Best Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

April 28, 2017: Markets opened mixed on Friday following a weak report on first-quarter GDP growth (up 0.7%). Even the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite couldn’t hold on to an early gain and trailed southward all day. Tech and energy were Friday’s best sectors while telecom and financials led the losers. WTI crude oil for June delivery settled at $49.33 a barrel, up 0.7% on the day but posted a monthly loss of 2.5%. June gold added 0.2% for the day to settle at $1,268.30, finishing the week down 1.6% and the month up about 1.3%. Equities were headed for a lower close shortly before the bell as the DJIA traded down 0.22% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.22%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 0.02%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Friday was Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) which traded down 3.78% at $36.01. The stock’s 52-week range is $29.50 to $38.45. Volume was about 90% above the daily average of around 23.6 million shares. The chipmaker announced first-quarter results last night that were good, but not good enough.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Wednesday was Newfield Exploration Co. (NYSE: NFX) which traded down about 7% at $28.44. The stocks 52-week range is $24.41 to $50.00. Volume was 2.5 million versus the daily average of 2.7 million shares.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The large cap E&Ps we cover raised ~ $6.5 billion of equity in 2015 and are likely to consider additional issuance in 2016. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) raised $1.3 billion on January 5th and Hess Corp. (HES) raised $1.5 billion of equity/equity-linked earlier this month. We think highly leveraged companies such as Devon Energy,Encana andRange Resources (RRC) and companies with a large deficit (before asset sales), such asAnadarko Petroleum and Devon Energy, are most likely to consider raising equity. Additionally, we believe companies such as WPX Energy (WPX), Southwestern Energy (SWN), Marathon Oil, Continental Resources (CLR),Noble Energy and Newfield Exploration (NFX) could issue equity while several levered companies may be unwilling or unable to access equity markets. We do not think Apache, Canadian Natural Resource, EOG Resources (EOG), Occidental Petroleum orPioneer Natural Resources are likely to issue equity this year.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was an up-and-down day for the stock market, which lost substantial ground early in the day only to climb back toward the unchanged mark by the end of the session. A slight rise for the Dow Jones Industrials led to yet another record-high close, and although other major market benchmarks weren’t quite as lofty, they nevertheless finished with only modest losses on the day. Generally favorable news and sentiment helped the market bounce back during the day, but some stocks still finished lower. Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX), Global Blood Therapeutics (NASDAQ:GBT), and Nautilus (NYSE:NLS) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Large Caps. Our E&P coverage is pricing in $61/bbl WTI and $3.30 gas, and with a lower crude forecast the group is looking less compelling. We argue names that continue to demonstrate resource improvement at the low-end of the cost curve, namely in the Permian and STACK remain attractive, such as Concho Resources (CXO), Devon Energy (DVN), Newfield Exploration (NFX) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). Noble (NBL) remains a compelling value, though has yet to commit to an accelerated US onshore drilling program.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: Continental Resources, Inc.(CLR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Continental Resources Inc. (NYSE: CLR) was raised to Outperform from Neutral at Macquarie on December 14, and on December 12 Credit Suisse started it with an Outperform rating and assigned a $57 price target. The 52-week range for the energy giant is $29.08 to $53.57, and shares were recently trading at $48.56. Continental Resources has a consensus analyst target of about $51 now.

Beta Should Lead At The Start of A Rally: Best ideas in the first leg up: Marathon Oil, Devon Energy (DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (APC), and Continental Resources (CLR). If OPEC announces a cut, whether moderate or deep, we expect that in the initial move up, moderate value beta names, like Marathon Oil, Devon Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, andContinental Resources will lead. For a $5 increase in oil prices, we estimate 2017 cash flow per share would increase 12-18% for these stocks vs. the remainder of the group at 12%. Of these four, short interest is modest for all exceptContinental Resources at 25%, among the highest in our universe. Outperformance of these names should be driven by investors adding to long positions, not short covering.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy For 2018: Natural Gas(NG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By William Romov]

Over the last year, the number of short positions on gold stocks has fallen. One of these stocks is a Canadian gold mining company called NovaGold Resources Inc. (NYSE: NG). In the last 12 months, the volume of short bets on the stock declined 79%, to 522,400. This shows a shift in sentiment from bearish to bullish for gold.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of Canadian gold mining stocks, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) (NYSEMKT:NG) and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) are often the first names to come to mind. And well they should. Yamana Gold is a $2.5 billion giant, and NovaGold Resources seems to have been around forever.

Those two icons aren’t the only way to tap into Canada’s sizeable gold mining industry though. There’s a small, up-and-coming player called Taranis Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNREF, TSX:TRO) that could end up becoming another key fixture of the country’s mining landscape.

Taranis develops mineral deposits into mine-ready projects. Its primary project right now — and it’s enough to keep the company plenty busy for the next several years — is the Thor property located near Trout Lake, British Columbia. NI 43-101 resource reports (indicated and inferred)suggest Thor contains 6.9 million ounces of silver, 35,000 ounces gold, 57 million pounds of lead, 79.4 million pounds of zinc and 3.3 Million pounds of copper (roughly a 14 million ounce silver equivalent (“AgEq”) deposit*) laying in wait in a way that lends itself to the establishment of a low-cost, open pit mining operation. That’s roughly $300 million worth of marketable metals, and the estimates have been steadily getting bigger as Tanaris does more survey work.

And 2017 could be a real breakout year for Taranis, as a lot of the work that’s been done to date starts to mean something. It’s got big exploration plans for this year… this spring/summer to be exact.

The Phase 1 program was completed in September of last year, setting the stage for a more defined and much bigger Phase 2 definition-drilling within the next several weeks. This Phase 2 definition drilling slated for the middle of this year will drill down to between 6000 m and 10,000 m.

These so-called first generation target areas are generally well understood areas based on sound geological information includ

In January, my True Wealth Systems computers alerted me to the big story the rest of the world was missing…   They told me a stealth bull market was beginning in Europe.   You see, European stocks are staging a major breakout this year. And that's why the computers behind my high-priced True Wealth Systems service are signaling now is the time to buy.   But I've got an even more important reason to own Europe today… one that could mean triple-digit gains if history is any guide.   Let me explain…   Let's think about two different investments… We'll call them Investment A and Investment B.   A and B are similar… but not identical. They generally move up and down together… But they don't track each other perfectly.   You can think about it in terms of the housing market. For example, if your neighbor's house goes up in value, then chances are yours will go up, too.

stock information: VistaGen Therapeutics, Inc. (VTGN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Four ideas turned up in this screen that might be of interest (prices as of February 9th close):

Heron Therapeutics (NASDAQ:HRTX) by ONeil Trader – published February 3rd, 2017, $525M Market cap, down ~2% since publication, author’s price target offers 130% upside. HRTX isn’t a generic drug provider, but its CINV franchise vs. the growth of a new drug gives it a similar sort of profile, and arguably a favorable risk/reward; commenters were mostly positive on the thesis. VistaGen Therapeutics (OTC:VTGN) by Logical Assessment – published July 29, 2016, $24M market cap, down 16% since publication, author’s price target offers 100%+ upside. This is obviously deeper into the speculative pile, but if the author’s thesis holds about VistaGen’s unique angle in the antidepressant drug space, comparable deals suggest good upside. (Of course, it’s always dangerous to rely solely on comparables). Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (NYSE:RDY) by Buddy Lyons – published July 5, 2016, $7.6B market cap, down ~13% since publication, author’s price target offers just shy of 100% upside. Dr. Reddy’s is a more obvious comparable to TEVA, with a generics business but also a manufacturing business and a proprietary products branch. The company bought a divestiture package of drugs from TEVA as part of the Allergan/Actavis deal. A big overhang was an FDA warning letter; the FDA is due to reinspect facilities this month or next, which could resolve that one way or another. Lannett (NYSEMKT:LCI) by Lateral Capital Management – published May 27, 2016, $750M market cap, down ~9% since publication, author’s price target offers 75% upside. LCI’s trading had been 90% correlated with Valeant, but Lateral Capital Management argues that the correlation is unjustified. The article does a deep dive into the company’s valuation and credit risk, and was well received at the time, even if the market hasn’t agreed…yet.

I also checked to see if there are any ideas starting to play out on the short si

Top China Stocks To Buy For 2018

China has once again warned Donald Trump, and China’s warnings are becoming more personal…

Earlier today (Monday), the Chinese state-run newspaper Global Times warned President-elect Donald Trump that Beijing will “take revenge” if he ditches Washington’s long-held commitment to the “One China” policy.

The One China policy asserts that there is only one state called “China,” despite the existence of two governments that claim to be “China.” As a policy, this means that countries seeking diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China (mainland China) must break official relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and vice versa.

As far as the U.S. is concerned, it acknowledges – and has acknowledged for over four decades – that there is one China and that Taiwan is a part of China.

Top China Stocks To Buy For 2018: Paragon Offshore plc (PGNPQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Paragon Offshore’s (OTCPK:PGNPQ) former management’s audacious efforts to omit parts of the senior secured lenders by deeming them unimpaired and instead pay out the majority of the company’s cash to junior unsecured bondholders by presenting a set of entirely unrealistic business forecasts to the court. Fortunately, in case of Paragon Offshore, the bankruptcy judge recognized the framing and accordingly denied confirmation of the company’s plan of reorganization, effectively sending Paragon Offshore back to the drawing board. Consequently, management was ousted after the failure. I have covered the Paragon Offshore saga in a series of articles over the past few quarters, so interested investors might want to take a look at this highly fascinating and still evolving case study.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

With even brand new rigs struggling to find work, the jig was soon up for owners of old equipment, like Paragon Offshore (OTCPK:PGNPQ), which is currently undergoing its second debt restructuring in less than three years of independent existence. Likewise, drillers with a fondness for aggressive use of debt were soon in trouble, most notably, former high-flier Seadrill (SDRL) and its little brother North Atlantic Drilling (NADL), which will no doubt file for restructuring within months. As a consequence of the crisis, the OSD industry now has a number of participants without a large debt burden, either new entrants like Borr Drilling, or established competitors that have had debt reduced in a restructuring, such as Ocean Rig (ORIG), to be followed within this year by others, almost certainly including each of SDRL, NADL, and Pacific Drilling (PACD).

For the last few days, oil prices have been trading in a very narrow range between $42 and $45 a barrel. They won’t be staying there for long.

You see, there are two factors keeping prices locked in that range. One is short term, here in the United States.

And it was just resolved today…

The other is OPEC’s long-term strategy to crowd out competing oil producers. Rumors would have you believe this will change before the end of the month, at the upcoming International Energy Forum (IEF) summit in Algiers.

That’s not going to happen…

Yet.

Here’s when OPEC will change its strategy… and what the Algiers meeting is really about…

All is not lost for retail, however. Cramer continued to recommend the closeout and discount chains like TJX Stores (TJX) , Ollie’s Bargain Outlet (OLLI) and Burlington Stores (BURL) . He was also bullish on those who cater to the millennials, like Six Flags (SIX) , Dave & Busters (PLAY) and Foot Locker (FL) , where trying on shoes never seems to go out of style.

  • [By JJ Kinahan]

While competitive dynamics have been ongoing for years, Nike’s recent selloff was widely attributed to weak results from Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE: FL) earnings report in August. According to its annual report, 68% of all merchandise Foot Locker purchased in fiscal 2016 was from Nike. Richard Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Foot Locker, partially attributed the weak quarter to sales of some recent top styles of premium sneakers coming in well below management’s expectations. Johnson also cited “the limited availability of innovative new products” as another factor that affected the company’s results.

  • [By WWW.MONEYSHOW.COM]

While we appreciate near-term potential at Foot Locker (FL), what stands out is its consistency. Like any good distance runner, Foot Locker has learned to keep a steady pace, explains Richard Moroney, editor of Dow Theory Forecasts.

  • [By JACK HOUGH]

Barron’s has recommended Foot Locker (FL) shares several times in recent years, going back to 2009, when the shares traded for about $10. They recently fetched $64, up 12% since our most recent story (“Foot Locker: Still Running Fast,” March 9). They hit $75 in September, and could regain lost ground and then some over the next year.

Foot Locker is benefitting from a long shift toward casual and athletic fashion. It also has a close relationship with Nike (NKE) and secures plenty of exclusive shoes, which helps protect the business from being undercut by Amazon. Nike shares have jumped 26% over the past six months on stellar earnings reports. That stock goes for over 30 times earnings, reflecting investor expectations of rapid growth for years to come. Foot Locker shares, at less than 16 times earnings, offer inexpensive exposure to Nike’s success. The retailer is also helping itself with store remodelings and a turnaround of its Lady Foot Locker chain. It has invested in recent years in Europe, where footwear sales are highly fragmented. That could pay off when Europe’s economy rebounds. For now, Wall Street predicts low-double-digit earnings growth over the next two years, and Foot Locker has made a habit of hurdling estimates.

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE: FL) posted stronger-than-expected results for its third quarter.

Foot Locker posted quarterly adjusted earnings of $0.87 per share on revenue of $1.87 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.80 per share on revenue of $1.83 billion. Its same-store sales fell 3.7 percent during the quarter.

  • [By Chris Lange]

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Monday was Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE: FL) which traded down 7.5% at $31.82. The stocks 52-week range is $31.72 to $79.43. Volume was about 22.7 million versus the daily average of 4.4 million shares.
