Top 10 Stocks For 2018: Eagle Materials Inc(EXP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

In trading on Thursday, basic materials shares fell by 1.10 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Mechel PAO (ADR) (NYSE: MTL), down 8 percent, and Eagle Materials, Inc. (NYSE: EXP), down 6 percent.

  • [By David Sterman]

Of course, in many cyclical industries, it’s impossible to maintain very strong growth rates when the economy slumps. And that was a lesson learned by Eagle Materials (NYSE: EXP(link is external)), a maker of drywall, cement and other materials used in homebuilding. Eagle experienced solid growth a decade ago, but when the housing market tanked, so did Eagle’s revenue base. Sales fell by half from fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2011 (to around $460 million).

Yet even before the pace of home construction returns to normal levels, Eagle is again experiencing solid growth: Sales are now growing at a 30% pace and are expected to surpass $1.1 billion in the current fiscal year, which began this month. That’s 25% higher than the peak in fiscal 2007, and it’s setting the stage for solid profit growth: Earnings per share (EPS) are growing at a 50% pace these days, a pace which could be sustained for an extended period if the housing market finally starts to grow at a solid clip.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

Shares of construction materials leader Eagle Materials (NYSE:EXP) set new all-time highs earlier this year, although the stock’s recent surge was catalyzed by the announcement of fiscal second-quarter 2017 results in late October. At the time, the company set record revenues and more than doubled earnings per share from the prior-year period. That was followed by a new high watermark for quarterly sales in the fiscal third quarter of 2017, which ended in December, marking the third consecutive quarter in which record revenue was established.

Top 10 Stocks For 2018: Unilever NV(UN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

In trading on Tuesday, industrial shares fell by 0.04 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Unilever N.V. (ADR) (NYSE: UN), down 8 percent, and Magal Security Systems Ltd. (USA) (NASDAQ: MAGS), down 6 percent.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Earlier this year, Unilever (UN) recently declined Kraft Heinz (KHC) merger bid. That means that if the company still wants to do a deal, Mondelez International (MDLZ) and PepsiCo (PEP) are the next logical partners, writes Susquehannas Pablo Zuanic.

    Getty Images

Zuanic upgraded Pepsi from Neutral to Positive today and raised his price target from $118 to $132. He writes that a Pepsi deal would have more strategic merits, hence his upgrade (as he emphasizes that not much has changed in terms of fundamentals for the firm).

    More detail from his note:

With investors apparently seeing MDLZ as the next likely KHC target, and Coca-Cola (KO) the next Anheuser-Busch (BUD) target, PEP shares have lost visibility and now trade at a 25% discount to KO on apples-to-apples comps. We see value here, on franchise strength, efforts to align the F&B portfolio with consumer health trends, and the growing optionality value of a joint KHC/BUD bid for PEP. We argue that, together, the Kendall Jenner commercial, the Aspartame to-be-or-not-to-be zigzagging, the new, new, new alt low-cal cola (Pepsi Zero sugar), the ongoing underperformance in U.S. CSDs (25% only of the company), the lack of scale in non-CSD NARTDs vs. KO (other than Gatorade), and now talk of PEP buying Brazilian dairy company Vigor S.A. (a JBS subsidiary that would better fit KHC or ULVR), all paint a picture of a company still struggling to set a new direction (with all due respect). In this regard, we think PEP may be more vulnerable than MDLZ to a KHC bid (jointly done with BUD). We also see greater strategic fit for KHC with PEP Food/Snacks (than with MDLZ), and argue that PEP Beverages fits BUD better than KO, as the PEP bottling operations in key regions (including NA) remain in the hands of PEP (KO, on the other hand will be fully refranchised by end of 2017). So we are upgrading PEP to Positive with a $132 price target by December 17. Yes, the Unilever rebuff

Top 10 Stocks For 2018: Brady Corporation(BRC)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Before the opening bell on Thursday, identification solutions provider Brady Corp (BRC) posted a loss in the fourth quarter, despite a rise in revenues, as it was negatively impacted by a number of charges. However, excluding these charges, the company was able to top Wall Street analysts’ earnings and sales estimates. Nonetheless, BRC shares are plummeting in Thursday’s trading.

The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company posted a loss from continuing operations of $176.2 million, or $3.41 per share, in the fourth quarter, versus last year’s fourth quarter earnings from continuing operations of $20.9 million, or 40 cents per share. Furthermore, Brady posted a net loss of $177.2 million, or $3.43 per share, compared to net earnings of $11.6 million, or 22 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

The fourth quarter loss includes non-cash impairment charges of $204.4 million, $15.6 million in restructuring charges, and $4 million in acquisition-related charges. Excluding these charges, Brady Corp said earnings would have been 53 cents per share in the quarter. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, the company was expected to earn an adjusted 51 cents per share in the fourth quarter.

The company’s fourth quarter sales came in at $309.1 million, up 15% from $269.1 million in sales posted last year. On average, analysts were expecting the company to see $307.13 million in revenues for the quarter.

Looking ahead, Brady Corp. sees fiscal 2014 earnings coming in between $1.80 and $2.00 per share, below the analysts’ view of $2.30 per share.

The Milwaukee, WI-based company increased its quarterly dividend to 19.5 cents from 19 cents, an increase of 2.6%. The annual dividend now stands at 78 cents. The quarterly dividend will be paid on October 31st, 2013 to all shareholders of record on October 10, 2013.

BRC shares were down 40 cents, or 1.23%, by market close on Wednesday. YTD, the company’s stock is down over 4%.

  • [By Shauna O’Brien]

Robert Baird announced on Friday that it has cut its rating on Brady Corp (BRC).

The firm has downgraded BRC from “Outperform” to “Neutral,” and has given the company a $33 price target. This price target suggests a 8% upside from the stock’s current price of $30.52.

Analysts see the company’s WPS segment growing faster than expected.

Brady shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Friday. The stock is down 9% YTD.

Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC) is expected to report its quarterly earnings at $0.68 per share on revenue of $7.52 billion.

CST Brands Inc (NYSE: CST) is projected to report its quarterly earnings at $0.22 per share on revenue of $2.30 billion.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Analysts are expecting Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC) to have earned $0.68 per share on revenue of $7.52 billion in the latest quarter. Exelon shares rose 0.34 percent to close at $35.38 on Thursday.

  • [By Horizon Investments]

For the past year, Exelon Corp. (EXC) has had a roller coaster ride, with the stock having plummeted 15% since September 2012 – the company had announced a dividend cut of 41%, which led to a drop in the share price. Separately, the recent weak PJM auction prices did not bode well for the company. However, I believe the worst is priced in the stock price, and the company’s management is committed to improving its financial flexibility and cost structure in order to strengthen its financial performance. Also, the company is planning to incur capital expenditure (CAPEX) in the upcoming years, which will result in rate base growth for Exelon.

That brings us to General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE). The 125-year-old American mainstay signed a deal with Exelon Corp. (NYSE: EXC) last fall for the energy utility to use its own predictive analytics software, fittingly dubbed “Predix.”

Top 10 Stocks For 2018: Pebblebrook Hotel Trust(PEB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Marshall Hargrave]

The other key benefit for Strategic is that it enjoys industry-leading earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) per available room. For 2012, Strategic generated $81 per room of EBITDA. Compare this to top comps LaSalle Hotel (NYSE: LHO) at $74 per room and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) at $71. The reason for this is that Strategic is much less reliant than its peers on rooms, with much greater exposure to food and beverages. Strategic earns 53% of its revenue from rooms, while its peers get around 66% of revenues from rooms.
