Best Financial Stocks To Buy For 2018

Mitek Systems (NASDAQ: MITK) was recently named one of Forbes fastest growing companies and was added to the Russell 2000 index in June. The San Diego, CA based company is a pioneer in the fintech space and has seen increased traction and adoption mainly in its ID verification technology – which is crucial given the high levels of regulation in the financial services sector. Executives at the company have estimated Mitek’s mobile deposit market share to be about 65% and is projected to grow at 20% next year. Moreover, Mitek’s mobile verification market opportunity is projected to be worth close to $4 billion.

Investment Thesis:

Mitek has gained a dominant market share in an important fintech niche by offering a compelling value proposition. With increasing KYC (Know Your Customer) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulation, financial institutions need a cost-effective way to verify customer’s identity when onboarding takes place. P2P business lender Kabbage was able to reduce its customer rejection rate from 3% to 0.5% by implementing Mitek’s mobile ID verification solution. Using Mitek’s ID verification solution, a leading payments company was able to lift temporary restrictions on 92% of its users in a matter of minutes. Despite these positive customer outcomes, Mitek shares have dropped more than 20% over the last six months, creating a compelling entry point. The average analyst price target for Mitek is $9.25, a nearly 60% upside from current levels.

The king of passive funds is expanding its presence in the active space. Vanguard said it plans to launch six factor-based ETFs and one factor-based mutual fund — five of which are targeted at financial advisors and institutional investors seeking to maximize value, momentum, liquidity and quality or to minimize volatility.

The funds have expense ratios from $0.13 to $0.18 and should begin trading in the first quarter of 2018. They represent the first actively managed ETFs to be sold by Vanguard in the United States; the firm currently offers factor ETFs in Canada and the United Kingdom.

The mutual fund and ETFs will offer a multi-factor approach. It would have an investment minimum of $50,000.

“Our factor-based fund offerings serve as a valuable extension of our low-cost active lineup, providing additional ways for suitable investors to help meet their long-term objectives by targeting exposure to specific factors in the market,” said Vanguard Chief Investment Officer Greg Davis, in a statement.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Invest In Right Now: American International Group Inc.(AIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

American International Group (AIG) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after its earnings fell well short of the Street consensus.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    AIG dropped 8.9% to $60.85 today, while the S&P 500 gained 0.5% to 2,349.25.

Yes, AIG’s earnings were bad. It reported an operating loss of $2.72 a share, missing forecasts for a profit of 42 cents, according to Bloomberg. And it didn’t help that John Paulson’s Paulson & Co. cut its stake in the insurer.

You’ll notice the forecast is different than what it was in my earlier post on AIG–and an AIG spokesperson even reached out to tell me that the consensus, at least according to FactSet, should had been for a loss of 61 cents a share. Why the confusion? RBC’s Mark Dwelle and Scott Heleniak have your answer:

In reporting results AIG has recast all of its business segments, transferring various pieces to a Legacy unit, reallocating corporate expenses and net investment income as well as making some changes as to what is included within operating income, the most notable of which is that loss reserve discount effects in U.S. Commercial Insurance (and the Legacy unit) are now excluded from Operating Income. Accordingly, comparisons to prior reported results, and to some extent our 4Q16 estimates, require some reconciliation.

Macquarie’sAmit Kumar considers the bull and bear cases on AIG:

On 2/14, after market close, AIG reported a Q4 operating loss of $2.72 per share vs. our estimate of a $0.52 loss and street consensus of a $0.54 loss. Results are not directly comparable to street consensus due to lack of unanimity in terms of reserve adjustment estimates. Results included a higher than estimated $5.6 billion or $3.56/share of adverse development. The company had previously announced the possibility of a material reserve charge in the quarter. The bulls on the stock would note that this quar

BMO’s Charles Sebaski explains why he upgraded American International Group (AIG) to Outperform from market Perform:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

AIG has been trading at discount to its tangible book given its mid-single digit return profile; however, we expect AIGs valuation to keep increasing with its improving return profile. We are now forecasting AIG to generate a 9.9% operating return on tangible common equity (ROtE) in 2018, which would be a 450 bp improvement from 2016. A double-digit return profile warrants the 1x multiple that we are applying to its tangible book value per share. While we expect AIGs return profile to benefit from lower taxes, we also expect the companys life and retirement business to improve from the rising interest rates as those spread businesses are more interest rate sensitive than the P&C business. That said, we expect continued improvement on both the loss and expense sides of the P&C as contributing factors to the ROtE improve.

BMO also upgraded Arch Capital Group (ACGL), Brown & Brown (BRO), and Travelers (TRV).

Shares of American International Group have declined 0.4% to $65.60 at 3:36 p.m. today, whileArch Capital Group has gained 2% to $87.90,Brown & Brown has advanced 0.5% to $44.65, andTravelers has risen 1.3% to $120.79.

Wednesday was yet another record-setting day for the stock market, as the Dow climbed triple digits and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite followed the venerable average to unprecedented heights. Economic data showing rising inflation made it more likely that the Federal Reserve will look to boost interest rates at its next Federal Open Market Committee meeting next month, and the ripples throughout the bond market sent many investors to consider stocks instead. Yet despite the substantial rally, some stocks missed out on the move higher, and American International Group (NYSE:AIG), Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK), and Movado Group (NYSE:MOV) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Wells Fargo & Company(WFC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

This jump primarily had to do with Berkshire’s stake in Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC), which rose 5.4% on Nov. 9 alone. This spike in the embattled bank’s shares added $1.7 billion to Buffett’s fortune in the span of 24 hours.

  • [By Gregg Greenberg]

Stocks of Wells Fargo (WFC) were up 4% last year, outperforming both the broader market and the overall financial sector. Erik Oja, equity analyst at S&P Capital IQ, said the megabank will shine even brighter in 2016 once higher interest rates kick in.

"We think Wells Fargo is best poised to benefit from higher rates due to its large deposit base and industry-leading loan growth," said Oja, adding that he expects much higher revenue growth in the coming year after a recent slowdown.

In addition to this, Warren Buffett has also built sizable positions in a number of major US banks.Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC), U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB)and Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS)have the leading positions in Berkshire Hathaways portfolio. In fact, Wells Fargo is Berkshire Hathaway’s second largest stock holding. In addition to this, Berkshire Hathaway also owns $5 billion worth of Bank of Americas preferred shares and warrants to buy 700 million of the banks ordinary shares at just $7.14 (current price $22.10) anytime until September 2021. These banks are positioned to become the biggest beneficiaries of the increase in interest rates. To get an idea of how this might happen, consider Bank of Americas forecast in which it predicted a $7.5 billion boost to annual net interest income following a 1-percentage-point increase in interest rates.

Analystshave digetsed the news, and are out withtheir takes on the quarter, and opinions run the gamut.

Evercore ISI’s John Pancari reiterated an Outperform rating and $60 price target on Wells:

A more conservative fee outlook (mainly mortgage) and modest tweak to B/S growth expectations led to a slight downside EPS revision to 2018. That said, expense efforts are now the greater focus given the n/t headwinds – but also the substantial opportunity to pare costs and limit pressure on returns. All eyes on the May 11 investor day.

Sandler O’Neil’sR. ScottSiefers reiterated a Hold rating and $55 price target:

WFCcontinues to address the sales scandal decisively and transparently, but too many uncertainties and issues remain. We are keeping our HOLD rating. We considerWFCs 1Q performance fine, but not its best. On the plus side, credit trends were very good, and a rebound in trading allowed total fees to come in better than we had foreseen (though we suspect that at least a portion of this Qs performance will normalize in coming periods). But the NIM only held firm (whereas we would have hoped to see at least a little expansion), loan growth was pretty weak, and costs came in higher than we had anticipated.

Raymond James’s David Long reiterated an Underweight rating:

The EPS beat was driven by a lower tax rate (management guided to a reversion) and a reserve release from improvement in energy-related credits, while the miss on expenses (deferred comp) outweighed the beat on fees (trading gains). Additionally, March retail banking gr

Top Medical Stocks To Watch For 2018

Back in September, Vitality Biopharma Inc (OTCMKTS:VBIO) CEO Robert Brooke officially announced his company would be entering the painkiller market, specifically taking aim at the development of an alternative to opioids. His specific words? “Opiates are one of the key classes of drugs we’re seeking to replace, or to make far less necessary, as our proprietary cannabosides could provide a potent alternative form of pain relief and help avoid, or greatly reduce, the use of opiates for the treatment of many conditions…”

The need is tremendous. Brooke’s letter/announcement went on to explain that roughly 80% of heroin users developed a drug habit starting with prescription opioid pain killers.

The timing was uncanny, for VBIO shareholders. A few days following the release of Brooke’s decision to take the company in new direction, Fox News published a story entitled “Medical marijuana programs may help cut opioid use.” It widely confirmed — and legitimized — the bulk of everything Brooke knows, and said. Namely, the Fox News story offered some encouraging data on the potential of medical marijuana…cannabis as an alternative painkiller in particular. Specifically, the commentary cited data from a recent submission to the American Journal of Public Health, which explained “The researchers found that the rates of opioid use decreased in adults ages 21 to 40 in states that had legalized medical marijuana and where residents with prescriptions could obtain cannabis from dispensaries or grow their own, compared to states that had legalized medical marijuana but did not yet have an operational program for people to obtain it.”

    Key holdings in ITA include…

Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) makes a full range of unmanned vehicles. That means it can cover air, land, and sea assignments for both military and commercial uses. The company is widely known for military drones like the Desert Hawk III, used by the U.K. military to surveil suspected terrorists. It also makes the Marlin, an oceangoing drone that can conduct underwater surveys and inspections. Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC) makes unmanned aircraft for defense applications naturally. It’s also collaborating with Yamaha Corp. (NYSE ADR: YAMCY) to develop an autonomous helicopter with onboard intelligence-gathering equipment for such civilian uses as search and rescue and forest-fire monitoring. Raytheon Co. (NYSE: RTN) is a great backend play because of its drone-support platform. The Common Ground Control System is an open-format control station that can be used to control all manner of UAVs. I expect the system to be adapted for commercial/industrial use as well.

As exciting as ITA’s drone exposure is, we also get a nice kicker with this ETF – defense spending.

My pick this week has created a faster, more centralized marketplace for bond traders… and it’s led by a guy who once worked the trading floors of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). Better yet, recently passed regulations could force traders’ hands in joining this new system.

Market Exchanges like the CME Group (Nasdaq: CME) have just started allowing trading in bitcoin futures and could attract an entirely new type of retail user as well as allowing institutional clients access to the bitcoin theme. Exchanges make their money on transactional volume, so a bursting of the bitcoin bubble wouldn’t necessarily mean weakness for shares.

Hot Financial Stocks To Invest In 2018: QCR Holdings Inc.(QCRH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

My favorite at the moment is QCR Holdings Inc. (NasdaqGM:QCRH).

Founded in 1993 and headquartered in Moline, IL, the bank has a strong regional lending base in Illinois and Iowa that should grow in line with the broader national economy. I particularly like the fact that the bank considers itself relationship-driven at a time when trust is in short supply.

Top Safest Stocks To Own For 2018

Few investments have the profit potential of penny stocks – defined as stocks that trade under $5 per share. Just take a look at Marathon Patent Group Inc. (Nasdaq: MARA), which climbed an astounding 341% during the four trading days of Thanksgiving week.

So today, we’re giving you five of the top penny stocks to buy for December 2017, which all have massive upside.

Two of them currently trade for less than a dollar. One of them even trades for less than a quarter.

While these stocks have huge profit potentials, you must keep in mind that penny stocks are speculative investments that often see big pullbacks after making large gains.

That’s why Money Morning Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald recommends that no more than 2% of your stock portfolio consist of such risky investments. And these are only investments for those willing to accept some risk.

But if you’re willing to take the risk, one of these stocks could bring you profits of over 500% next year.

Top Safest Stocks To Own For 2018: Rockwell Collins, Inc.(COL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Rockwell Collins (COL) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after the aerospace & defense company’s adjusted earnings topped analyst forecasts.

    Getty Images

Rockwell Collins gained 5.1% to $104.70 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% to 2,348.69. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) ticked up 0.1% to$65.41 as strength in Rockwell Collins and Honeywell International (HON) offset earnings-related weakness in General Electric (GE). Honeywell, which also reported today, gained 2.7% to $127.08, while General Electric dropped 2.4% to $29.55.

CFRA’s Jim Corridore offers his take on Rockwell Collins’ earnings:

We raise our 12-month target price by $10 to $120, 18.4X our FY 18 (Sep.) EPS estimate of $6.52 (raised today from $5.80), in line with COL’s 3-year average. We think this balances commercial aerospace (which carry higher P/Es) and military (lower P/E) peers. We raise our FY 17 EPS estimate to $6.05 from $5.49, in the middle of COL’s FY 17 (Sep.) guidance of $5.95-$6.15. COL Q1 adjusted EPS of $1.27 vs. $1.30 was three cents shy of our forecast. We are positive on demand drivers and completed acquisition of B/E Aerospace increases COL’s commercial aerospace market share.

Rockwell Collins’ market capitalization rose to $13.7 billion today from $16.2 billion yesterday.

Hot Blue Chip Stocks For 2018

I will get right to it. After describing the reasons behind its meteoric rise and the discussing why this name was one of my top blue chip top picks for 2017, it comes down to performance. Just this morning Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), as well as other large banks, are out with key earnings reports. This matters for the 2017 call and it matters for the share price which has skyrocketed in the last few months. It’s about the performance. Performance not just on the top and bottom lines but also in several key metrics that I follow closely for all major banks. The bank has come a long way from it facing extinction, and it took we the people to keep it alive. Today Bank of America is one of the largest banks in the United States by assets and yes, it has recovered from the Great Recession. Is it firing on all cylinders like it was pre-recession? No, unfortunately it is not, but it is getting there. Can you stick with the name? We need to examine the company’s most recent earnings and key metrics to make that determination.

LMT had been in the presidential spotlight lately due to the cost of its F-35 stealth fighter jet program. The company worked with President Trump, who called the jet “overtly expensive”, to reduce expenses and bagged a multi-billion dollar Department of Defense order for 90 of the jets. LMT’s aeronautics division accounted for roughly 40% of its sales in the last quarter.

As we’ve learned with Boeing (BA) , Lockheed Martin (LMT) , General Motors (GM) and countless others, the correct response is to start buying.

This is not the first time Trump has been critical of drugmakers and drug pricing. But the fact remains that to make any substantive changes, the President will need Congress, and Congress’ track record against drug companies clearly shows that this is a battle that cannot be won.

Top 5 Value Stocks To Watch For 2018: Broadcom Corporation(BRCM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shauna O’Brien]

Susquehanna reported on Tuesday that it has raised its rating on Broadcom Corporation (BRCM).

The firm has upgraded BRCM from “Neutral” to “Positive,” and has lifted the company’s price target from $33 to $35. This price target suggests a 23% upside from the stock’s current price of $26.91.

Analyst Chris Caso commented: “Our downgrade of BRCM in May was predicated on already high Street expectations on handsets and no notable improvement in networking to drive upside. We think expectations and the stock price have now been sufficiently reset ahead of what we expect to be catalysts in 2014 including the iPhone 6 product cycle, potential improvement in networking and the impact from the recent Renesas acquisition. In addition, after several years of overspending on their handset initiatives, we think we are now closer to the point where the company either captures a return on that investment or is forced to moderate spending either of which benefit profitability. We see the upcoming December analyst meeting as a potential intermediate catalyst.”

Broadcom shares were up 38 cents, or 1.41%, during pre-market trading Tuesday. The stock is down 19% YTD.
