Hot Performing Stocks For 2018

At first glance investors may be confounded by Shake Shack’s (NYSE: SHAK) earnings multiple of 86.67, leaving observers in awe over how a burger company can be trading as if it has an economic moat the size of Nvidia’s or Amazon’s. Investors on this very site have even cited Shake Shack’s valuation as reason to dismiss the stock, pointing to a valuation that is nearly three times the size of other high-performing restaurant stocks.

While these investors are correct in their assertions that the valuation is comparatively high, what’s really important is whether or not it is justified. For one, comparing the company’s valuation to the restaurant sector in general without adjusting for differences in expected growth is an exercise in ignoring the differences in growth stages between companies. The real question is not “is Shake Shack’s valuation justified compared to other restaurants?” but rather “is Shake Shack’s valuation justified by underlying growth rates?”

Consider as an example Domino’s Pizza (NYSE: DPZ), the pizza chain which has seen its stock soar almost 400% over the past five years. Currently trading at just over 40 times earnings, Domino’s grew top-line revenue 16.9% last quarter by expanding its store count 7% and posting a same store sales increase of 13%. Despite the proliferation in dough being spun at the chain it remains a terrible benchmark comparison for Shake Shack for all purposes other than setting a valuation floor because of the stark difference in store count growth rate.

In this low interest rate environment, dividends are still looking great. After all, the S&P 500 currently yields about 2%, and that is a heck of a lot better than you can get through most savings accounts.

On top of this, dividends do two important things:

First, a generous dividend payment often lowers a stock’s volatility. I’d much rather own a stock that’s stable rather than one that scatters all over the place. They also tell me how much money a company really has. If the company is willing to part with cash in the form of a dividend payment, then I know they really earned it.

But you still have to do your homework and screen dividend stocks for fundamental health. Stock selection remains critical with dividend stocks, because if you choose them correctly, you can make a fortune both as your invested capital appreciates over the years—and as the quarterly dividend grows.

And now is the perfect time to do so because we’re coming up on a bunch of ex-dividend dates over the next few weeks:

We believe that with strong international results remaining in force into 1Q, PVH is once again positioned to drive solid upside to guidance. Related XLK Analyst: Fintech Is A Big Winner From Tax Reform, 5 Stocks To Play Semiconductor Stocks Are Under Heavy Selling Pressure Market Volatility Bulletin: Keep Your Eyes On Tech (Seeking Alpha)

Tech just got wrecked, said Benzinga PreMarket Prep co-host Dennis Dick.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) “got hit hard.”

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) and Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) — “annihilated.”

Western Digital Corp (NASDAQ: WDC) lost 16 percent over the last eight trading sessions, and Square Inc (NYSE: SQ), after a 264-percent run, conceded 24 percent.

Semiconductors are selling off, and HubSpot Inc (NYSE: HUBS) even earned a Citron short report on its sudden fade.

“This is rotation station we are in right now and tech is out of favor and value is back in favor,” Dick said.

Who’s Sitting Pretty?

As tech falls, the once-forsaken shares of Gap Inc (NYSE: GPS), Macy’s Inc (NYSE: M), L Brands Inc (NYSE: LB), Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) and AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) are surging.

“They like those no-growth stocks right now, and that’s what the money is all flying into,” Dick said. “Long-term, I don’t think this makes a hell of a lot of sense, but short-term, that’s the trade.”

For now, SPDR S&P Retail (ETF) (NYSE: XRT) and Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE: XLF) investors can enjoy more than 6.5-percent five-day gains bolstered by PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 (ETF) (NASDAQ: QQQ)’s 1.8-percent and Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE: XLK)’s 2.7-percent concessions.

But they should always be ready to cash out, as the stocks plunge faster than they rise and risk getting stuck in a rut.

“They all end like this,” Dick said. “They come back after they break, and then it’s going to take some time. It’s got to form a base. Square is caught in a hard place right now. The momentum investors want nothing to do with it. The growth investors want nothing to do with it right now and the value investors like me say it’s too expensive. You need some consolidation, you need to hit a bottom, and then start to look like it’s going to go up again.”

How To Play It

So while value stocks are popping, Dick doesn’t see the trend lasting long.

“It is getting way overdone,” he said, noting that the stocks are low growth and not worth buying now. “If I had any of these in my investment portfolio, I would be ringing the register on these things right now.”

PreMarket Prep co-host Joel Elconin suggested parking the money pulled from tech plays.

“You park that money for a little bit, maybe sell some calls, finance, buy some puts with it, you try and go delta neutral like that and then you get this kind of rally and you get the principle appreciation,” Elconin said.

“Formula for success: rise early, work hard, strike oil” – J. Paul Getty

I must confess to feeling kind of lonely at times this year being one of a handful of observers of the casino space, (and at times, the only one,) standing firm on my undiminished faith that Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) valuations were dead wrong. Now, after the Macau Parisian has opened and LVS Q3 results knocked it out of the park I suddenly have lots of company. I’m bemused to see the bandwagon suddenly getting rather crowded.

There’s no room for gloat or vapid vainglory in my gene pool. I’ve had my share of missed calls – but the casino space is my home stamping grounds. But it is fair to point out that many prophets of doom since the 2015 junket crackdown ran for the exits or pooh-poohed my consistent call on SA that LVS was still worth $70 in my view. Others agreed with me but were less bullish on price. We’re not there yet to be certain. But as I have written before, if the trade holds steady at $60 or above, I feel the ramp-up to $70 or possibly higher by Q2 2017 will move into the speed lane.

Top 5 Clean Energy Stocks To Invest In 2018

AMD (NYSE:AMD) does not need a merger or buyout as some have written. Those days are long gone. If it were going to happen, it would have been two years prior when AMD was really feeling the pain and the balance sheet was a wreck. Since then they have drastically reduced debt while expanding product offerings. In this article we are going to cover a brief history, growth prospects, why a buyout will not happen, and how Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) might get in bed with AMD.

History

To look at AMD we have to look to the future. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s AMD was basically a company that specialized in flash memory and had a struggling x86 CPU business. Sure AMD had periods where they were the leader but these were brief due to Intel’s relentless foundry upgrade cycle. AMD could not match Intel from an investment standpoint in the foundries due to cash constraints and product slippage. Nor did Intel’s questionable business practices help but that is for another time. Fast forward to the present. We have an AMD that is emerging from a long healing process and the future outlook is what drives stock prices.

J.C. Penney and Nordstrom should report holiday sales in the coming days, but there’s evidence elsewhere that it was a weak season for bricks-and-mortar retailers. Shares of Victoria’s Secret parentL Brands(NYSE: LB) were down 9% after it said comparable sales fell 1% in December and that it expects fourth-quarter earnings to come in at the low end of its previously stated guidance of $1.85-$2.00.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

L Brands (LB) ended at the bottom of the S&P 500 on Thursday, after disappointing guidance overshadowed better-than-expected earnings.

L Brands slid $9.19, or 15.8%, to $48.94, its lowest close since 2013. By contrast, the S&P 500 gained 0.99 points, or 0.04%, today to 2363.81.

Oppenheimers Anna Andreeva and Samantha Lanman reiterated an Outperform rating and $75 price target on the stock, but admit that the magnitude of L Brands downward forecast was disappointing, even with weak industry trends signaled by peers like Wal-Mart (WMT), Macys (M), and TJX Cos. (TJX).

While they still are bullish, they admit that the bottom isnt clear:

In the last 5 years, LB’s multiple averaged in high-teens given quality of brands/management, with 13-14x trough not seen since early ’13valuation could still compress assuming guidance isn’t conservative enough. Sticking with Outperform for now, albeit near-term visibility is worsening.

L Brands is down 25% this year.

L Brands Inc. (NYSE: LB) also dropped about 2.6% on Friday to record a new 52-week low of $56.01. The stock closed at $57.48 on Thursday. Volume was about 33% above the daily average of around 2.5 million shares. Wednesday’s report that ecommerce giant Amazon.com is considering competing with the company’s Victoria’s Secret stores has caused some investors to seek greener pastures.
