Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In Right Now

February28, 2017: Markets opened lower again Tuesday but neither the Nasdaq Composite nor the S&P 500 index could climb out of the slough of despond. The blue chips did rise into positive territory briefly, but couldn’t hold onto the gains. Among the 11 S&P sectors, only utilities and consumer staples traded above the breakeven line while the losers were consumer discretionary sotcks and materials. WTI crude oil for April delivery settled at $54.01 a barrel, down 4 cents on the day, but up about 2.3% in the month of February. April gold dropped 0.4% on the day to settle at $1,253.90, but posted a gain of about 3.5% for the month. Equities were headed for a lower close shortly before the bell as the DJIA traded down 0.18% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.35%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 0.70%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) which traded down 1.58% at $70.61. The stock’s 52-week range is $62.72 to $75.19. Volume was about 30% above the daily average of around 9 million shares. The company had no specific news, but the carnage following Target’s earnings report this morning was not localized to just Target’s stock.

More heavy lifting will be necessary before the lithium miner will be able to report successful processing of ore from its Whabouchi mine, but boxes are certainly ticked by this company.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

But for short sellers in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR), there's another outcome: They've been badly burned as shares have surged, but they insist they've been right all along, and it's only a matter of time before the stock crashes and burns.

  • [By Canadian Value]

So Im going to stick my next out and share my views on four battleground stocks that are among my favorite shorts: World Acceptance (WRLD), Green Mountain (GMCR), Herbalife (HLF), and InterOil (IOC). And next week at the Value Investing Congress I will present another short, my largest.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As badly as short sellers want to hate on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), betting against the multiyear rally in this $12.7 billion beverage stock has been about as wise as eating from a box with a skull and crossbones on it. And as a bull market continues to lift all ships, Green Mountain’s ship is going to keep floating above the others.

Green Mountain owns Keurig, the brand of beverage brewers that use self-contained K-Cups to make coffee, teas, and other drinks. While Keurig’s “fad” status has certainly helped tip the deck against GMCR, the fact remains that the firm has done most of the hard work in getting Keurig machines accepted by consumers. With brewers essentially ubiquitous at this point, the firm is able to make money on its cash cow: the K-Cups.

Keurig’s individual-serving cups have big margins and a big installed base. With huge convenience and the relatively large sunk cost that consumers have put into their Keurig machines, it’s a sticky business with big switching costs. Consumers who buy a Keurig are much less likely to spend the money on a competing brand of proprietary coffee pods.

I’ve said before that GMCR is far from cheap right now. But its momentum trajectory is showing few signs of fizzling out, especially as direct competitors such as Starbucks (SBUX) continue to sell K-Cups of their own. Don’t bet against GMCR in September – buy this Rocket Stock instead.

Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. (The)(IPG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Interpublic is our income play in our media universe. While other stocks we cover offer a higher yield than IPG’s 2.1%, the company’s double digit EPS growth projections for 2016 (following an estimated 18% in 2015) will also likely be a driver of outperformance for the year. While results can be somewhat volatile for IPG, we would point to record new business win backlog this year, which improves our conviction that the better than average recent organic revenue growth trends will continue next year. At 18x our 2016 EPS estimate, we find IPG shares attractive at current levels for another projected year of healthy double digit total returns.

The Interpublic Group of Companies Inc. (NYSE: IPG) dropped about 4% Wednesday to post a new 52-week low of $21.28 after closing Tuesday at $22.16. The 52-week high is $25.71. Volume reached nearly 10 million shares traded, more than double the daily average of around 3.8 million. Tuesday’s weak earnings report continued to weigh on the share price.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate INTERPUBLIC GROUP OF COS as a Buy with a ratings score of A. This is based on the convergence of positive investment measures, which should help this stock outperform the majority of stocks that we rate. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, notable return on equity, reasonable valuation levels, good cash flow from operations and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. We feel its strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.

As for American DG Energy, today’s push above a technical ceiling at $0.34 is telling, though that clue is made more telling when you see the short-term moving average lines have given us key bullish crosses over the course of the past couple of months; the undertow is turning bullish. What you can’t see on the daily chart is that this is the first time in years we’ve seen higher lows logged for ADGE.

Top 10 Bank Stocks To Buy For 2018: 8point3 Energy Partners LP(CAFD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shanthi Rexaline]

If the Suniva noise is removed, the firm believes First Solar stock becomes a fundamental story of execution and long-term share gains. The firm also noted that the company has found success selling off projects to third parties, as intended, with the management seeing more value in selling to third-parties rather than to 8Point3 Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ: CAFD).

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Leading the charge are two yieldcos — NextEra Energy Partners (NYSE:NEP) and 8point3 Energy Partners (NASDAQ:CAFD) — and utility company AES Corporation (NYSE:AES). Here’s a look at why they’re good dividend stocks to own today.

  • [By J.B. Maverick]

Recently added in January 2016 to the "strong buy" list at Zacks Investment Research, 8point3 Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ: CAFD) is a subsidiary firm with the support of major solar power companies SunPower and First Solar, and plenty of cash to fund 2016 growth projects. It should be well positioned to move forward in its business of acquiring and operating solar energy generation projects. In late January 2016, the stock is trading at $16.45, in the middle of its 52-week range of $10.26 to $21.15. The stock offers a dividend yield of 2.39%. It has been in a general uptrend since October 2015. Year to date in 2016, the stock is down 2.97%, which means it is weathering the market storm better than many other firms. With the backing of First Solar and SunPower, and a partnership agreement with Wells Fargo, 8point3 is in a stronger industry position than the majority of alternative energy companies.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Axiom Capital Management’s Gordon Johnson made a startling comparison this week, saying that yieldco 8point3 Energy Partners (NASDAQ:CAFD) looks a lot like the now bankrupt SunEdison and the recently bailed-out SolarCity. If he’s right and the yieldco is built on unstable ground, it could justify the stock’s drop over the last few months and be a warning for investors.

Top 10 Bank Stocks To Buy For 2018: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

  • [By Andrew Tonner]

IPOs like Snap are a rare breed. In looking for companies comparable to it, I looked for listings that sported a post-IPO valuation above $5 billion, went pubic after 2010, and employ a consumer-facing business model. This resulted in an admittedly small sample of highly hyped tech IPOs including Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Twitter (NYSE:TWTR), Groupon (NASDAQ:GRPN), and Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA). For transparency’s sake, I opted to not include Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba in this list because its geographic focus and scale made it fundamentally different than the above tech IPOs, although including it wouldn’t have changed the outcome of this analysis.

DETROIT Volkswagen Group pleadedguilty Friday to three criminal chargesarising from its diesel emissions scandal, setting it up for a penalty that will probably propel its total costs fromthe debacle past the $20 billion mark.

U.S. District Court Judge Sean Coxin Detroitaccepted the plea but postponed agreeing to proposed fines and terms of a settlement. Another hearing was set for April 21.

Volkswagen, the German automaker that became an icon with its humble Beetle, pleaded guilty to charges of fraud, obstructionof justice and misrepresenting the capability of vehicles with diesel engines it imported into the USA.

Cox said he wanted more time to review the terms of the settlement agreement, which proposes a $4.3 billion fine that is far less than what the company could be fined under federal sentencing guidelines.Volkswagen has agreed to settlements worth about $17 billion for U.S. consumers and dealers who own the automaker’s diesel vehicles.

stock market stocks: Abbott Laboratories(ABT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matt Hogan]

AbbVie has distributed a significant amount of its earnings in the form of dividends (~60 percent) since the company spun off from Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) in 2013. The company appears to be trading at a 10 percent discount to fair value when applying similar assumptions in the 5-year dividend discount model as shown below.

In the Lightning Round, Cramer was bullish on Abbott Laboratories (ABT) , Dycom Industries (DY) and Howard Hughes (HHC) .

Finally, and as the icing on the cake, Wall Street uncovered via a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) sold 44 million shares of Mylan stock at $41.60, reducing its remaining position in the company to 25.75 million shares, or about 4.8% of its outstanding shares. Considering all the issues Mylan has had recently, the fact that Abbott substantially pared its large holding in the company is a bit worrisome.

stock market stocks: Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated(PEG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shauna O’Brien]

Jefferies announced on Tuesday that it has upgraded Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PEG).

The firm has lifted its rating on PEG from “Hold” to “Buy,” and has raised the company’s price target from $36 to $37. This price target suggests a 12% increase from the stock’s current price of $32.42.

Analyst Paul Fremont commented: “We are upgrading to Buy based on the improving outlook for regulatory approval of the company’s “Energy Strong” capital spending program.

“Each $1.0 billion of incremental spending will add an estimated $0.10 to PEG’s earnings. We assume that incremental spending is funded by debt and by incremental cash expected from the increasing gas basis differential between the Leidy hub and New Jersey. Our new estimates are considerably higher than consensus in 2014-16.”

Public Service Enterprise Group shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Tuesday. The stock is up 6% YTD.

stock market stocks: GTx Inc.(GTXI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One biopharmaceutical player that’s rapidly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is GTx (GTXI), which is dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecules that selectively target hormone pathways to treat cancer, osteoporosis and bone loss, muscle loss and other serious medical condition. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 53%.

If you look at the chart for GTx, you’ll notice that this stock recently gapped down sharply from over $4 to below $1.50 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of GTXI have rebounded sharply and started to uptrend, with the stock moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.96 a share. During that move, shares of GTXI have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GTXI within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GTXI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.35 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GTXI will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started just above $4 a share. Some possible upside targets if GTXI gets into that gap with volume are $2.50 to $3 a share, or possibly even $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy GTXI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $1.50 a share. One can also buy GTXI off strength once it takes out $1.96 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Very strong results across the board for Dycom, with spending from its top customers only further accelerating. We’re not surprised that FQ3 guidance came in slightly ahead of expectations, as many investors had viewed their initial guidance as conservative. We are encouraged to see organic growth re-accelerating in FQ4 to the mid-teens, with its acquired Goodman asset contributing $15MM of expected revenue (up from $13.4MM in FQ2). Dycom also procured new customer awards in the quarter from AT&T (T), Comcast (CMCSA), CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream Holdings (WIN) to support further growth. Dycom also repurchased $25MM of shares during FQ2 and authorized an additional $75MM over the next 18 months, giving Dycom $150MM of incremental repurchase authorization through August 2018

Gains are being seen elsewhere as well, except in shares of The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS). AgriumInc. (NYSE: AGU) was up almost 3% at $91.95 in late Monday trading, although this one held up much better in the destructive news phase when the alarming news roiled these stocks. The big winner is Intrepid Potash, Inc. (NYSE: IPI), with a gain of 7% to $16.20 in late-Monday trading.

The agriculture ETF is heavily weighted toward the U.S., with 45.8% of its assets there, but it is geographically diverse, with exposure to countries such as Canada (9.9%), Switzerland (8.5%), Japan (6.7%) and Singapore (5.1%).

Potash Cartel Breakup Has Weighed on This Agriculture ETF

The ETF’s unit price declined in the first half of 2013, partly because of the breakup of the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC), through which Russia’s Uralkali, the world’s No. 1 potash producer, and Belaruskali of Belarus distribute their potash. The market is dominated by BPC and Canpotex, owned by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT), Mosaic and Agrium Inc. (NYSE: AGU).

Together, the two cartels control 70% of global potash exports, so the breakup of BPC will result in a more fractured market, which seems likely to push potash prices lower. Shares of major potash producers fell sharply on the news, as did Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF due to its potash stock holdings, which include Agrium, Potash Corp. and Mosaic.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now

2017 was said to be the year of the buyout, and so far, it appears that the M&A prediction is coming true. Last year’s market saw several industries struggling and left some solid companies beaten down. That put them in a vulnerable position as some of their more stable competitors looked for ways to profit from the challenging environment.

Not only have market conditions made buyouts look much more enticing, but the Donald Trump administration’s promises to lower corporate taxes and reduce regulations have also given some companies more incentive to look for takeover targets.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

But for short sellers in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR), there's another outcome: They've been badly burned as shares have surged, but they insist they've been right all along, and it's only a matter of time before the stock crashes and burns.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Rite Aid Corporation(RAD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Daniel B. Kline]

In addition to having a rough sales month, Fred’s is still in limbo when it comes to possibly buying 865 stores from Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: WBA) and Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD) for $950 million in cash. That deal would more than double the size of the company, which essentially makes any past sales trends irrelevant.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Rite Aid Corp. (NYSE: RAD) dropped about 3.8% Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $2.25 after closing Monday at $2.34. The 52-week high is $8.77. Volume was around 30 million shares traded, less than 10% below the daily volume of nearly 32 million. The company had no specific news Tuesday.

Shares of Fred’s (FRED) are up more than 3% today after activist investorAlden Global Capital announced a 25% stake in the retailer.
