Top 10 Value Stocks To Invest In 2018

DryShips (DRYS) finally filed a 6-K after the close on July 25th that provided an update on its equity issuance for the period July 17th to July 25th. This was a break from prior disclosure patterns of providing updates on Fridays after the close or Mondays before the open as discussed in my article titled “Changing Its Disclosure Patterns?” The update on DRYS’ equity issuance was disappointing since the shares issued and the equity raised fell short of my expectations and, judging by the 20% losses in the stock into the late afternoon on July 26th, the market’s also. The following table summarizes the issuance for the period ending July 25th.

DryShips Equity Issuance Analysis Shares O/S July 7th (millions) 5.10 Funding Gap July 14th (millions) $5.56 Dates of Issuance July 17th – July 25th Shares Issued (millions) 14.08 Avg Issuance Price $1.88 July 25th Close $0.96 Shares O/S July 25th (millions) 19.18 Est of Value of Equity Issued $26.49

A close read of the 6-K reveals that most of the 14 million share issuance occurred July 21st through July 25th due to the pendency of the 1 for 7 reverse stock split announced on July 18th with an Effective Date of July 21st. The stock issued during this three day trading period equaled a bit more than 15% of the more than 91 million shares traded. Although this falls within the range of prior issuance percentages, it was a bit surprising that DRYS did not take advantage of the heavy trading volumes and price spikes and drive issuance closer to 20% of the shares traded. This resulted in lower equity proceeds than anticipated.

Regeneron’s dropped 14% during the last three months, the result of a patent suit with Amgen(AMGN) over its anti-cholesterol drug Praluent, which a judge had set it wouldn’t be able to sell in the U.S.Then last night, there was finally good news: Ajudge ordered a stay, which would allow Regeneron to sell Praluent, and resulted in a 2% pop in its shares last night after the market close. "Oh man, I already missed out on the 'Melt Up.' I should have bought exciting tech companies like Facebook and Google a year ago. Now, it's too late…"   I hear that all the time. But – my friend – you're wrong…   You haven't missed the Melt Up – at all.   In the last year, Alphabet (GOOGL) – the parent company of Google – is up nearly 16%. Facebook (FB) is up around 33%.   Those are good returns, for sure. But they don't tell the full story…   The surprising truth is that over the last year, the boring, old-school companies of the Dow Jones Industrial Average have beaten the "hip" tech names in the Nasdaq Composite Index.   Take a look…

Time To Favor Optionality: Most macro data are similar to, or better than, when the merger was announced. As a result, the same returns have been obtainable, with significantly less stress, simply through owning 3M (MMM) or a basket of chemical companies that approximate the Dow-DuPont portfolio. Relative to the chemical sector, performance has been average, leverage appears reasonable but near-term FCF less-than compelling partly due to new capacity ramping. With the merger likely to close in the near-term (90% chance, in our view), we believe Dow-DuPont will have an opportunity to show how scale creates optionality. The overhaul at Celanese (CE) over the past few years shows the way.

Which biotechs have high prospects of being acquired in the near future? Many would place Incyte (NASDAQ:INCY) near the top of the list. The company’s oncology portfolio makes it an attractive target. But a target for whom?

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD), Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY), and Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) stand out as three of the most likely suitors for Incyte. Here’s why these big drugmakers could be interested in making a significant acquisition.

A perfect match

When industry observers were asked in 2016 which company they thought was most likely to buy Incyte, Gilead Sciences was the top answer. In some ways, Gilead and Incyte make an ideal match.

Investors are anxious for Gilead to make an acquisition to help plug the leak from its declining hepatitis C franchise sales. Gilead’s executives have also stated that a strategic deal ranks as one of their top priorities. The company’s CEO even identified strengthening Gilead’s oncology product lineup as a primary objective, but also mentioned augmenting its inflammation and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) pipelines.

Not only does Jana consider the deal price overvalued, but it looks to redirect EQT’s focus to a breakup of pipeline operations to transform the core company into an exploration & production firm.
