Best High Tech Stocks To Own For 2018

Mr. Market May Be Creating Opportunities in Retail

Mr. Market was at it again today (August 2, 2017) sending the retail industry down (-1.28%) in his pessimism while leaving the star pupil Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) unchanged. One historically profitable company that has been caught up in the mess is Big 5 Sporting Goods Corporation (BGFV), which fell 7.8% on the day and was even down 17.5% at one point.

This fall was despite the company posting Q2 FY17 same store sales growth of 0.8% and total sales growth of 1.0% which allowed diluted EPS to grow from $0.10 to $0.13 when compared to the same quarter last year. On the other hand, as stated in the Q2 FY17 conference call, the quarter did not live up to management’s expectations, SG&A expense as an percent of sales rose 0.5%, and management guided that Q3 same store sales growth would be negative in the low single digits. However, in my opinion the sell off was too much as the slide has now left BGFV, a company with not one earnings deficit in the past 10 years, trading at a 10.3x TTM earnings and yielding 5.9% based on a $0.15 quarterly dividend rate.

If this collaboration is successful, it could be very bad news for Intel.

Hey, Walmart (WMT) , want to shake up a sector just as Amazon (AMZN) did last month when it announced its bid for Whole Foods Market Inc. (WFM) ?

Then make a bold move that will enhance your reach, pump up your brand and widen your footprint with a fresh group of shoppers.

What do ExxonMobil (XOM), General Electric (GE) and Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) have in common? Not much if you ask me. But ask Oppenheimer technical analyst Ari Wald, and he believes he’s discovered links the three mega-cap stocks, each of which has underperformed the S&P 500 so far this year. His theory: “Mega-cap safety is the central theme linking stocks that are nearing decade-long relative lows.”

Retailers Take Center Stage: It’s “Black Friday,” meaning attention might turn to retailers like Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT), Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE: BBY), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT), among others. Retail sales kicked up in October, and Halloween sales also looked pretty solid, which could point toward a strong winter holiday shopping season. Job growth has also been relatively healthy of late, another factor that could play into holiday sales. Jobless claims stayed below 300,000 last week for the 90th-consecutive week, the longest stretch in more than 45 years. We’ll get further insight on the jobs climate at the end of next week when November Non-farm payrolls data roll in, and that could provide more clues as to just how well-equipped consumers might be for those shopping expeditions.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Watch For 2018: athenahealth, Inc.(ATHN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Meanwhile, earnings season continued to play out, and although the technology industry saw some extremely encouraging reports, not all stocks participated in the rally. Athenahealth (NASDAQ:ATHN), Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), and Time (NYSE:TIME) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Shares of Athena Health (ATHN) are up 37% in just over a month. Is there still more room to run?

Cramer said for years Athena had been a fast-growing stock, but as the company transitioned from growth to profitability, things began to get ugly. The company’s bombastic CEO, and his “colorful” personality began to rub shareholders the wrong way.

  • [By ]

Under a single-payer system, healthcare becomes a regulated utility much like electricity with just a few large, best-in-class players. Athenahealth (Nasdaq: ATHN) could combine with Walgreen Boots Alliance (NYSE: WBA). Maybe each monolith will cover a specific region like Southern Company (NYSE: SO) and Consolidated Edison (NYSE: ED).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Athenahealth (ATHN) last night announced that its CFO and administrative chief, Kristi Matus, would be leaving the company. Her departure has not been embraced by investors, who have pushed shares lower today. Leerink’s David Larsen understands their concerns:

In our view, the CFO departure may be indicative of internal operational challenges. We still think it is possible that Kristi Matus is seeking an environment that is not as demanding as ATHN, though this has not been confirmed by management. Management harped on the point that bifurcation is part of the strategic initiative of ATHN to reenergize the culture of the company, and Jonathan Bush noted how he himself hopes to spend more time on talent and culture and less time on entering new markets and building new products.

We continue to believe that ATHN is facing challenges. We continue to believe the market is fundamentally slowing and bookings growth may become more lumpy as we progress through 2016. We still believe there will be a slow-down in the bookings growth rate b/c of a possible slow-down in the ambulatory EMR market and the fact that we are in the final payment year of Meaningful Use. Much of the call focused on Kristi Matus’s departure as a major loss for the company of a leader who was “masterful with investors.” According to management, the decision to split the CFO and CFAO responsibilities was not a reflection of her ability.

Baird’s Matthew Gillmor and Sean McBride are less worried:

The unexpected resignation of CFO Kristi Matus is disappointing, but the reasons for her departure seem somewhat understandable, in our view (potentially viewed bifurcation of CFO/CAO role as a demotion). We think incoming CFO Karl Stubelis is very strong and should provide helpful continuity, both internally and externally (currently serves as Controller and previously as acting CFO). Finally, the CFO change does not change our positive long-term thesi

recommended stocks to buy: Atkore International Group Inc. (ATKR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.

recommended stocks to buy: Nustar Energy L.P.(NS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One technology player that insiders are active in here is Jive Software (NS), which provides a social business software platform to businesses, government agencies, and other enterprises. Insiders are buying this stock into massive weakness, since shares are down sharply by 43% so far in 2014.

Jive Software has a market cap of $446 million and an enterprise value of $365 million. This stock trades at a fair valuation, with a price-to-sales of 2.68 and a price-to-book of 5.67. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 45.5%, and for next year it’s pegged at 30%. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $98.18 million and its total debt is $6.60 million.

A director just bought 260,819 shares, or about $1.71 million worth of stock, at $6.53 to $6.60 per share.

From a technical perspective, JIVE is currently trending just above its 50-day moving average and below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock recently pulled back off its short-term high of $7.14 a share with heavy downside volume flows. That drop has now pushed the stock to right above its 50-day moving average at $6.10 a share.

If you’re bullish on JIVE, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its 50-day at $6.10 a share and then once it breaks out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.14 a share to its 200-day moving average of $7.43 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 557,678 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then JIVE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $8.50 to $9 a share, or even $9.50 to $10 a share.

Heisenberg is no stranger to volatility (NYSEARCA:VXX). Just ask anyone who’s known him. Oh wait, you can’t. I’m anonymous, wear dark shades and a hat and dwell in dark, smokey corners of the bar.

Oh well, take my word for it.

I know something about volatility. It comes and it goes. People think “hey, he’s an ok guy,” and then two days later it’s like “oh no, this might have been a really bad idea.”

But as ridiculous as it sounds, I try to take lessons about the market from all of my own experiences. Good and bad. That’s not some empty platitude. The market is people or at least machines run by people (or maybe it’s the other way around). Doesn’t matter. Point is there are people involved in there somewhere although there may not be in 20 years and anytime there’s a human element embedded in a system, you can learn something about that system by analyzing yourself.

Now think about this. We all conceptualize volatility as inherently bad. Well, maybe not all of us, but if you’re not a skilled trader and are merely hanging out in a vol ETN hoping to guess right on a given day, you should give it up and acknowledge that when vol spikes, your plain vanilla portfolio is probably down.

The stock market kept performing well on Monday, and the Dow Jones Industrials posted its 12th straight all-time record high. Market sentiment was sunny following the release of Warren Buffett’s annual shareholder letter over the weekend, and the Oracle of Omaha made positive comments about the sustainability of the current bull market, which was able to overcome early declines in the major market benchmarks. However, some stocks didn’t fare as well as the overall market, and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), AmTrust Financial Services (NASDAQ:AFSI), and Horizon Pharma (NASDAQ:HZNP) were among the worst performers on the day. stock market terms

Peter Krauth

After a massive 8.7% rally since July 7, gold prices were due for some weakness. That weakness finally arrived last week, as prices dropped 1.9% between Friday, Sept. 8, and Friday, Sept. 15.

Fortunately, I had been warning investors that we should expect a pullback…

You see, the rally from Aug. 22 into Friday, Sept. 8, took the price of gold from $1,291 all the way to $1,351. That’s a massive 4.6% gain in just over two weeks.

I said those gains had to be digested. I also pointed out that the U.S. dollar had sold off too far, with the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) falling to a 32-month low of 91.35 on Sept. 8. Since it had become technically oversold, we were due for some sort of near-term bounce, and now the DXY is back up to 91.88 today (Monday, Sept. 18).

Both the DXY rebound and gold price correction are still running their course. I think we could see more consolidation, or even a bit more weakness, for the gold price in the interim.

The first thing to understand about Energen (NYSE:EGN) it has the capability and will to increase production steadily over the next three years, even if oil were to remain at about $50 per barrel. As it stands, the company believes should be able to double output by the end of 2019.

By the end of 2017 the company guides for production jump to about 65.7 MBOE per day, and by 2019 to reach 100,000 BOE per day. In 4Q16, production was at 53.5 MBOE per day.

When considering the implications of the recent well completion of EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG), suggesting resource and reserves in the play could be much higher than believed – of which Energen has a lot of exposure – the long-term outlook for the company appears to be even better than it already was.

Heres what you need to know about all four:

  • [By Paul Ausick]

OSI Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OSIS) dropped 36% Wednesday to post a new 52-week low of $53.80 after closing at $84.07 on Tuesday. The 52-week high is $96.64. Volume was around 9 million, around 6 times the daily average of about 155,000. Short seller Muddy Waters called OSI “rotten to the core” in a new report this morning.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Look out OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS), and step aside American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI). You may be the key names in weapons detection and security screening right now, but an up-and-comer called Patriot One Technologies Inc. (CVE:PAT, OTCMKTS:PTOTF) is about to unleash a rival product that turns heads, and steals your customers.

Weapons detection tools in a world that’s always got terrorism threats lurking around every corner are no laughing matter, though were it any other subject, the results would be laughable. See, as advanced as the x-ray and screening products made by American Science & Engineering and OSI Systems may be, they just don’t work well enough.

Case in point: A recent internal investigation performed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) found that undercover investigators were able to smuggle fake explosives and weapons through checkpoints in 95% of trials, which they conducted at dozens of America’s busiest airports. What’s the point?

For the past several years Patriot One Technologies has been working on a technology, called the CMR1000, that changes everything.

The CMR1000 (‘CMR’ is an short for Cognitive Microwave Radar) is an amazing device. It works not unlike a X-ray machine at an airport, but also not unlike a more conventional metal detector you might find at an airport or at the entryway to a building. In all regards though, it’s better than both. By using high-frequency microwaves that are harmless to humans, the CMR1000 can even pinpoint exactly what kind of metallic weapon it is… a semi-automatic pistol versus a revolver, or a machete versus a pocket knife. Most important, the CMR1000 boasts a (very) high detection-accuracy rate of 93%.

And it’s almost ready… ready enough to officially unveil this April at the ISC West (International Security Conference) in Las Vegas, and immediately begin taking orders for initial deliveries around the middle of

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

If shareholders of OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS) and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) — makers of weapons detection systems — are getting a little nervous, that’s understandable. Never has either company’s share of the market been so threatened. Indeed, an up-and-coming company called Patriot One Technologies Inc. (CVE:PAT, OTCMKTS:PTOTF) fired another volley at American Science & Engineering and OSI Systems, announcing yet-another institution had asked for a real-life demonstration (on their premises) of the brand-new kind of anti-terrorism technology that Patriot One’s been developing for years.

The CMR1000 (‘CMR’ is an short for Cognitive Microwave Radar) is nothing less than incredible.

This capability overcomes the key shortcoming of most threat-detection apparatus in use today…

… which doesn’t work very well, by the way. A recent internal investigation performed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) found that undercover investigators were able to smuggle fake explosives and weapons through checkpoints in 95% of trials, which they conducted at dozens of America’s busiest airports.

Patriot One Technologies is mostly excited about the launch of the CMR1000, however, because it’s not a mere threat-detection tool. Word will quickly spread that it’s a threat-deterrent tool; the easiest way combat violent action is not letting it happen in the first place, and the best way to do that to accurately find and accurately identify what the threat is, right down to

GlaxoSmithKline’s Advair lost patent protection more than six years ago, but only within the past couple of years did the FDA lay out a course for generic drug producers to follow in order to get a generic version of the drug approved. Over the course of its history, America has developed and maintained a good (if not ideal) cocktail of free markets and government, with each institution deployed in areas of society in which it excels.  It deploys free markets in allocating economic resources toward the production of private goods and services, and government in creating a “general equality of condition among the people,” as graphically described in Alexis De Tocqueville Democracy in America.

The government protects civil liberties and economic freedoms, and takes care of the “commons,” sectors of the economy where free markets are inadequate or fail altogether: the provision of public and semi-public goods, and the protection of the public from health, traffic, occupational, and environmental hazards.

The numbers are nearly unfathomable…   25 trillion gallons of water… That's roughly how much rain Hurricane Harvey dumped on the Houston area in fewer than five days.   And the 51.88 inches of rainfall measured outside the city is the most ever recorded from a single storm in the continental U.S., according to the National Weather Service.   This is more rain than typically falls in six months there… and enough water to supply New York City for more than 50 years, according to ABC News. More than 40 people have died as a result of the storm, and at least another 30,000 have been forced from their homes.   While the worst of the rainfall has passed, flooding is expected to continue for weeks – even months, in some areas. Some estimates suggest the damage could total as much as $190 billion. That would rank it as the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. history by far.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Last year at this time, we said we can only hope for a bit more growth, and at least bottoming for many of those stubborn energy/commodity/industrial end markets, less FX headwind, pricing support and cost reduction plus smart capital deployment, be it M&A, Capex, and/or buybacks/dividends that might actually lead to stock outperformance. In fact, we did get a bit more growth and many of the stubborn end markets appear to have bottomed, while most of those other items also did play out. The stocks under our coverage outperformed the S&P (which was up >10% itself) by more than 14% on average, led byIngersoll-Rand (+37%),Rockwell Automation (+31%),Eaton (+30%) and Fortive (FTV) (+26%) with Allegion (ALLE) (-2%) andGeneral Electric (+2%) the worst performing.

I won’t keep you in suspense — Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) owns 400,000,000 shares of Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), worth a total of $16.7 billion as of this writing. This translates to a 9.4% stake in the beverage giant, and makes Coca-Cola Buffett’s third-largest stock investment.

The investment has served Buffett and Berkshire’s shareholders well. Of the Coca-Cola stake’s market value, more than $15.4 billion represents profit. The $560 million in dividends it will receive this year from Coca-Cola represents nearly half of what Buffett paid for the shares in the first place. Here’s why Buffett likes Coca-Cola so much, and whether you should consider joining him in the investment.

Why does Buffett like Coca-Cola so much?

Coca-Cola is a longtime favorite stock of the Oracle of Omaha. Not only is Coca-Cola one of only two major stock positions Berkshire has held for more than 25 years (the other is Wells Fargo), but it’s consistently been among Berkshire’s top holdings. In fact, 25 years ago, Coca-Cola was the largest stock holding in Berkshire’s portfolio.

stockmarketquotes

Bank stocks performed tremendously well in 2016, but there could still be more upside in the years ahead. If you’re thinking of adding a bank stock or two to your portfolio as we head into 2017, here are three you may want to consider.

Bank stocks had a great 2016

The financial sector was one of 2016’s best performers, up 20% for the year, which was about double the gain of the S&P 500.

XLF data by YCharts

If you take a closer look at the chart, you’ll notice that financial sector underperformed the S&P for most of the year. Most of the gains took place over the last two months — specifically, after the election.

In a nutshell, the market thinks the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States, as well as a Republican majority in the House and Senate, could be the magic formula to catapult bank profits higher. Rising interest rates would translate into higher profit margins, deregulation could lower ongoing costs and make it easier for banks to do business, and Trump’s job and wage growth plans could produce more demand for banking services.

stockmarketquotes: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SSNLF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Throughout the past few quarters, WidePoint has seen quiet a few changes from the top. Since last November, the company has had 3 CEOs. Starting mid-2015 and into late 2016, under the leadership of former CEO Steve Komar, investors have been hearing about exciting contracts and partnerships with big names like Samsung (OTC:SSNLF), AT&T (NYSE:T), Kyocera (NYSE:KYO), etc. At the time, the future of WidePoint looked like it was about to turn bright very soon. Even Nokomis, now its biggest institutional shareholder, has bought into the hype and started buying the stock hand over fist. However, unfortunately, that coincided with heavy selling of the stock as a result of it being dropped form the PureFunds ISE Cyber Security ETF (NYSEARCA:HACK).

A long term performance chart shows the performance of mid cap BlackBerry Ltd finally taking off whilethe performance of Samsung Electronics (OTCMKTS: SSNLF) and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) have beenrising since last year:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

That’s all, folks: After asking carriers to stop sales amid several reports of replacement Note 7 devices bursting into flames, Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) is now halting production of the phone altogether. That could translate into lost sales of up to 19M devices, or nearly $17B, according to analysts including those at Credit Suisse. The news slammed Samsung’s share price, which closed down 7.5% in South Korea.

  • [By Leo Sun]

By comparison, Sony (NYSE:SNE) was expected to sell about 2.6 million PlayStation VRs, and Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) was expected to sell 2.3 million Gear VRs. Even Google’s new Daydream platform was projected to fuel sales of 450,000 compatible handsets. Those numbers clearly indicate that consumer demand for cheaper devices linked to smartphones or gaming consoles could continue outselling higher-end devices tethered to pricier PCs — which would be bad news for Oculus.
