What happened

Downbeat holiday sales reports byKohl’s(NYSE:KSS) andMacy’s(NYSE:M) pushed the department store sector, and much of retail, in the red on Thursday. As of 11:38 a.m. EST, Kohl’s was down 19.5%, Macy’s was down 14.4%, and peers includingNordstrom(NYSE: JWN) andJ.C. Penney(NYSE: JCP) also tumbled, falling 9.8% and 6.7%, respectively.

So what

The news was not a big surprise as department store chains came into the quarter struggling, posting comparable sales declines as consumers increasingly take their business to e-commerce outlets likeAmazon.com.

Macy’s, considered the leader of the industry, came into the holiday season with seven straight quarterly comparable sales declines, and said that sales at established stores fell 2.1% in November and December. CEO Terry Lundgren summed up the quarter saying, “While our sales trend is consistent with the lower end of our guidance, we had anticipated sales would be stronger. We believe that our performance during the holiday season reflects the broader challenges facing much of the retail industry.” He noted that online sales were up by double digits, and said performance was strong in some areas like apparel, fine jewelry, and furniture. The company said full-year comparable sales would come in at the low end of its previously stated -2.5% to -3% range, and lowered its full-year earnings per share forecast to $2.95-$3.10 from $3.15-$3.40.

Smucker’s hiked peanut butter and jelly prices earlier this year, and the results have investors salivating.

The Smucker brand is known for PB&J, but it also owns Folgers, sells Dunkin’ Donuts-branded coffee at grocery stores and has a number of pet food lines, including Meow Mix and 9 Lives.

As coffee prices soared last year, Smucker had difficulty raising bean prices in a competitive market. So it instead hiked prices on Jif and Smucker’s-brand jellies, jams and peanut butters around 6% in January.

The gamble paid off. Sales grew 1% last quarter, and profit in its consumer food division was up 10%. That offset an 18% decline in coffee earnings.

There’s more buzz-worthy news: Coffee has been steadily getting cheaper. Its price has fallen more than 20% over the past year. That’s a trend Smucker’s Chief Financial Officer Mark Belgya said he expects to continue into 2018.

That was enough to send Smucker’s (SJM) stock up 10% Thursday.

stock exchange: Corning Incorporated(GLW)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

The gross profit margin for CORNING INC is rather high; currently it is at 51.58%. Regardless of GLW’s high profit margin, it has managed to decrease from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 9.33% trails the industry average.

  • [By John Bromels]

2016 was a good year to be a Corning(NYSE:GLW) investor. The company’s stock rose 35.5% over the course of the year, handily outpacing the broader market.

  • [By Peter Graham]

Back on December 5th of 2013, we added Corning (GLW) to our list around $16 and change. The stock ended up moving to a high of just over $25 per share early last year for roughly a 50% gain. Well, the stock has since come off again trading all the way back down to under $16 per share back in August of last year, before finding its way back up above $18 just yesterday. The context here is two-fold. First, the valuation metrics for GLW are once again suggesting another undervalued opportunity for a Company that is the clear leader in specialty glass and ceramics.

  • [By Lisa Levin]

3M Co (NYSE: MMM) agreed to sell substantially all of its communication markets division to Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) for $900 million.

Corning expects the deal adding $0.07 to $0.09 per share in FY19 earnings.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

GLW, with its decline in revenue, underperformed when compared the industry average of 1.7%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues fell by 10.6%. Weakness in the company’s revenue seems to have hurt the bottom line, decreasing earnings per share.

  • [By Craig Jones]

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) also had a high options volume in the first half of the session, said Jon Najarian. Almost 8,000 contracts of the December 32 calls were traded and Najarian jumped in. He's going to hold the position for a week.

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Invest In 2018: Applied Micro Circuits Corporation(AMCC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Piyush Arora]

AMD, along with other server-grade chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm (NSDQ:QCOM), Cavium (NSDQ:CAVM) and AMCC (NSDQ:AMCC), operates in the remaining minuscule 0.8% of the market. So, each of the aforementioned companies operate with a practically non-existent market share, compared to Intels shipments of course. This also means that these firms (AMD, Qualcomm etc.) have plenty of room to grow. This would be subject to good product releases of course, but at least this way, the law of large numbers isnt working against them.

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Invest In 2018: EQT Midstream Partners, LP(EQM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Elizabeth Balboa]

Not only does Jana consider the deal price overvalued, but it looks to redirect EQT’s focus to a breakup of pipeline operations to transform the core company into an exploration & production firm. Companies in the oil storage business can take advantage of what is known as contango, which is when forward prices are higher than current prices, allowing the purchase of cheap oil to be stored and sold at a later date while securing income using derivatives. Five companies that appear to be in a good position to take advantage of reduced oil storage capacity are Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE: MMP), Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EDP), Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE: SEP), Buckeye Partners (NYSE: BPL) and EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQM).

Top 10 Performing Stocks To Invest In 2018: Cubic Corporation(CUB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Robertson]

On Friday, small cap Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) had closed up 10.26% with shares rising again in early Monday trading. Cubic Corporation designs, integrates and operates systems, products and services focused in the transportation, defense training and secure communications markets. As the parent company of two major business units, the Companysmission is to increase situational awareness and understanding for customers worldwide. Cubic Transportation Systems is a leading integrator of payment and information technology and services to create intelligent travel solutions for public transit authorities and operators whileCubic Global Defense is a leading provider of realistic combat training systems, secure communications and networking and highly specialized support services for military and security forces of the U.S. and allied nations.

  • [By WWW.GURUFOCUS.COM]

In actuality, we think the reverse is true for several reasons. We believe that there is a higher level of investor neglect in the small cap space, and neglect, in an investment sense, creates valuation discounts from fair value. Small cap names are less well-known and understood. For example, most of you have never heard of Cubic Corporation (NYSE:CUB), but you have likely used the public transportation systems in New York, London, Sydney, etc. that rely on Cubic for fare collection services. Likewise, Multi-Color is a confusing name for the second largest label maker in the world. To understand these businesses, investors need to dig a little deeper with active fundamental research – a Third Avenue strength.

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) shares were also up, gaining 15 percent to $61.45. Cubic reported Q4 net income of $13.2 million, after posting a loss in the year-ago period. Cubic also disclosed that it has been selected for contract from Boston MBTA to deliver next-generation fare payment system.

Hot High Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now

Few things get investors’ attention quicker than a good, old-fashioned financial mania.

Whether it’s Dutch tulip bulbs in century or Internet stocks in 1999, a chart like the one for lithium below gets speculators’ hearts pumping.

After spending years in the dumps, the price of lithium began to skyrocket over the past year or so. In China, lithium carbonate spot prices soared from $7,000 per ton in October 2015 to over $25,000 per ton within about nine months. Although prices in China have pulled back recently to around $20,000 per ton, lithium carbonate contract prices elsewhere are rising or stable around $8,000 per ton and around $12,000-13,000 in China.

Hot High Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Panasonic Corporation (PCRFY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

During the early stages of a new innovation, interdependent architectures and integrated companies best optimize performance and functionality. This trend has played out in computing and handsets, and we see the same trend playing out in EVs. We find Tesla and BYD1 , by far, the most vertically integrated players in EVs, with huge scale advantages. In addition, LG Chem, Panasonic (PCRFY), Samsung SDI, BYD, and CATL are clear scale leaders in batteries (CATL is not publicly traded. All but Samsung SDI and BYD are not covered by Bernstein.).

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Clean Technica reported on September 1 that “Sony is entering the EV battery manufacturing industry”. And “considering that electric vehicle batteries are going to be the main supply bottleneck for the upcoming auto market’s embrace of EVs, the entry of Sony into the field is very notable. Most of the other manufacturers (Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY), LG Chem (OTC:LGCLF), etc.) already have more or less all of their production capacity locked up for the coming years – meaning there’s not much left for the auto manufacturers that are running behind, thereby limiting potential EV sales for the firms in question. Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) entry into the field should open things up a bit more”. Certainly a good move by Sony and helpful for the EV companies that will find themselves in need of batteries, and limited availability, should EVs reach 10% by 2020.

A Unilever vs. Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) showdown seems to be something out of an alternative, weird universe. But that’s exactly what has been happening in the Asia-Pacific region, where Unilever is now a major seller of air and water purification devices. The acquisitions of Qinyuan and Pureit water purifiers, as well as the acquisition of Sweden-based Blueair in 2016, reflects Unilever’s latest growth strategy of reducing exposure to low-growth brands in favor of greater investments in higher-growth products with strong social and environmental credentials.

SMMYY is a subsidiary of the Sumitomo Group. SMMYY is a major smelter and refiner of copper, nickel and gold in Japan, and has a 27.5% stake in the Ambatovy Nickel Project in Madagascar, along with Sherritt International and Korea Resources Corp. Feedstock for the refinery is nickel cobalt mixed sulphide from its Taganito and Coral Bay mines in the Philippines (noting the Philippines is a risky supply source at this time). Sumitomo supply Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) who supply Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA); however, this can change. Generally, I like the stock; however, at this time, valuation looks full, trading on a 2017 PE of 32.8, and 2018 PE of 14.8. Good to buy after a pullback if that occurs.

(NYSE: M): $50 off Samsung Gear S3 and Gear S2 Smart Watches Wal-Mart: Samsung HDTVs over 50% off MSRP Amazon: Amazon Echo for $139.99, a savings of $40

Most online retailers will have Cyber Monday deals. Some, including Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), are promoting the deals generally without preview promotion. ItsCyber Monday deals will begin on Sunday and many of them will also be available in brick-and-mortar stores.

But the changing consumer behavior has hit the brick and mortar chains hard. In a press release, Macy’s (NYSE:M) announced that it would be closing 68 stores and laying off more than 10000 people after the company reported a dismal quarter. The same store sales declined by 2.1%. It is not Macy’s alone, other departmental stores are facing similar challenges. The holiday season report led to ablood bath in retail stocks yesterday. Macy’s was down 13%, JCP (NYSE:JCP) down 7.2% and Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS) was down 19%. Those are pretty scary numbers. On the other hand, Amazon stock gained more than 3% yesterday.

And while L Brands was the best performer, retailers made up half of the 10 best performing stocks in the benchmark today: Nordstrom (JWN) advanced 2.9% to $44.71, Gap (GPS) jumped 5.1% to $24.06, Kohl’s (KSS) climbed 5.6% to $39.60, andBed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), which reported earnings last night, gained 3.4% to $39.08.

By now, we all know retailers are facing a tough time. More and more, people are choosing to shop online, putting sales under pressure and leaving many with too many stores. Some department stores have begun to acknowledge the problems–but will they be able to adjust quickly enough in a rapidly changing landscape? Credit Suisse analyst Christian Bussand team believe this process is “well under way” but that didn’t stop them from downgrading Kohl’s (KSS) and J.C. Hot Tech Stocks To Own For 2018: Staffing 360 Solutions, Inc.(STAF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Staffing agencies like Robert Half International Inc. (NYSE:RHI) and ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE:MAN) may want to look over their shoulder. Though both are bigger and more established, their size and the waning need for physical, human workers in an increasingly-digital and roboticized world ultimately works against both organizations. That paradigm shift doesn’t matter much to a young, up-coming-staffing agency called Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STAF) though. Indeed, the trend of computer-based everything leaves Staffing 360 Solutions in the proverbial cat-bird’s seat. Its fiscal Q2 numbers verify the company is in the right place at the right time.

Those numbers? Revenue of $47.1 million was up 14%, and gross profits of $8.1 million were higher by 8.4% on a year-over-year basis. Moreover, the net loss of $1.5 million was a marked improvement on the year-ago loss of $3.5 million, and the EBITDA of $1.4 million was about the same. Operating expenses fell from 22% of revenue a year earlier to only 17% last quarter, with more such progress on the way.

Perhaps most important, Staffing 360 Solutions saw organic growth of 7%, meaning the top line bumped up by that much not because of acquisitions, but because it’s existing divisions expanded their client base and billings by 7%.

And last quarter’s progress has been the norm for several quarters now.

While STAF is proving outpacing the growth from bigger names like ManpowerGroup and Robert Half International, it can’t come as a complete surprise. Staffing 360 Solutions is focused on the IT sliver of the staffing industry, connecting companies with the technology-skilled programmers, cybersecurity specialists, and computer networking personnel modern organizations increasingly need.

There are several data nuggets that point in the same direction, but perhaps none as telling as a recent conclusion from technology research outfit IDC speaks volumes. IDC believes that by the

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Unless you just woke up for a 2+ year sleep in a cryogenic chamber, you’re probably well aware that newly-elected President Trump is working to reduce the number of immigrants — temporary or permanent — allowed into the country. Feel free to argue the good or bad aspects of that effort, based on your political leanings. Just don’t get so caught up in the political argument that you end up ignoring the opportunity that’s surfacing because of the mission President Trump has no intention of failing. What’s that opportunity? Here’s a hint – Staffing 360 Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ:STAF) is a huge beneficiary.

The crux of the battle is the United States’ H-1B program, which grants foreign workers a Visa, allowing them to come into the United States to work. The technology sector is a notorious supporter of the H-1B program, as it allows them to hire hordes of qualified programmers, engineers, and computer people and pay those workers much less than they’d have to pay an American worker to perform the same function.

Though they all cite a lack of qualified American workers as the need for the H-1B program, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) are just two of the biggest fans of the programs, if their use of H-1B workers is any indication. Microsoft has laid off American workers while adding foreign H-1B employees to its ranks. Amazon.com also favors hiring foreign talent to perform much of its technological work.

With Trump working to drastically lower the number of work Visas it issues in any given year, the tech industry says it will lose access to qualified employees. Though neither company can say it, they’ll also lose access to lower-cost labor.

As was said, stand on either side of the fence you want. Just don’t look past what the impact of the new policy means for the aforementioned Staffing 360 Solutions…

….which is? Staffing 360 Solutions is an IT staffing firm, providing the qualified

  • [By Matthew Briar]

It’s not blatantly observable anywhere. But, for anyone willing to connect the dots and do the digging in several places, the message is clear — there’s a huge and fast-growing need for more information technology workers, and that plays right into the hand Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STAF) is holding.

There are several data nuggets that point in the same direction, but perhaps none as telling as the recent finding from technology research outfit IDC, which found that by the end of 2017, two-thirds of the CEOs of Global 2000 companies will have digital transformation at the center of their corporate strategies. How are they going to make that happen? Deloitte recently posted some research of its own that should shed some light on the idea. The giant accounting form observed that “In order to maintain the competitive pace of innovation, companies find themselves engaged in a global war for talent.”

high yield investments

Those investors looking for 100% gains may be able to cash in on a counter-trend rally in Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) with a move as small as 6% by July.

Here is the simple option trade that could yield as much as 100% or more by July 21st. I put this trade on yesterday and added 50% more to the position this morning on weakness.

I bought the July 21st $65 call option this morning for 1.41. What that means to newer investors is this: I have the right of ownership in Gilead until July 21st expiration at $65, the option’s intrinsic value is worth zero. However, if Gilead trades to $68 before July 21 expiration, the option would be worth $3 plus any premium tied to it.

Gilead has been stuck in a downtrend for a couple of years now. I recently wrote an article asking if this was the time to buy and pointed out further possible downside as earnings appear to be falling along with future guidance. Interested investors can read that article here. I now see a counter-trend rally as a real possibility and believe the stock could see the $70 level in the next 60 days.

The question now is more about speed of EV implementation. On the supply side, it has been great to see LAC, Pilbara Minerals (OTCPK:PILBF) and Altura Mining (OTCPK:ALTAF) get funding, but the continued issues with Albemarle’s (NYSE:ALB) LaNegra II expansion and Orocobre (OTCPK:OROCF) ramping up to Phase 1 capacity of 17,500 tonnes/year of lithium carbonate are further evidence that lithium projects take time and have considerable execution risk.

Looking at recent historical deals, we arrive at a $18-$23 potential deal range. We analyzed transactions that have been announced over the past four years and involved companies catering to a higher income customer. These deals include Southern Tide (acquired by Oxford Industries (OXM)), Joe’s Jeans (acquired by Sequential Brands Group (SQBG)), prAna (acquired by Columbia Sportswear (COLM)), The Jones Group (acquired by Sycamore Partners [private] and Juicy Couture (acquired by Authentic Brands Group [private]). The average EV/EBITDA multiple of these transactions are 12.9x (in line with KATE’s 5-year historical average of 12.1x) and implies a potential deal range of $22-$23. Given revised commodity deck forecasts (particularly for Steel and Gold) and improved Balance Sheet health (Steels, Precious and Industrials Metals) we are upgrading our ratings on several stocks in our coverage. In Steels, we have increased our rating from Hold to Buy on Nucor (NUE) and from Sell to Hold on US Steel. We have also upgraded Kinross Gold (KGC) to a Hold on valuation…On higher-than-peer valuations, we reiterate Sell-rated Coeur Mining (CDE), Franco-Nevada (FNV), Goldcorp (GG), Teck Resources (TCK) and highly leveraged AK Steel given preference to issue further equity if possible.
