Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2018

Social media outlets are currently awash with claims that 2016 was arguably a “dumpster fire year” for many folks – but it certainly was not bad financially for famed investor Warren Buffett.

Shares of Buffett’s firm Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.A; BRK.B) skyrocketed 20% in 2016, helping to boost the “Oracle of Omaha’s” personal fortune by $12.3 billion thanks to his personal holdings in the company.

In fact, Buffett gained more than any other billionaire in the United States this year, Forbes.com reported Dec. 27. His net worth is now $74.2 billion – just $10 billion short of what the richest man in America, Bill Gates, is worth.

But what’s perhaps more surprising than Buffett’s massive wealth bump over the past 12 months is the very cause responsible for its occurrence…

Best Energy Stocks To Own Right Now

Wednesday was a mixed day for the stock market, as the Dow Jones Industrials dropped by triple digits but other major benchmarks fared much better. Crude oil prices fell nearly $2 per barrel to $50.50, and that hurt energy companies, along with a poor earnings report from technology giant IBM. Yet the broader market held up better, and the Nasdaq Composite actually gained ground. In particular, some good news from a few individual companies helped hold the markets up, and CalAmp (NASDAQ:CAMP), Lithia Motors (NYSE:LAD), and Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

CalAmp makes a connection

Shares of CalAmp jumped 14% after the company reported solid fiscal fourth-quarter financial results late Tuesday. The machine-to-machine communications company enjoyed a 22% rise in revenue, and although CalAmp posted a net loss on a GAAP basis, adjusted earnings were better than some investors had expected. Guidance from the company was in line with what shareholders were looking to see, and CEO Michael Burdiek was pleased with the progress that CalAmp has made with respect to expanding both the scope of its product lines and service offerings along with its geographical reach. With many investors continuing to believe that the Internet of Things could provide huge long-term growth opportunities, CalAmp appears to be moving in the right direction.

NVIDIA made it to the Drucker Institute’s Management Top 250 ranking for the most effectively managed company. The company features at the 10 position in the rankings on most metrics which houses other tech giants like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). The effectiveness of the management can also be seen in the company’s financial results as well as the stock performance. The rankings are based on the core principles of Peter Drucker ( often applauded as the father of modern management) like customer satisfaction, employee engagement and development, innovation, social responsibility and financial strength. This is another indication that the fundamental story of NVIDIA has not changed and the recent sell-off could mostly be a case of rotation in the market and profit booking. NVIDIA’s long-term growth story still remains intact.

Top 10 Casino Stocks To Watch For 2018: Kohl’s Corporation(KSS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

It was a rough 2016 holiday season for brick-and-mortar retailers. Department store shares got thumped last week after Macy’s (NYSE:M) and Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS) both lowered their full-year earnings guidance and said their comparable-stores sales dropped. Those two stocks fell by double digits.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Kohl’s (KSS) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after offering earnings guidance that was well below analyst forecasts.

    Getty Images

    Kohl’sdropped 19% to $42.01 today, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.1% to 2,269.00.

RBC’s Brian Tunick and Bilun Boyner worry that the bear case gas been revived:

Kohl’s reported Holiday comps of -2%, below our model for -0.5%, as sales remained volatile through the quarter. Similar to early commentary by peers, stronger sales for Black Friday and the week before Christmas were offset by softness in early November and December. In line with Q3, the strongest categories were men’s, home, and footwear while accessories was most challenging.

In addition to the sales downside,Kohl’s lowered its EPS guidance to $3.603.65 (from $3.804.00) to reflect lower than expected gross margins (we estimate were down 5060bps versus our prior model for up 40bp), which was mainly due to mix, timing of sales, and promotional environment as the company worked to exit the year with clean inventory positions (planning to end the year with inventories down mid-to-high SD)…

AlthoughKohl’s still has a reasonable 1H’17 opportunity with easy gross margin compares, Under Armour (UA) launch, and potential for a new CFO, we believe disappointing Holiday sales and the guidance cut removed most of the market’s excitement around a return to momentum, reviving the secular bear case around department stores and Kohl’s. Maintaining Underperform and lowering price target to $42.

Kohl’s market capitalization fell to $7.7 billion today from $9.2 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $673 million on sales of $19 billion in 2016.

Under Armour’s (UAA) guidance last month was so bad that the stock lost a quarter of its value in just one day. Some analysts have stuck with the company, but many more have downgraded it. But that’s in the past. Now, Under Armour’s products are hitting the shelves at Kohl’s (KSS), and some have worried that it could dilute Under Armour’s brand. Kohl’s, meanwhile, has had troubles of its own–its stock is down 23% during the past three months–as investors have worried about the internet destroying retail as we know it. Which begs the question: Are you in trouble when you’re looking at Kohl’s as a savior?

  • [By Chris Lange]

Kohls Corp. (NYSE: KSS) has faced an incredibly tough year so far, with its stock down nearly 25%, not to mention its facing the onslaught of e-commerce from sites like Amazon. Faced with the problem of adapt or die, Kohls is taking steps to change its format, but is it too late?

    The Bad

Bonds behaved poorly. The 10 year and long bond rose by between 3-4 basis points in yield. I bought a trading position in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond ETF (TLT) in front of a possible yearend pension rebalance. Big pharma stinks up the joint, again. Spec biotech is weakening again (Portola Pharmaceuticals PTLA, ACADIA Pharmaceuticals ACAD, etc.) Retail cant get out of its way. I am long JC Penney (JCP) and have trading positions in Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) . (Nike (NKE) , Nordstrom (JWN) , Lowe’s (LOW) are downside features).

    The Ugly

  • [By Craig Jones]

On CNBC's Fast Money Halftime Report, Jon Najarian spoke about bullish options activity in Kohl's Corporation (NYSE: KSS). He said traders were buying the May 42.5 calls and they were selling puts to finance the purchase. Najarian believes the stock is going to trade higher into the earnings and he decided to follow the trade. He is planning to hold the position for two to three weeks.

Best Safest Stocks To Invest In 2018

Stocks discussed on the in-depth session of Jim Cramer’s Mad Money TV Program, Tuesday, January 3.

Even though the market went higher on Tuesday, Cramer thinks this rally will not last long. “If you own a lot of stock, I say hold on. But if you are trying to get in, I suggest that you wait for better prices before pulling the trigger,” he said. Usually, the first trading day of a year relies on 401(k) investments. “There are many individuals who didn’t sell in 2016 believing that capital gains taxes must come down in 2017 under President Trump,” he added.

Another worry for Cramer is that oil still impacts stocks. Movement in oil prices takes the stocks with it. For the healthcare stocks, things look bright as some losers of 2016 bounced back on Tuesday. He also warned that the group could be one tweet away from a selloff.

The bigger question on his mind is, “Can the Trump rally last? One of the reasons why I think you might get a better opportunity to buy stocks than you had today is that I sense the Republicans may not be totally enthused about Trump’s desire to pass corporate tax reform, deregulation and a tax holiday for the repatriation of foreign assets,” he said.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market continued to climb sharply on Wednesday, sending major market benchmarks to record highs yet again and propelling the Dow Jones Industrials up more than 100 points. Economic data continued to support the notion that the U.S. economy remains strong, and rising inflation levels led many to conclude that the Federal Reserve is more likely than ever to follow through on its promise to keep lifting short-term interest rates in 2017. Rising bond yields reflected investors’ reluctance to hold onto fixed-income investments in anticipation of higher rates, prompting some to shift assets into the stock market. Several companies also reported, andFortress Investment Group (NYSE:FIG), Editas Medicine (NASDAQ:EDIT), and Hertz Global Holdings (NYSE:HTZ) were among the top performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) replaces Exxon Mobil this week as the worst-performing stock on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) index, a position it last held in February. The stock has lost 8.84% for the year to date.

The shares dropped by just 9 cents last week (less than 0.2%), but that was enough to drop the stock to the bottom of the Dow 30.

Investors remain concerned about the hit to revenues that may follow the adoption of the company’s unlimited data plan. With all four major U.S. wireless carriers now offering unlimited data plans, has the industry embarked on a race to the bottom?

Analysts at Jefferies warned:

While the industry remains bullish on growth in data usage, and metered plans allow for some continued enthusiasm, the move by every carrier to unlimited plans will cause carriers to hope for less and less data usage. Almost every pricing action over the last couple of years has continued to take the roof down on ARPU growth opportunities as more and more data was offered for the same, or lower price point. Now with the advent of unlimited plans, the upside from additional usage is gone for those choosing aggressively priced unlimited plans.

top ten stocks today: Summit Midstream Partners, LP(SMLP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

More often than not, when a company’s dividend starts approaching 10%, it’susually a sign that the market expects the payout to head lower in the very near future. However, for Summit Midstream Partners (NYSE:SMLP), that doesn’t appear to be the case. That’s because the pipeline and processing company can cover its payout with plenty of room to spare. In fact, it could actually resume distribution growth by year-end. While the company does have a large financial hurdle to overcome in the future, it has plenty of time to find a solution other than cutting the distribution.

Advisors’ Opinion:

During the early stages of a new innovation, interdependent architectures and integrated companies best optimize performance and functionality. This trend has played out in computing and handsets, and we see the same trend playing out in EVs. We find Tesla and BYD1 , by far, the most vertically integrated players in EVs, with huge scale advantages. In addition, LG Chem, Panasonic (PCRFY), Samsung SDI, BYD, and CATL are clear scale leaders in batteries (CATL is not publicly traded. All but Samsung SDI and BYD are not covered by Bernstein.).

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Clean Technica reported on September 1 that “Sony is entering the EV battery manufacturing industry”. And “considering that electric vehicle batteries are going to be the main supply bottleneck for the upcoming auto market’s embrace of EVs, the entry of Sony into the field is very notable. Most of the other manufacturers (Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY), LG Chem (OTC:LGCLF), etc.) already have more or less all of their production capacity locked up for the coming years – meaning there’s not much left for the auto manufacturers that are running behind, thereby limiting potential EV sales for the firms in question. Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) entry into the field should open things up a bit more”. Certainly a good move by Sony and helpful for the EV companies that will find themselves in need of batteries, and limited availability, should EVs reach 10% by 2020.

A Unilever vs. Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) showdown seems to be something out of an alternative, weird universe. But that’s exactly what has been happening in the Asia-Pacific region, where Unilever is now a major seller of air and water purification devices. The acquisitions of Qinyuan and Pureit water purifiers, as well as the acquisition of Sweden-based Blueair in 2016, reflects Unilever’s latest growth strategy of reducing exposure to low-growth brands in favor of greater investments in higher-growth products with strong social and environmental credentials.

When Weatherford International (WFT) announced that it had named Halliburton (HAL) CFO Mark McCollumits new CEO, its shares jumped as some observers contended itincreased the odds of an acquisition by the oil-services giant. It looks like they picked the wrong oil-services giant, however, as Weatherford and Schlumberger (SLB) announced a joint venture late Friday, one that has sent Weatherford’s shares soaring and earned it an upgrade from Wells Fargo analystsJudson Bailey andColeman Sullivan. They explain why:

    AP

We are upgrading WFT to Outperform from Market Perform as we like the hire of Mark McCollum as CEO and now the formation of the OneStim JV, which gives us greater confidence in improving operations and the de-levering of the balance sheet long-term. We view the JV announcement between WFT and SLB late Friday as a positive outcome for WFT as it provides an immediate cash infusion of $535 MM and a 30% stake in what will likely be a stronger #2 competitor to HAL in NAM pressure pumping/completion services. We value the OneStim JV today at approximately $4 Bn ($1.2 Bn to WFT) with the potential for value uplift to $6-7 Bn assuming SLB improves utilization for WFTs pressure pumping assets.

Shares of Weatherford International have risen 9% to $5.89, while Schlumberger has fallen more than 1% to $77 and Halliburton has fallen 1.3% to $49. TheVanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH) has declined 0.64%.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Natural Gas(NG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By William Romov]

Over the last year, the number of short positions on gold stocks has fallen. One of these stocks is a Canadian gold mining company called NovaGold Resources Inc. (NYSE: NG). In the last 12 months, the volume of short bets on the stock declined 79%, to 522,400. This shows a shift in sentiment from bearish to bullish for gold.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of Canadian gold mining stocks, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) (NYSEMKT:NG) and Yamana Gold Inc. (USA) (NYSE:AUY) are often the first names to come to mind. And well they should. Yamana Gold is a $2.5 billion giant, and NovaGold Resources seems to have been around forever.

Those two icons aren’t the only way to tap into Canada’s sizeable gold mining industry though. There’s a small, up-and-coming player called Taranis Resources Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNREF, TSX:TRO) that could end up becoming another key fixture of the country’s mining landscape.

Taranis develops mineral deposits into mine-ready projects. Its primary project right now — and it’s enough to keep the company plenty busy for the next several years — is the Thor property located near Trout Lake, British Columbia. NI 43-101 resource reports (indicated and inferred)suggest Thor contains 6.9 million ounces of silver, 35,000 ounces gold, 57 million pounds of lead, 79.4 million pounds of zinc and 3.3 Million pounds of copper (roughly a 14 million ounce silver equivalent (“AgEq”) deposit*) laying in wait in a way that lends itself to the establishment of a low-cost, open pit mining operation. That’s roughly $300 million worth of marketable metals, and the estimates have been steadily getting bigger as Tanaris does more survey work.

And 2017 could be a real breakout year for Taranis, as a lot of the work that’s been done to date starts to mean something. It’s got big exploration plans for this year… this spring/summer to be exact.

The Phase 1 program was completed in September of last year, setting the stage for a more defined and much bigger Phase 2 definition-drilling within the next several weeks. This Phase 2 definition drilling slated for the middle of this year will drill down to between 6000 m and 10,000 m.

These so-called first generation target areas are generally well understood areas based on sound geological information includ

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CVI) is currently correcting the bullish 5 waves cycle from November 2016 low as a triple three structure reaching equal legs area $20.48 – $19.56 . The move can extend lower toward the 50-61.8 percent Fibonacci area ( $18.98 – $17.34 ) as a double three but will remain supported as the stock is still looking for a move higher toward at least $31 to finish 3 waves correcting 2014 cycle. If the stock fails to make new highs after bouncing from the current inflection area , then the pullback can extend lower against $12.03 low which should hold to allow CVI to the resume higher later on

Goldman Sachs was the stick President-elect Donald Trump used to bludgeon political foes like Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail and win the White House. Now that he has been elected, Trump is leaning on former employees of the investment bank to play a major role in crafting his economic agenda.

On Monday, Trump announced Gary D. Cohn will be joining his cabinet as director of the National Economic Council and an assistant to the President for economic policy. Cohn’s appointment means there will be a trifecta of former Goldmanites in the Trump administration. Former Goldman partner and mortgage trader Steven Mnuchin has been named Secretary of Treasury by Trump. Steve Bannon, a former Goldman banker, is his chief strategist.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now

2017 was said to be the year of the buyout, and so far, it appears that the M&A prediction is coming true. Last year’s market saw several industries struggling and left some solid companies beaten down. That put them in a vulnerable position as some of their more stable competitors looked for ways to profit from the challenging environment.

Not only have market conditions made buyouts look much more enticing, but the Donald Trump administration’s promises to lower corporate taxes and reduce regulations have also given some companies more incentive to look for takeover targets.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As badly as short sellers want to hate on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), betting against the multiyear rally in this $12.7 billion beverage stock has been about as wise as eating from a box with a skull and crossbones on it. And as a bull market continues to lift all ships, Green Mountain’s ship is going to keep floating above the others.

Green Mountain owns Keurig, the brand of beverage brewers that use self-contained K-Cups to make coffee, teas, and other drinks. While Keurig’s “fad” status has certainly helped tip the deck against GMCR, the fact remains that the firm has done most of the hard work in getting Keurig machines accepted by consumers. With brewers essentially ubiquitous at this point, the firm is able to make money on its cash cow: the K-Cups.

Keurig’s individual-serving cups have big margins and a big installed base. With huge convenience and the relatively large sunk cost that consumers have put into their Keurig machines, it’s a sticky business with big switching costs. Consumers who buy a Keurig are much less likely to spend the money on a competing brand of proprietary coffee pods.

I’ve said before that GMCR is far from cheap right now. But its momentum trajectory is showing few signs of fizzling out, especially as direct competitors such as Starbucks (SBUX) continue to sell K-Cups of their own. Don’t bet against GMCR in September – buy this Rocket Stock instead.

  • [By David Sterman]

But for short sellers in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR), there's another outcome: They've been badly burned as shares have surged, but they insist they've been right all along, and it's only a matter of time before the stock crashes and burns.

  • [By Canadian Value]

So Im going to stick my next out and share my views on four battleground stocks that are among my favorite shorts: World Acceptance (WRLD), Green Mountain (GMCR), Herbalife (HLF), and InterOil (IOC). And next week at the Value Investing Congress I will present another short, my largest.

Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Buy Right Now: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.

Top 5 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018

A New Year perhaps calls for a new investment portfolio. How should you invest in 2017? Here are the nine best exchange-traded fund, ETF, picks from a panel of asset managers and investment strategists.

1. VanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH)

By Thomas F. Healy III

After years of fiscal gridlock and cautious Fed policy, government policy will have an outsized impact on the stock market. This is likely to include impacts from a regulatory, fiscal and monetary policy.

On the regulatory side, President-elect Trump has signaled the direction he will go with energy policy with his selection of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head up the Environmental Protection Agency.  Pruitt understands the proper relationship between protection and prosperity, suggesting the EPA will become much less restrictive on the U.S. fossil fuel industry. I would also expect the new administration to be more energy-friendly overall, allowing for swifter approval of pipeline projects and a more aggressive energy export policy.
