The king of passive funds is expanding its presence in the active space. Vanguard said it plans to launch six factor-based ETFs and one factor-based mutual fund — five of which are targeted at financial advisors and institutional investors seeking to maximize value, momentum, liquidity and quality or to minimize volatility.

The funds have expense ratios from $0.13 to $0.18 and should begin trading in the first quarter of 2018. They represent the first actively managed ETFs to be sold by Vanguard in the United States; the firm currently offers factor ETFs in Canada and the United Kingdom.

The mutual fund and ETFs will offer a multi-factor approach. It would have an investment minimum of $50,000.

“Our factor-based fund offerings serve as a valuable extension of our low-cost active lineup, providing additional ways for suitable investors to help meet their long-term objectives by targeting exposure to specific factors in the market,” said Vanguard Chief Investment Officer Greg Davis, in a statement.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Invest In Right Now: American International Group Inc.(AIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

American International Group (AIG) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after its earnings fell well short of the Street consensus.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    AIG dropped 8.9% to $60.85 today, while the S&P 500 gained 0.5% to 2,349.25.

Yes, AIG’s earnings were bad. It reported an operating loss of $2.72 a share, missing forecasts for a profit of 42 cents, according to Bloomberg. And it didn’t help that John Paulson’s Paulson & Co. cut its stake in the insurer.

You’ll notice the forecast is different than what it was in my earlier post on AIG–and an AIG spokesperson even reached out to tell me that the consensus, at least according to FactSet, should had been for a loss of 61 cents a share. Why the confusion? RBC’s Mark Dwelle and Scott Heleniak have your answer:

In reporting results AIG has recast all of its business segments, transferring various pieces to a Legacy unit, reallocating corporate expenses and net investment income as well as making some changes as to what is included within operating income, the most notable of which is that loss reserve discount effects in U.S. Commercial Insurance (and the Legacy unit) are now excluded from Operating Income. Accordingly, comparisons to prior reported results, and to some extent our 4Q16 estimates, require some reconciliation.

Macquarie’sAmit Kumar considers the bull and bear cases on AIG:

On 2/14, after market close, AIG reported a Q4 operating loss of $2.72 per share vs. our estimate of a $0.52 loss and street consensus of a $0.54 loss. Results are not directly comparable to street consensus due to lack of unanimity in terms of reserve adjustment estimates. Results included a higher than estimated $5.6 billion or $3.56/share of adverse development. The company had previously announced the possibility of a material reserve charge in the quarter. The bulls on the stock would note that this quar

BMO’s Charles Sebaski explains why he upgraded American International Group (AIG) to Outperform from market Perform:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

AIG has been trading at discount to its tangible book given its mid-single digit return profile; however, we expect AIGs valuation to keep increasing with its improving return profile. We are now forecasting AIG to generate a 9.9% operating return on tangible common equity (ROtE) in 2018, which would be a 450 bp improvement from 2016. A double-digit return profile warrants the 1x multiple that we are applying to its tangible book value per share. While we expect AIGs return profile to benefit from lower taxes, we also expect the companys life and retirement business to improve from the rising interest rates as those spread businesses are more interest rate sensitive than the P&C business. That said, we expect continued improvement on both the loss and expense sides of the P&C as contributing factors to the ROtE improve.

BMO also upgraded Arch Capital Group (ACGL), Brown & Brown (BRO), and Travelers (TRV).

Shares of American International Group have declined 0.4% to $65.60 at 3:36 p.m. today, whileArch Capital Group has gained 2% to $87.90,Brown & Brown has advanced 0.5% to $44.65, andTravelers has risen 1.3% to $120.79.

Wednesday was yet another record-setting day for the stock market, as the Dow climbed triple digits and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite followed the venerable average to unprecedented heights. Economic data showing rising inflation made it more likely that the Federal Reserve will look to boost interest rates at its next Federal Open Market Committee meeting next month, and the ripples throughout the bond market sent many investors to consider stocks instead. Yet despite the substantial rally, some stocks missed out on the move higher, and American International Group (NYSE:AIG), Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK), and Movado Group (NYSE:MOV) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

This jump primarily had to do with Berkshire’s stake in Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC), which rose 5.4% on Nov. 9 alone. This spike in the embattled bank’s shares added $1.7 billion to Buffett’s fortune in the span of 24 hours.

  • [By Gregg Greenberg]

Stocks of Wells Fargo (WFC) were up 4% last year, outperforming both the broader market and the overall financial sector. Erik Oja, equity analyst at S&P Capital IQ, said the megabank will shine even brighter in 2016 once higher interest rates kick in.

"We think Wells Fargo is best poised to benefit from higher rates due to its large deposit base and industry-leading loan growth," said Oja, adding that he expects much higher revenue growth in the coming year after a recent slowdown.

Cramer was bullish on JPMorgan and Bank of America (BAC) , but held Wells Fargo (WFC) , another Action Alerts PLUS name, as his favorite in the group.

In addition to this, Warren Buffett has also built sizable positions in a number of major US banks.Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC), U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB)and Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS)have the leading positions in Berkshire Hathaways portfolio. In fact, Wells Fargo is Berkshire Hathaway’s second largest stock holding. In addition to this, Berkshire Hathaway also owns $5 billion worth of Bank of Americas preferred shares and warrants to buy 700 million of the banks ordinary shares at just $7.14 (current price $22.10) anytime until September 2021. These banks are positioned to become the biggest beneficiaries of the increase in interest rates. To get an idea of how this might happen, consider Bank of Americas forecast in which it predicted a $7.5 billion boost to annual net interest income following a 1-percentage-point increase in interest rates.

Wells Fargo said it earned $1 a share on revenue of $22 billion. Analysts were looking for earnings per share of 97 cents on revenue of $22.3 billion.

Analystshave digetsed the news, and are out withtheir takes on the quarter, and opinions run the gamut.

Evercore ISI’s John Pancari reiterated an Outperform rating and $60 price target on Wells:

A more conservative fee outlook (mainly mortgage) and modest tweak to B/S growth expectations led to a slight downside EPS revision to 2018. That said, expense efforts are now the greater focus given the n/t headwinds – but also the substantial opportunity to pare costs and limit pressure on returns. All eyes on the May 11 investor day.

Sandler O’Neil’sR. ScottSiefers reiterated a Hold rating and $55 price target:

WFCcontinues to address the sales scandal decisively and transparently, but too many uncertainties and issues remain. We are keeping our HOLD rating. We considerWFCs 1Q performance fine, but not its best. On the plus side, credit trends were very good, and a rebound in trading allowed total fees to come in better than we had foreseen (though we suspect that at least a portion of this Qs performance will normalize in coming periods). But the NIM only held firm (whereas we would have hoped to see at least a little expansion), loan growth was pretty weak, and costs came in higher than we had anticipated.

Raymond James’s David Long reiterated an Underweight rating:

The EPS beat was driven by a lower tax rate (management guided to a reversion) and a reserve release from improvement in energy-related credits, while the miss on expenses (deferred comp) outweighed the beat on fees (trading gains). Additionally, March retail banking gr

Internet bank holding companyBofI Holding, Inc.(NASDAQ:BOFI) reported financial and operating results on April 25 after market close, with net income of $41 million — the most-ever in a single quarter in its history. BofI delivered strong growth in net interest income, book value, loan originations, and a number of other key metrics.

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

    3. BofI Holding (NASDAQ:BOFI) is a more speculative choice, but one that deserves serious consideration. The bank, whose name stands for “Bank of Internet”, is the oldest internet-only bank in the U.S. By maintaining an online-based business model, the bank enjoys competitive advantage such as low overhead and the ability to offer better rates on loan and deposit products than peers.

Internet-based bank holding company BofI Holding (NASDAQ:BOFI) is not like most other banks. However, there are a lot of less-obvious things about BofI Holding that you might find interesting.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Jefferies announced on Wednesday that it has cut its rating on Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. (SKT).

The firm has downgraded SKT from “Buy” to “Hold,” and has lowered the company’s price target from $40 to $35. This price target suggests an 8% upside from the stock’s current price of $32.22.

Analyst Omotayo Okusanya commented: “We expect near-term headwinds for the mall and outlet mall segment as tenant sales growth appears to be slowing.”

“At SKT, development yields on two projects have also been reduced. Further, rising interest rates negatively impact our DDM-derived PT. Our lowered PT of $35 represents a 10% total return over the next-twelve-months (NTM); we are downgrading to Hold,” added the analyst.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Heading into its earnings following the close of trading yesterday, shares of American International Group (AIG) had gained 34% from its low on Jun. 28 to Feb. 14. Then the bottom fell out.

Best Financial Stocks To Buy For 2018: BofI Holding Inc.(BOFI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

Internet-based bank holding company BofI Holding (NASDAQ:BOFI) is not like most other banks. Since the name BofI stands for “Bank of Internet,” one thing that obviously makes the bank unique is its online-only business model. However, there are a lot of less-obvious things about BofI Holding that you might find interesting.

  • [By Jason Hall]

While Netflix’s (NASDAQ:NFLX) slower-than-expected subscriber growth in its first quarter has received lots of attention since the results were posted earlier this week, investors shouldn’t overlook the valuable insights in the streaming-TV company’s earnings call. Key topics during the call included a look at Netflix’s international potential, why management envies YouTube, what to expect from the U.S. market, and more.

Here are five telling quotes (via a Reuters transcript) from Netflix’s first-quarter earnings call.

The internet: still a “phenomenal opportunity”

Noting that the company expects to cross the 100 million subscriber mark this weekend, one analyst asked Netflix CEO Reed Hastings about what hitting this milestone means for the company’s longer-term outlook. In Hastings answer, he turned his focus to the big opportunity on the internet.

The long saga regarding Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) has finally come to a head. Well, maybe. Rather than KKR & Co. L.P. (NYSE: KKR) investing $150 million, Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) will be investing up to $480 million in the streaming music rival. With its ticketing unit sale taking place as well, it might seem that Pandora is getting a great deal and helping to bolster its books.

Unilever Out From Under Spreads

Unilever (NYSE:UN and UL) was formed in 1929 through the merger of Margarine Unie and Lever Brothers. Products based on edible oils have been at its core ever since, and will remain so despite the sale of its spreads activities to KKR (NYSE:KKR) for 6.8 billion on a cash-free, debt-free basis. This is a little higher price than the deal talk had suggested. Unilever has long since disposed of its oil palm plantations and much of its oil crushing and trading activities, and it is separately seeking a buyer for its olive oil business in Greece.

What KKR will do with a margarine business is unclear: Unilever has sold it because, after strenuous efforts over many years, it simply has not been able to generate acceptable growth from it. The head of the spreads business, who will be moving with it to KKR, is making noise to the effect that it can (for instance, in a quotation included in the link above), but this seems unlikely. Otherwise, the sale and transfer of current management is inexplicable. Rigorous cost-cutting and being milked for cash seem like the businesss most probable future.

Unilevers soap and shampoo businesses will remain important consumers of edible oils on a world scale, but clearly with considerably less purchasing power than hitherto. The company has made much of its efforts to encourage sustainable practices and the reduction of child labor in oil palm agriculture policies that KKR says it will retain. But since the successors will have less market muscle than the combined purchasing activities of Unilever before this sale, it is not certain that they can be as effective in fostering better practice.

Unilever is being somewhat coy about what it will do with the proceeds. It has said it will return them to shareholders unless a compelling transaction comes along. Unilever has been very actively acquisitive in recent years, but with deals priced much less than the $8 billion it will receive for spreads, which it can fund from cash flow. These have concentrated on fast-growing niche products, and assuming that such purchases continue to characterize its acquisition strategy, then it is unlikely that a deal that size will come along. Shareholders can probably expect to recover most of the proceeds of the sale of spreads. A special dividend is most likely, given the complexity of share repurchases under Unilevers dual share structure.

Sale of the spreads business will mean that its revenue and income are more responsive to these deals and to its internal efforts to accelerate growth. It is, however, no panacea: growth remains elusive for all large consumer products companies. Reduction of inertia will not alone foster the growth for which Unilever is striving, and as I discussed recently, its operating environment is not becoming any easier. Given its performance year-to-date, and its fairly lofty valuation, investors muted reaction to the announcement that the long-anticipated sale has at last closed seems about appropriate. Unilever plcs ADR is up 0.76% as I write, slightly less than the Standard & Poors 500 Index.

Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) investors should monitor the US political changes and central bank policy – currently these factors indicate a strong buy recommendation for Bank of America shares. Investors should keep an eye out for ratification of fiscal and infrastructure reforms Trump previously outlined throughout the course of his presidential campaign. In addition Fed policy decisions to raise interest rates and political measures designed to accelerate corporate dynamics are the key points of focus.

The US banking sector has had significant gains since the surprise election victory from Trump. US bank stocks across the board have been spurred on by the policy suggestions coming from Trump’s team. Investors have been reiterating this sentiment – sending capital into the Bank of America stock such that the share price has risen over 30% since November 2nd 2016 – to reach current levels exceeding 22USD per share. The policy proposals have included the possibility of repealing Dodd Frank regulation. This regulation was put in place following the financial crisis and has hurt banking business profits since its implementation – as it requires that conservative capital ratios and quality of capital standards are met to prevent future financial contagion. Loosening this regulation will be a liquidity driver for Bank of America.

Best Financial Stocks To Own Right Now: American International Group Inc.(AIG)
