BEIJING–Prices in China rose less than expected in February as demand for food eased after the Lunar New Year holiday, the third piece of Chinese data that raised eyebrows this week.

China’s consumer-price index inched up 0.8% in February from a year earlier, compared with a 2.5% gain in January, the National Bureau of Statistics said Thursday. The key inflation gauge undershot a 1.6% gain forecast by 14 economists in a Wall Street Journal poll and remained well below the 3% inflation ceiling the government has set for the year.

This comes after China reported an unexpected jump in its foreign-exchange reserves after months of decline and its first trade deficit in three years. Economic data during the first two months of the year tend to be volatile because the timing of China’s largest holiday shifts slightly from year to year, affecting consumption and production schedules.

Vista Outdoor is suffering a double-digit stock price plunge after the gun and ammo maker reported a slide in sales and profit since the presidential election.

The stock price dropped more than 20% on Thursday after Vista Outdoor (VSTO) reported a 5% drop in quarterly sales.

“Given the magnitude of today’s sell-off of shares of Vista Outdoor, it appears the investment community was quite surprised by management commentary regarding the deteriorating conditions in the overall shooting sports market in recent weeks,” said Rommel Dionisio, gun industry analyst for Wunderlich Securities.

Vista Outdoor of Farmington, Utah, owns dozens of brands including AR-15 maker Savage Arms and the ammo makers CCI, Blazer, Estate Cartridge, American Eagle and Federal Premium Ammunition. The company also owns non-gun brands favored by outdoor enthusiasts, like CamelBak, and various scope companies including Bushnell.

Dionisio said the company reported “elevated inventory levels” from “inflated ordering prior to the presidential election,” fearing that Democrat Hillary Clinton would win and seek tougher gun control laws.

Barclays analysts Mark Moskowitz and Daniel Gaide contend that IBM’s earnings “suggest [a] turnaround might be elusive.” They explain why:

The major Y/Y deterioration in gross margin, and IBMs dependence on discrete items to pad EPS, stand to frustrate investors. We highlighted last week that the stocks rally could come to an end as it is time to show progress on the turnaround. 1Q results did not deliver much progress and could signal that investors might have given IBM too much credit to deliver on its ambitious turnaround built around the cloud and cognitive. We recommend investors stay on the sideline.

Since August 2010, the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES:^DJI) have risen from below 10,000 to within a fraction of a point of 20,000. Doubling in just over six years is an impressive feat, especially given that the Dow also pays a respectable dividend yield of more than 2% on top of its rise. Yet although all 30 stocks that are currently in the Dow have risen over that period, some haven’t done nearly as well as the overall average. In particular, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), IBM (NYSE:IBM), and Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) have underperformed the Dow since 2010. Let’s look more closely at these stocks and whether they can start pulling more of their weight in 2017 and beyond.

Universal basic income (UBI) is becoming respectable. Less than a decade ago, its principal supporters were weed-smoking hippies and Star Trek aficionados: serious people either laughed or sneered at it. But now, it counts among its supporters a growing number of top economists, entrepreneurs and financiers. Governments around the world are evaluating its use, and some are embarking on pilot studies. Businesses are partnering with not-for-profit organizations to conduct serious research into the costs and benefits of UBI.

And now, the IMF has joined the party. In its latest Fiscal Monitor, it says UBI could reduce income inequality and protect people affected by technological change and globalization.

Income inequality between countries has fallen significantly, especially in the last decade, but this has been offset by rising inequality within countries. The IMF says that 53% of countries have experienced widening income inequality: this includes most advanced countries, where rising inequality is driven by very large rises in the income of the top 1%. Over time, persistent income inequality inevitably causes wealth inequality.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced the annual inflation adjustments for a number of tax-related provisions for 2018, including, of course, the latest tax rate schedules and tax tables.

These are the numbers for the tax year 2018 beginning January 1, 2018 (assuming that there are no big changes as the result of tax reform). They are not the numbers and tables that youll use to prepare your 2017 tax returns in 2018 (you’ll find them here). You’ll use these numbers to prepare your 2018 tax returns in 2019.

If you aren’t expecting any significant changes in 2018, you can use the updated tax tables and other tax numbers to estimate your liability. If you expect to make more money or have a chance in your circumstances (i.e., get married, buy a house, start a business, have a baby), consider adjusting your withholding or tweaking your estimated tax payments.

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: Pound/Rand(PX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The last twelve months haven’t been kind to Praxair (PX) and Air Products & Chemicals (APD), but UBS analyst John Roberts and team argue that’s about to change, as they upgrade their shares to Buy from Neutral arguing that their earnings can withstand a slowing global economy:

In our view, the two stocks are more alike than different. NTM P/Es are within ~0.5 pts of each other. Both stocks have declined ~20% from their historical highs the largest corrections in 20+ years aside from the financial crisis…

Industrial gas stocks have normally grown through changes in FX, oil & China demand within normal historical ranges. And investor concerns around China forAir Products & Chemicals may still prove much bigger than reality. Nevertheless, the combination of FX & oil sector impacts on Praxair, and FX & China issues for Air Products & Chemicals, have been much larger than previously seen. With oil already down, the dollar already appreciated, & China concerns already heightened we believe forward basis would appear to carry only normal risks (& lower if FX & oil are mean-reverting, which some theories support).

Normal high single digit EPS growth projected for both in 2017 vs 2016: Four large firms serve 70%+ of the global merchant gas market, and price normally contributes ~2% to growth. Customer older captive units being outsourced contributes another 2%. Secular drivers for oxygen include energy savings (i.e. O2 burns more efficiently than air), life sciences (healthcare & microbial processes) nitrogen secular drivers include increasing purity requirements (food freezing & semiconductors). Topline growth ~2x global GDP more normal, with EPS growth ~2x sales growth due to high fixed costs (key variable costs are inexpensive air & power).

Financial crisis demand drop was only a few %, in line with global GDP drop Most chemicals volumes dropped 10%+ (some 40%

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: Twitter, Inc.(TWTR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Adam Levy]

That’s not to say Instagram hasn’t done a good job on its own. It says it has 8 million businesses with profiles — the equivalent of Pages on Facebook. For comparison, Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) said it had identified 9 million active businesses on its social network around this time last year.

  • [By Jim Robertson]

There could be further risk or opportunity on the horizon later this summer. According to JPMorgan (one of the IPO underwriters), an additional 1.2 billion Snap Incshares, or 84% of the company’s shares outstanding, could flood the market when the company’s lock-up period expires from July 31 to August 31. When that happened to Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR), shares fell 18% to what was then an all-time low; but in the case of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB), shares actuallyjumped 11%.

  • [By Vikram Nagarkar]

San Francisco, California-based Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)hasn’t had a great run this year, and things don’t seem to be getting any better lately. On 9th November, Twitter COO, Adam Bain, announced his departure from the company after a 6 year stint. Less than a month later, on Friday,Twitter’s VP of global online sales, Richard Alfonsi also followed suit, announcing his exit via a ‘tweet’. What’s worrying is that Alfonsi’s departure is just one of the many executive departuresthis year. Separately, Keith Coleman will be the third person to don the hat of Twitter’s product head this year, a fact that illustrates how bad things have been. Beyond the obvious reasons why investors should be worried, this executive exodus comes with a less visible impact that could seriously dent shareholders.

  • [By Tom Gentile]

An ETF is a fund that tracks indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. ETFs basically let you trade an entire sector instead of having to pick and choose specific stocks to trade within a sector. ETFs are also a great way for you to hedge against rising interest rates. When it comes to equities, a good ETF to monitor is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE Arca: DIA). For bonds, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE Arca: TLT) is a good way to gauge the bullishness or bearishness of the overall bond market.

The ESPN commentator will become the first ever female full-time television game analyst for the NBA at the national level.

Burke has covered professional and college basketball for ESPN since 1991. The veteran commentator has worked select games in past seasons, but her new full-time status means she will provide analysis for upwards of 35 to 40 games between the regular season and the playoffs.

Burke will also keep her role as lead ESPN NBA sideline reporter for the NBA Conference Finals and NBA Finals on ESPN’s sister network, ABC.

ESPN is expected to make the announcement of Burke’s new position on Tuesday morning.

the share market: Ultra Petroleum Corp.(UPL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By STOCKPICKR]

As energy commodity prices have sold off in recent months, so too have the E&P stocks that pull those resources out of the ground. And Ultra Petroleum (UPL) has been no exception. The good news is that you don’t need to be an expert technical trader to figure out why this stock looks toxic here — the setup in shares of Ultra Petroleum is about as simple as they get.

UPL is bouncing its way lower in a textbook downtrending channel, a price setup that’s formed by a pair of parallel trendlines that have kept UPL range-bound since April. The price channel in UPL identifies the high-probability range for shares to stay within, and so, with shares pressing up against resistance for the eighth time since this price channel kicked off, it makes sense to be a seller on the next bounce lower.

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.
