The aftermath of the torrential downpour in the Gulf Coast region of Texas from Hurricane Harvey, which brought massive, unprecedented flooding to Corpus Christi and Houston, will impact the area’s refineries, pipelines and storage, but the extent of the damage remains unknown.

The relentless downpour of Harvey, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, is expected to last through Friday, bringing as much as 50 inches of rain. Ahead of the hurricane, refiners shut down about 900,000 barrels of day of capacity, mostly in the Corpus Christi area. Before the Category 4 hurricane made landfall with 130 miles per hour wind, the four refineries owned by Valero Energy (VLO) and Citgo Petroleum and Flint Hill Resources shut down production on Thursday.

While the Corpus Christi refineries produce 4.4% of the capacity in the U.S., the refineries in Houston, the fourth largest American city, and Texas City together generate 12% of refining capacity, producing a mixture of products ranging from gasoline to jet fuel. The outages at refineries continued to increase on Sunday as there is 2.2 million barrels a day of capacity which is down or being brought down, according to a S&P Global Platts report. Operators which are onshore in the Eagle Ford Shale in south Texas have also shut down hundreds of wells, the report added while offshore production from platforms and rigs was increasing on Sunday.

top 10 stocks to buy: Flowers Foods, Inc.(FLO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Consumers across the nation know Flowers Foods (NYSE:FLO) from its Wonder bread, Tastykake snack cakes, and Nature’s Own bakery brands. Yet the truly novel thing about Flowers is how it has done such a good job of building up a national presence in an industry that is typically dominated by local competition. Coming into Monday’s fourth-quarter financial report, Flowers investors were hoping to see at least some growth in sales and earnings, but the bakery company wasn’t able to deliver the pace of expansion that most shareholders really want to see.

More details emerged about the proposed initial public offering (IPO) of shares in the world’s largest company, the state oil giant Saudi Aramco, following comments Saudi oil ministry advisor Ibrahim Muhanna made to the Wall Street Journal. The company will likely float around 5% of its shares, Muhanna said, and the listing may come within the next year.

Company History

Saudi Aramco, officially the Saudi Arabian Oil Company, began as a Saudi-American joint enterprise in the 1930s. The Saudi government began building up a stake in the 1973, following the Yom Kippur War, and took full control in 1980. The company is the largest in the world by a significant margin, though the exact size is unknown. Reporting Muhanna’s comments, the WSJ cited a “conservative number” of $2.5 trillion, but the paper has put forward a high estimate of $10 trillion in the past. Best Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

April 28, 2017: Markets opened mixed on Friday following a weak report on first-quarter GDP growth (up 0.7%). Even the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite couldn’t hold on to an early gain and trailed southward all day. Tech and energy were Friday’s best sectors while telecom and financials led the losers. WTI crude oil for June delivery settled at $49.33 a barrel, up 0.7% on the day but posted a monthly loss of 2.5%. June gold added 0.2% for the day to settle at $1,268.30, finishing the week down 1.6% and the month up about 1.3%. Equities were headed for a lower close shortly before the bell as the DJIA traded down 0.22% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.22%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 0.02%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Friday was Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) which traded down 3.78% at $36.01. The stock’s 52-week range is $29.50 to $38.45. Volume was about 90% above the daily average of around 23.6 million shares. The chipmaker announced first-quarter results last night that were good, but not good enough.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The large cap E&Ps we cover raised ~ $6.5 billion of equity in 2015 and are likely to consider additional issuance in 2016. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) raised $1.3 billion on January 5th and Hess Corp. (HES) raised $1.5 billion of equity/equity-linked earlier this month. We think highly leveraged companies such as Devon Energy,Encana andRange Resources (RRC) and companies with a large deficit (before asset sales), such asAnadarko Petroleum and Devon Energy, are most likely to consider raising equity. Additionally, we believe companies such as WPX Energy (WPX), Southwestern Energy (SWN), Marathon Oil, Continental Resources (CLR),Noble Energy and Newfield Exploration (NFX) could issue equity while several levered companies may be unwilling or unable to access equity markets. We do not think Apache, Canadian Natural Resource, EOG Resources (EOG), Occidental Petroleum orPioneer Natural Resources are likely to issue equity this year.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was an up-and-down day for the stock market, which lost substantial ground early in the day only to climb back toward the unchanged mark by the end of the session. A slight rise for the Dow Jones Industrials led to yet another record-high close, and although other major market benchmarks weren’t quite as lofty, they nevertheless finished with only modest losses on the day. Generally favorable news and sentiment helped the market bounce back during the day, but some stocks still finished lower. Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX), Global Blood Therapeutics (NASDAQ:GBT), and Nautilus (NYSE:NLS) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Large Caps. Our E&P coverage is pricing in $61/bbl WTI and $3.30 gas, and with a lower crude forecast the group is looking less compelling. We argue names that continue to demonstrate resource improvement at the low-end of the cost curve, namely in the Permian and STACK remain attractive, such as Concho Resources (CXO), Devon Energy (DVN), Newfield Exploration (NFX) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). Noble (NBL) remains a compelling value, though has yet to commit to an accelerated US onshore drilling program.

A lot of people develop deep feelings when it comes to the stock market. They get emotionally hooked on stocks, "stories" about companies and even the market’s future.

Most times, this relationship ends badly. Although the market represents the "animal spirits" of millions of investors, it doesn’t single out your feelings. It has no regard for what you think or do.

That’s why it’s always time to be cautious because you need to look at risk. Bull markets don’t last forever and you need to be vigilant. Here are five things the market doesn’t care about:

Shutterstock

— Whether you think it’s high or low. By historical standards, what investors are willing to pay for shares is high. The Shiller P/E Ratio, a benchmark for market valuation, is hovering around 38. It was around 44 during the height of the dot.com bubble and 27 in 2007 (before the credit bubble crash).

CSX (CSX) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after railroad operator was upgraded by BMO Capital Markets following its big activist-inspired move last week.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    CSXgained 3.7% to $45.99 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.3% to 2,265.20.

BMO’sFadiChamoun andTarunJoshi explain why they upgraded CSX to Outperform from Market Perform:

We are upgrading CSX shares to Outperform from Market Perform and raising our target price to $55 from $38. We see upside to around $80 over the medium term. Our constructive thesis is predicated on Mantle Ridge LP being successful in its effort to install Hunter Harrison as CEO of CSX. We believe that the probability of this occurring is fairly high without going down the road of a bruising proxy battle.

CSX’s market capitalization rose to $43.1 billion today from $41.4 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $2 billion on sales of $11.1 billion in 2016.

  • [By Craig Jones]

Dan Nathan suggested on CNBC's Options Action a bearish trading idea in CSX Corporation (NASDAQ: CSX). He explained that the stock jumped 80 percent from its 52-week low in February and it gained around 20 percent since the election. It has significantly outperformed the Dow Jones Transportation index in that period and Nathan thinks that it is reasonable to expect a pull back.

They’re baaa-aack.  Wall Street: “Please God, no.”  Two ex-presidents both declare their intention of getting back in the game in October 2018. Only one, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has a chance of winning the presidency once again. Lula is under investigation for orchestrating the largest corporate corruption scandal in Brazil’s history. Even if he had nothing to do with it, the ransacking of Petrobras happened for over a decade, and most of it on his watch.  (AP Photo/Eraldo Peres, File)

Brazil’s economy is growing again. It’s not by much. But after nearly three years of recession and unemployment going from 4.5% to 12%, anything over zero is reason to celebrate. Brazil’s stock market as measured by the popular iShares MSCI Brazil fund (EWZ) is up 20% this year. No country can do it better for Wall Street.

For refiners, though, that spread in price led to very lucrative refining margins. As that spread has narrowed, so too has margins for refiners.

    Refining Margins Q4 2012 Q2 2013
    Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) $12.27 $9.26

Shares of Advance Auto Parts gained 15% to $164.33, while the S&P 500 rose 0.8% to 2,180.39.

Credit Suisse analyst Seth Sigman and team explain why shares of Advance Auto Parts are soaring:

Advance Auto Parts’ Q3 and strategic update was one of the better scenarios for this stock with better than expected comps, positive commentary on Q4, a roughly in line 2017 outlook, and a new sense of direction on how this new management team will narrow the margin gap with peers. Management guided to a 500 bps long-term margin improvement, which wasnt a surprise to investors, and other specifics were still limited. However, timed with Q3/4′s improvement, this should help instill some early confidence in this team. We are adjusting our 2016 and 2017 EPS modestly, to $7.30 (from $7.23) and to $7.65 (from $7.60) respectively.

Advance Auto Parts market capitalization rose to $12.1 billion today from $10.7 billion yesterday.

The key issue to focus on is automotive group comparable sales, which can be seen in the chart below. I’ve also included the most directly applicable sales numbers for its peers,O’Reilly Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:ORLY), AutoZone, Inc (NYSE:AZO) and Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE:AAP). The disappointing sales performance of Advance Auto Parts is largely due to the effects of integrating a troublesome acquisition.

So here’s a disruptive move. Consider buying auto parts retailer Advance Auto Parts (AAP) , the weakest of the big three in the sector, which has 5,000-plus locations in the U.S. The other two players are O’Reilly Automotive, Inc. (ORLY) , the fastest-growing of the three, and AutoZone, Inc. (AZO) .
