventory continues to be notably lean, with just two item promotions in the front of the store. Incremental new arrivals this week do not look improved vs. prior weeks, and in our view it could take months before we begin to see even modest improvement. While management believes that Anthropologie could comp in line with 4Q levels in 1Q, we see downside risk. Over the weekend, clearance was an additional 30% off (on top of 50-60% off hard marks), vs. a total average discount of 45% off LY. Online, there were 778 SKUS on sale; of those, 309 were apparel (surprised it wasn’t higher), with 244 SKUs in the home category, followed by 177 in shoes/accessories and 18 in beauty. Within apparel, the largest categories marked down were dresses (51), intimates (54) and tops (88), though with this diversity, appears to us that merchandise issues span across categories.

We believe 4K TV demand is ramping strongly, and management execution has been solid in our opinion. We also note the company’s focus on increased shareholder returns. Overall, we see the stock as undervalued on an ex-cash P/E basis despite growing EPS faster than peers.

  • [By Peter Graham]

Back on December 5th of 2013, we added Corning (GLW) to our list around $16 and change. The stock ended up moving to a high of just over $25 per share early last year for roughly a 50% gain. Well, the stock has since come off again trading all the way back down to under $16 per share back in August of last year, before finding its way back up above $18 just yesterday. The context here is two-fold. First, the valuation metrics for GLW are once again suggesting another undervalued opportunity for a Company that is the clear leader in specialty glass and ceramics.

2016 was a good year to be a Corning(NYSE:GLW) investor. The company’s stock rose 35.5% over the course of the year, handily outpacing the broader market.

Fidelty’s John Mirshekaritook a look at URS(URS) today at the Value Investing Congress. His takeaway: The stock could double in two years.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

His analysis started with URS’s use of its free cash. During the past, it hasn’t been pretty. They spent 6.3 billion on eight acquisitions, they’ve bought companies at valuations higher than own stock and return-on-equity has dropped from high teens to just 6%.

The problem hasn’t been its business: Its return on tangible capital is 17%. Instead, the problem is that its management hasn’t maximized value through capital allocation. URS has lowest valuation: 9x 2013 cash earnings in its industry.

Part of the problem: Management incentives are based on net income. This year, however, relative total shareholder return was added., something Mirshekari calls”a step in the right direction.” In May, URS filed an amended proxy which says it will look to change incentives from net income to return on equity and earnings per share. More importantly, it said acquisitions would end.

If all goes right, URS could double in two years,Mirshekari says, comparing it to AECOM Technology (ACM).

Looks a lot like AECOMM, which did something similar and rallied.

The gaming space has a reputation for beingdominated by male gamers and full of big-budget combat and action orientated games geared for men. However, thats not necessarily the case. Last December, Glu Mobile Inc (NASDAQ: GLUU)bought CrowdStarfor $45 million acquiring a game publisher that has had rare success with female gamers throughitsCovet Fashionwhile its last independently produced title, Design Home, has also proved to be another hit with women (about 90% ofDesign Homesplayers are female who are a little older than the Covet Fashion audience).

Mobile gaming specialist Glu Mobile’s (NASDAQ:GLUU) net loss almost tripled in the first quarter despite a slight jump in revenue from the prior-year period. Its adjusted net loss of $0.15 per share was more than twice than Wall Street’s expectations of a $0.07-per-share loss.

In 2015, Alibaba and Ant invested $680 million in Paytm, India’s mobile payments scheme, giving it a 40 percent share at the time. Last month, they poured another $177 million into it, upping its ownership stake to more than 50 percent. Just last week, Softbank (OTCPK:SFTBY) – Alibaba’s largest shareholder – was reported to be pondering a $1 billion investment in Paytm, which sources say could allow it to hive off its separately branded Paytm eCommerce marketplace. It’s also been suggested that having a Softbank investment that large in Paytm could assuage regulator concerns over China’s possible lock on the Indian market – Paytm currently has 200 million users in India. In December, a company vice president said that Paytm was doing more transactions – 7 million a day – than all of the combined debit and credit transactions in India.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

While I sold the stock above $5 a short while ago, I didn’t expect the stock to take such a plunge right after the merger was announced. This means that the market is giving another chance to buy the stock at a very deep discount compared to where SoftBank (OTCPK:SFTBY) and OneWeb will be buying.

I also really like stories where there are multiple business lines, where one segment is breakeven, or perhaps losing money and obscuring consolidated financial results. These often result in a high sum of the parts valuation. I call it complexity arbitrage. Even professionals are often too lazy to dig into segment results, or JV accounting to figure it out. But its a common theme in my research, from SoftBank (OTCPK:SFTBY), to Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD) to Fox (NASDAQ:FOX) or even Sinclair and Fortress.

Get ready for more “closing sale” signs in the windows of your local retailers.

Ascena Retail Group (ASNA) — which owns the Ann Taylor, Dress Barn, Loft, Lane Bryant, Justice, Maurices and Catherines stores — plans to shutter between 250 and 650 locations over the next two years.

Chief executive David Jaffe made the announcement during a conference call with investors Thursday, and he didn’t specify how many store closures will affect each brand. Ascena could not be immediately reached for comment.

Jaffe said 250 locations will definitely close down, and another 400 will close their doors unless the company can negotiate lower rents at those locations.

He said that the move is necessary to help the company traverse the deeply troubled brick-and-mortar retail market. Jaffe said Ascena is facing a “persistent traffic decline” and expects that to remain a “major headwind” for the company.

Ascena is far from the only company feeling the pressure. Stores that were once staples of American malls are failing rapidly, largely because of increasing competition from digital retailers like Amazon (AMZN, Tech30).

Should oil prices recover, we believe that deepwater drilling activity growth should lag growth in US shale activity, as project economics is generally better in US shales, and E&Ps involved in US shales are generally quicker to react. Deepwater activity is largely comprises a handful of companies (Petrobras (PBR), Statoil (STO), Total (TOT), Shell (RDS.A), BP (BP), ONGC, ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX)) and it is unlikely that these companies can meaningfully increase their rig demand in a short period of time to absorb the current oversupply. Thus, should oil prices rise in 2018, rig demand may increase, but likely not enough to tighten the market, given that supply equaling 43% of current working rig count is stacked and new supply equaling 25% of working rig count is under-construction and should be entering the market in the coming years. As a result, while we expect some improvement in rig utilization owing to rig retirements, it will unlikely be strong enough to meaningfully improve rates in 2018 above spot levels. Any demand increase in the interim could slow rig retirements materially, and be self-defeating. We thus are Sell rated on Transocean, Atwood and Noble.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We believe that the equity market has neutralised much of its underweight energy positioning in 4Q/1Q, but was caught by the sharp rally in crude from end-January. Our base-case sees oil prices still higher by end-2016 (we see >$50/bbl), albeit with a choppy 2Q likely ahead. In this scenario a modest, rather than fully-fledged price-recovery we continue to place a lot of importance on self-help in driving ROE expansion (as opposed to relying simply on oil-leverage). Value-adjusted, we like the self-help stories around Total, Chevron, Statoil (STO), Royal Dutch Shell and Eni (E) in the group. Total is on the Citi European Focus list.

  • [By Jayson Derrick]

BP plc (ADR) (NYSE: BP), Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE: RDS-A) (NYSE: RDS-B) and Statoil ASA(ADR) (NYSE: STO) are expected to outperform their peers by offering: 1) the greatest rate of change in cost reduction through technology and innovation, 2) upstream portfolios with an attractive risk to reward profile and 3) sufficient liquidity to invest in future growth.

You Just Retired, What Are You Complaining About?

Those are the exact words I overheard during a recent conversation on a golf course.  Im not sure if a few beers were involved or what the full context of the conversation was, but the guy he said it too, tried to shrug it off, but walked away hanging his head low and in despair.

Its a heart-breaking situation that plays out time-and-time again when people retire and unknowingly are affected by grief as they transition into retirement.   Grief can be defined as a natural, and often painful response to a loss.  It is commonly associated with the loss of a loved one or significant event like a divorce.  But grief can show up in a number of other ways including loss of a job, health, financial stability, cherished dream, or sense of safety due to a traumatic experience.

Reiterate Outperform rating after results beat and guidance exceeded estimates. ALB continues to see strong Lithium demand and pricing, expects Refining Solutions to return to earnings growth in 2017 driven by stronger HPC demand, and bolstered its balance sheet with the sale of Surface Treatment. Additionally, although Bromine is expected to be flat y/y, the segment should generate strong FCF for Lithium investment. The first trade spat that I covered during my newspaper days was one back in the mid-1990s that pitted Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: KODK) against Fujifilm Holdings Corp. (OTC ADR: FUJIY).

One of those analysts was a gent named Michael W. Ellmann, a onetime Shakespearian literature professor who’d become a securities analyst for Wertheim Schroder & Co. in New York. Michael was covering Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: KODK) for Schroder when I took over the Kodak beat for Gannett Newspapers, and we became fast friends.

Top 10 Heal Care Stocks To Watch For 2018: American States Water Company(AWR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

On Tuesday, analysts at Brean Capital upgraded American States Water Co (AWR), as they now believe the shares have reached an attractive entry point.

The analysts upgraded AWR from “Hold” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $28. This price target suggests an 11% upside to the stock’s Monday closing price of $25.22.

Brean Capital analyst Michael Gaugler said, “The shares have fallen to a price level that we now consider attractive, and our sum-of-the-parts valuation indicates fair value is $28 based on our 2014 EPS forecasts. We recommend investors begin accumulating positions under the $25.50 price level to allow sufficient (10%) upside (excluding dividends) to our target price.”

“We acknowledge that the current environment for utility stocks in terms of interest rate impacts is less than ideal. However, we note the shares of AWR (and our other utility coverage names) have traded at higher P/E multiples when the general level of interest rates was much higher. We see the impact of higher rates as short term and negligible, particularly when we look closely at AWR’s ability to continue to raise its dividend payout versus the peer group by using free cash flow from the ASUS business,” Gaugler added.

American States Water shares were up 72 cents, or 2.85%, during early morning trading on Tuesday. The stock is up 8% year-to-date.

Keep in mind that a “death cross” was confirmed on election day, when the 50-day simple moving average fell below the 200-day simple moving average, indicating that lower prices are likely ahead. The 200-day is now at 666.30. The utility average has returned to my range of key levels of 635.23 and 670.81, which remain magnets for the remainder of 2016. This week’s value level is above the Nov. 14 low at 620.87. Investors seeking the safety of dividends can trade the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU) , which is a basket of 28 utility stocks.

The stock caught his attention, because he noticed a big put options volume last week in the name. He thinks traders should not be in the stock ahead of a possible rate hike.
