Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Infinera Corporation(INFN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Billy Duberstein]

What a year 2016 was for Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN) shareholders. The stock plunged over 50% last year, as its multiyear run of accelerating 20%-30% growth rates ground to a halt. The story changed from that of a high-growth technology company riding the secular trend of exploding data and bandwidth needs to one of stagnating revenues, profits turning to losses, increased competition, and end customers pausing investments in optical networks.

Investing in the tech sector can be tricky. Competition tends to be fierce, which makes it difficult to stay one step ahead. Two companies that have a strong history of maintaining their edge are Skyworks Solutions(NASDAQ:SWKS)and Infinera(NASDAQ:INFN). Both of these businesses have been taking market share in their industries for years, which is impressive. But which of these two tech companies is the better investment today? Let’s review the bull thesis for each company so we can make an informed decision.

The vast majority of Americans are no fans of Russian president Vladimir Putin, but despite a well-oiled anti-Russia machine in Washington his approval level has nearly doubled, according to a Gallup poll released on Feb. 21. The results stand in a stark contrast to the views of many Republicans, led by Arizona Senator John McCain who was recently in Germany to criticize President Trump’s attempt at detente with the Kremlin. McCain, his colleague Lindsey Graham and a small handful of former Russia-based business owners have led a very public media effort against a Russia reset.

The retail sector has been a treacherous one over the past few years, due to heavy competition from e-tailers and cutthroat competition among brick-and-mortar players. Therefore, it’s easy for investors to step on landmines across the sector if they’re not careful. Today, we’ll examine two retail stocks that could cause you to lose a lot of money — Macy’s (NYSE:M) and Under Armour (NYSE:UAA) (NYSE:UA).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

    Under Armour’s class-C shares dropped 3.2% to $18.43, while the S&P 500. Under Armour’s (UAA) class-A shares fell 2% to $19.86.

Under Armour fired about 24 employees in its Connected Fitness unit, with most of them located in Copenhagen. That seems like a big drop for such a small act, but these days it seems like everyone except Barron’s is looking for a reasons to dump Under Armour’s shares.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Under Armour (UAA) have tumbled nearly 60% during the past 12 months as the once high-flying company slashed its expected growth rate. Under Armour is scheduled to report earnings tomorrow, however, and some investors are betting that the release will help turn things around for the company’s stock.

Jeff Schear/Getty Images for Under Armour

Don’t get your hopes up, write Canaccord Genuity analysts Camilo Lyon and Pallav Saini, who contend this won’t be the quarter Under Armour turns things around. They explain why:

The trifecta of headwinds that plagued UA last year (overexposure to sporting goods, overexposure to NA, and overexposure to performance apparel) has not abated, in our opinion. While UA is working to diversify its channel mix as evidenced by its recent entry into Kohl’s (KSS) (and forthcoming entry into DSW (DSW) and Famous Footwear later this year), our checks suggest the apparel segmentation efforts have fallen short of expectations. In addition, we are concerned about the lackluster trends in footwear (and Curry) as it is a key element to the growth story. Specifically, we believe the combination of a lack of newness/differentiation in the Curry 3 coupled with too many releases too soon at a higher price point ($140) resulted in tepid Q1 sales. The latest Curry 3Zero release at $120 appears to be doing modestly better. We highly regard the brand and its long-term growth prospects; however, the product and geographic diversification occurring now will take time to yield results. As such, we remain cautious on UA heading into its 1Q17 report on Thursday, April 27 BMO.

Shares of Under Armour have gained 1.3% to $19.78 at 3:06 p.m. today, while Kohl’s has climbed 1.4% to $39.92, and DSW has risen 1.3% to $21.14.

Top 10 Stocks To Own For 2018: Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Still, there are instances of limited appetite for diversified Europe ETFs, particularly those with significant U.K. exposure. The Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) hasn't added (or lost) any capital since June 20. That ETF devotes 31.4 percent of its weight to U.K. stocks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Perhaps the largest ETF dedicated to tracking French stocks should be getting more attention. In a year in which ETFs tracking the PIIGS economies are struggling, EWQ has been solid. The France ETF's 2.7 percent year-to-date gain is slightly ahead of the comparable Germany ETF and more than twice as good as the Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK).

  • [By Tom Aspray, Senior Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The US stock market is still leading with the Spyder Trust (SPY) up 18.6%, while the European markets (VGK) are now up close to 10% for the year, as they have gotten a nice boost in the past three weeks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Here is a dichotomy. Global small-caps are performing admirably. The WisdomTree Europe SmallCap Dividend Fund (NYSE: DFE) is an example of a Europe ETF that is defying some unfavorable trends. DFE is down 3.5 percent year-to-date. That sounds bad, but it is far better than what investors have been treated to with diversified, large-cap Europe ETFs. The Vanguard Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) and the iShares Europe ETF (NYSE: IEV) are down an average of 5.3 percent this year.

stock market calendar

Roxgold (OTC:ROGFF) reported results for the three months ending September 30, a quarter in which the company was still operating in pre-commercial mode. However, commercial production was declared starting October 1 and the current quarter will be Roxgold’s first as a commercial gold producer.

Operational data points provided as part of the Q3 MD&A, in combination with the technical reports filed on SEDAR already allow an educated estimate of what lies ahead. And what emerges, based on our interpretation of available data, is a low-cost gold miner that will be highly profitable from the word go. We expect the company to be free cash flow positive already in Q4, with an exceedingly manageable balance sheet and ample organic growth opportunities.

But there is a catch: on paper this is not a gold producer just yet. 45,390 ounces of gold have been produced at Yaramoko already, operational metrics are tracking or exceeding name plate levels, and costs are set to outperform FS targets, but all of this has been achieved on a pre-commercial basis. Consequently, sales proceeds have been capitalized, cash flows have been negative, and the underlying financial performance has not been visible to market participants scanning just the headlines. Furthermore, there are many institutional investors who would have recognized the potential, but are bound by rules which do not allow them to buy development companies. These institutions, as they become aware of this story, will need to wait until Q4 results are out and the company has formally morphed into a reporting gold producer.

Where we are concerned: 1. Ex-Joint Strike Fighter portfolio is average. There are few major growth differentiators after F-35; and actually headwinds in Aeronautics specifically, including C-5 and F-16. 2. Consensus EPS and cash flow estimate headwinds. The final Leidos Holdings (LDOS)-Lockheed Martin numbers are likely dilutive to 2016, so guidance will come down. The $1.5bn 2018 cash pension contribution means lower 2018 free cash and a weaker 5-year cash trajectory than peers. 3. Valuation tough. Lockheed Martin trades at 24X CY17E P/E ex pension. While we shy away from valuation concerns at the trough of the Defense cycle, this is more expensive than other Defense stocks.

stocks in the news

Poor Bill Ackman. Shares of Herbalife (HLF), a stock he loves to short, have soared more than 10% today–putting the stock up 40% for the past 12 months–after the multi-level marketer reported better-than-expected earnings last night and said it was close to reaching a settlement over its business practices with the Federal Trade Commission. S&P Global Market Intelligence’s Joe Agnese has the details:

Bloomberg News

We lift our 12-month target by $16 to $72, applying a P/E of 15.2X, in-line with Herbalife’s 5-year average, to our 2016 EPS estimate of $4.75, up from $4.50. We lift our 2017 EPS estimate by $0.26 to $5.20. We see valuation benefiting from moderating regulatory risk and improving volumes, despite weakness in Brazil. An FTC deal may be near, in our view, as Herbalife notes talks are in advanced stages which may result in a monetary payment and injunctive relief. Q1 adjusted EPS of $1.36 vs. $1.29 is $0.29 above our estimate on forex-neutral net sales growth of 11%, above our 5.5% estimate

stocks in the news: Trina Solar Limited(TSL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Elizabeth Balboa]

The firm has a Sell rating on First Solar, JA Solar Holdings and Trina Solar Limited (ADR) (NYSE: TSL). It maintains a NC rating on SunPower Corporation, Canadian Solar and JinkoSolar Holding.

  • [By Spencer Israel]

Axiom Capital Managing Director Gordon Johnson upgraded the entire alternative energy sector from Market Underweight to Market Overweight and upgraded SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY) from Sell to Hold and Trina Solar Limited (ADR) (NYSE: TSL), Yingli Green Energy Holding Co Ltd (ADR) (NYSE: YGE) and JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NASDAQ: JASO) from Sell to Buy.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is integrated solar-power products maker Trina Solar (TSL), which is set to release numbers on next Monday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Trina Solar to report revenue of $645.68 million on earnings of 15 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Trina Solar is extremely high at 24.5%. That means that out of the 76.94 million shares in the tradable float, 18.88 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they’re looking for, then shares of TSL could easily rip sharply higher post-earnings as the bears move to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, TSL is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $8.67 to $9.04 a share. Shares of TSL have now started to rebound off those support levels and it’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

If you’re bullish on TSL, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.72 to $11.19 a share and then above its 50-day moving average of $11.17 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 5.17 million shares. If that breakout materializes post-earnings, then TSL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $12.49 to $14 a share, or even $14.50 to $15 a share.

I would avoid TSL or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below some near-term support levels at $10 a share to those double bottom support levels at $9.04 to $8

stocks in the news: OncoMed Pharmaceuticals, Inc.(OMED)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

OncoMed Pharmaceuticals (OMED) has lost more than a third of its value Monday, after Bayer decided not to exercise its option to license the firms Phase II-ready WNT pathway inhibitors Vantictumab and Ipafricept, which treat pancreatic cancer.

    Pixabay

That wasnt the only bad news, however, as the firms randomized-controlled Phase II “YOSEMITE” trial of pancreatic cancer drug demcizumab also missed its primary endpoint.

Leerinks Michael Schmidt and his team reiterated a Market Perform rating on the stock Monday, and lowered their price target from $10 to $6 on the news, calling it a “double setback” for OncoMed.

    More detail from the note:

This is a major setback for OMED and in our view for the cancer stem cell targets more broadly, which have been a difficult area of drug development. We’ve been cautious on the probability-of-success of these agents and see more promise on OMED’s recent efforts in building a second area of focus in immuno-oncology. Going forward, OMED plans to review and prioritize its R&D pipeline after results from the still pending tarextumab Phase II “PINNACLE” trial in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and data from the demcizumab “DENALI” trial in NSCLC are available in 2Q17. We remain MP rated in light of the uncertainties around OMED’s pipeline and strategy at this point. We previously assigned a 30% probability of success (POS) to demcizumab which we now have removed from our model. We also think chances that CELG will opt-into this program are slim and we have removed associated POS-adjusted milestone payments from our model. OMED has cash to run operations through 3Q18.

OncoMed is down 36.1% to $5.60 this afternoon.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

OncoMed Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: OMED) dropped nearly 44% Monday to post a new 52-week low of $4.94 after closing Friday at $8.76. The stock’s 52-week high is $15.49. Volume of about 3.3 million shares was nearly 20 times the daily average of around 182,000. A proposed deal with Bayer AG fell through and one of the company’s drugs failed a phase 2 clinical trial.

Top 5 Stocks To Own For 2018

Sears is soaring today, and there is, thankfully, an obvious reason (I hate when there isn’t one). In this case, it’s the news that Bruce Berkowitz’s Fairholme Capital Management bought 286,000 shares of the stock from March 23 to March 27, following CEO Eddie Lampert’s purchase of more than 500,000 last week.

Getty Images

That’s sent shares of Sears soaring 11% yesterday, and another 17% to $11.02 at 3:30 p.m. today, helped, no doubt, by investors covering their short positions in the stock.

We get why investors would be enthusiastic about these purchases. When insiders buy shares its a sign that they’re putting their money where there mouths are, and willing to bet on the prospects of the company. That was the case when JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon bought shares of his bank near the market low in Feb. 2016.
