stock market today chart: Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc(MTU)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Jubak, Senior Markets Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The one currency that is running against the weak dollar tide is the Japanese yen. The yen initially climbed on the Fed’s no taper decision—rising to 97.75 on the news—but then fell all the way back to 99 yen to the dollar and finished yesterday at 99.42. (Remember that since the yen is quoted in yen to the dollar, a higher number is a sign of a weak yen and a smaller number means the yen is getting stronger.) The thinking seems to be that the recent Japanese trade deficit will push the Bank of Japan to further weaken the yen, in order to boost Japanese exports. I continue to think that the yen will finish 2013 at weaker levels than current trading, and that leads me to continue to hold positions in Japanese stocks such as Toyota Motor (TM) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MTU). Both stocks are members of my Jubaks Picks portfolio.

Hot Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2018

Gazprom’s (OTCPK:OGZPY) (OTCQX:GZPFY) P/E ratio of 2.8 makes it worth a look to investors, and with a market cap of $45 billion and $180 billion in book value, which means that it owns $180 billion of it’s own immense pipeline and refining system and huge natural gas reserves. So to look at whether Gazprom is undervalued we must determine how sturdy those natural gas assets will be in the future.

To be long Gazprom, you have to be long natural gas, which requires a look at the supply and demand that makes up the pricing of natural gas around the world. Natural gas in the future in my view, will continually see demand increases throughout the world, as the continual increase in electrical vehicles will require a big switch-over from oil to natural gas, as power plants which are most economical as gas powered, are needed to power electricity and heating to homes although this trend will be a slow developing trend. And yet the supply part is not quite as bullish but still good for the long term prices for natural gas, as the advent of liquified natural gas, which is when natural gas is super cooled and shrunk down to hold more volume, has been increasing in recent years.

J.M. Smucker(SJM) is falling Monday, after Morgan Stanley’sMatthew Grainger and his team cut their rating on the stock, citing pricing pressures from Wal-Mart (WMT) and growing competition from private-labels.

    Getty Images

Grainger slash Smucker to Underweight from Equal Weight, and shaved $6 off his price target, to $126. He also cites what he calls “sustained” challenges in both its coffee and pet food business, as well as“below-average strategic optionality.”

At the same time, he also upgraded Pinnacle Foods (PF) to Overweight from Equal Weight, and raised his price target to $63 from $58, on its double-digit earnings growth and what he sees as superior execution.

Nonetheless, he sees many of the packaged food companies in his coverage, from Smucker to Pinnacle, as subject to pressure from Wal-Mart and off-brand rivals. From the note:

Walmart comprises ~22% of sales across our coverage, a figure that has increased in recent years even as the retailers total grocery sales have grown at an even faster 4% CAGR. With Food margins expected to expand meaningfully, we believe this only enhances Walmart’s negotiating leverage going forward. SJM, Dean Foods (DF), and General Mills (GIS) are most at risk in the current environment, in our view.

Recent scanner data points to a positive inflection in private label trends (share up ~30 bps L12W) across a range of center-store categories, a dynamic we believe could intensify in an increasingly competitive retail grocery landscape. Our analysis of recent trends points to the most meaningful underperformance vs. private label at GIS, SJM, ConAgra (CAG), and Campbell Soup (CPB), while only PF has outperformed in recent weeks.

Smucker is down 1.1% to $127.95 this morning, while Pinnacle is up 0.8% to %48.47.

Hot Undervalued Stocks To Watch For 2018: Bayer Aktiengesellschaft (BAYRY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

You can torture the data many ways, of course, and there were some pharma price increases in the US, but apparently, they were not especially large. What hurt were discounting, especially for Xarelto, a Bayer (OTCPK:BAYRY) oral anticoagulant which JNJ markets in the US; and the diabetes Invokana line.

The Regeneron press release in November for its Q3 2017 financial and operating results reaffirmed Eylea’s full year 2017 U.S. net product sales growth of approximately 10% over 2016, which could be about $1 billion. From our model, we see the Q4 total revenues for Eylea, excluding sales outside the United States from Regeneron’s collaborative partner Bayer AG (OTCPK:BAYRY), of $1.2 billion, or a 17% increase year-on-year. REGN stock has a forward P/E ratio of 21.83 as of December 8, 2017, while the current trailing P/E is 34.57.

This type of spin-off is not uncommon among German companies, as they streamline their portfolios to focus on the where they have more competitive advantages in the long term. For instance, in the recent past, Siemens (OTCPK:SIEGY) has split out Osram (OTC:OSAGY) and Bayer (OTCPK:BAYRY) has performed the spin-off of Covestro (OTCPK:CVXTY), something that Rheinmetall is likely to do in the near future because its auto unit has reached peak margins, and therefore this is the best time to spin-off the business.

As the graphic below shows, ImmunoGen’s product pipeline is potentially significant. Furthermore, it is impressive to see the involvement and partnerships in these early stage compounds by some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies. This includes firms like Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN), Roche (OTCQX:RHHBY), Bayer (OTCPK:BAYRY), Sanofi (NYSE:SNY), Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY), and Novartis (NYSE:NVS).

BeforeBayer(NASDAQOTH: BAYRY)arrived onto the scene, I viewedMonsanto(NYSE: MON)as an intriguing growth stock. It has a rich history of delivering value to shareholders and continues to hold a dominant technological edge over key competitors in crop protection products, seeds, and traits. While little has changed its promising pipeline and portfolio, the pending acquisition throws a wrench in anyone’s plans to start or add to a position. Uncertainty stemming from the merger provides several terrible reasons to buy Monsanto at this time.

Top Warren Buffett Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Nearly a decade ago, Warren Buffett made a bet with a hedge fund investor that a simple stock index fund would outperform a group of pre-selected hedge funds over a decade.

Although the bettors have until the end of the year to settle the wager, the guy who bet against Buffett has reportedly thrown in the towel. Buffett has won handily.

Of course, what’s compelling about this $1 million wager is that Buffett, the world’s most successful investor, didn’t bet that he would would beat hedge funds with his own skill. He picked a static index fund, a do-nothing basket of stocks, as his champion.

The reason Buffett won? Cost matters. Hedge funds typically charge annual fees of at last 2% of funds under management. Then they’ll grab 20% or more of the profits — if they make money. The managers always win at the expense of investors.

Today’s slaughter comes two days after Microchip Technology narrowed its third-quarter guidance. Stifel’s Kevin Cassidy and team had the details:

Microchip upwardly revised its December ending quarter…Non-GAAP EPS guidance was updated to $0.87 – $0.94 compared to $0.85 – $0.95 previously…The According to management, the upside is coming from better than expected integration of recent acquisitions. Management pointed out that significant gross margin improvements may be recognized as the inventory of higher cost products from the now closed Micrel fab is depleted. This year, Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) has been betting heavily on online streaming as a way to reverse its fortunes. Given that it was all through non-exclusive content, many analysts were hesitant, but now, following its biggest launch (courtesy of the NFL), some are beginning to reconsider their stance.

Although, it may still be too soon to really tell the deal’s long-term impact across all mediums.

First, a quick refresher. The NFL has been handing out rights to its game like candy to anyone willing to pay its high prices. So when word came the league was looking for a digital partner for its Thursday night slate (and at a discounted rate), suitors came calling.

You’d be hard pressed to find a quieter tech leader than ServiceNow Inc. (NYSE: NOW).

That’s likely because hardly anyone pays attention to IT services companies besides their customers. After all, the digital “plumbing” found in corporate campuses and skyscrapers is not as exciting as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies… or flying cars.

investment ideas: Franco-Nevada Corporation(FNV)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Deutsche Bank’s Jorge Beristain and Chris Terry released their earnings preview for the gold miners–including Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG), Franco-Nevada (FNV), and Coeur Mining (CDE)–and conclude that only one gold miner deserves a Buy rating: Newmont Mining (NEM). They explain why:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Given revised commodity deck forecasts (particularly for Steel and Gold) and improved Balance Sheet health (Steels, Precious and Industrials Metals) we are upgrading our ratings on several stocks in our coverage. We generally favor companies that have already initiated specific self-help, have low-cost assets and are less exposed to China supply and demand dynamics. In Steels, we have increased our rating from Hold to Buy on Nucor (NUE) and from Sell to Hold on US Steel. We have also upgraded Kinross Gold (KGC) to a Hold on valuation…On higher-than-peer valuations, we reiterate Sell-rated Coeur Mining (CDE), Franco-Nevada (FNV), Goldcorp (GG), Teck Resources (TCK) and highly leveraged AK Steel given preference to issue further equity if possible.

investment ideas: Globalstar Inc.(GSAT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Nicholas Rossolillo]

Globalstar (NYSEMKT:GSAT) has been growing its total sales, but still struggles with its bottom line. 2016 revenue increased 7%,but another round of financing could be needed to keep things afloat, as operating margin is still deep in the red. The company is making some headway, but time could be running out for the satellite communications provider.
