Top Performing Stocks To Invest In 2018

When blue chips get too popular – like the five I’m going to show you today – these “safe stocks” can actually be dangerous to continue holding in your portfolio.

The problem with blue-chip stocks? Call it the “Curse of the Dow.” The Curse says a stock that joins the Dow Jones Industrial Average will essentially hit a wall, underperforming in the ensuing months compared to how it performed before ascension. It’s not perfect, but it’s close – since 1999, 15 of 16 stocks that have joined the Dow have averaged 1% gains over the next six months, but averaged 11% gains in the six months before inclusion.

Why? There are a few factors, but one of the most prevailing is that by the point a stock has joined the Dow, it’s typically nearing the end of its growth ramp and reaching the slower-growth “mature” part of the business cycle.

In a stunning reversal, the Trump administration will not seek to further delay an Obama-era investment rule designed to put an end to costly, conflict-filled retirement advice.

The so-called fiduciary rule will require anyone selling retirement investment advice to put their clients’ interests first and to plainly disclose fees. It was set to take partial effect on April 10, but the incoming Trump administration had forced a delay until June 9.

stock companies: Paragon Offshore plc (PGNPQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

Paragon Offshore’s (OTCPK:PGNPQ) former management’s audacious efforts to omit parts of the senior secured lenders by deeming them unimpaired and instead pay out the majority of the company’s cash to junior unsecured bondholders by presenting a set of entirely unrealistic business forecasts to the court. Fortunately, in case of Paragon Offshore, the bankruptcy judge recognized the framing and accordingly denied confirmation of the company’s plan of reorganization, effectively sending Paragon Offshore back to the drawing board. Consequently, management was ousted after the failure. I have covered the Paragon Offshore saga in a series of articles over the past few quarters, so interested investors might want to take a look at this highly fascinating and still evolving case study.

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

With even brand new rigs struggling to find work, the jig was soon up for owners of old equipment, like Paragon Offshore (OTCPK:PGNPQ), which is currently undergoing its second debt restructuring in less than three years of independent existence. Likewise, drillers with a fondness for aggressive use of debt were soon in trouble, most notably, former high-flier Seadrill (SDRL) and its little brother North Atlantic Drilling (NADL), which will no doubt file for restructuring within months. As a consequence of the crisis, the OSD industry now has a number of participants without a large debt burden, either new entrants like Borr Drilling, or established competitors that have had debt reduced in a restructuring, such as Ocean Rig (ORIG), to be followed within this year by others, almost certainly including each of SDRL, NADL, and Pacific Drilling (PACD).

Top Financial Stocks To Buy For 2018

If you look at how the stock market has behaved lately, its as if investors haven’t been watchingthe unsettling events unfolding on the news.

By any measure, so-called headline risk, largely in the form of anxiety-provoking news from around the globe, has been on the rise. There was the U.S. missile strike in Syria, the mega-bomb America dropped on ISIS in Afghanistan and President Trumps war of words with North Korea. The list of things to worry about grew longer Tuesdaywith twin surprises: British Prime Minister Theresa Mays call for a snap general election in June and U.S. financial giant Goldman Sachs first quarterly earnings disappointment since 2015. IBM added to the angst Wednesday with a weak earnings report.

And no list of global financial market fears would be complete without mentioning the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the first round of French elections on Sunday. That event could propel controversial candidates to the top of the polls and ratchet up the Wall Street worry meter even more.

It’s fair to say that the U.S. stock market has had a great run in recent years. In 2013, the S&P 500 index was at 1,480 and trading at 16x the earnings that the companies in the index generated (a P/E ratio of 16). So that was 2013, now let’s fast forward to the present, rather than trading at 1,480 the S&P 500 is now at 2,560 representing 25x earnings. So the S&P 500 today is 73% higher than it was a little under 5 years ago, delivering an annual return of approximately 12% a year, that’s not bad by historical standards. One reason for this move is because we haven’t seen a US recession recently. Recessions are generally negative for stocks, as companies typically sell fewer products and make less profits.

But Amazon’s ultimate end-goal would likely be turning stores into “centralized distribution centers for groceries” but “we err on the futuristic side given Bezos thinks big.”

    Company Commentary
Kroger Co (NYSE: KR) may be best positioned to counter Amazon’s threat given its own data analytics capabilities. SYSCO Corporation (NYSE: SYY) and US Foods Holding Corp (NYSE: USFD) are likely safe as Amazon won’t move into the foodservice distribution space which is very different from serving individual customers.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Buy Right Now: Cincinnati Financial Corporation(CINF)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Cincinnati Financial (CINF) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after the insurer warned of larger catastrophe losses and lower reserve releases.

    Getty Images

    Cincinnati Financialdropped 6.7% to $69.91 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.2% to 2,270.44.

Sandler O’Neil’s Paul Newsome and team explain why Cincinnati Financial got hammered today:

On January 12, 2017, before the market opened, CINF pre-announced 4Q16 catastrophe loss estimates and underwriting results. The company expects 4Q16 earnings to include pre-tax catastrophe losses of approximately $75 million to $85 million, representing an impact on the combined ratio of approximately 6.5 to 7.5 percentage points, based on estimated property casualty earned premiums…

While the press release headline led with higher catastrophe losses, the real issue was less favorable reserve development related to the companys commercial casualty line.Cincinnati Financial has been growing faster than its peers for some time. The company has been growing primarily due to geographic expansion which is better than growth through price cutting. Nevertheless, growth during a soft market is difficult and the fourth quarter profit warning will likely lead to renewed concerns thatCincinnati Financial cannot maintain its excellent profitability in its commercial insurance business.

Cincinnati Financial’s market capitalization fell to $11.5 billion today from $12.3 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $634 million on sales of $5.2 billion in 2015.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Buy Right Now: BlackBerry Limited(BBRY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ravi Bala]

When I see BlackBerry (NSDQ:BBRY)being touted as a buy, I wonder what hopeful scenario people are fantasizing about?

The long-term chart shows a collapse in the trend. I know what you are thinking. If I buy the shares at a discount, then I will make a killing when the stock goes higher. That is a feel good psychological emotion. What if that does not happen? Yes, this chart is after the fact, but as I always say you need to be prepared for two scenarios: going in your favor and going against you.

Yesterday, software and services company BlackBerry (NSDQ:BBRY)released its Q3 2017 earnings report. It was Blackberry’s first earnings after the company decided to shut down its legacy handset division. The earnings report appears to be more of the same. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company once again reported an earnings beat and a miss on revenues. The company reported a Non-GAAP EPS of $0.01 on revenue of $301 million against the analysts’ estimates of -$0.02 EPS on revenue of $332 million. BlackBerry stock rallied more than 3% just after the earnings were announced in pre-market trading. However, the stock moved lower as the market began to digest the ER, closing down by almost 3%.

  • [By Kumar Abhishek] Bears continue to remain skeptical about the prospects of BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY).

After lying dormant for the first three months of the year, shares of Ontario, Canada-based software maker BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) are back in the limelight again. For the most part of the year, BlackBerry stock had traded within a range of $7-$7.5. BlackBerry shares got a boost when the company reported better than expectedearnings. BBRY stock had gapped up after its earnings, gaining by more than 11%, from $6.95 to$7.75, on the day of earnings. The company had reported a beat on both top and bottom line. Back in 2011, when we first told you to invest in The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), the famed aerospace firm was predicting the world’s airlines would have to buy $4 trillion worth of commercial jets in the coming decades – to modernize their airplane fleets and to keep pace with the growth in global travel.

At the time, Boeing’s shares were trading at $61.92 each – and were paying a dividend of $1.68 a share.

Just short of six years have passed since then.

Today, Boeing is trading at about $200 a share. And it’s paying a dividend of $5.68 a share.

In short, folks who acted on our “Buy” recommendation are sitting on a 223% profit and have reaped a “total return” (with dividends) of about 252%.
