After a two week hiatus, I am back with my regular weekly ramblings and ruminations on markets and anything else that strikes my fancy. One week was missed due to Thanksgiving of course but the week prior my wife had to fly off to Texas due to a family emergency leaving me with homefront duties. It has been years since I had to do all that unaided and, between feeding a 13 year old, the cats, the dogs, homework patrol and musical theatre practice schedules (the youngest has traded her plans for pop star divadom with a sparkling flashy clothing line for a career amongst the footlights of Broadway and an EMO clothing line) this is one of the weekly articles that got whacked.

While I was gone, I did a lot of reading and catching up with the third quarter commentary coming from some of the leading mutual and hedge fund managers. One of my greatest strengths has been knowing that I am not the smartest guy in the room, and being able to figure out who that person was. I have become superb at listening to the smart guys and then filtering it all through my own gray matter to develop a high conviction opinion about the world. I want to share some of the insights garnered over the last couple of weeks that might help us steer through the murky waters ahead.

best stocks to buy today

It’s getting close to the time whenGameStop (NYSE:GME)will tell us how poorly the holiday shopping season played out. The largest dedicated retailer of video games will serve up financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter on Thursday.

We already know that the small-box chain wasn’t at its best through the first two-thirds of the quarter. Total sales through the first two months of the period plunged 16.4% to $2.5 billion, held back by a brutal 18.7% slide in comparable-store sales. November comps plummeted 26.6% as aggressive Black Friday promotions and weak gamer appetite for Call of Duty: Infinite WarfareandTitanfall 2weighed on its registers. December comps clocked in with a more modest 13% year-over-year dip, and GameStop said in mid-January that the trend was continuing to improve into the third and final month of the fiscal period.

We’ll know for sure how January played out after Thursday’s market close. GameStop’s guidance in mid-January was for comps for the holiday quarter to decline between 16% and 18%, better than the 18.7% drop through the first two months combined.

offshore investments

Vical (NASDAQ:VICL) has been a horror show for investors. Failed trials, poor technology and a lack of awareness have left this small biotech company from San Diego all but forgotten. There are many reasons that a long-term investor would have no interest in this company even though it passes Benjamin Graham’s criteria as a net-net investment because it is trading below cash. I believe there might be one or two more puffs left in this old cigar butt investment if you put a swing trade spin on it.

Although VICL will eventually need to use some of its $43 million in cash to fund operations and trials, we might get a puff or two of profits before it’s gone. With an annual burn rate of $8-11 million the company should be able to advance its pipeline for at least two years with no need to dilute or secure risky financing. This should provide a swing trader with enough time to implement and exit their trade.

VICL’s recent fiduciary responsibility has put it on stable financial footing for the next three years and is what initially caught my interest but not everything is good at VICL. There are some historical and future risks that need to be assessed.

popular stocks to invest in: Ethan Allen Interiors Inc.(ETH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was a strong day for the stock market, as the Dow finished up nearly 100 points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted gains as well. Investors remained generally upbeat about the prospects for the U.S. economy in 2017, and a rise in crude oil prices helped lift the energy sector higher during the market session. Yet comments during a press conference from President-elect Donald Trump weighed on the healthcare sector, and some individual stocks took particularly hard hits. Among the worst performers were Perrigo (NYSE:PRGO), Novadaq Technologies (NASDAQ:NVDQ), and Ethan Allen Interiors (NYSE:ETH). Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Count local TV station owners among the industries emboldened byDonald Trump.

In changing of the guards at the White House, the local TV industry sees an opportunity in their ongoing quest to toss out the Federal Communication Commissions rules on media cross-ownership that barmedia companies from owning newspapers and TV stations in the same market.

The National Association of Broadcasters, a trade group for TV station owners, “is cautiously optimistic a Trump FCC will take a fresh look at reforming outdated local broadcast ownership rules, said Dennis Wharton, NAB’s executive vice president of media relations. These are ‘I Love Lucy’ era rules in a ‘Modern Family’ world.

The rules, devised in 1975, specificallyprohibit media companies from owning a newspaper and a TV station in the same local market. Companies are also barred from owning more than one top-4-in-ratings TV station in any market.

stock trading system: Caesars Entertainment Corporation(CZR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) and Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ:CZR) are two of the most well known gaming companies in the world. But they’re very different companies with very different futures ahead.

  • [By AlphaStreetResearch]

Caesars Entertainment Corporation (CZR) is a highly overvalued gaming, hotel, and entertainment company with deteriorating fundamentals on all levels in a highly competitive environment. The company’s stock has seen a massive run to the upside on the coattails of other casino and entertainment companies in the space. A considerable catalyst for the push higher in these stocks is the good news coming out of Macau, but this is an area where Caesars has absolutely no exposure and will be locked out of for the foreseeable future after failing to take appropriate licensing measures. Below is our introduction into the business model, its weaknesses, and the new selling or shorting opportunity that exists for CZR after the recent appreciation in share price. Investors will soon realize that there is little upside value in this company and that there are much better opportunities in this space. The company is now amidst a major struggle from a debt standpoint with major deadlines approaching over the next year and a half. The company is in no position to thrive going forward unless major steps are taken to overhaul the company’s capital structure. Caesars Entertainment has a market cap of $3.19 Billion after the stock has moved up over 225% year to date and reports its next quarter on October 31, 2013. With this in mind, we value CZR at $21.00 by year-end of 2013 and $14.00 by August 1, 2014, a decrease of 40% from current levels. We will later highlight:

Back in April, I recommendedCaesars Entertainment Corp.(Nasdaq: CZR) as a buy – but warned you that this was a play that might take some time to mature.

A long term performance chart shows Voxeljet AGalong with other small cap 3D printing stocks like ExOne Co (NASDAQ: XONE), 3D Systems Corporation (NYSE: DDD) and Stratasys, Ltd (NASDAQ: SSYS) all peaking around 2013-2014 when the bubble burst:

  • [By Beth McKenna]

While Stratasys’ stock is still down significantly from its all-time high, it’s showing signs of life this year. It’s gained 17% in 2017, through March 3, outpacing rival 3D Systems’ (NYSE:DDD)9.3% gain and the S&P 500’s total return of 6.9%. Shares of 3D Systems had been riding higher in 2017, through plummeted 10% after the company announced earnings on Feb. 28. Quarterly revenue and 2017 revenue guidance came in lighter than Wall Street analysts were expecting.

  • [By Javier Hasse]

On the other hand, he expounded, 3D Systems Corporation (NYSE: DDD) and Stratasys go through resellers, not relying much on retailers, “because they are more industrial machines.” So, there are no strong competitors in the retail segment in Latin America, he assured.
