Michael A. Robinson

I’m not average.

For one, I’m a bit taller than the average guy. My hair went silver earlier than I expected. And I’m fortunate that it’s easier for me to keep trim than a lot of people I know.

On the downside, I’ve got various allergies and genetic maladies that most folks don’t.

My environment isn’t average either. Here in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, I spend my days in some of the most polluted cities in the United States. Of course, in other ways, this region rates much higher than most of America.

Then there are my habits. For example, I eat well, but don’t get to the gym enough.

I bet you’re the same way – but different.

No one is average.

And that’s why it often seems like maintaining a healthy diet, getting plenty of exercise, and regular checkups just aren’t enough to keep us healthy. If it were, no one would gain too much weight, go bald at 30, or get cancer.

good investment stocks: URS Corporation(URS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ian Wyatt, Publisher & Chief Investment Strategist, Wyatt Investment Research]

Fund manager John Mirshekari, of the Fidelity Low-Priced Stock Fund, recommended shares of URS (URS), an engineering and construction contractor.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Fidelty’s John Mirshekaritook a look at URS(URS) today at the Value Investing Congress. His takeaway: The stock could double in two years.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

His analysis started with URS’s use of its free cash. During the past, it hasn’t been pretty. They spent 6.3 billion on eight acquisitions, they’ve bought companies at valuations higher than own stock and return-on-equity has dropped from high teens to just 6%.

The problem hasn’t been its business: Its return on tangible capital is 17%. Instead, the problem is that its management hasn’t maximized value through capital allocation. URS has lowest valuation: 9x 2013 cash earnings in its industry.

Part of the problem: Management incentives are based on net income. This year, however, relative total shareholder return was added., something Mirshekari calls”a step in the right direction.” In May, URS filed an amended proxy which says it will look to change incentives from net income to return on equity and earnings per share. More importantly, it said acquisitions would end.

If all goes right, URS could double in two years,Mirshekari says, comparing it to AECOM Technology (ACM).

Looks a lot like AECOMM, which did something similar and rallied.

good investment stocks: American International Group Inc.(AIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Heading into its earnings following the close of trading yesterday, shares of American International Group (AIG) had gained 34% from its low on Jun. 28 to Feb. 14. Then the bottom fell out.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was yet another record-setting day for the stock market, as the Dow climbed triple digits and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite followed the venerable average to unprecedented heights. Economic data showing rising inflation made it more likely that the Federal Reserve will look to boost interest rates at its next Federal Open Market Committee meeting next month, and the ripples throughout the bond market sent many investors to consider stocks instead. Yet despite the substantial rally, some stocks missed out on the move higher, and American International Group (NYSE:AIG), Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK), and Movado Group (NYSE:MOV) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

BMO’s Charles Sebaski explains why he upgraded American International Group (AIG) to Outperform from market Perform:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

AIG has been trading at discount to its tangible book given its mid-single digit return profile; however, we expect AIGs valuation to keep increasing with its improving return profile. We are now forecasting AIG to generate a 9.9% operating return on tangible common equity (ROtE) in 2018, which would be a 450 bp improvement from 2016. A double-digit return profile warrants the 1x multiple that we are applying to its tangible book value per share. While we expect AIGs return profile to benefit from lower taxes, we also expect the companys life and retirement business to improve from the rising interest rates as those spread businesses are more interest rate sensitive than the P&C business. That said, we expect continued improvement on both the loss and expense sides of the P&C as contributing factors to the ROtE improve.

BMO also upgraded Arch Capital Group (ACGL), Brown & Brown (BRO), and Travelers (TRV).

Shares of American International Group have declined 0.4% to $65.60 at 3:36 p.m. today, whileArch Capital Group has gained 2% to $87.90,Brown & Brown has advanced 0.5% to $44.65, andTravelers has risen 1.3% to $120.79.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

American International Group (AIG) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after its earnings fell well short of the Street consensus.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    AIG dropped 8.9% to $60.85 today, while the S&P 500 gained 0.5% to 2,349.25.

Yes, AIG’s earnings were bad. It reported an operating loss of $2.72 a share, missing forecasts for a profit of 42 cents, according to Bloomberg. And it didn’t help that John Paulson’s Paulson & Co. cut its stake in the insurer.

You’ll notice the forecast is different than what it was in my earlier post on AIG–and an AIG spokesperson even reached out to tell me that the consensus, at least according to FactSet, should had been for a loss of 61 cents a share. Why the confusion? RBC’s Mark Dwelle and Scott Heleniak have your answer:

In reporting results AIG has recast all of its business segments, transferring various pieces to a Legacy unit, reallocating corporate expenses and net investment income as well as making some changes as to what is included within operating income, the most notable of which is that loss reserve discount effects in U.S. Commercial Insurance (and the Legacy unit) are now excluded from Operating Income. Accordingly, comparisons to prior reported results, and to some extent our 4Q16 estimates, require some reconciliation.

Macquarie’sAmit Kumar considers the bull and bear cases on AIG:

On 2/14, after market close, AIG reported a Q4 operating loss of $2.72 per share vs. our estimate of a $0.52 loss and street consensus of a $0.54 loss. Results are not directly comparable to street consensus due to lack of unanimity in terms of reserve adjustment estimates. Results included a higher than estimated $5.6 billion or $3.56/share of adverse development. The company had previously announced the possibility of a material reserve charge in the quarter. The bulls on the stock would note that this quar

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the cost associated with medication errors is estimated at $42 billion annually or almost 1% of total global health expenditure.

In keeping with the WHO’s recent global effort to halve medication-related errors in five years and Medication Safety Week this week, some companies and organizations are doing their part to educate the public and broaden the conversation with seniors and health care professionals on medication safety in the hospital and through hospital discharge.

Admission and discharge from the hospital are arguably the most dangerous points in time for seniors with regard to their medication, as they’ve often been prescribed new treatments and prescriptions. Consequently, hospitals are now realizing a need to perform what is referred to as “medication reconciliation” at the point of admission or discharge to look at the full list of medications a patient is on and confirm there are no potential interactions or unnecessary medications.

D.R. Barton, Jr.

Editor’s Note: Sitting on the sidelines during record highs only means you’re missing opportunities. Playing markets proactively with D.R.’s loss-limiting strategy – just as relevant today as when he first introduced it in 2015 – can help insure your portfolio against any sudden drops. Here’s D.R…

One phenomenon I find holds true in trading and investing is that some things that diehards think should not go together just work.

It’s a lesson I learned early. It came from my love of eating, which led to my love of cooking. Specifically, it was a batch of hot, gooey brownies followed by a swig of beer – and, believe it or not, howdeliciousthat odd combination turned out to be – that taught me to explore what the unexpected could do…

In this case, the unexpected combination that makes this strategy work so well pairs value investing with technical trading. This open-minded approach made my investing immensely more profitable because it turned me on to a “trick” that got me 70% fewer losing trades…

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is a global phenomenon. Even with 1.86 billion monthly active users as of the end of 2016, the company is still growing its user base at a fairly steady clip in the high teens.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Investors have questioned the relevance of the company’s Snapchat app in a market dominated by messaging services such as Facebook’s (FB) WhatsApp and the business-focused Slack Technologies. Wall Street has also raised questions about its ability to monetize the billions of messages it handles each day.

  • [By Vikram Nagarkar] We all know about Instagram now, but Facebook Inc. stock (NASDAQ:FB) could have 3 new catalysts.

Menlo Park, California-based Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)has had a good run so far in 2017, rising by over 22% Year To Date (YTD). However, the rally might not be over. While analysts are still increasingly bullish on Facebook’s prospects based on its current set of catalysts, the company is putting in place growth drivers that could keep growth at elevated levels over the coming years. Even as concerns over peaking ad-loads on the core Facebook platform seemed to be coming to the fore, Facebook has managed to leverage its photo sharing app, Instagram, to drive top line numbers. And while Instagram still has huge potential, Facebook is exploring what it can do with its other online properties, like Messenger and WhatsApp, both of which could propel Facebook’s next phase of growth.

Top 10 Tech Stocks To Buy For 2018: Avago Technologies Limited(AVGO)

In Jack Hough’s follow-up article, “Broadcom Stock’s Big Run Isn’t Over,” see how this chip maker is gaining share in Apple’s new iPhone and cashing in on Arista Networks’ success. Friday’s sell-off after Broadcom Ltd (NASDAQ: AVGO) posted earnings that failed to impress investors is no reason for shareholders to give up, says Barron’s, but there are two reasons it is worth noting.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

The recent takeover bid by Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has simply changed smartphone chip giant QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) shares’ fortunes after struggling for the majority of the year since the January sell-off. ThoughQualcomm board has rejected the $70 per share acquisition offer, this news has lead to a strong rally in QCOM stock since October end gaining more than 30%. Now,there has been some positive news coming in over the weekend which could further boost thespirit of Qualcomm investors. Is there more upside left in QCOM stock in the near-term? Let’s take a closer look.

Broadcom Ltd. (NASDAQ: AVGO) short interest fell to 3.97 million shares in the period, from the previous of 4.43 million. Shares closed most recently at $176.75, in a 52-week range of $114.25 to $179.42.

Broadcom Ltd. (NASDAQ: AVGO) also had a huge seller on the trading desk last week. Silver Lake Partners sold a total of 385,797 shares of the supplier of semiconductor connectivity solutionsat a share price of $180.36. The total for the sale was a whopping $69,582,178. The consensus price target for the red-hot technology company is set at $211.68. The shares were trading at $181.94 as the week came to a close.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

Smartphone chip giant QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) stock is having its best run this year since the sell-off due to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other lawsuits at the beginning of the year. Qualcomm stock is almost 30% up in November. The take overbid by another semiconductor company Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has been the main driving force behind the reversal of fortunes for QCOM stock rather than a change in the fundamental story of the San Diego, California based company. Qualcomm board has rejected the $70 per share acquisition offer saying the bid is too low setting up for a proxy fight. The higher than usual volumes have been also vital for the stock’sustained uptrend. However, the upward surge in QCOM stock is beginning to cool off with the share price being almost flat over the past few days. The question now is, Can Qualcomm stock still climb higher from here? The answer to this could be partly found in the QCOM stock technical chart.

Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they’re in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn’t much different than the real thing.
Banking and managing money isn’t what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking.
That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. (MITK), a San Diego-based technology company, debuted its Mobile Photo Account Opening product at Finovate, a trade show where banking tech products are often unveiled. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. If you have your bank’s app, you can use your smartphone’s camera to take a photo of the front and back of your driver’s license, and presto, your new checking, savings or credit card account is open.

There are lots of stories like that out there these days. People were perplexed about the Illinois Tool Works (ITW) and Cummins Engine (CMI) and Caterpillar (CAT) quarters, but they turned out to be classic buying opportunities after years of being sell opportunities if the stocks had run. I can’t explain to you how amazing that is. Here are three stocks that have spent months and months in purgatory when they have missed or guided down or slashed forecasts. Now they are up gigantically.

Many holders of The Trade Desk (TTD) are disappointed by the recent drop after Q3 earnings. The stock sold off on what was a strong earnings report and what was seen as “soft” guidance. This is likely because they didn’t much increase their full-year forecast and Q4 guidance over what they gave during the Q2 report. The market has been pricing in very high growth expectations and as growth slows the price will become more powered by earnings. Since the fall the stock has stabilized and in my opinion remains a very strong buy. The CEO Jeff Green is very much a visionary in the advertising industry, trying to push the boundaries of analytical data-driven advertising. Over the next several years we will continue to see a big push toward programmatic advertising as well as native ads. These changes often happen more abruptly than you would expect, as services like Netflix (NFLX) and Hulu speed up adoption. If you have a good risk tolerance TTD will continue to be volatile but provide exceptional growth with great management. Lets take a peak at the Q3 quarter.

We believe that the pharmaceutical sector has received too much negative attention. Despite the risks, a few companies offer good entry opportunities. In our previous article, we recommended Akorn. Today, we have analyzed Teva. We believe that the company is in a position to thrive in the generic market, and that it is priced very attractively. Yet, we don’t like management’s aggressive M&A strategy. We don’t like very aggressive companies since large acquisitions rarely create value for the shareholders. Contributors argue that Teva has overpaid for Actavis (its latest and largest acquisition) by at least $14B. This does not surprise us since most M&A deals are too expensive. Previous corruption issues add further doubts. Unfortunately, there is no amount of profit that can convince us to invest in a company where we do not like the management. We have sold our positions in Bayer (OTCPK:BAYZF) for similar reasons. We like Bayer, but we have sold our shares because of the Bayer-Monsanto (NYSE:MON) acquisition.

Despite recent wobbles, U.S. large-cap stocks are having a decent year, up 6% year to date as measured by the S&P 500 (Source: Bloomberg as of 9/30/2016). This may pale in comparison to a year like 2013, but the performance is more than respectable given the anemic growth and the increasingly lengthy profits recession.

The question now is whether it can continue. But to answer that, we need to look at the bond market as much as the stock market.

U.S. equities continue to be buoyed by low interest rates. Many believe this dynamic can go on, since rates are probably going to remain low, creating a still high “equity risk premium” – the likely return from stocks over bonds. Stocks, which by many measures appear expensive, are still cheap because bonds are worse, this contention holds. Although there is a theoretical appeal to this argument, the relationship between stocks and bonds is not stable and tends to be less linear when rates are this low.

A nuanced stock-bond relationship

26-year-old Nigerian entrepreneur Iyinoluwa Aboyeji wants Silicon Valley to fund a future where Africa is included.

Aboyeji is the cofounder of Flutterwave, a payments API that makes it easier for banks and businesses to process payments across Africa. The service allows consumers to pay for things in their local currency; Flutterwave takes care of integrating banks and payment-service providers into its platform so businesses don’t have to take on the expense and burden.

U.S. investors just poured $10 million of fresh funding into it. This sizable round comes one year after Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan led a $24 million funding round into another Africa-focused startup, Andela.

Andela, also cofounded by Aboyeji, trains and connects African developers to global companies for work.

“It is critical that Africans are able to participate in the digital economy,” Aboyeji told CNN Tech.

More than half of global population growth over the next 30 years is expected to occur in Africa, according to a report from the United Nations. By 2035, the number of Africans joining the working age population is expected to exceed those entering it worldwide, the International Monetary Fund projects. There’s no universal payment method in Africa, and only 3% of Africans reportedly own own having a credit card. Other forms of payments include bank transfers and digital wallets.

As part of the agreement, Hikma will get to sell a generic version of the drug in question, narcolepsy treatment Xyrem, in 2023, for up to five years, while Jazz will get royalties on those sales.

Janney Montgomery Scotts Ken Trbovich upgraded the shares from Neutral to Buy on the news, and also increased his price target from $138 to $175. From his note:

While this comes about three years earlier than previous settlements with other generic filers, it eliminates the risk of an earlier launch. Six months thereafter Hikma may launch its own generic and others may potentially be able to launch as well. Importantly, Jazz will receive a meaningful royalty on sales, retain the right to launch its own AG, and can authorize other AGs after the initial 6-month Hikma period.

Jazz shares are up 8.9% to $153.2o at recent check.

Nissan is attractively valued with a P/E of 6.9 a P/B of 0.92 and P/S of 0.41 and a dividend yield of 4.2%. Renault’s stake of 43% in Nissan is worth ($43*0.43=) $18.5B. This means that the other operations of Renault including its 73.3% stake in leading Russian car manufacturer AutoVaz and 1.55% stake in Daimler are valued at only $8.5B. The market value of AutoVaz is $644M which means Renaults stake is worth approximately $472M. Daimler (OTCPK:DDAIF) is worth $77.4B which leads to a value of 1.2B for the 1.55% piece owned by Renault.

Apart from the locals, the global competitors have also made some quick moves to make their presence felt in China. According to Reuters, Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAY) has recently signed a preliminary deal to set up a joint venture with China-based Anhui Jianghuai Automobile (JAC) for making electric vehicles. However, the deal has enough hurdles in its path. Also, Daimler (OTCPK:DDAIY) (OTCPK:DDAIF) is also readying some electric cars for China under the Mercedes-Benz brand.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Other manufacturers are also planning to produce and sell all-electric trucks by the end of the current decade – Reuters reports that Navistar International Corp. (NYSE:NAV) and Volkswagen AG’s (OTCPK:VLKAF) Truck and Bus are working together to launch an electric medium duty truck by late 2019, while rival Daimler AG (OTCPK:DDAIF) has delivered the first of a smaller range of electric trucks to customers in New York. These are designed for shorter ranges than the Tesla semi but will likely see expanded ranges as battery technology advances.

    Daimler-Mercedes (OTCPK:DDAIF)

The Wall Street Journal reported that, “Daimler plans to unveil an electric concept car at (next month’s) Paris Auto show. Leaks suggest this will be accompanied by bullish plans to release at least six electric cars”. Of course, Daimler is already quite advanced in EVs with its partnership in China with BYD. As I write this, the Paris Auto show has begun, where “Daimler Mercedes-Benz unveiled a battery-powered sport-utility vehicle, a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model X, which will have a range of 310 miles on a single charge and is slated to launch in 2020. The vehicle will be part of a new sub-brand of Mercedes called EQ”.

Companies like Volvo (OTCPK:VOLVY), General Motors (NYSE:GM), Suzuki (OTCPK:SZKMF), Mercedes (OTCPK:DDAIF), and Ford (NYSE:F) are all using the small Swedish company’s tech. The most prominent use for zForce is in the dashboard infotainment center, but it’s also being used as gesture control for closing the tailgate or opening a door and even in using the steering wheel.

So without further ado, let’s take a closer look at the three: General Motors (NYSE:GM), Daimler AG (NASDAQOTH:DDAIF), and Delphi Automotive (NYSE:DLPH).

Cray Inc. (CRAY) has been one of those feast or famine small caps that have either made traders and investors a lot of money in recent years – or simply frustrated those who’ve held it for quite some time. However, at this point we think CRAY offers an attractive risk/reward opportunity on a long-term basis for investors interested in exposure to big data analytics and specifically super-computing – a growing need for large enterprise and institutions all over the world

Just where Donald Trump stands on climate change seems more uncertain than ever now that hes acknowledged to The New York Times that he sees some connectivity between human activity and increasing global temperatures.

Trumps remarks last week followed his disregard of climate change during his election campaign, including his pledge to pull the U.S. out of a 2015 agreement with nearly 200 other nations to keep temperatures from rising to catastrophic levels.

As for that accord struck in Paris last December, Trump now says hes keeping an open mind to it, according to the Times, whose publisher and editorial staff met with the president-elect at the newspapers headquarters in New York.

But while only time will tell whether the U.S. government will remain a leader in confronting climate change during the Trump administration, corporations here and around the world are making clear their determination to curb their emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases that most climate scientists blame for global warming.

stock market history: Rubicon Technology, Inc.(RBCN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

On Thursday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting small cap LED semiconductor stockRubicon Technology (NASDAQ: RBCN):

Rubicon Technology isn’t going to be a monster-sized winner for us, even if things go perfectly. About the best downside target we could hope for is the $0.60 area, where the stock was launched into an unsustainable uptrend a week ago. But, it’s a high-odds trade we can’t pass up. Yesterday’s doji bar after a big rally was a warning sign that we were transitioning into a net-selling environment. Today’s sharp pullback confirms we’re moving into that bearish mode.

stock market history: Sack Lunch Productions (SAKL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Tuesday morning, Sack Lunch Productions Inc (OTCMKTS:SAKL) posted its results for the third quarter (ending September 30th) of the year. They were as strong as you might suspect, with the top line rolling in at $5.35 million, and $142,983 of that turning into net income. That top and bottom line were actually down a bit from the year-ago comparables, though investors should bear in mind that the third quarter of last year was an unusually tough comparison of $6.02 million in sales, and income of $688,845. That was a true breakout quarter for the company’s signature event – Slide the City – and many participants may have come simply to see what it was. The follow-up year (this year), SAKL may not have had the same curiosity factor compelling people to attend.

Sack Lunch Productions, for the unfamiliar, it’s the name behind event-oriented businesses called Slide the City, Lantern Fest, The Dirty Dash, the Color Me Rad 5K run, and most recently, the Trike Riot. Those are a 1000-foot Slip-n-Slide, a flying lantern release, a mud run, a color-splashing fun run, and a tricycle riding course for kids of all ages and sizes. The events aren’t just fun – they’re FUN!

They’re also surprisingly profitable. While attendance and per-participant revenue varies, with the average revenue of $30 per participant being at the low end of the scale ( as is the average event attendance of 2500), gross revenue of $75,000 per event is a low-end expectation…

… not that SAKL hasn’t done some more number crunching of its own. This year, it expects to host roughly 250 events and drive $17 million worth of revenue per event, up about 80% from 2015’s top line. Some of those are being put on by Sack Lunch Productions itself, while others are being hosted by franchisees. Whatever the case, that works out to average revenue of $72,000 per event, with the franchised ones being low-cost to no-cost events for SAKL.

Regardless, the trend is an impressive one, all
