Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Halliburton Company(HAL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

But what really differentiates SLB from rivals such as Halliburton Company (HAL) is its client list.

Instead of focusing on North America, Schlumberger has a global portfolio, and thus its revenues are well, worldlier. Thats important, because state-owned energy firms can have a different mandate than publicly traded energy stocks. They often drill despite losses. Plus, the multitude of operating regions means some could be profitable, covering for when others are not.

Instead, Genargo prefers oil services stocks with the most exposure to the U.S market. Loop names Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) as its top large-cap stock pick and Oil States International, Inc. (NYSE: OIS), Newpark Resources Inc (NYSE: NR) and Superior Energy Services, Inc. (NYSE: SPN) as its top small- and mid-cap stocks.

Halliburton (HAL) has gotten beaten up this year…and even today’s earnings beat doesn’t capable of reversing its fortunes.

    Getty Images

Halliburton reported a profit of 4 cents, beating forecasts for 3 cents, on sales of $4.28 billion, narrowly edging expectations for $4.27 billion. Halliburton’s shares were trading higher before the market opened, but have declined have declined 0.3% to $46.90 at 1:56 p.m. today.

Evercore ISI’s James West sees a “margin explosion” coming for Halliburton during the second half of the year, while comparing the oil-services giant to LeBron:

With the start of the year already regarded as a transition period, we view the companys decision to sacrifice near term margins in order to accelerate long-term profitability and revenue growth as a defensive, yet calculated, and preemptive maneuver. Execution does remain a risk but naysayers seem to utter similar indecencies about LeBron James each year as the playoffs arrive. You dont doubt the king, and HAL is the clear market leader when it comes to NAM completions, in our view. The change in HALs reporting format makes syncing HALs commentary with its financials more difficult, but NAM comprised 68% and 61% of C&P revenues in 2014 and 2015, respectively (71% and 21% of EBIT). As such, the broader segment should be a good proxy for the region. Abatement of cost inflation, or at least a deceleration as we progress beyond the first step-change in activity of the cycle should serve as an additional tailwind for margins. The most likely benefit will come from proppant costs as sand mines resume processing finer mesh grades following the winter hiatus. Additional frac capacity is being reactivated at leading edge prices, evidenced by the fact that incremental margins improved throughout the first quarter, and the company continues to repair legacy contracts and commitments. The improvement of the broader po

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Phillips 66 Partners LP(PSXP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While the company continues to invest in midstream projects on its balance sheet, however, Garland reiterated that its MLP,Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP), remains an important part of our midstream growth strategy.” Garland reaffirmed the expectation that Phillips 66 Partners will “reach its growth goal of $1.1 billion in run-rate EBITDA by the end of 2018.” That will require completing additional dropdown transactions between the two companies as well as the pursuit of new organic growth projects at the MLP.

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

As PSX has grown as a refining outfit, it has added midstream assets pipelines, terminals, rail lines and storage farms. Owning pipelines and gathering systems is a great way to generate cash flows. Phillips enhanced that by placing them inside of its master limited partnership, Phillip 66 Partners LP (PSXP). That way, PSX is preparing to keep its profits even when oil does inevitably rise.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The other highlight this quarter was the midstream business. That segment benefited from a full quarter of Phillips 66’s recently completed Freeport LPG Export Terminal as well as a turnaround in results at DCP Midstream (NYSE:DCP). After causing the company to record a loss on its investment last quarter, the DCP Midstream investment was back in the green this quarter, benefiting from hedging and lower costs. Meanwhile, the company’s other MLP investment, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE:PSXP), delivered another steady quarter thanks to that entity’s focus on owning stable fee-based assets.

In 2016, PAA partnered with Phillips 66 Partners LP (NYSE: PSXP) to build a $15 million pipeline expansion between Oklahoma and Canada. The new pipeline adds capacity for 100,000 more barrels of oil a day.

Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP) was raised to Buy from Neutral with a $60 price target at Goldman Sachs on December 18. The units were last seen trading at $51.23, and the 5% yield would represent a total return of over 22% if the firm is correct. The 52-week range is $44.40 to $58.00, and the consensus price target is $59.43.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Devon Energy Corporation(DVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The failure of Russia and others to fulfill their obligations are coming at a time when U.S. shale production is starting to ramp back up. Shale producers such as Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD) and Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) have already released growth-focused budgets to capture the benefits of an improving oil market. In Pioneer Natural Resources’ case, it expects to spend $2.8 billion this year to operate 18 drilling rigs in the Permian Basin and restart its drilling program in the Eagle Ford. Those rigs should enable the company to drill enough wells to grow its production by 15% to 18% over last year’s average. Meanwhile, Devon Energy expects to spend between $2 billion to $2.3 billion on drilling this year, which should fuel 13% to 17% oil production growth by the fourth quarter versus last year’s final quarter.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

U.S. producers hit their peak more than a year ago with production steadily coming down since then due to under-investment. However, the industry has recently started ramping activity back up in an attempt to push back against the natural production decline. For example, leading U.S. driller Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) reduced its rig count from 40 in early 2015 to five by the third quarter of 2016. As a result, Devon Energy’s third-quarter production from retained assets declined 6.9% year over year. However, Devon Energy has started adding back rigs now that oil prices have stabilized above $50 per barrel and it expected to end 2016 running 10 rigs, with plans to run 15 to 20 by the end of this year. These rigs should push its production up by a low- to mid-single-digitrate this year.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While crude prices stumbled into 2016, they found their footing by mid-year and roared back to life, ending the year up about 42%. Those rising prices lifted most oil stocks. However, a handful of large-cap oil stocks rose above the crowd by outperforming crude’s rally. Those top-tier performers wereContinental Resources (NYSE:CLR), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD), and Cimarex Energy (NYSE:XEC):

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Beta Should Lead At The Start of A Rally: Best ideas in the first leg up: Marathon Oil, Devon Energy (DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (APC), and Continental Resources (CLR). If OPEC announces a cut, whether moderate or deep, we expect that in the initial move up, moderate value beta names, like Marathon Oil, Devon Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, andContinental Resources will lead. For a $5 increase in oil prices, we estimate 2017 cash flow per share would increase 12-18% for these stocks vs. the remainder of the group at 12%. Of these four, short interest is modest for all exceptContinental Resources at 25%, among the highest in our universe. Outperformance of these names should be driven by investors adding to long positions, not short covering.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

It wasn’t just Marathon that got clipped as the eight worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500 came from the energy sector, including Murphy Oil (MUR), which fell 6.7% to $25.87, Devon Energy (DVN), which slid 6.5% to $40.72, and Chesapeake Energy (CHK), which stumbled 6.1% to $4.94. No surprise, then, that the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) slumped 2.6% to $69.65.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Chesapeake Energy Corporation(CHK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

When it comes to energy stocks to watch, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK) has to be on the top of the list.

This past quarter, CHK continued on its transition plans to reduce its heavy debt load, remake its portfolio of assets and live to see another day. And it seemed at first, CHK was doing just that. The natural gas fracker, however, was hit by some pretty bad news at the end of the quarter.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) posted a new 52-week low of $3.55 on Tuesday, down about 2.7% from Monday’s closing price of $3.65. The stock’s 52-week high is $8.20. Volume totaled around 23 million shares, about 30% below the daily average. The company had no specific news.

  • [By Wayne Duggan]

Trump is particularly enthusiastic about shale oil & gas and clean coal, which is good news for stocks such as Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK), Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) and CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE: CNX).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Natural gas had been under pressure all year, especially after this past February was the warmest since 1954. By mid-March, gas had lost a quarter of its value because of an oversupplied market. However, it awoke from that slumber toward the end of March thanks in part to the triumphant return of winter, which pounded parts of the nation with a major late-season snowstorm. That storm drove up demand for gas, sending the stocks of several gas producers soaring late last month, including Rice Energy and larger rivalsChesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) and Southwestern Energy (NYSE:SWN), which both rose more than 5%.

  • [By Johanna Bennett]

Yet again, Chesapeake Energy (CHK) has tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500, delivering the biggest declines of the day despite a rise in natural gas prices.

Chesapeake Energy dropped 4.2%, or 26 cents to $5.89, while the S&P 500 declined 0.68% to 2,328.95. Front Month Nymex natural gas for May delivery rose 1.35% to $3.230 per million British thermal units.

Last month, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Karl Chalabala kicked off coverage of the natural-gas and oil-exploration company with a buy rating, saying the stock would give investors exposure to a bullish demand cycle. At $10, his price target suggested, at that time, that the stock could double over the next 12 months.

Chesapeake has fallen more than 16% since the start of 2017

I can safely say that, from my 35 years in the financial markets, to be consistently successful at investing, one must put prudence over popularity.

Human nature as it is, investors often find it difficult to take unpopular actions. My motivation in writing this column is to nudge you to take five unpopular, but prudent, actions today.

But before I do that, lets look at two charts and understand the concept of over-owned.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: FMC Technologies, Inc.(FTI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: AMTEK, Inc.(AME)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.
