Looking at recent historical deals, we arrive at a $18-$23 potential deal range. We analyzed transactions that have been announced over the past four years and involved companies catering to a higher income customer. These deals include Southern Tide (acquired by Oxford Industries (OXM)), Joe’s Jeans (acquired by Sequential Brands Group (SQBG)), prAna (acquired by Columbia Sportswear (COLM)), The Jones Group (acquired by Sycamore Partners [private] and Juicy Couture (acquired by Authentic Brands Group [private]). The average EV/EBITDA multiple of these transactions are 12.9x (in line with KATE’s 5-year historical average of 12.1x) and implies a potential deal range of $22-$23. The deal still needs approval from regulators, but there are fewer potential objections than the attempted tie-up between Aetna and Humana (NYSE: HUM), two insurers. While CVS does manage some drug-benefits plans for employers and insurers through its PBM, the merger wouldn’t create less competition in one particular segment of the industry like the insurance market.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The Wall Street Journal reported that government regulators are pushing back against Anthem’s (ANTM) purchase of Cigna (CI). California, however, seems to have few issues with the proposed combination of Aetna (AET) andHumana (HUM). Leerink’s Ana Gupte explains:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Humana (HUM) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after the Republican Congress put forward a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

    S. MARTIN/AFP/Getty Images

    Humana gained 2.4% to $217.76 today, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.3% to 2,368.38.

Why was Humana the best performing stock in the S&P 500? Beats the heck out of me, since what a final plan will look like is still up in the air. Strategas Research Partners’ Daniel Clifton and team explain:

Handwringing about what this bill achieves or not is at a fevered pitch this morning. Our guess is that the final legislation will look quite different than the original draft as was the case eight years ago when the Democrats released their ACA draft and spent the next 12 months fighting over the details. There is a wide chasm of views between conservative House Republicans and moderate Republican Senators. Support is going to be needed from each group to win passage. The most logical complaint is that this is one entitlement program being replaced with another. But how ironic would it be if the Tea Party, which came to fruition in response to the ACA, actually becomes the barrier to reforming the law. Supporters of the ACA and investors in healthcare service companies will be focused on the number of covered lives. There is no doubt that a reformed Medicaid system (to get costs down) and less generous tax credits will lead to fewer covered lives. How much of a difference will be open to interpretation as policymakers await the CBO score.

Humana’s market capitalization rose to $32.5 billion today from $31.8 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $614 million on sales of $54.4 billion in 2016.

With bitcoin soaring through $5,500 and beyond, you'd be forgiven – if you haven't bought any yet – for thinking you've missed the boat… that the opportunity has slipped through your fingers.   Relax. The opportunity is still there. But it's meaningless if you don't take any action to seize it…   Bitcoin works a little differently than the investments you might be used to. Today, I'll share three simple things you need to know before you get started.

1. Start small.

Speaking from personal experience, I highly recommend that folks looking to buy some bitcoins start with an extremely small amount… no more than a single bitcoin's worth. (You can use less money and buy a fraction of a bitcoin, if you prefer.)

penny stock finder: LaSalle Hotel Properties(LHO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Marshall Hargrave]

The other key benefit for Strategic is that it enjoys industry-leading earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) per available room. For 2012, Strategic generated $81 per room of EBITDA. Compare this to top comps LaSalle Hotel (NYSE: LHO) at $74 per room and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) at $71. The reason for this is that Strategic is much less reliant than its peers on rooms, with much greater exposure to food and beverages. Strategic earns 53% of its revenue from rooms, while its peers get around 66% of revenues from rooms.

penny stock finder: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo, Tyler Crowe, and Jason Hall]

Oil prices haven’t gotten off to the fast start many expected, falling around 6% on average during the first quarter of the year. That slump came despite OPEC’s best efforts since producing nations have achieved fairly good compliance on their planned output cuts. That said, despite the lackluster oil market, we still see some interestingopportunities in the oil market. Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

  • [By Chris Dier-Scalise]

Among the brands being sold were Alcoa Corporation (NYSE: AA) and Ford Motor Company(NYSE: F), which both paid out dividends in December. The financial and oil sectors also experienced a sell-off to finish 2016. Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE: WFC) and Citigroup Inc (NYSE: C) were net sold as each reached new year-to-date highs and investors unloaded ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) and Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) as their prices normalized with the rise in the price of oil.

Phillips 66 is a multi-national company headquartered in Westchase, Houston. It was spun off from ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) in 1917.

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

Spun off from energy producer ConocoPhillips (COP) a few years back, PSX has quickly become one of the downstream industrys biggest players. Refiners earn profits based on the difference between feed stock costs (Think oil and natural gas prices) and the price for refined products such as gasoline, jet fuel and heating oil. Those inputs remain low, and Phillips 66 is minting cash as a result.

After a massive 8.7% rally since July 7, gold prices were due for some weakness. That weakness finally arrived last week, as prices dropped 1.9% between Friday, Sept. 8, and Friday, Sept. 15.

Fortunately, I had been warning investors that we should expect a pullback…

You see, the rally from Aug. 22 into Friday, Sept. 8, took the price of gold from $1,291 all the way to $1,351. That’s a massive 4.6% gain in just over two weeks.

I said those gains had to be digested. I also pointed out that the U.S. dollar had sold off too far, with the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) falling to a 32-month low of 91.35 on Sept. 8. Since it had become technically oversold, we were due for some sort of near-term bounce, and now the DXY is back up to 91.88 today (Monday, Sept. 18).

Both the DXY rebound and gold price correction are still running their course. I think we could see more consolidation, or even a bit more weakness, for the gold price in the interim.

Hot Casino Stocks To Own For 2018

Elliott R. Morss Ph.D. 漏All Rights Reserved

Introduction

Politicians in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island have put aside moral and/or addiction concerns over gambling. Instead, they recently asked why all the gambling dollars from their citizens go to the casinos (and governments) in Connecticut and New Jersey. They responded by approving for new gaming facilities in all three states. Below, data on these actions is presented with commentary.

The Current Situation

Table 1 provides gambling revenues and how they have changed since 2007 for northeast US states, with California, Nevada and Macau included as points of reference. The growth in Macau has been truly amazing. And additional facilities continue to be built there. However, as noted in an earlier piece, Japan has just approved a number of new integrated resort casinos. And these can be expected to siphon off some of the gambling from Macau, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia.

Gambling revenues in Nevada, New Jersey, and Connecticut have not recovered from the 2008 global recession caused by the US banking collapse.

  • [By Darren Williams] Although the entire cannabis space has quietly taken a hit of their own medicine in recent weeks and gone to sleep, don’t think for one second the entire space isn’t going to light up again soon. That’s just what they do, right? However, knowing who the pretenders are and knowing who the contenders are is really the challenge when it’s comes right down to it.
First, anyone who claims to be a grower or a seller of cannabis can’t for one second ever make it as a public company right now, or can even legally consider being a public company for that matter, so you can scratch any of those right off your list. At least here in the U.S. anyway, because Canada is already well ahead of the curve having legalized it for medicinal purposes already.
More importantly, full legalization of marijuana in Canada appears to be on track for July 2018, which will make Canada just the second nation in the world after Uruguay to completely legalize the cultivation, sale and possession of the drug for medical and recreational purposes.
Regardless, the best time to buy any stocks in a hot growth sector is when either everyone has forgotten about them, or when the overall market landscape has turned bearish, which has yet to happen. However, the former seems to be the case for the cannabis space, despite some very favorable state legislation last Fall.
For now, as long as you have a license issued by Health Canada, you’re good to go, so there are some stocks trading in Canada already who are well on their way to making some green for investors. Canopy Growth Corporation (TSE: WEED), formerly Tweed Marijuana Inc., is a medical marijuana company based in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Aurora Cannabis Inc. (CVE: ACB), which is engaged in the production and sale of medical cannabis.
