Top 10 Safest Stocks To Watch Right Now

Seadrill Ltd (NYSE:SDRL) is deep into penny-stock land these days. A low-priced stock is often a bad investment. Just because it’s cheap, doesn’t mean it’s a bargain. Too often, while there can be huge gains in penny stocks, the risks are huge, as well. Given its recent problems, SDRL stock is not what it once was.

Seadrill used to be a high-flying company. Its shares traded in the double digits, offered a 10%-plus dividend yield, and appeared to be run by a brilliant manager. That perception has now changed.

Regardless of its past merits, the company has fallen on hard times. Its subsidiaries, such as North Atlantic Drilling Ltd. (NYSE:NADL), have lost virtually all their value. Drilling activity has declined sharply as the price of oil has remained persistently low. And now, even Seadrill looks to be facing a real risk of bankruptcy.

Trading for less than 50 cents a share, investors have to ask: Is SDRL stock a bargain here, or is it likely heading all the way to zero?

Best Performing Stocks To Watch For 2018

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN), a drug maker focused on rare diseases, ended Thursday at the top of the list of the best performing stocks in the S&P 500 index.

The shares climbed almost 3.3%, or $3.78, to close at $118.35, compared to the S&P 500, which fell almost 16 points, or 0.7% to end at 2,328.95.

Its been a rough two years for Alexion. Since mid-2015, when the stock traded above $200, shares have tumbled on worries about the durability of its main drug Soliris, political furor over high drug prices, and the abrupt departure of two top executives amid an investigation into sales practices.

The shares are down more than 3% since the start of 2017.

Solaris sales will be a focus next week when Alexion reports first quarter financial results. Earlier today, Barclays reiterated an overweight rating on the stock and a $115 price target, but raised its 2018 and 2019 earnings estimates, arguing that rivals are unlikely to significantly challenge either Solaris or the experimental drug ALXN1210.

In actuality, we think the reverse is true for several reasons. We believe that there is a higher level of investor neglect in the small cap space, and neglect, in an investment sense, creates valuation discounts from fair value. Small cap names are less well-known and understood. For example, most of you have never heard of Cubic Corporation (NYSE:CUB), but you have likely used the public transportation systems in New York, London, Sydney, etc. that rely on Cubic for fare collection services. Likewise, Multi-Color is a confusing name for the second largest label maker in the world. To understand these businesses, investors need to dig a little deeper with active fundamental research – a Third Avenue strength.
