7 Dividend Growth Stocks Worth Owning

Do you invest in dividend growth stocks? If you don’t, you ought to consider doing so. These dividend stocks to buy could be your ticket to a better retirement.

Many dividend investors get caught up focusing on yield when the growth is what’s truly important. By utilizing the power of compound interest, investors can achieve higher returns by merely owning the stocks of companies who regularly hike their dividends.

A Canadian finance site, Hardbacon, provides an excellent example why investing in dividend growth stocks is a sound idea:

“If you invest in a stock which pays $1 in dividends a year and costs $25, it means it yields 4% at the time you buy it (dividend yield on cost),” wrote Sam Kovacs. “If the company increases its dividend 10 cents every year, in 10 years those same stocks which you bought for $25 will be paying out $2 in dividends, an outstanding 8% yield on cost.”

That’s the power of income-growth stocks. Here are seven dividend stocks to buy that are worth owning. If that’s not enough to get your mouth salivating, each has hiked its dividends in 2017 by 20% or more!

If I told you that I could sell you a dividend growth stock that’s increased its annual payout for 14 consecutive years, is yielding more than 2%, and raised its 2017 dividend by 21.4%, you’d want to know more.

But slap this description on Minneapolis-based Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) and you’re likely to turn very skeptical. After all, Best Buy is supposed to be getting slaughtered in the electronics arena by Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN).

Not so fast.

Take a quick look at Best Buy’s stock chart and you’ll see that it’s currently trading within 3% of its all-time high of $69.39. In 2017, it gained 64% on the year and that’s after a 45% gain in 2016.

During the critical holiday shopping season, Best Buy held its own against Amazon according to industry analysis.

I’ve been a fan of CEO Hubert Joly all the way back to 2013 when the former hospitality executive implemented his turnaround plan for the electronics retailer.

Don’t be fooled by the company’s so-called weak Q3 2017 results. Same-store sales grew 4.4% and it earned 78 cents a share despite lowering prices to match Amazon, etc.

Best Buy could easily hit $100 in 2018.

The U.S. economy is unbelievably healthy right now and nobody benefits more from this than Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:MTN), North America’s largest operator of ski resorts.

Its stock hasn’t had a down year since 2011 and although it’s down in early 2018 trading, all the signs point to another stellar year on the slopes.

“We have continued to drive significant growth in our destination markets which represent approximately 60% of our increase in pass units,” CEO Rob Katz said recently. “We continue to see strength across all geographies, with particularly strong performance in Northern California, the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast and continued solid growth in Colorado and British Columbia.“

The sale of season passes as of the beginning of December were up 14% in units and 20% in dollars over last year; they’re not headed downhill anytime soon.

Acquisitions drive Vail Resort’s growth — Whistler Blackcomb being its most significant to date — and it’s not about to stop looking for resorts to buy that cater to both the affluent destination visitor as well as the local season-pass skier.

We might be aging but not quickly enough to slow Vail Resorts over the next decade. MTN might be the best dividend growth stock of the bunch.

Higher energy prices to a limited extent drive stocks like Oneok, Inc. (NYSE:OKE), one of the biggest midstream service providers in the U.S.

As most of the Northeast fight a brutal winter storm early in 2018, natural gas prices have spiked to unprecedented levels; a problem made worse by the fact there’s a shortage of pipelines shipping natural gas to cities like New York and Boston.

Oneok can’t help with the Northeast as its pipelines and processing facilities are primarily west of the Mississippi River. However, it can help with the processing and shipping of natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) in the regions it serves.

On January 4 it announced that it’s building $1.4 billion pipeline to transport NGLs from the Rocky Mountains to its Mid-Continent NGL facilities providing the middle part of the country with a more significant energy supply.

In 2017, OKE stock was relatively flat, down 2% on the year, significantly lower than the S&P 500, which was up 22%.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that Oneok upped its annual dividend this past year by 21.1% to $2.98, providing a juicy 5.3% yield — double the 10-year U.S. Treasury.

As energy stocks go, Oneok’s a keeper.

This mostly unheralded stock is currently trading within 5% of its all-time high of $80.47. In 2017, it was up 39%, which followed an 85% gain in 2016. Over the past decade, it’s achieved an annualized total return of 12%, 300 basis points better than the S&P 500.

Currently yielding 1.9% after all of these gains, Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corp. (NYSE:AGM), better known as Farmer Mac, continues to be the agricultural industry’s best friend providing credit to agricultural lenders and businesses across the U.S.

With the need for food production likely to remain high indefinitely combined with a rigorous underwriting process, an investment in Farmer Mac is as reliable as they come.

In 2017, Farmer Mac upped the annual dividend by 38.5% to $1.44 a share. That’s money in the bank. Five years ago, AGM stock paid an annual dividend of just $0.48. In 2016, the company initiated a 30% payout target of core earnings which should keep the dividend growing at double digits on an annual basis.

If you like a little capital appreciation with your dividend growth stocks, AGM is for you.

Can you guess the last time UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:UNH) stock lost money on an annual basis? Try the Reagan era. I’m just kidding. It was 2008. Since then it’s rattled off nine consecutive years of gains.

UNH operates two business segments: Health Benefits, which provides healthcare insurance to millions of Americans and Optum, its provider of healthcare services. Together, they play a big part in the wellness of America.

In December, UNH announced that it was buying the Davita Medical Group for $4.9 billion from Davita Inc (NYSE:DVA). Davita wants to focus on its dialysis business, so Optum was a natural home for the company’s nearly 300 clinics and six outpatient surgical centers.

When you’ve got a market cap of nearly $220 billion like UnitedHealth, a $4.9 billion acquisition is coffee money — but it provides additional growth for Optum, so it’s a win/win.

Bottom line: UNH stock isn’t a big yielder at 1.3%, but it’s track record of growing its stock price should be enough for most investors.

Of all 31 stocks on my list, Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE:ITW) has the fifth-longest streak for the consecutive number of years raising its annual dividend at 43. In 2017, it raised its dividend by 20.0% to $3.12 per share. Since 2012, it’s grown its annual dividend by 15% on a compounded basis with the last two years seeing increases above that average.

Yes, it only yields 1.9%, but the dividend yield isn’t nearly as important as the dividend growth because a growing dividend typically is the result of growing earnings.

Usually, I’m not a fan of share repurchases, but ITW does a good job keeping track of how it’s doing on its buybacks. Over the past five years it’s repurchased $11.4 billion of its shares reducing the share count by 28%, but more importantly, earning a 24% internal rate of return on those purchases.

Even better, over half the $11.4 billion was used to buy shares in 2013 and 2014 at prices of $85 or less — it currently trades at $166.

Over the past five years, the industrial conglomerate’s been on a transformation to building a business that’s growing its margins and organic revenues while responsibly allocating capital.

Frankly, Illinois Tool Works is what General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) ought to aspire to.

Who doesn’t love the Cheesecake Factory Inc (NASDAQ:CAKE)?

Seriously, anyone who doesn’t enjoy a meal at the restaurant chain best known for its variety of cheesecake desserts every now and again, really has a hard time letting loose.

Sure, it’s not gourmet, but when you’ve managed to increase your dividend by 20.8% in a single year and your stock is currently yielding 2.3%, the cheesecake isn’t the only thing worth trying at the California company.

The Cheesecake Factory might be old news in the U.S., but here in Canada where I live, the first location just opened this past November in Toronto at Yorkdale Mall, Canada’s most productive mall regarding sales per square foot.

Lineups were snaking through the mall of people trying to get their fill. Canada could easily use another 19 or 20. It will do very well here despite the fact Canadians have a hard time getting excited about cookie-cutter restaurant chains.

Cheesecake Factory’s financials might not be as strong as past years but its growth drivers — Canada, getting its cheesecake and other desserts into the grocery stores and investments in North Italia and Flower Child restaurants — suggest it’s got plenty to push the stock higher in the coming years.

As of this writing, Will Ashworth did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy For 2018

"Short Sellers Retreat Amid Rally," ran the headline in the Wall Street Journal.   Curious readers stopped and stared. It was the premise of the headline that arrested them. Who knew that there was even one bear left to give ground at the 100-month mark of the post-2008 levitation?   El toro is the topic at hand. It's a most unusual bull market (we count as one the updrafts in stocks and bonds). An unzestful, low-volume, and low-volatility affair, it seems to belong on a psychiatrist's couch. We write to catalogue its singularities with the purpose of addressing the always pertinent question: What to do with money besides enjoy it?   No. 1 is the zest deficit. Since the S&P 500 Index bottomed at an intraday low of 666.79 on March 6, 2009, the blue chips have appreciated by 271%. The country has grown, too, although – famously – the economic expansion leaves much to be desired. Trailing 12-month earnings for the S&P 500 peaked in the third quarter of 2014, and disappointments abound in the data that purport to measure growth in GDP and productivity.

In anSEC filing on November 14th, Berkshire disclosed that it had made investments in three airline companies. At the time of filing, Berkshire owned 21.8 million American Airlines (NSDQ:AAL) shares worth $797 million, 6.3 million Delta Air (NYSE:DAL) shares worth $249.3 million, and 4.5 million United Continental (NYSE:UAL) shares worth $237.8 million. SeparatelyCNBC, citing Buffett, reported that Berkshire has also made an investment in Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) after Sept. 30. While it is not clear who made this investment decision, many expect it to be one of his deputies as Buffett generally concerns himself only with large positions. The position’s in the airline companies are relatively small. And after all, it was one of the two who decided on behalf of Berkshire Hathaway to acquire Precision Castparts (NYSE:PCP), the equipmentmanufacturer for the aircraft and energy industries, for $37.2 Bn.

“This sub-par activity for the transportation sector is not for lack of investor enthusiasm. In fact, Airlines have had a fairly headline-heavy year (for better or worse) including high-profile positions undertaken by notorious airline bear Warren Buffett in United Continental Holdings (NYSE: UAL), American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) and Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV),” said Direxion in a note. “Couple that with continuously low crude oil prices and a presidential administration that campaigned heavily on rebuilding U.S. infrastructure, and transportation stocks should be having a record year.”

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Buy For 2018: Roadrunner Transportation Systems, Inc(RRTS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Tuesday was another down day for the Dow Jones Industrials, which fell more than 100 points to drop further below the 20,000 level. But broader market measures were mixed, and the Nasdaq Composite even managed to gain ground. Continued uncertainty about the impact of new policies from the U.S. federal government have kept markets a bit turbulent, and the beginning of a two-day meeting of the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee could set the tone for monetary policy in 2017. Some stocks had bad news that sent them lower today, and among the worst performers were Seadrill (NYSE:SDRL), Roadrunner Transportation Systems (NYSE:RRTS), and Tempur Sealy International (NYSE:TPX). Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

D.R. Barton, Jr.

Editor’s Note: Sitting on the sidelines during record highs only means you’re missing opportunities. Playing markets proactively with D.R.’s loss-limiting strategy – just as relevant today as when he first introduced it in 2015 – can help insure your portfolio against any sudden drops. Here’s D.R…

One phenomenon I find holds true in trading and investing is that some things that diehards think should not go together just work.

It’s a lesson I learned early. It came from my love of eating, which led to my love of cooking. Specifically, it was a batch of hot, gooey brownies followed by a swig of beer – and, believe it or not, howdeliciousthat odd combination turned out to be – that taught me to explore what the unexpected could do…

In this case, the unexpected combination that makes this strategy work so well pairs value investing with technical trading. This open-minded approach made my investing immensely more profitable because it turned me on to a “trick” that got me 70% fewer losing trades…

Others believe he sold his coins because Litecoin is partnering with Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB).

This theory suggests Litecoin could become the digital payment platform for the social network, and Lee was required to sell his coins by Facebook as part of the deal.

  • [By Adam Levy]

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is a global phenomenon. Even with 1.86 billion monthly active users as of the end of 2016, the company is still growing its user base at a fairly steady clip in the high teens.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Investors have questioned the relevance of the company’s Snapchat app in a market dominated by messaging services such as Facebook’s (FB) WhatsApp and the business-focused Slack Technologies. Wall Street has also raised questions about its ability to monetize the billions of messages it handles each day.

  • [By Vikram Nagarkar] We all know about Instagram now, but Facebook Inc. stock (NASDAQ:FB) could have 3 new catalysts.

Menlo Park, California-based Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)has had a good run so far in 2017, rising by over 22% Year To Date (YTD). However, the rally might not be over. While analysts are still increasingly bullish on Facebook’s prospects based on its current set of catalysts, the company is putting in place growth drivers that could keep growth at elevated levels over the coming years. Even as concerns over peaking ad-loads on the core Facebook platform seemed to be coming to the fore, Facebook has managed to leverage its photo sharing app, Instagram, to drive top line numbers. And while Instagram still has huge potential, Facebook is exploring what it can do with its other online properties, like Messenger and WhatsApp, both of which could propel Facebook’s next phase of growth.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Treating diseases that have a genetic component by altering the expression of the responsible genes is a promising new field of medicine, but it has been much less straightforward than biopharmaceutical companies had expected. Two contenders in this area, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY) and Ionis Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:IONS), saw a mix of setbacks and success in 2016.

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY) jumped as much as 14.5% today after announcing earnings after the bell yesterday. As a development-stage biotech, it wasn’t the revenue or the earnings that caused the spike, but the progression of Allnylam’s pipeline.

Top 10 Tech Stocks To Buy For 2018: Avago Technologies Limited(AVGO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Nelson Hem]

In Jack Hough’s follow-up article, “Broadcom Stock’s Big Run Isn’t Over,” see how this chip maker is gaining share in Apple’s new iPhone and cashing in on Arista Networks’ success. Friday’s sell-off after Broadcom Ltd (NASDAQ: AVGO) posted earnings that failed to impress investors is no reason for shareholders to give up, says Barron’s, but there are two reasons it is worth noting.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

The recent takeover bid by Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has simply changed smartphone chip giant QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) shares’ fortunes after struggling for the majority of the year since the January sell-off. ThoughQualcomm board has rejected the $70 per share acquisition offer, this news has lead to a strong rally in QCOM stock since October end gaining more than 30%. Now,there has been some positive news coming in over the weekend which could further boost thespirit of Qualcomm investors. Is there more upside left in QCOM stock in the near-term? Let’s take a closer look.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Broadcom Ltd. (NASDAQ: AVGO) short interest fell to 3.97 million shares in the period, from the previous of 4.43 million. Shares closed most recently at $176.75, in a 52-week range of $114.25 to $179.42.

  • [By Lee Jackson]

Broadcom Ltd. (NASDAQ: AVGO) also had a huge seller on the trading desk last week. Silver Lake Partners sold a total of 385,797 shares of the supplier of semiconductor connectivity solutionsat a share price of $180.36. The total for the sale was a whopping $69,582,178. The consensus price target for the red-hot technology company is set at $211.68. The shares were trading at $181.94 as the week came to a close.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

Smartphone chip giant QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) stock is having its best run this year since the sell-off due to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other lawsuits at the beginning of the year. Qualcomm stock is almost 30% up in November. The take overbid by another semiconductor company Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has been the main driving force behind the reversal of fortunes for QCOM stock rather than a change in the fundamental story of the San Diego, California based company. Qualcomm board has rejected the $70 per share acquisition offer saying the bid is too low setting up for a proxy fight. The higher than usual volumes have been also vital for the stock’sustained uptrend. However, the upward surge in QCOM stock is beginning to cool off with the share price being almost flat over the past few days. The question now is, Can Qualcomm stock still climb higher from here? The answer to this could be partly found in the QCOM stock technical chart.

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they’re in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn’t much different than the real thing.
Banking and managing money isn’t what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking.
That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. (MITK), a San Diego-based technology company, debuted its Mobile Photo Account Opening product at Finovate, a trade show where banking tech products are often unveiled. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. If you have your bank’s app, you can use your smartphone’s camera to take a photo of the front and back of your driver’s license, and presto, your new checking, savings or credit card account is open.

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). Tony Tribble, Invision/AP
Forget about Bloomin’ Onions or boneless wings, for many consumers, the choice of where to dine often comes down to a different factor: which restaurant has the best booze.
“Alcoholic beverages can be a key driver of traffic, differentiation, and loyalty,” said David Decker, president of Consumer Edge Insight. According to the firm, two factors that keep customers coming back are “selection” and “pricing.”
Consumer Edge Insight recently surveyed restaurant customers to find out which casual-dining spots generated the most loyalty with their alcoholic beverages.
Taking the top spot for “selection” was Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), with 29 percent of those surveyed saying they were “most likely to visit it most often due to its good selection of alcoholic beverages.”
Applebee’s (DIN) took the second spot, with 24 percent, and Outback Steakhouse (BLMN) and T.G.I. Friday’s tied for third place with 22 percent each.
Prices also keep customers coming back to Buffalo Wild Wings.

When asked which casual-dining brand they were “most likely to visit most often due to its good prices of alcoholic beverages,” Buffalo Wild Wings came out on top with 30 percent. Chili’s (EAT) was No. 2 at 23 percent, and Ruby Tuesday (RT) was third with 22 percent.

Another tax-law provision gives favorable tax status to real-estate investment trusts. REITs make investments in real estate-related assets, and they’re required to pay out almost all their income to their shareholders annually.
Simon Property Group (SPG) is one of the biggest REITs, focusing on shopping malls and paying a 3 percent yield. But other specialty areas of the REIT universe pay much higher dividends, with REITs like Annaly Capital (NLY) that invest in mortgage-backed securities topping the list with double-digit percentage yields.

This development will likely give battered mREITs like Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) , Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) , and American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) a huge boost as investors begin to feel less panic regarding a tapering of the current QE3 program. Markets have responded to the Summers announcement by soaring skyward, apparently feeling relief and confidence about the fate of the taper.

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Watch For 2018: Cannabis Science, Inc. (CBIS)

When investors think of cannabinoid or marijuana stocks, they either think of better known stocks likeGW Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ: GWPH)and Zynerba Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: ZYNE) that trade on bigger exchanges orCannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) that are stilllisted on the OTC. Look out Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS:CBIS), and step aside Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS:MJNA). There’s a new cannabis name on the scene…. Algae Dynamics Corp. (OTCMKTS:ADYNF). It may not be known (or named) like its marijuana peers, but give it time. This small cap company has a very big idea, and it’s going to sprout soon.

Yes, Algae Dynamics is an algae company. It’s not just an algae company though.

Algae Dynamics is the owner of the proprietary BioSilo ™ process. BioSilo is a way of growing algae quickly and effectively…. a mix of an open-pond system and a photobioreactor, which is a light-driven approach to growing algae. It can be viewed as a “best of both worlds” approach, lowering the typical cost of algae farming, while the modular design makes it easy to maintain.

The company could go a lot of directions with the technology, Most of the tens of thousands of species of algae are rather flexible in how they can be purposed, and what they can become. Algae Dynamics is first focused on the development of two kinds of products though…. Chlorella, and Omega-3.

Chlorella is a type of microalgae that can be processed into a consumable powder by drying it until it takes a powder form, similar to coffee. Chlorella is rich in minerals, prebiotics, vitamins, and other nutritional substances. It can be added to a baked goods and a number of other products, or taken as a supplement on its own. Chlorella is used in over 1,000 products in the food and beverage markets. Algae Dynamics estimates the global Chlorella market was $210.3 million in 2014 and is expected to reach $265.5 million in 2018.

Despite a market for Chlorella in North America, there are no commercial North American producers of it.

Due to its health benefits, Omega-3 oil can be added to a very wide range of products. Consumers are increasingly aware of these benefits too, leading to substantial growth in the industry; health supplements compr

Middleby Corp.: Buy The Dip

Source: Bloomberg

Introduction

Middleby (NASDAQ:MIDD) reported earnings last week which caught most investors by surprise with the stock falling as much as 6% intraday. Reviewing the 10-Q and listening in on the earnings call show that while the business is poised for long-term growth, there are still short-term headwinds in its businesses which impacted growth and profits. I believe the pullback in the stock price deserves a review by investors. I believe that an entry point has been created and investors should consider getting into this name.

Q3 Earnings

In its third quarter, the company grew sales 3.3% YoY, and EPS came in at $1.31 vs. consensus of $1.33. In its commercial food service business, net sales grew 7% driven by acquisitions completed in the quarter. On an organic basis, the segment grew 0.9%. Its Food Processing Equipment segment grew 5.7%, but on an organic basis, sales decreased 4.4%. The Residential Kitchen Equipment Group declined 6% YoY on an organic basis. In my opinion, it is very easy to imagine that all is well when looking at just headline growth. Organic growth tells the story the company is going through right now – there are some weaknesses in some key markets.

On its Q3 earnings call, management highlighted that the decline in margins (38.5% in Q3 2017 vs. 40.4% in Q3 2016) was driven by the integration of recently acquired businesses which traditionally have lower margins than MIDD. This integration therefore reduced gross profit and margins. On a segment basis, margins in the Commercial Foodservice (driven by lower margins from recently acquired businesses) and Residential Kitchen Equipment decreased due to lower sales volume (driven by the ongoing impact from AGA restructuring and Viking recalls) and restructuring charges related to its distribution network.

While on the call, what surprised me was that management did not seem to be worried about the decline in margins (which is really what the Street seems to be concerned most about). In addition, management was very confident about its ability to convert its growing backlog into sales in the coming quarters. It seems to be playing a long game rather than a short one; hence, it gave no guidance for the coming quarters.

Management cited that a key reason for the hiccup was the issues with its distributors. As per the CEO, distributors were increasingly concerned that MIDD tried to cut them out by acquiring Qualserv. Besides this MIDD would have beat on earnings this quarter.

Viking Lag Just Doesn’t Seem To Go Away

Sales in the Residential Kitchen Equipment continued to falter in Q3 (down 6% YoY). The main reason for this continues to be driven by the product recalls with the Viking brands which began when Viking was under its previous owners. According to management, this is likely to continue into Q2 of 2018. Interestingly, it highlighted that new products unveiled under current management have received positive reviews from customers and its sales team. This segment continues to remain important as its products in this space tend to be high margin with equipment being priced on the higher end of the market.

Discounting

One key thing that occurred on the call was when the topic of discounting was brought up. Management cited that a customer that was shared among equipment manufacturers was lost in the quarter. Apparently, when it went to bid, MIDD’s product came out superior to other bidders, but the company lost the bid because of its high price point. When asked whether or not it would ever discount its products to make them more competitive, management seemed to fret and highlighted that it is more focused on offering superior products to customers and would like to maintain the strong margin profile. Also, management mentioned that this issue of discounting usually comes and goes. This could pose a risk for margins going forward should it remain. Should competitors continue to discount key products (especially in the Commercial Foodservice equipment space), MIDD’s margins would come under pressure as it is likely to lose customers (as was the case this quarter) and may be forced to lower the price point to become more competitive.

Why Should Investors Consider MIDD? Growing pipeline of equipment sales in commercial food service. Low debt levels (1.64x Net Debt/EBITDA) to continue funding inorganic growth. The restaurant industry has been going through some headwinds. Incumbent restaurant chains have seen foot traffic decline due to changing tastes and the rise of fast casual restaurants in recent years. Surprisingly, some fast-casual restaurants have been in decline in recent quarters. According to MIDD’s management, there is increasing need for chains to reinvent themselves, and this has come in the form of investing in superior and technologically advanced kitchen equipment. This should serve as a tailwind for MIDD in the long term. Management continues to make incremental investments to turn around the decline in the residential kitchen equipment segment. The declines come from the Viking product recalls that affected products launched under previous ownership. New Viking products launched under current management have received strong reviews from sales team and customers. The story management has been selling to investors is that while investments are being made in mobile, companies need to reinvent themselves by investing in modern kitchen equipment. According to CEO Selim Bassoul, a chain can invest all it wants in technology but the food still has to be great. This is where Middleby’s value proposition is. Valuation Discounted Cash Flow Analysis

My DCF base case assumes price target of $128.70 (a 16.84% premium to current trading levels). This is driven by modest growth in the Commercial Foodservice segment driven by increased investment by in kitchen equipment by major food chains. A slight increase in sales in the residential kitchen equipment as per management guidance. Important to note that none of my assumptions assume acquisitions which the company embarks on to also drive growth.

On a Forward P/E basis, assuming a median multiple of 22.8x, MIDD could trade at $129.5/share (a 17.1% premium to current levels). On a forward EV/EBITDA basis, MIDD could trade as high as $141.7 (a 28% premium) assuming a median peer multiple of 14.2x.

Conclusion

I have been long this stock for a couple of months now and I still am. The investment positives are still there, but the risks remain. However, given the upside that is likely in the long term, the risk at this point is worth the reward. This is a company that has achieved above-average growth (organic and inorganic) and margins in addition to delivering on its long-term targets. Given the recent pullback in the stock price and multiple, investors should add MIDD to their portfolio.
