Vista Outdoor is suffering a double-digit stock price plunge after the gun and ammo maker reported a slide in sales and profit since the presidential election.

The stock price dropped more than 20% on Thursday after Vista Outdoor (VSTO) reported a 5% drop in quarterly sales.

“Given the magnitude of today’s sell-off of shares of Vista Outdoor, it appears the investment community was quite surprised by management commentary regarding the deteriorating conditions in the overall shooting sports market in recent weeks,” said Rommel Dionisio, gun industry analyst for Wunderlich Securities.

Vista Outdoor of Farmington, Utah, owns dozens of brands including AR-15 maker Savage Arms and the ammo makers CCI, Blazer, Estate Cartridge, American Eagle and Federal Premium Ammunition. The company also owns non-gun brands favored by outdoor enthusiasts, like CamelBak, and various scope companies including Bushnell.

Dionisio said the company reported “elevated inventory levels” from “inflated ordering prior to the presidential election,” fearing that Democrat Hillary Clinton would win and seek tougher gun control laws.

IBM dropped, while the S&P 500 declined 0.2% to 2,338.17.

Barclays analysts Mark Moskowitz and Daniel Gaide contend that IBM’s earnings “suggest [a] turnaround might be elusive.” They explain why:

The major Y/Y deterioration in gross margin, and IBMs dependence on discrete items to pad EPS, stand to frustrate investors. We highlighted last week that the stocks rally could come to an end as it is time to show progress on the turnaround. 1Q results did not deliver much progress and could signal that investors might have given IBM too much credit to deliver on its ambitious turnaround built around the cloud and cognitive. We recommend investors stay on the sideline.

Since August 2010, the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES:^DJI) have risen from below 10,000 to within a fraction of a point of 20,000. Doubling in just over six years is an impressive feat, especially given that the Dow also pays a respectable dividend yield of more than 2% on top of its rise. Yet although all 30 stocks that are currently in the Dow have risen over that period, some haven’t done nearly as well as the overall average. In particular, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), IBM (NYSE:IBM), and Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) have underperformed the Dow since 2010. Let’s look more closely at these stocks and whether they can start pulling more of their weight in 2017 and beyond.

Providing good contact center service for annuity holders is more difficult today than it used to be 22 years ago.

Brendan Yeager, a service quality specialist at Dalbar, gave that assessment Thursday, in an annuity service award announcement put out by Dalbar.

Forget the pundits—they totally blew the call on this election. And I sure hope you didn’t take their stock advice, either.

Ahead of the vote, one economics professor said the market would drop 7% if Trump won. Another analyst said you should go to cash “if you’re not already there.”

I could go on.

If you followed that advice, you’ve missed a 2.1% rise in the S&P 500 since Election Day. It’s worse if you were overweight financials, as the sector has been on an absolute tear, with the iShares US Financials ETF (IYF) surging 7.0%.

Sad!

But not surprising, as banks will benefit most from higher interest rates—and a selloff in the bond market has pushed the yield on the 10-year Treasury to around 2.25% from 1.87% on November 8.

stock earnings: Mallinckrodt plc(MNK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Mallinckrodt (MNK) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after its earnings topped the Street consensus but offered commentary that spooked investors.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Shares of Mallinckrodt dropped 9.1% to $52.42, while the S&P 500 rose 0.1%.

Barclays analyst Douglas Tsao and Morgan Williams callMallinckrodt’s plunge “outsized.” They explain why:

In our view the sell-off afterMallinckrodt reported CY3Q16 earnings is outsized considering much of the disclosure on the call was largely expected, including specialty generics weakness and the 2017 outlook, which seemed relatively mild. While outsized Acthar contribution to EBITDA may be accounting for some of the sell-off, wed argue that there is benefit to the brand outperforming, especially considering the need to offset Therakos production issues in CY4Q16 and CY1Q17 as well as specialty generics weakness. We recognize some lingering headline risk associated with media reports criticizing the cost of Acthar to Medicare, after CMS released its prescription drug spending dashboard.

Mallinckrodt’s market capitalization fell to $5.7 billion today from $6.2 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $306 million on revenue of $3.3 billion in 2015.

This marks the third time in less than two weeks that Mallinckrodt was the S&P 500′s biggest loser.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Mallinckrodt plc (NYSE: MNK) dropped 39% Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $19.01 after closing at $31.18 on Monday. The 52-week high is $68.12. Volume was around 32 million, about 16 times the daily average of about 2 million. The generic drug maker missed analysts revenue estimate.

The days shopping tax-free with Amazon are coming to an end.

On Saturday Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) will start collecting sales taxes on purchases in the last four states where it wasn’t doing so: Hawaii, Idaho, Maine and New Mexico. Four other states — Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — have no sales tax, while a fifth, Alaska, doesn’t have a statewide tax, but it does have municipal sales taxes.

Typically, an online retailer only has to collect sales tax in states where they have a physical presence, such as a storefront or a distribution center. That loophole cost states $17.2 billion in lost sales taxes last year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

“The way we are consuming things is so different. Because of that, the states’ sales tax revenue is not keeping pace,” said Max Behlke, director of budget and tax policy for the NCSL. “States have to modernize [sales taxes] to the 21st century. If they can’t collect sales taxes, it’ll mean higher state income taxes or property taxes.”

Best Heal Care Stocks To Invest In 2018: Pound/Rand(PX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The last twelve months haven’t been kind to Praxair (PX) and Air Products & Chemicals (APD), but UBS analyst John Roberts and team argue that’s about to change, as they upgrade their shares to Buy from Neutral arguing that their earnings can withstand a slowing global economy:

In our view, the two stocks are more alike than different. NTM P/Es are within ~0.5 pts of each other. Both stocks have declined ~20% from their historical highs the largest corrections in 20+ years aside from the financial crisis…

Industrial gas stocks have normally grown through changes in FX, oil & China demand within normal historical ranges. And investor concerns around China forAir Products & Chemicals may still prove much bigger than reality. Nevertheless, the combination of FX & oil sector impacts on Praxair, and FX & China issues for Air Products & Chemicals, have been much larger than previously seen. With oil already down, the dollar already appreciated, & China concerns already heightened we believe forward basis would appear to carry only normal risks (& lower if FX & oil are mean-reverting, which some theories support).

Normal high single digit EPS growth projected for both in 2017 vs 2016: Four large firms serve 70%+ of the global merchant gas market, and price normally contributes ~2% to growth. Customer older captive units being outsourced contributes another 2%. Secular drivers for oxygen include energy savings (i.e. O2 burns more efficiently than air), life sciences (healthcare & microbial processes) nitrogen secular drivers include increasing purity requirements (food freezing & semiconductors). Topline growth ~2x global GDP more normal, with EPS growth ~2x sales growth due to high fixed costs (key variable costs are inexpensive air & power).

Financial crisis demand drop was only a few %, in line with global GDP drop Most chemicals volumes dropped 10%+ (some 40%

Best Heal Care Stocks To Invest In 2018: LinkedIn Corporation(LNKD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Andres Cardenal]

The most powerful investment ideas are the ones that can be easily explained and understood. LinkedIn(LNKD) is an undisputed market leader in remarkably promising areas such as professional networking and online employment opportunities, and this makes the company a top name to buy in 2016 and hold for years to come.

As of the third quarter of 2015, LinkedIn(LNKD) had 396 million registered members around the world, a big increase of 20% versus the same quarter the previous year, and 39,726 corporate solutions customers on the platform, a year-over-year increase of 31%. Individuals and corporations attract each other to LinkedIn in search of opportunities, and this creates a virtuous cycle driving sustainable growth over the long term.

Management is also translating the company’s massive opportunities into rapid revenue growth. Total sales grew 37% to $780 million last quarter, with the acquisition of online learning platform lynda.com representing $41 million of that. LinkedIn’s three growth engines are firing on all cylinders: Talent solutions for corporations grew 46%, while premium subscription sales increased 21%, and online advertising revenue jumped 28%.

LinkedIn(LNKD) is actively investing for growth, so profit margins are hard to predict in the short term. However, the company should be able to combine solid revenue growth and expanding profit margins in the years ahead.

  • [By Alex McGuire]

For example, LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE: LNKD) fell 16.1% to $79.03 from its IPO date on May 19, 2011, to Aug. 19, 2011. But LNKD stock has since recovered 148% to today’s share price of $195.96.
