J.M. Smucker(SJM) is falling Monday, after Morgan Stanley’sMatthew Grainger and his team cut their rating on the stock, citing pricing pressures from Wal-Mart (WMT) and growing competition from private-labels.

    Getty Images

Grainger slash Smucker to Underweight from Equal Weight, and shaved $6 off his price target, to $126. He also cites what he calls “sustained” challenges in both its coffee and pet food business, as well as“below-average strategic optionality.”

At the same time, he also upgraded Pinnacle Foods (PF) to Overweight from Equal Weight, and raised his price target to $63 from $58, on its double-digit earnings growth and what he sees as superior execution.

Nonetheless, he sees many of the packaged food companies in his coverage, from Smucker to Pinnacle, as subject to pressure from Wal-Mart and off-brand rivals. From the note:

Walmart comprises ~22% of sales across our coverage, a figure that has increased in recent years even as the retailers total grocery sales have grown at an even faster 4% CAGR. With Food margins expected to expand meaningfully, we believe this only enhances Walmart’s negotiating leverage going forward. SJM, Dean Foods (DF), and General Mills (GIS) are most at risk in the current environment, in our view.

Recent scanner data points to a positive inflection in private label trends (share up ~30 bps L12W) across a range of center-store categories, a dynamic we believe could intensify in an increasingly competitive retail grocery landscape. Our analysis of recent trends points to the most meaningful underperformance vs. private label at GIS, SJM, ConAgra (CAG), and Campbell Soup (CPB), while only PF has outperformed in recent weeks.

Smucker is down 1.1% to $127.95 this morning, while Pinnacle is up 0.8% to %48.47.

Best Financial Stocks To Watch For 2018

Congressional Republicans complained loud and long the past 8 years about the budget deficits recorded during the Obama administration.

The GOP was so adamant about the deficit being bad for the country, for the economy and for their grandchildren that, even when deficit spending was justified by the Great Recession, they forced the 2009 stimulus bill to be much less than many economists thought was needed. As a result, the recovery was slower and far less robust than it could…or should…have been.

Congressional Republicans also routinely opposed emergency spending for parts of the U.S. that were slammed by hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters because it would have added to the deficit. The GOP opposition meant that the funds were finally provided long after they were needed to deal with the sometimes overwhelming personal and financial misfortunes caused by those calamities.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

Shares of oil and gas drillerW&T Offshore(NYSE:WTI) fell throughout April, finishing the month at $2.04 per share, down 26.4%.

W&T is a small company primarily focused on natural gas liquids production in the Gulf of Mexico. In April, its market cap dropped about $100 million to $280 million. Huge swings like that aren’t uncommon for small companies, but what was unusual was the apparent lack of rationale for the drop.

W&T Offshore Inc. (NYSE: WTI) had a big buy hit the tape last week. CEO Tracy Krohn picked up a massive 1,180,888 shares of the independent oil and natural gas producer at $1.94 per share. The total for the trade came in right at the $2 million level. The company engages in the acquisition, exploration and development of oil and natural gas properties in the Gulf of Mexico. Best Financial Stocks To Watch For 2018: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

After a series of setbacks in its attempts to build new oil pipelines, Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) completed a transformation transaction to acquire U.S. natural gas pipeline company Columbia Pipeline Group for $13 billion, which includes the assumption of debt. The key to that deal was that it increased the combined company’s near-term project pipeline to 23 billion Canadian dollars, which supports TransCanada’s ability to increase its dividend by 8% to 10% annually through 2020. After completing that deal, TransCanada made a bid to acquire all of the outstanding units that it did not own of affiliated MLP Columbia Pipeline Partners (NYSE:CPPL) in a transaction valued at $915 million. These acquisitions solidified TransCanada’s natural gas pipeline growth ambitions, enabling it to diversify away from oil pipelines.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

That includes pipeline companies like Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), which already operates a pipeline transporting natural gas from Texas into Mexico, and master limited partnerships (MLPs) Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (NYSE: ETP) and TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP), the company that has (so far) failed to get U.S. approval for its Keystone Pipeline expansion from Canada’s oil sands across the U.S. border.

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

Energy stocks were driven by a hefty dose of M&A during the third quarter. And that will drive returns for TransCanada Corporation (TRP) during the next one.

While these deals enhanced the growth profiles of both companies, TransCanada still stands out as the better buy for long-term income investors. Here’s why.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

In a number of articles recently, following the US recent revival and potential approval of the previously blocked Keystone XL pipeline, a number of estimates have been provided suggesting a pending boom for the US steel industry is on the horizon (and US steel stocks have reacted in kind). In fact, this optimism, we believe, peaked today when a report from one of our competitors was published claiming that, the keystone XL pipeline could increase line pipe demand by 14.7% for 2 years. The problem here, we believe, rests with the facts that: (a) TransCanada (TRP) has already taken, and paid for, the steel to build the Keystone XL pipeline (the steel currently sits in storage facilities in both Regina, Canada and Arkansas, United States), (b) neither US Steel (X; SELL), AK Steel, Steel Dynamics, or Nucor have the ability to make the specialized steel required for the miles of pipe associated with this project, to include both the thickness and pressure requirements, according to this article from Reuters, and (c) assuming some of the pipe does need replacement, this would likely come from international steel makers who are capable of producing the specialized steel (again, as highlighted in this Reuters article).

The S&P 500 rose 0.4% this week after finishing little changed at2,141.16 today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished little changed this week after declining 16.64 points, or 0.1%, to 18,145.71 today. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.8% this week after advancing 0.3% to 5,257.40 today.

It was a see-saw battle between the bulls and bears this week. The presidential debate did little to soothe fears of a November surprise; the strong dollar raised fears of earnings pressure for multinational companies, and oil failed to break out. Ultimately, the question about where stocks are headed next went unanswered. Citigroup’s Tobias Levkovich and team see the “balance to be tilted in favor of higher stock prices next year.” They explain why:

Credit Suisse analysts Farhan Ahmad and John Pitzer and argues that Lam Research’s “new trough is higher than [its] old peak.” They explain:

We expect that bears will continue to argue that CY17 is a “Peak” year; however we think that investors are missing that it now costs >2x more to get incremental bit growth than three years ago. It is noteworthy that despite ~$17bn of memory WFE in 2016 both NAND and DRAM markets went from oversupply to undersupply – implying that new trough for memory investments is even higher than old peak (2010 memory peak had WFE of $12.6bn). We view Semi Growth, rising capital intensity, and growing China CapEx as secular multiyear themes, which could continue to provide growth in coming years. In addition, in case of tax reform there could be potential to return >$50 per share to shareholders by 2020…Increase TP to $160 (from $143), based on 12x of CY18 EPS plus net cash adj for taxes.

Wednesday was a mixed day for the stock market, as the Dow Jones Industrials dropped by triple digits but other major benchmarks fared much better. Crude oil prices fell nearly $2 per barrel to $50.50, and that hurt energy companies, along with a poor earnings report from technology giant IBM. Yet the broader market held up better, and the Nasdaq Composite actually gained ground. In particular, some good news from a few individual companies helped hold the markets up, and CalAmp (NASDAQ:CAMP), Lithia Motors (NYSE:LAD), and Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Best Undervalued Stocks To Invest In 2018: Accenture plc.(ACN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

ACCENTURE PLC has improved earnings per share by 6.5% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past year. We feel that this trend should continue. During the past fiscal year, ACCENTURE PLC increased its bottom line by earning $4.76 versus $4.52 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($5.20 versus $4.76).

The stock market was mostly flat today ahead of a key House vote on the passage of the Republicans’ healthcare bill, which was delayed until Friday after GOP lawmakers failed to gather the necessary support. TheDow Jones Industrial Averagelost just 5 points, or 0.02%, while other broader market indexes saw similar small declines. But several individual stocks saw much more severe drops, including Zillow Group (NASDAQ:Z) (NASDAQ:ZG), Proofpoint (NASDAQ:PFPT), and Accenture (NYSE:ACN). Read on to see what drove these unusual moves.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Investors have apparently begun to recognize positive factors similar to those we have mentioned in this report, including earnings growth. This has helped drive up the company’s shares by a sharp 28.50% over the past year, a rise that has exceeded that of the S&P 500 Index. Regarding the stock’s future course, although almost any stock can fall in a broad market decline, ACN should continue to move higher despite the fact that it has already enjoyed a very nice gain in the past year.

Recently, TheStreet Ratings objectively rated this stock according to its "risk-adjusted" total return prospect over a 12-month investment horizon. Not based on the news in any given day, the rating may differ from Jim Cramer’s view or that of this articles’s author. TheStreet Ratings has this to say about the recommendation:

We rate ACCENTURE PLC as a Buy with a ratings score of A+. This is based on the convergence of positive investment measures, which should help this stock outperform the majority of stocks that we rate. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, solid stock price performance, growth in earnings per share and increase in net income. We feel its strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had somewhat disappointing return on equity.

Best Undervalued Stocks To Invest In 2018: Applied Materials, Inc.(AMAT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By ]

As the term implies, a 15% trailing stop-loss “trails” the price of the stock. So as the price moves up, so should your stop-loss. Let’s look at Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT) as an example. On September 29, 2017, the stock closed at a new high of $52.09. That means the 15% trailing stop-loss would have been $44.28 (52.09 x .15 = 7.81; 52.09 – 7.81 = 44.28). Had the stock gone on to close below $44.28 we would have sold the next trading day.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Short interest in Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) rose to 13.95 million shares. The previous reading was 13.21 million. Shares were trading at $38.55, in a 52-week range of $19.46 to $39.81.

  • [By Sean Williams]

A final company income seekers would be wise to give a look is Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT). Applied Materials provides manufacturing equipment to semiconductor companies, meaning its business tends to be highly cyclical. If the economy is performing well, Applied Materials is probably excelling. But if semiconductor spending is down, Applied Materials is likely struggling.

Best Undervalued Stocks To Invest In 2018: Galapagos NV(GLPG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Zeiler]

Bill Patalon’s initial stock pick was Galapagos NV (Nasdaq ADR: GLPG), a Belgian biotech company.

Patalon was attracted to Galapagos’ strategy to target “orphan diseases,” afflictions that strike rarely and so often go ignored by the Big Pharma companies. He also liked that Galapagos had more than 50 drug discovery programs underway, and that it already had licensing agreements with several bigger players in the industry.

  • [By Stephen Mack]

Galapagos NV (Nasdaq: GLPG) is our big winner so far, gaining 578.8% since Money Morning Executive Editor Bill Patalon shared his recommendation with Money Morning readers in April 2012. The S&P 500 has gained 75.4% in the same time. Bill has renewed his recommendation for the Belgian biotech several times over the years, saying in 2016 that it has “an established history of piling on gains.” With an average gain of 110% a year, it’s hard to argue with that.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shanthi Rexaline]

Frontline might be evaluating a new tanker company target such as Gener8 Maritime Inc (NYSE: GNRT), away from DHT Holdings Inc (NYSE: DHT), Lewis said. This was substantiated by the fact that Frontline sold 1.7 million shares of DHT in March, followed by 2.4 million shares in April and May. Though Frontline holds about 6.8 million shares of DHT, the Credit Suisse analyst said a deal is unlikely.

Another tax-law provision gives favorable tax status to real-estate investment trusts. REITs make investments in real estate-related assets, and they’re required to pay out almost all their income to their shareholders annually.
Simon Property Group (SPG) is one of the biggest REITs, focusing on shopping malls and paying a 3 percent yield. But other specialty areas of the REIT universe pay much higher dividends, with REITs like Annaly Capital (NLY) that invest in mortgage-backed securities topping the list with double-digit percentage yields.

A blistering report from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., that takes certain life insurance and annuity providers to task over performance incentives they offer producers has mostly been met by silence from companies identified in the document.

Contacted by our partner site, LifeHealthPro to respond to Warren’s central charge — that all-expense-paid trips and other sales incentives create conflicts of interests in the delivery of retirement investment advice — all but one of the 24 companies listed in the report declined to comment. Nonetheless, some industry stakeholders believe the report overreaches in failing to acknowledge the value of these incentives; and in assuming that they cannot be structured so as to assure that agents and advisors act in their clients’ best interest.

The market is treating Chipotle as if it is an Amazon, Tesla, Apple or Google, when in fact all they do is make burritos. With the money it would cost you to buy Chipotle today @ $14 billion dollars you could buy Wendy’s (WEN), Cheesecake Factory (CAKE), Papa John’s International (PZZA), and Dunkin’ Brands (DNKN). Chipotle would need to generate at least $24 in earnings per share in order to justify the current market cap — they are not even expected to generate half of that next year. Chipotle is expected to report Q1 on April 25 and the market, in my opinion, has already more than priced in good news.

Keurigs plight (actually, JABs) is worsening, with the K-cup market slowing to almost no growth now, and Keurig continuing to lose own brands share. Starbucks (SBUX) echoed the notion of a K-cup market slowdown at its seminar on Wednesday (and is guiding for its [consumer packaged goods, or CPG,] growth below recent trends), but it expects to increase its share of total CPG coffee to 20% from 15%. Come early February it will be a year since the closing of the Keurig deal for JAB Holdings. The pressure on JAB is more significant if we take into account the high leverage of the deal (JAB contributed one fourth of the $12Bn price tag). It is a tough predicament. On the one hand we argue that to make that deal work, they need to buy more (own) brands either from the retail channel (that can be extended to CPG: Dunkin (DNKN)? Panera (PNRA)?), or outright buy CPG brands (like the entire Kraft Heinz portfolio, and or Tata Groups Eight OClock brand). But can/how do they fund these deals? Maybe Mars and Warren Buffett (Mars is involved in office coffee with Starbucks), private equity, and or 3G can help? While this note is not about Positive-rated Mondelez, we have mentioned before a scenario where Kraft Heinz buys Mondelez and partly funds the deal by selling its own CPG coffee business (~$3Bn we say) to JAB as well as divests the Mondelez 20% plus stakes in Keurig (North America) and Jacobs Douwe Egberts (Western Europe), which together at this stage are worth ~$7-8Bn. But, yes, JAB will need deep-pocket partners and generous lenders. Net, JAB needs to do something soon.
