stock market for beginners

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is coming off a pretty sizable rally. Driven in part by broad tax reform optimism and in part by Tesla-specific tailwinds, TSLA stock rallied from $300 to over $340 in a matter of days.

These tailwinds included the EV tax credit surviving the legislative chopping block, Tesla’s new semitrucks receiving several preorders from big companies, and CEO Elon Musk confirming that the company is working on its own AI hardware.

But that rally appears to be over now. While the market and specifically tech stocks have continued to rally over the past several days, Tesla stock has dropped. It’s not much a drop (about 2% over the past five days), but it’s enough to illustrate that this current rally is over.

Does that mean it’s time to sell TSLA stock?

If you’re a trader, maybe. TSLA stock looks like it will be the victim of some choppy trade in the near future.

But if you’re an investor oriented toward long-term gains, then no. Given its leadership position in arguably the biggest secular growth market over the next 5-10 years, TSLA stock will head materially higher in a multiyear window.

We will admit that these latter assumptions are somewhat arbitrary, but nevertheless we cannot help escape the view that in 2017 everything will likely be at least a little adverse to prior expectations. On average our estimate reductions are 8%, and range from 3% at CIT Group (CIT) to 13% at Goldman Sachs. With that, we are lowering our PT of Bank of America,Citigroup andGoldman Sachs from $20, $70 and $243 to $18, $63 and $214, respectively…

Our financial lives can get complicated, and sometimes things slip through the cracks.

I forgot about an old account when I moved from California to Utah a few years ago. I kept $140 in a checking account at a credit union to maintain membership, since credit unions often have great auto loan rates. The account slipped my mind, and I never notified them that I had moved.

I often run “missing money” searches for my clients, and for fun, I ran one for myself. Lo and behold, I got a hit! I found that old checking account. So I called them to prove my identity, and they sent me a check for a little over $140.

According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, in 2015 $3.2 billion was returned to its rightful owners by unclaimed property administrators.

Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Foresight Energy LP(FELP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

After the recent distribution cut, Foresight’s distribution coverage is over 6.0x with much of the future cash flow dedicated to reducing leverage. It has over 80% of its coal sales priced for next year and its costs should improve as the low cost Hillsboro mine comes back into production early next year. It is also benefitting from cost synergies with the Murray operations. We believe Foresight’s new distribution level is sustainable. With its 15.5% yield, we feel FELP could be attractive to income seeking investors.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

FORESIGHT ENERGY LP has experienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. We feel it is likely to report a decline in earnings in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, FORESIGHT ENERGY LP increased its bottom line by earning $0.78 versus $0.08 in the prior year. For the next year, the market is expecting a contraction of 67.9% in earnings ($0.25 versus $0.78).

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Despite any intermediate fluctuations, we have only bad news to report on this stock’s performance over the last year: it has tumbled by 83.17%, worse than the S&P 500’s performance. Consistent with the plunge in the stock price, the company’s earnings per share are down 82.85% compared to the year-earlier quarter. Naturally, the overall market trend is bound to be a significant factor. However, in one sense, the stock’s sharp decline last year is a positive for future investors, making it cheaper (in proportion to its earnings over the past year) than most other stocks in its industry. But due to other concerns, we feel the stock is still not a good buy right now.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The gross profit margin for FORESIGHT ENERGY LP is currently lower than what is desirable, coming in at 33.76%. It has decreased from the same quarter the previous year. Regardless of the weak results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 3.18% is above that of the industry average.

Base rate customers will see their commissions fall from $9.99 to $6.95 per trade, matching TD Ameritrade. Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Golar LNG Partners LP(GMLP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Golar LNG Partners LP (GMLP), a limited partnership, owns and operates floating storage and regasification units and LNG carriers under long-term charters. This stock closed up 3.5% at $32.74 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 432,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 81,559

    Volume % Change: 283%

From a technical perspective, GMLP bounced notably higher here right off its 200-day moving average of $31.79 and back above its 50-day moving average of $32.56 with strong upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of GMLP within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GMLP manages to take out Monday’s intraday high at $32.96 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $33.15 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GMLP as long as it’s trending above its 200-day at $31.79 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that’s near or above 81,559 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GMLP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $34.78 to its 52-week high at $36.

Hot High Tech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Alaska Air Group, Inc.(ALK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Airlines like United Continental (UAL), Alaska Air Group (ALK) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU) have been so cheap for so long now, that making an argument for big gains based solely on valuation seems remarkably foolish. Thankfully, it’s not the only argument that Barclays analyst Brandon Oglenski make as they initiated the sector with a Positive rating, while calling United Continental the “most compelling stock” in the airlines sector. They explain why:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Alaska Air Group (ALK) has advanced 1.3% to $94.55 after getting upgraded to Buy from Hold at Stifel.

Shake Shack (SHAK) has risen 1.7% to $33 after getting upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Wedbush.

  • [By Chris Lange]

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Wednesday was Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE: ALK) which rose over 4% to $64.43. The stocks 52-week range is $61.10 to $101.43. Volume was2.4 million compared to its average volume of 1.8 million.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

It’s been clear from the beginning that Alaska Air’s (NYSE:ALK) acquisition of Virgin America was bad news for United Continental (NYSE:UAL). Alaska Air’s management viewed the deal as a springboard for growth in California — especially in the Bay Area. Meanwhile, United is the dominant airline in San Francisco.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

While Southwest Airlines achieved the best score overall, Alaska Air (NYSE:ALK) received top marks among traditional carriers. This was its 10th consecutive victory in the traditional carrier segment.

Megyn Kelly was arguably the highest-profile media figure of the 2016 campaign, thanks to her exchanges with Donald Trump. Yet as Trump was sworn in as president, the former Fox News anchor stayed sidelined, waiting to start her new assignment at NBC News.

Set up to host two different shows — including an hour of “Today” come fall — “Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly” marked her official NBC debut, armed with a high-profile “get” interview with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

In a CNN interview, Kelly maintained “Sunday Night” would distinguish itself by being “cutting edge” and “a little irreverent.” Those attributes, however, weren’t particularly evident in a premiere that looked like pretty much any conventional newsmagazine, including separate pieces from Cynthia McFadden and Harry Smith.

Kelly’s centerpiece interview displayed some of the toughness that defined her at Fox, expressing disbelief when the Russian president claimed he hadn’t spoken with his ambassador about meetings with Trump’s inner circle. “Never?” she asked, with an arched eyebrow.

Sohu.com Inc (NASDAQ: SOHU) is projected to report a quarterly loss at $0.57 per share on revenue of $406.50 million.

Bank of Hawaii Corporation (NYSE: BOH) is expected to report its quarterly earnings at $0.99 per share on revenue of $149.88 million.

Sohu.com (SOHU) is a Chinese online media, search, gaming, community and mobile service group. This stock closed up 7.5% to $69.61 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 4.90 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 1.01 million

    Volume % Change: 351%

From a technical perspective, SOHU ripped sharply higher here with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of SOHU into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $67.80. Shares of SOHU are now quickly moving within range of triggering another breakout trade. That trade will hit if SOHU manages to take out Monday’s high of $69.71 to its 52-week high at $70.63 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SOHU as long as it’s trending above Monday’s low of $66.95 or above that first breakout level of $67.80 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.01 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SOHU will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $75 to $80.

Sohu.com (NASDAQ: SOHU) shares rose 2.77% to touch a new 52-week high of $71.54. Analysts at Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock from neutral to conviction buy.

  • [By Matthew Smith]

Shares in Sohu.com (SOHU) continued their rapid rise, hitting yet another fresh 52-week high during the session, as the company announced the special dividend from Sohou yesterday (press release located here). Sohu.com will receive nearly $161.2 million in the transaction which is part of the overall $400 million deal with Tencent (TCEHY.PK) which was announced not too long ago. These are exciting times in the internet space as we move from computers to mobile devices, but China’s internet landscape looks like the ‘Wild West’ right now and we expect to see further deals as companies jockey for position in their respective niches and consolidation begins as the larger players look to step up growth and gain exposure to new business segments.

Should it be on your buy list heading into 2017? Let’s take a closer look.

How Microsoft has Fared in 2016

The biggest positives for Microsoft Corporation in 2016 would be its triple digit (113% Azure revenue growth) cloud revenue growth and it overtaking salesforce (NYSE:CRM) to become the overall enterprise SaaS market leader. Also, Office 365 increased its customer base to 23.1 M and Dynamics CRM online seat additions, enterprise mobility customers nearly doubled year over year. Surface series revenues growing by 9% ($3.81 B in profit) in the latest quarter can also be counted as apositive. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Adam Levy]

Frontier Communications (NASDAQ:FTR) has been shedding both pay-TV and broadband internet customers over the past year, growing solely through acquisitions it can’t really afford. The company acquired some of Verizon’s (NYSE:VZ) FiOS property earlier this year for $10.3 billion, and it’s managed to already lose a good chunk of what it paid for.

Frontier Communications (FTR) sunk to the bottom of the S&P 500 today.

    Getty Images

    Frontier Communicationsdropped 4.7% to $2.41, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% to 2,365.45.

Why did Frontier sink today? There’s no news that I’ve been able to find, so let’s blame the Federal Reserve, which is widely expected to hike interest rates tomorrow. Frontier is primarily known for paying a hefty dividend–it now tops 17%–and dividends tend to fall out of favor when interest rates rise. (Utilities, however, dropped just 0.1% today, so maybe that theory is bunk.)

Frontier Communications was the biggest loser last week when it dropped 5.1% after getting cut toNeutral from Buy at BofA Merrill Lynch. It was a string of events that began with Frontier’s earnings on Feb. 28, earnings that led Wells Fargo to opine that the company was still a “show me story.”

Frontier Communications’ market capitalization fell to $2.8 billion today from $3 billion yesterday. It reported a net lossof $376 million on sales of $8.9 billion in 2016.

24/7 Wall St.’sJon C. Ogg excerpts from Merrill Lynch’s note:

In our view, the challenge for the stock is that as the top line has compressed at a surprising rate, the payout ratio and therefore risk to the dividend, is rising. With a 15% yield already, we see the stock as caught in a negative feedback loop. The market is pricing in a dividend cut that neednt happen now or even in the next several years, but the mere fact the yield is that high carries the risk that the Board and management could simply respond to the market by trimming the dividend proactively. Even if the dividend were cut 50%, we dont believe there would be substantial downside for the stock as the yield would emerge at a relatively more normal 7.5%. Until FTR can show business stability, however, which we had expected in 4Q but now do not expect until 2H at the earliest, irrespective of the attractive yield, we dont believe the stock will be able to outperform.

Frontier Communications’ market capitalization fell to $3.1 billion today from $3.2 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $376 million on sales of $9 billion in 2016.

The past few days have been utterly painful for shareholders of Frontier Communications (NASDAQ:FTR). After analysts called the company’s dividend into question, shares have fallen sharply — and they have lost almost half of their value since just this January.

top ten stocks today: LinkedIn Corporation(LNKD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Benzinga News Desk]

Microsoft has offered concessions to EU antitrust regulators over its $26.2 billion, $196 per share offer for LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD), according to the European Commission. The EU regulator had expressed concerns to Microsoft executives about the deal, which was announced in June.

  • [By Andres Cardenal]

The most powerful investment ideas are the ones that can be easily explained and understood. LinkedIn(LNKD) is an undisputed market leader in remarkably promising areas such as professional networking and online employment opportunities, and this makes the company a top name to buy in 2016 and hold for years to come.

As of the third quarter of 2015, LinkedIn(LNKD) had 396 million registered members around the world, a big increase of 20% versus the same quarter the previous year, and 39,726 corporate solutions customers on the platform, a year-over-year increase of 31%. Individuals and corporations attract each other to LinkedIn in search of opportunities, and this creates a virtuous cycle driving sustainable growth over the long term.

Management is also translating the company’s massive opportunities into rapid revenue growth. Total sales grew 37% to $780 million last quarter, with the acquisition of online learning platform lynda.com representing $41 million of that. LinkedIn’s three growth engines are firing on all cylinders: Talent solutions for corporations grew 46%, while premium subscription sales increased 21%, and online advertising revenue jumped 28%.

LinkedIn(LNKD) is actively investing for growth, so profit margins are hard to predict in the short term. However, the company should be able to combine solid revenue growth and expanding profit margins in the years ahead.

  • [By Alex McGuire]

For example, LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE: LNKD) fell 16.1% to $79.03 from its IPO date on May 19, 2011, to Aug. 19, 2011. But LNKD stock has since recovered 148% to today’s share price of $195.96.

learn about stock market

DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) filed a 6-K this morning announcing the restructuring of its SIFNOS revolver. Here are the pertinent points.

The revolver will no longer be secured by all present and future vessels owned by DRYS. The spread over LIBOR increases 100 bp to 650. The maturity date is extended five years. $2 million restructuring fee is paid to SIFNOS. 30% profit share on vessels sold remains in place.

Implications

The extension of the maturity of the SIFNOS debt and the release of all security are critical elements in securing outside debt financing. No entity was going to lend money to DRYS as long as the $200 million SIFNOS loan was due in less than 3 years. The release of all security for all present and future vessels allows any lender to be well over-collateralized on any loan made with DRYS. This is a key element given GE’s (NYSE:GE) poor reputation.

This announcement does not guarantee a successful origination of debt but it does clear the path. If DRYS is able to raise debt capital at a reasonable cost, it would relieve to the need to complete some or all of the remaining $188 million of equity capital under its most recent Prospectus Supplement and could potentially have a dramatic impact on the stock price. Analyses of the current equity offering can be found amongst these articles.

The textile manufacturing process has changed relatively slowly compared with other industries, but that could change soon as more and more focus is put on disrupting it.

And the downgrades have continued today, with analysts at Evercore ISI, FBR, and Canaccord Genuity joining the downgrade party.

Isn’t it a little late, now that the stock has lost a quarter of its value? Canaccord’s Camilo Lyon and Pallav Saini don’t think so:

Following surprisingly weak Q4 results and further reduction in 2017 guidance, we are downgradingUnder Armour stock to HOLD from Buy. While EPS of 23c came in slightly below our 25c consensus estimate, sales (+12%) and gross margin (-314bps) were significantly below guidance and our expectations. The disappointing results were largely driven by weak NA apparel business, which continues to be plagued by sporting goods bankruptcies, limited lifestyle/fashion merchandise in Under Armour’s assortment, and heavy promotional activity by Nike (NKE) and Adidas to whichUnder Armour responded late. WhileUnder Armour is taking steps to rectify the assortment missteps in apparel by increasing its lifestyle offering, we are not likely to see a significant improvement before 2018. That said, there were pockets of growth within apparel, mainly golf and basketball, that underscore the value of the brand. While growth continues to be robust in footwear (+36%), international (+55%) and DTC (+23%), we believe the challenges in Under Armour’s NA apparel business will continue to weigh on the business in 2017. In addition, recent news reports suggest there are more sporting goods retailers (e.g. EMS, Gander Mountain, Bob’s Sports) on the verge of bankruptcy, which could put further downward pressure on athletic vendors. candlestick chart: Gilead Sciences, Inc.(GILD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jack Foley]

Up to now, I have been very vocal with respect to my bullish opinion regarding Gilead Sciences (NSDQ:GILD). Many investors and analysts alike have been trying to pick a bottom in the stock this year, but the stock stubbornly continues to trade below $75 a share. Worrying downward trends with respect to the company’s HCVdivision remain the dominant theme among investors. Gilead’s HCV division slipped by a whopping 31% last quarter, which resulted in HCV sales of $3.3 billion, which was well below expectation. The stock is now down almost 40% from its high back in June 2015. At present, investors simply can’t see a swift turnaround in the company’s quarterly sales. This has resulted in the company now trading with a price-to-earnings ratio of 6.94 which is ludicrously cheap for a company with a market cap of around $100billion. Nevertheless, the question still remains whether the stock is going lower.

Shares of Gilead Sciences (GILD) have been under pressure ever since investors realized its hepatitis-C sales weren’t going to be able to keep growing. Since then, the market has been looking for Gilead to make an acquisition to kick start its growth again, while writing off its pipeline. Is that a mistake? It could be according to Jefferies analyst Brian Abrahams and team.

    Pixabay

What are they seeing that others are missing? They explain:

Based on an EASL title posted in recent weeks but we believe not broadly discussed, ACC inhibitor GS-0976 – one of GILD’s least-talked-about assets in NASH, in our opinion – appears to have demonstrated significant positive effects in the as-yet-unreported ph.II NASH study. The presentation title, “Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) inhibitor GS-0976 leads to suppression of hepatic de novo lipogenesis and significant improvements in MRI-PDFF, MRE, and markers of fibrosis after 12 weeks of therapy in patients with NASH,” indicates to us that recently-acquired ’0976′s novel mechanism, which has good scientific rationale, may likely be playing out…

We believe this meaningfully de-risks a second NASH asset, and given add’l catalysts over the next 12mo could set the stage for increased recognition of potentially meaningful drivers w/in GILD’s internal pipeline. We see upside potential.

I threw in the towel on Gilead in a column on Gilead earlier this month, when I argued that even an acquisition would not be enough to get it growing again.

Shares of Gilead Sciences have dipped 0.1% to $68.97 at 1:05 p.m. today, while the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) has risen 0.4% to $296.51.

candlestick chart: Unilever N.V. (UNLVF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

In sum, the three companies are equally valued at generous multiples. It is difficult to choose one of them based on fundamentals or valuations, but we like the strategy of Nestl茅 and P&G more than Unilever. Therefore, we recommend investing in these companies only if someone is interested in a limited but relatively safe upside potential. Good entry prices would be as follows: Nestl茅 (OTCPK:NSRGF) at CHF 70.1 or $70.1 for the ADR , P&G at $83.6 and Unilever (OTC:UNLVF) at 34.1 or $38 for the ADR (NYSE:UN).

Teekay Partners (TOO) has been on a roller coaster ride. This ride appears to be very dangerous still, but there may be reasonable ways to take advantage of the stock price volatility. Plus the market rally may have thrown management a lifeline. If that is the case, management needs to take that lifeline and run quickly.

Source: Seeking Alpha Website, July 6, 2017, Market Close

In early May, the market reacted negatively to a contract cancellation. On May 18, 2017, management reported the cancellation of the Arendal Spirit UMS contract. As can be seen above the stock basically tanked and then has recovered some. That recovery has decreased the cost of capital materially. So if management needs to raise capital, then now may be the best time to do just that. Waiting for a clearer crystal ball could make capital raises prohibitively expensive. The common unit holders could be relatively wiped out in the process.
