what does invest mean

It’s the best of times and the worst of times for investors in 2017. In other words, we’re in a Dickensian tale of two markets right now.

It’s been easy to fixate on the positive lately. The big S&P 500 index hit new all-time highs last month, and it’s been holding up just below those record levels without missing a beat. Meanwhile, a full third of the index’s constituents are up 10% or more so far this year. That’s a breakneck pace this early in the calendar year.

But, what many investors don’t realize is that there’s been a bearish flip side to those positive market stats.

For instance, while a big chunk of this market is “working” right now, an equally big chunk isn’t. As I write, more than a third of the S&P’s components are actually down since the start of the year. Of those, more than half are underperforming the big market average by 10% or worse.

Another Colombian company that appears under-valued is the Andean country’s largest commercial bank Bancolombia (NYSE: CIB  ) . For the year-to-date Bancolombia’s share price fell 17% because of a weak second quarter bottom-line. This decline was primarily caused by the bank’s net income plunging by 41% year-over-year because of mark-to-market losses caused by the value lost in the bank’s securities portfolio.

stock trading terms: Energy XXI Ltd. (EXXIQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By SEEKINGALPHA.COM]

The reality is often different. What is going on with Bellatrix Exploration is actually above average. I have written about many companies such as Sandridge Energy (NYSE:SD), Energy XXI (OTCPK:EXXIQ), and Halcon Resources (NYSE:HK) where the companies supposedly has premier assets, fantastically valuable reserves, and the investors lost everything. Right now Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) appears to be heading down the same miserable pathway as the others. At least with Bellatrix, the company appears to be entering the slow turnaround phase. But this has definitely not been a painless experience.

Hot Biotech Stocks To Invest In Right Now

You can love it, you can hate it. But you can definitely not ignore Celgene (NASDAQ:CELG). This biotech stock has continued to be in news for quite a long time and mostly for the right reasons.

Before we deep-dive in the company’ product portfolio, it would however be prudent to discuss the pricing issue that has been scaring away investors from biotechnology stocks. After being declared as the 2016 Person of the Year by TIME Magazine, Donald Trump had said, “I’m going to bring down drug prices. I don’t like what’s happened with drug prices.”

Pricing pressures may have limited impact on Celgene

Donald Trump’s statement is definitely not good news for healthcare stocks. However, I strongly believe that Celgene will be one of those facing least amount of pricing pressures in 2017. This confidence is based on Celgene’s Q3 2016 revenue numbers, where the company posted 28% rise on year-over-year basis. However, drill a little bit further in the growth number and you learn that product volumes grew by 25% in this time frame. So it is apparent that changes in pricing had a small part to pay in the company’s revenue growth. Most of the stellar performance was driven by strong underlying demand, a claim not many biotech companies can make today.

Yesterday, after markets closed, it was announced that US Federal District Court Judge Sue Robinson ruled to issue a permanent injunction against Praluent, the PCSK9 mAb for hypercholesterolemia from partners Regeneron and Sanofi, due to infringement of patents from Amgen. The court has imposed a 30-day suspension (stay) on the injunction to allow for settlement or appeal of the District Court decision. Sanofi and Regeneron have announced their intent to appeal the ruling to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC). The injunction decision is consistent with our counter-consensus published views communicated on 25 January 2016 (“Downgrade to Sell on evidence of likely infringement of Amgen’s PCSK9 patents”) and subsequently. Based on consultation with expert legal counsel, we now put >75% probability Amgen will prevail on appeal and/or Praluent is ultimately removed from the US market, and/or Amgen achieves a settlement substantially in its favor. We currently model $3.3 bn in non-risk-adjusted 2022E US revenues for Praluent, while consensus models $1.2 bn in 2022E US revenues. We reiterate our view from 25 January 2016 to preferentially own Amgen, The Medicines Company (MDCO) (Buy), and Alnylam (ALNY) (Buy) over Regeneron for exposure to PCSK9 inhibitor market dynamics as outcomes trials approach.

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY) jumped as much as 14.5% today after announcing earnings after the bell yesterday. As a development-stage biotech, it wasn’t the revenue or the earnings that caused the spike, but the progression of Allnylam’s pipeline.

Hot Biotech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Amgen Inc.(AMGN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Shares of Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) saw a handy gain to close out the week after the company won a Delaware court ruling that blocked Sanofi (NYSE: SNY) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN) from selling their cholesterol-lowering drug in the United States. Essentially the court found that the drug Praluent actually infringed upon Amgens patents for its rival treatment Repatha.

Gilead Sciences (NSDQ:GILD) has underperformed the market with its stock price down almost 25% compared to a 10.33% gain in Nasdaq Composite (INDX:COMPX) and 14.60% gain of Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDX:INDU). Gilead and Amgen (NSDQ:AMGN)have had a very tough year, so it is interesting to know if now is the time to invest in GILD stock, not from a bottom fishing point of investing, which is often too risky, but on some solid financial and fundamentals arguments.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Biotech stocks have been particularly unloved during the past year, with the iShares Nasdaq Biotech Index ETF (IBB) gaining just 7% to the S&P 500′s 20% rise. Today, however, Amgen (AMGN) is getting a lot of love from the market after releasing Street beating earnings and reporting that its anti-cholesterol drug reduced heart attacks.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

What do I mean? Regeneron’s dropped 14% during the last three months, the result of a patent suit with Amgen(AMGN) over its anti-cholesterol drug Praluent, which a judge had set it wouldn’t be able to sell in the U.S.Then last night, there was finally good news: Ajudge ordered a stay, which would allow Regeneron to sell Praluent, and resulted in a 2% pop in its shares last night after the market close. But then Regeneron reported earnings, and while profits of $3.04 cents a share metthe Street consensus, Regeneron missed on sales and offered disappointing guidance. That caused Regeneron shares to sink 2.1% in pre-open trading.

Hot Biotech Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Medivation Inc.(MDVN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Well, it looks like Medivation (MDVN) now has five suitors after reports that Amgen (AMGN) is joining Pfizer (PFE), Sanofi (SNY), AstraZeneca (AZN) and Novartis (NVS) in considering a bid. Maxim’s Jason Kolbert and Jason McCarthy offer their thoughts:

    Medivation reports tonight at 4:30pm…

We expect the focus to be on the recent proposals from Sanofi (SNY $38.75- NR); Pfizer (PFE $33.40 -NR), AstraZeneca (AZN $28.26-NR) and just today, Amgen (AMGN – $154.18 – NR)…

Medivation is returning to new highs as suitors line up to make acquisition bids. In this scenario what is the right discount rate for modeling purposes?

We believe our model for Xtandi revenues is good, therefore we review our risk rating and determine the following: 30% = $47 15% = $76 10% = $99

With Medivation’s board having now said No to anything less than $65 per share, it suggests to us that the stability and predictability of Xtandi’s revenues is greater than we thought, the risk is lower. Our intermediate risk rating is 15% or $76 fair value.

Shares of Medivation rose 0.3% to $59.22 today, while Pfizer gained 0.5% to $33.56, Sanofi fell 0.5% to $39.07, AstraZeneca dropped 0.6% to $39.07, Novartis declined 0.3% to $74.12, and Amgen ticked up 0.1% to $154.25.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Medivation (MDVN) has soared 20% to $80.41 after agreeing to be purchased for $14 billion, or $81.50 a share, by Pfizer (PFE). Pfizer has declined 0.7% to $34.75.

  • [By Scott Rubin]

Big gainers on the day included Intersil Corp (NASDAQ: ISIL), which jumped 20 percent on news of a buyout, and Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN), which added 20 percent on a deal with Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) related to its cancer drug. Cotiviti Holdings Inc (NYSE: COTV) lost around 9 percent in the wake of a mid-day sell-off and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO) fell 7 percent in the wake of a management shakeup.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Last night, Bloomberg reported that Sanofi (SNY) had made a bid for Medivation (MDVN) but had been rebuffed, while noting that other companies–perhaps Gilead Sciences (GILD), Amgen (AMGN) or AstraZeneca (AZN)?–were also on the prowl. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey’s Peter Lawson explains why Medivation might be biotech’s most wanted:

On Tuesday, the White House introduced the American Health Care Act to the American people. White House press secretary and communications director Sean Spicer compared the new healthcare bill to the Affordable Health Care Act, saying:

Obamacare was an overcomplicated bill that served the special interests and not the American people. These over 974 pages that were passed and then we were told we had to read them are filled with carve-outs by over $1 billion of healthcare-related lobbying that were spent on the year that Obamacare was crafted.

Our plan, in far fewer pages, 123 — much smaller, much bigger — so far we’re at 57 for the repeal plan and 66 pages for the replacement portion. We’ll undo this. And remember, half of it, 57 of those pages, are the repeal part. So when you really get down to it, our plan is 66 pages long, half of what we actually even have there. We’ll undo the massive disaster and replace it with a plan to return healthcare back to the patient.

Heading into its earnings following the close of trading yesterday, shares of American International Group (AIG) had gained 34% from its low on Jun. 28 to Feb. 14. Then the bottom fell out.

BMO’s Charles Sebaski explains why he upgraded American International Group (AIG) to Outperform from market Perform:

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

AIG has been trading at discount to its tangible book given its mid-single digit return profile; however, we expect AIGs valuation to keep increasing with its improving return profile. We are now forecasting AIG to generate a 9.9% operating return on tangible common equity (ROtE) in 2018, which would be a 450 bp improvement from 2016. A double-digit return profile warrants the 1x multiple that we are applying to its tangible book value per share. While we expect AIGs return profile to benefit from lower taxes, we also expect the companys life and retirement business to improve from the rising interest rates as those spread businesses are more interest rate sensitive than the P&C business. That said, we expect continued improvement on both the loss and expense sides of the P&C as contributing factors to the ROtE improve.

BMO also upgraded Arch Capital Group (ACGL), Brown & Brown (BRO), and Travelers (TRV).

Shares of American International Group have declined 0.4% to $65.60 at 3:36 p.m. today, whileArch Capital Group has gained 2% to $87.90,Brown & Brown has advanced 0.5% to $44.65, andTravelers has risen 1.3% to $120.79.

American International Group (AIG) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after its earnings fell well short of the Street consensus.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

    AIG dropped 8.9% to $60.85 today, while the S&P 500 gained 0.5% to 2,349.25.

Yes, AIG’s earnings were bad. It reported an operating loss of $2.72 a share, missing forecasts for a profit of 42 cents, according to Bloomberg. And it didn’t help that John Paulson’s Paulson & Co. cut its stake in the insurer.

You’ll notice the forecast is different than what it was in my earlier post on AIG–and an AIG spokesperson even reached out to tell me that the consensus, at least according to FactSet, should had been for a loss of 61 cents a share. Why the confusion? RBC’s Mark Dwelle and Scott Heleniak have your answer:

In reporting results AIG has recast all of its business segments, transferring various pieces to a Legacy unit, reallocating corporate expenses and net investment income as well as making some changes as to what is included within operating income, the most notable of which is that loss reserve discount effects in U.S. Commercial Insurance (and the Legacy unit) are now excluded from Operating Income. Accordingly, comparisons to prior reported results, and to some extent our 4Q16 estimates, require some reconciliation.

Macquarie’sAmit Kumar considers the bull and bear cases on AIG:

On 2/14, after market close, AIG reported a Q4 operating loss of $2.72 per share vs. our estimate of a $0.52 loss and street consensus of a $0.54 loss. Results are not directly comparable to street consensus due to lack of unanimity in terms of reserve adjustment estimates. Results included a higher than estimated $5.6 billion or $3.56/share of adverse development. The company had previously announced the possibility of a material reserve charge in the quarter. The bulls on the stock would note that this quar

Wednesday was yet another record-setting day for the stock market, as the Dow climbed triple digits and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite followed the venerable average to unprecedented heights. Economic data showing rising inflation made it more likely that the Federal Reserve will look to boost interest rates at its next Federal Open Market Committee meeting next month, and the ripples throughout the bond market sent many investors to consider stocks instead. Yet despite the substantial rally, some stocks missed out on the move higher, and American International Group (NYSE:AIG), Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK), and Movado Group (NYSE:MOV) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

The Affordable Care Act (better known as “Obamacare”) has completely rearranged the healthcare chessboard and left many wanting, frustrated and confused, especially now that its future has become less clear. And I think it’s safe to say that the real beneficiaries of the ACA have been the insurance companies.

As Washington tries to remedy the problems, we are still stuck with the No. 1 problem: How can we deliver low-cost healthcare to middle income families that are being buried with high insurance premiums and a scant provider network that changes year to year?

Raymond Jamess Praveen Narra and J. Marshall Adkins reiterated an Underperform rating on the stock following the report. They praised the companys ongoing cost controls and strong revenue efficiency, which they expect to continue. But still arent ready to recommend the stock amid a difficult macro backdrop. More detail from their note:

Transocean continued to minimize costs and maximize efficiency amid a challenging offshore environment, reporting 4Q16 adjusted EBITDA of $414 million, higher than our estimate of $363 million and consensus of $394 million. The beat was driven by lower than expected costs of $344 million (adjusting for favorable litigation), which came in ~12% lower than our estimate of $385 million and guidance of guidance of $375-385 million. Total revenue efficiency came in at 100.3%, as it was boosted by bonus incentives and possibly effective results from the new contracting model, particularly in the high-spec jackup market. The beat to our estimates was also driven by higher than anticipated revenues, which came in at $805 million, above our estimate of $788 million, but below the consensus estimate of $812 million. We note, our adjusted revenue excludes $169 million in early termination fees during the quarter.

Top Small Cap Stocks To Watch Right Now: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

But for short sellers in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR), there's another outcome: They've been badly burned as shares have surged, but they insist they've been right all along, and it's only a matter of time before the stock crashes and burns.

  • [By Canadian Value]

So Im going to stick my next out and share my views on four battleground stocks that are among my favorite shorts: World Acceptance (WRLD), Green Mountain (GMCR), Herbalife (HLF), and InterOil (IOC). And next week at the Value Investing Congress I will present another short, my largest.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As badly as short sellers want to hate on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), betting against the multiyear rally in this $12.7 billion beverage stock has been about as wise as eating from a box with a skull and crossbones on it. And as a bull market continues to lift all ships, Green Mountain’s ship is going to keep floating above the others.

Green Mountain owns Keurig, the brand of beverage brewers that use self-contained K-Cups to make coffee, teas, and other drinks. While Keurig’s “fad” status has certainly helped tip the deck against GMCR, the fact remains that the firm has done most of the hard work in getting Keurig machines accepted by consumers. With brewers essentially ubiquitous at this point, the firm is able to make money on its cash cow: the K-Cups.

Keurig’s individual-serving cups have big margins and a big installed base. With huge convenience and the relatively large sunk cost that consumers have put into their Keurig machines, it’s a sticky business with big switching costs. Consumers who buy a Keurig are much less likely to spend the money on a competing brand of proprietary coffee pods.

I’ve said before that GMCR is far from cheap right now. But its momentum trajectory is showing few signs of fizzling out, especially as direct competitors such as Starbucks (SBUX) continue to sell K-Cups of their own. Don’t bet against GMCR in September – buy this Rocket Stock instead.

Potash Cartel Breakup Has Weighed on This Agriculture ETF

The ETF’s unit price declined in the first half of 2013, partly because of the breakup of the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC), through which Russia’s Uralkali, the world’s No. 1 potash producer, and Belaruskali of Belarus distribute their potash. The market is dominated by BPC and Canpotex, owned by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT), Mosaic and Agrium Inc. (NYSE: AGU).

Together, the two cartels control 70% of global potash exports, so the breakup of BPC will result in a more fractured market, which seems likely to push potash prices lower. Shares of major potash producers fell sharply on the news, as did Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF due to its potash stock holdings, which include Agrium, Potash Corp. and Mosaic.

Charlie Munger (Trades, Portfolio) is an investor and the business partner of the world’s most famous investor, Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio), but he is also among the rarified group that cleaned up during the financial crisis. The fountain of wit, wisdom and ice-cold discipline got into the market at its most despairing and quietly made a small fortune, primarily on banks, which he still owns nearly a decade later. With the rally in financials in recent months, Munger has three that continue to thrive.

Munger’s move into stocks began in 2009 after keeping most of the investment funds of his company, Daily Journal (NASDAQ:DJCO), in cash and U.S. Treasurys. Initially, he sold most of the Treasurys earning nominal interest to buy $15.5 million in stocks of two Fortune 200 companies, saying he “took advantage of near-panic selling in the stock market.” By September 2010, the unnamed stocks had provided a $9.30 million gain.

Heading into its earnings following the close of trading yesterday, shares of American International Group (AIG) had gained 34% from its low on Jun. 28 to Feb. 14. Then the bottom fell out.

American International Group (AIG) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after its earnings fell well short of the Street consensus.
