Despite many of its services being blocked in China, Google has chosen Beijing as the location for its first artificial research center in Asia.

“The science of AI has no borders, neither do its benefits,” Fei-Fei Li, chief scientist at Google’s AI business, said in a blog post Wednesday announcing the new center.

But China’s internet borders are fortified by the so-called Great Firewall, and most of Google’s biggest products — its search engine, YouTube and Gmail — have been blocked by the country’s vast censorship apparatus for years.

Google effectively left China in 2010. But the country’s 730 million internet users make it too large a market to ignore — and Google has made no secret of its desire to find ways to rebuild its presence in the country.

Google’s artificial intelligence unit DeepMind even teamed up with Chinese authorities to hold a five-day festival in the country earlier this year. The event focused on a human-versus-computer showdown in the ancient game of Go.

Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE: SCHW) had a famous investor selling stock this past week. Chairman Charles Schwab continues to sell stock at an orderly pace. This week the iconic discount brokerage executive sold 600,000 shares at prices between $32.50 and $33.75. The total for the trade came to a whopping $20 million. As we have noted in the past, Schwab is past 80 years old and clearly much of his selling over the years has been for estate planning purposes. The shares traded Friday at $35.25, so a fair amount left on the table.

President-elect Donald Trump’s economic plan is expected to give a boost to business, which has been pressured by what some consider a tight regulatory environment andhighcorporate taxes. That potential for a rollback in regulation and a corporate tax rate of 15% are reasons the stock market has reacted so positively to Trump’s plans. But what about entrepreneurs and emerging businesses? Will this area still be the growth story it’s been? And where will the jobs andgrowth come from in the coming years?

As oil nears $50, some investors fret that a new round of production could begin, undermining the nascent recovery. Not so, say Guggenheim’s Subash Chandra and Marshall Coltrain, who expect good things from WPX Energy (WPX), Devon Energy (DVN) and Continental Resources (CLR). They explain why:

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

As oil approaches $50, we believe oil supply and drilling activity will be slow to respond. The de-levering theme is still predominant, in our view…The first phase was to reduce or eliminate bank debt through equity raises and asset sales. That has largely concluded. The new phase could distract more capital and last longer. Most companies we spoke to are intent on reducing rather than refinancing long-term debt obligations. The recent cycle set back growth strategies depending on leverage and high commodity prices. The new goal may be to put the capital structure ahead of growth to create more viable, robust institutions. Near-term debt maturities are in the crosshairs and 2019 or 2020 arent far off…

While crude prices stumbled into 2016, they found their footing by mid-year and roared back to life, ending the year up about 42%. Those rising prices lifted most oil stocks. However, a handful of large-cap oil stocks rose above the crowd by outperforming crude’s rally. Those top-tier performers wereContinental Resources (NYSE:CLR), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD), and Cimarex Energy (NYSE:XEC):

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Beta Should Lead At The Start of A Rally: Best ideas in the first leg up: Marathon Oil, Devon Energy (DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (APC), and Continental Resources (CLR). If OPEC announces a cut, whether moderate or deep, we expect that in the initial move up, moderate value beta names, like Marathon Oil, Devon Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, andContinental Resources will lead. For a $5 increase in oil prices, we estimate 2017 cash flow per share would increase 12-18% for these stocks vs. the remainder of the group at 12%. Of these four, short interest is modest for all exceptContinental Resources at 25%, among the highest in our universe. Outperformance of these names should be driven by investors adding to long positions, not short covering.

Oil prices haven’t gotten off to the fast start many expected, falling around 6% on average during the first quarter of the year. That slump came despite OPEC’s best efforts since producing nations have achieved fairly good compliance on their planned output cuts. That said, despite the lackluster oil market, we still see some interestingopportunities in the oil market. Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

Core Laboratories (NYSE:CLB) literally has its ear to the ground when it comes to deciphering what’s going on in the oil market. The company studies oil reservoirs, which tell it what’s happening with production, giving it a deep level of understanding on the supply side of the market. Core Labs takes what the reservoirs are saying, compares this with other data, and then blends it into an informed macro view of the oil market, which CEO David Demshur shared on the company’s recent quarterly earnings conference call. Here are five things he says the reservoirs are telling us about what’s really going on in the oil market.

Hot Energy Stocks To Invest In 2018: Statoil ASA(STO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Norway’s Statoil ASA (NYSE: STO) announced this morning that it has acquired stakes in two North Sea projects from France’s Total S.A. (NYSE: TOT). The transaction, valued at $1.45 billion, includes a 51% equity stake in the Martin Linge field and a 40% stake in the Garantiana discovery, both located on Norway’s continental shelf.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We believe that the equity market has neutralised much of its underweight energy positioning in 4Q/1Q, but was caught by the sharp rally in crude from end-January. Our base-case sees oil prices still higher by end-2016 (we see >$50/bbl), albeit with a choppy 2Q likely ahead. In this scenario a modest, rather than fully-fledged price-recovery we continue to place a lot of importance on self-help in driving ROE expansion (as opposed to relying simply on oil-leverage). Value-adjusted, we like the self-help stories around Total, Chevron, Statoil (STO), Royal Dutch Shell and Eni (E) in the group. Total is on the Citi European Focus list.

Should oil prices recover, we believe that deepwater drilling activity growth should lag growth in US shale activity, as project economics is generally better in US shales, and E&Ps involved in US shales are generally quicker to react. Deepwater activity is largely comprises a handful of companies (Petrobras (PBR), Statoil (STO), Total (TOT), Shell (RDS.A), BP (BP), ONGC, ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX)) and it is unlikely that these companies can meaningfully increase their rig demand in a short period of time to absorb the current oversupply. Thus, should oil prices rise in 2018, rig demand may increase, but likely not enough to tighten the market, given that supply equaling 43% of current working rig count is stacked and new supply equaling 25% of working rig count is under-construction and should be entering the market in the coming years. As a result, while we expect some improvement in rig utilization owing to rig retirements, it will unlikely be strong enough to meaningfully improve rates in 2018 above spot levels. Any demand increase in the interim could slow rig retirements materially, and be self-defeating. We thus are Sell rated on Transocean, Atwood and Noble.

The Q4 2016 earnings report forsmall cap fitnessdevice stockFitbit Inc (NYSE: FIT) is scheduled for after the market closes onWednesday (February 22nd). Competition in the fitness device and wearables market has made Fitbit Inc theseventh most shorted stock on the NYSE with elevated short interest of 38.92% according to Highshortinterest.com. At the end of January, Fitbit Incs CEOwarned that:

Fourth quarter results are expected to be below our prior guidance range; however, we are confident this performance is not reflective of the value of our brand, market-leading platform, and companys long-term potential. While we have experienced softer-than-expected holiday demand for trackers in our most mature markets, especially during Black Friday, we have continued to grow rapidly in select markets like EMEA, where revenue grew 58% during the fourth quarter. To address this reduction in growth and what we believe is a temporary slowdown and transition period, we are taking clear steps to reduce operating costs. Looking forward, we believe Fitbit is in a unique position to stimulate new areas of demand by leveraging the data we collect to deliver a more personalized experience while developing upgraded versions of existing products and launching additional products to expand into new categories. As the overall wearable category leader, we exited the year with an engaged community of over 23.2 million active users, making us uniquely positioned to be the partner of choice for the healthcare ecosystem, which is a key component of our long-term strategy.

BP plc (ADR) (NYSE: BP), Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE: RDS-A) (NYSE: RDS-B) and Statoil ASA(ADR) (NYSE: STO) are expected to outperform their peers by offering: 1) the greatest rate of change in cost reduction through technology and innovation, 2) upstream portfolios with an attractive risk to reward profile and 3) sufficient liquidity to invest in future growth.

NORW reflects Norway's oil exposure. The ETF allocates nearly 28.8 percent of its weight to the energy, 870 basis points more than it devotes to its second-largest sector exposure, financial services. State-run Statoil ASA(ADR) (NYSE: STO) is NORW's largest individual holding at a weight of 15.3 percent, or 560 basis points more than NORW allocates to its second-largest holding.

“As a technician, I see largely rangebound motion with big bounces being retraced and fades being bought at deep support,” she added. “As the markets opened, holding over $48.12 will likely spell a bullish run as several refineries are closed in the region, such as Phillips66 (PSX) , Shell Petrobras and Exxon (XOM) . The support tests that hold $47.3 will be buy zones more than likely. Overall, the current remains the same – a largely landlocked region with only temporary moves up or down until the rebalancing looks better.”

Top 10 Energy Stocks For 2018: Baker Hughes Incorporated(BHI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

GE recently doubled down on its oil and gas business after merging it with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI) and took a majority 62.5% stake in the merged entity. The merged entity is now the second-largest oil services business and will help GE take full advantage of increased oil and gas production under the new administration.

  • [By William Patalon III]

Since the moment it was announced, we’ve been highly bullish on the complicated-but-intriguing deal that would combine the oilfield services unit of General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) and all of sector rival Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI).
