Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2018: Baker Hughes Incorporated(BHI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Brian Wu]

GE recently doubled down on its oil and gas business after merging it with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI) and took a majority 62.5% stake in the merged entity. The merged entity is now the second-largest oil services business and will help GE take full advantage of increased oil and gas production under the new administration.

  • [By Arie Goren]

The Oil and gas business represents a significant part of GE’s operations. Oil and gas segment revenues of $9.5 billion accounted for 10.5% of the company’s total revenues in the first nine months of 2016. In the same period in 2015, the segment’s revenues were much higher at $12.1 billion, 14.5% of GE’s total revenues for that period. In one of my previous articles about GE, I suggested that GE’s decision to combine its oil and gas business with one of the world’s leading oilfield services companies Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI)is a smart move. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil price has climbed 20% from the beginning of 2016 to $55.45 per barrel, and WTI crude oil price has increased 17.5% to $52.37 per barrel in the same period. As such, the U.S. rig count has started to recover, and oil and gas producers have begun to increase their capital spending. According to Baker Hughes, the average U.S. rig count for December 2016 increased by 54 from the prior month to 634 rigs. This development will benefit GE in the current quarter and much more after the merger with Baker Hughes.

    Noble Energygained 7.1% to $40.05, while the S&P 500 fell 0.3% to2,267.89.

Wunderlich’s Irene Haas explains why she’s a fan of the deal:

Noble Energy (NBL) has agreed to acquire Clayton Williams Energy Inc. (CWEI-$103.98, Hold) for $3.4 billion. The transaction has been approved by both boards and should close during 2Q17. NBL will gain 71,000 net acres in Reeves County, production of 10,000 boepd, and 2,400 gross locations (with 8,000 lateral length) in the Wolfcamp, with net un-risked resource potential of over 1 billion boe. Netting out production, acreage outside of Reeves County, and midstream assets, NBL valued the Reeves County acreage at~$32,000 per net acre. NBL has the balance sheet and the technical expertise to develop the project quickly and generate meaningful production and cash flow growth. We reiterate our Buy rating on NBL.

Noble Energy’s market capitalization rose to $17.2 billion from $16.1 billion on Friday. It reported a net lossof $2.4 billion on sales of $3 billion in 2015.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Noble Energy (NBL) : “Noble’s good. It’s a very well-run, conservative company. It should do well in this environment.”

Rex Wayne Tillerson’s Public Financial Disclosure Report makes interesting reading. Filed on 31st December last year he will have to liquidate much of this portfolio if he is to take up his government role. Although the portfolio does not give exact size of holdings, its value is estimated to be worth maybe $400 million according to press reports. Most of that is related to his ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) holdings and pension.

It’s important to say from the very beginning that what I’m about to write are just highlights from the Global Investor’s peering through the document. I can’t be sure if Tillerson has managed this portfolio actively or not and I am speculating with some thoughts below, and be aware the list is not exhaustive, as there are many holdings of different sizes including many ADRs from foreign companies. The filing can be found here.

Apart from the ExxonMobil holdings, he has large investments in real estate, single equities, equity ETFs, equity mutual funds, bonds, government bond and money market funds. I’m going to talk about some of the more interesting equity positions, as I think they might provide some insight, from a very smart man who has been at the center of global energy for the last 25 years.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Halliburton Company(HAL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

When Weatherford International (WFT) announced that it had named Halliburton (HAL) CFO Mark McCollumits new CEO, its shares jumped as some observers contended itincreased the odds of an acquisition by the oil-services giant. It looks like they picked the wrong oil-services giant, however, as Weatherford and Schlumberger (SLB) announced a joint venture late Friday, one that has sent Weatherford’s shares soaring and earned it an upgrade from Wells Fargo analystsJudson Bailey andColeman Sullivan. Among the year-end numbers, there isn’t that much that pops out as extraordinary. Halliburton ended 2016 with a $6.69 per-share loss. Much of that loss, though, was the $7.4 billion in charges related to asset impairments, goodwill writedowns, and the $4.06 billion it had to charge for the termination of the merger with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI). So when looking at the company’s year-end results, do keep in mind that those are heavily skewed by one-time items that probably won’t have much of a material impact on the business in the coming year. Looking at operational income, we see that international markets held up rather well throughout the year, while the North American market suffered.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: CGG(CGG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

First up is French oil service firm CGG Veritas (CGG)
. The Eurozone-based energy stock hasn’t exactly posted blockbuster performance in 2013, but investors who ignore CGG for the final stretch of the year could be making a big mistake. That’s because of a bullish technical pattern that’s emerging in shares right now.

CGG spent most of the last eight months looking anything but bullish. But an ascending triangle pattern is changing that. The pattern is formed by horizontal resistance to the upside at $26, and uptrending support to the below shares. Basically, as CGG bounces in between those two technical levels, it’s getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above $26. When that happens, traders have a buy signal.

The ascending triangle pattern in CGG Veritas isn’t exactly textbook. That’s because the setup is forming at the bottom of a downtrend, rather than in the middle of an uptrend – but it’s a mistake to get caught up on the textbook pictures of what trading patterns are supposed to look like. On a move through $26, the trading implications are just as actionable.

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

Should oil prices recover, we believe that deepwater drilling activity growth should lag growth in US shale activity, as project economics is generally better in US shales, and E&Ps involved in US shales are generally quicker to react. Deepwater activity is largely comprises a handful of companies (Petrobras (PBR), Statoil (STO), Total (TOT), Shell (RDS.A), BP (BP), ONGC, ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX)) and it is unlikely that these companies can meaningfully increase their rig demand in a short period of time to absorb the current oversupply. Thus, should oil prices rise in 2018, rig demand may increase, but likely not enough to tighten the market, given that supply equaling 43% of current working rig count is stacked and new supply equaling 25% of working rig count is under-construction and should be entering the market in the coming years. As a result, while we expect some improvement in rig utilization owing to rig retirements, it will unlikely be strong enough to meaningfully improve rates in 2018 above spot levels. Any demand increase in the interim could slow rig retirements materially, and be self-defeating. We thus are Sell rated on Transocean, Atwood and Noble.

BP plc (ADR) (NYSE: BP), Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE: RDS-A) (NYSE: RDS-B) and Statoil ASA(ADR) (NYSE: STO) are expected to outperform their peers by offering: 1) the greatest rate of change in cost reduction through technology and innovation, 2) upstream portfolios with an attractive risk to reward profile and 3) sufficient liquidity to invest in future growth.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We believe that the equity market has neutralised much of its underweight energy positioning in 4Q/1Q, but was caught by the sharp rally in crude from end-January. Our base-case sees oil prices still higher by end-2016 (we see >$50/bbl), albeit with a choppy 2Q likely ahead. In this scenario a modest, rather than fully-fledged price-recovery we continue to place a lot of importance on self-help in driving ROE expansion (as opposed to relying simply on oil-leverage). Value-adjusted, we like the self-help stories around Total, Chevron, Statoil (STO), Royal Dutch Shell and Eni (E) in the group. Total is on the Citi European Focus list.

Top 10 Energy Stocks For 2018: Baker Hughes Incorporated(BHI)

Since the moment it was announced, we’ve been highly bullish on the complicated-but-intriguing deal that would combine the oilfield services unit of General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) and all of sector rival Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI).

A recently updated map from HowMuch.net ranking the world’s most valuable brands by country in 2017 shows that Apple Inc. (AAPL) lost its spot as the US’s most valuable brand. Of these, the top 10 most valuable brands with shares or ADRs traded in the US are:

US-based search engine and Google parent Alphabet Inc (GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Swiss food giant Nestle (OTCPK:NSRGF) Korea’s Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF) – part of a larger group of Samsung brands China’s (and the world’s) largest bank ICBC (OTCPK:IDCBF) Japanese automaker Toyota (TM) Irish medical equipment maker Medtronic (MDT) Royal Dutch Shell, the oil company (RDS.A) Royal Bank of Canada (RY) Spanish bank Santander (SAN), and Hong Kong-based insurer AIA (OTCPK:AAGIY)

In 11th and 12 place, by market cap, are British telecom Vodafone Plc (VOD) and German automaker BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY), whose brands are valued at 2-4x AIA’s according the map, but whose market caps trade at significantly lower multiples in the current market environment.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

In sum, the three companies are equally valued at generous multiples. It is difficult to choose one of them based on fundamentals or valuations, but we like the strategy of Nestl茅 and P&G more than Unilever. Therefore, we recommend investing in these companies only if someone is interested in a limited but relatively safe upside potential. Good entry prices would be as follows: Nestl茅 (OTCPK:NSRGF) at CHF 70.1 or $70.1 for the ADR , P&G at $83.6 and Unilever (OTC:UNLVF) at 34.1 or $38 for the ADR (NYSE:UN).

Rooftop solar energy could get a stylish makeover if Tesla gets its way.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based tech company, known for its luxury electric cars, will begin selling roof tiles that convert solar energy into electricityin April, CEO Elon Musk says.

The product, which Tesla will offerthrough its SolarCity division, will be a no-brainer for homeowners, Musk has said.

“The base of the proposition would be, would you like a roof that looks better than the normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less, and by the way, generates electricity?” Musk told investors in November. “It’s like why would you get anything else? Maybe there’s a reason. I’m not sure why.”

While the idea has been talked about for a long time in the solar community, no one has been able to make it work on a large scale at an affordable price. Questions remain about the efficiency of using tiles instead of panels, and about the cost. But there’s no question that it would improve the look of homes compared to rooftop panels.

Evercore ISI’s James West and team are starting to feel really good about the potential of the General Electric (GE)-Baker Hughes (BHI) merger. They explain why:

GE recently doubled down on its oil and gas business after merging it with Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI) and took a majority 62.5% stake in the merged entity. The merged entity is now the second-largest oil services business and will help GE take full advantage of increased oil and gas production under the new administration.

  • [By William Patalon III]

Since the moment it was announced, we’ve been highly bullish on the complicated-but-intriguing deal that would combine the oilfield services unit of General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) and all of sector rival Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI).
